If your Marshall Emberton III will not pair, start with the model-specific sequence: switch on the speaker, hold its Bluetooth button until the LED pulses blue slowly, enable Bluetooth on your phone, tablet or computer, then choose EMBERTON III in that device’s Bluetooth list. If the speaker was paired previously, remove its saved entry and pair again. If it connects but appears silent, another connected device may own playback. For dropouts, shorten the distance and remove obstacles or interference. Use a factory reset only after those checks because it deletes user settings.
Marshall’s own support pages separate four different symptoms: failure to discover or pair, connection to the wrong or silent source, intermittent Bluetooth dropouts, and persistent or erratic behavior. The correct first action depends on which one you see.

Identify what is actually failing
“Pairing” is the initial exchange that adds the Emberton III to a source device’s Bluetooth list. “Connection” is the later link used for audio. A speaker can be paired but disconnected, connected to a different device, or connected while another device controls playback. Use this table before changing settings.

Prepare both devices
Turn on the speaker and the source
Press the Emberton III’s power control so the speaker is running. On the phone, tablet or computer, open its Bluetooth controls and confirm Bluetooth is enabled. Marshall’s user manual lists disabled source Bluetooth and a speaker that is not in pairing mode among the basic causes of a failed pairing attempt.
Keep the first attempt simple
For the initial test, keep the source near the speaker and temporarily stop audio on other phones, tablets or computers that have used it. This makes it easier to see the correct device entry and prevents an already connected source from taking playback. Do not troubleshoot several variables at once: begin with one source, one speaker and a short audio test.
Know what the LED is telling you
Powering on and entering pairing mode are separate actions. The speaker can be on without advertising for a new connection. Hold the Bluetooth button until the indicator reaches the slow blue pulse; only then search from the source. If the LED does not show that cue, repeat the hold with the speaker powered on before changing settings on the phone or computer.
Pair the Emberton III from scratch
- Put the speaker in pairing mode. With the Emberton III on, press and hold its Bluetooth button until the LED pulses blue slowly. Marshall describes this exact cue as: “Turn your speaker on and push the Bluetooth button until the LED turns to a slow blue pulse.” See the pairing troubleshooting page.
- Open Bluetooth on the source. Use the phone, tablet or computer’s normal Bluetooth settings screen and wait for nearby devices to populate.
- Select the correct entry. Tap or click EMBERTON III. Do not select a similarly named device from another room or a previous accessory.
- Wait for the connection result. Keep the settings screen open until the source reports that the Emberton III is connected. Then play a short audio clip at a moderate volume.
If the speaker does not appear, repeat the pairing-mode step and watch for the slow blue pulse. Simply powering the unit on does not guarantee that it is advertising for a new pairing. Keep the source close during discovery, and do not leave multiple Bluetooth settings screens competing for the same speaker.
Remove a stale Bluetooth record and pair again
A source can retain an old entry even when the underlying connection is no longer usable. On the phone, tablet or computer that is failing, open its saved Bluetooth devices, select the Emberton III and choose the platform’s Forget, Remove or Unpair command. Turn Bluetooth off and on again if the source does not refresh its list.
Return the speaker to pairing mode and select EMBERTON III as a new device. If your source shows both EMBERTON III and EMBERTON III [LE], remove both records when performing a complete cleanup. Marshall specifies removal of both names, when present, in its factory-reset instructions.

Do not delete the saved entry on every device automatically. Start with the source that cannot connect; broader cleanup is useful only if several devices have conflicting records. After removing an entry, pair again rather than trying to force a connection from an obsolete listing.
Check multipoint before assuming pairing failed
The Emberton III can maintain Bluetooth connections with two audio devices at the same time and remembers up to eight previously paired devices. When it is in range, it attempts to reconnect to the last connected device. That behavior can make a new source look broken even though the speaker is functioning normally.
When the speaker is connected but silent
- Look at the Bluetooth status on each nearby phone, tablet or computer.
- Identify which two, if any, show the Emberton III as connected.
- Pause audio on the device that is currently playing, or stop its media session entirely.
- Start playback on the source you intend to use and confirm that its output is set to the Emberton III rather than its built-in speaker or another accessory.
Marshall states that while one connected device is playing, the other cannot start playback until the first is paused. This is a playback-ownership issue, not necessarily a failed pairing. If you want to prevent an old source from reclaiming the speaker, move it out of Bluetooth range or disconnect it before testing the new source.
Remembered does not mean simultaneously active: the speaker stores up to eight paired devices but supports audio connections from only two at once. If an old laptop or tablet is nearby, check it before deleting records or resetting the speaker.
Fix Bluetooth audio that keeps dropping out
Dropouts after a successful connection require a different approach from a speaker that never appears in the Bluetooth list. Bluetooth is a short-range radio link, so first improve the path between the Emberton III and the active source.

Remove physical obstacles
Move the speaker or source so that walls, doors and other substantial obstacles are no longer between them. Test in the same room with a clear path before relocating either device farther away. If the clear-path test is stable, restore distance gradually to identify the condition that triggers the dropout.
Move away from interference
Marshall’s dropout guidance names microwave ovens, wireless network adapters and fluorescent lights as examples of electronics that can interfere with the same frequency range. Temporarily move the speaker away from those items and test with unnecessary wireless equipment powered down or relocated.
Change one variable at a time
Keep the same source and audio file while changing distance, then obstacles, then nearby electronics. This isolates the condition that improves stability. If dropouts persist at close range with a clear path and no obvious interference, continue with the software and reset checks below. Do not treat a dropout as proof that pairing failed; the speaker may remain paired while the radio link is interrupted.
Use the Marshall Bluetooth app for erratic behavior
For freezes, inconsistent reconnection or other behavior that does not fit a simple pairing or dropout problem, connect the Emberton III to the Marshall Bluetooth app. Follow the app’s instructions to check whether a firmware update is available and install it if offered.
Marshall’s support guidance does not establish one universal current firmware number; availability can vary by device and release. Use the version and instructions shown by the app rather than relying on an old number from a forum or video. The erratic-behavior guide recommends trying a factory reset if the app and ordinary reconnection steps do not resolve the problem.
Keep the app check in the escalation order: first confirm pairing mode and the source Bluetooth switch, then remove stale records, resolve multipoint playback and test the radio path. Firmware checking is useful for persistent or inconsistent behavior, but it does not replace the basic discovery sequence.

Factory-reset the Emberton III
A reset is the escalation step because it removes your stored user settings and requires setup again. It does not roll back installed firmware. Marshall summarizes this limitation as: “A factory reset will restore Emberton III to its original settings, excluding any firmware updates.”
Recommended Free Tools
Before starting
- On each source you plan to use, remove EMBERTON III from the Bluetooth list.
- Also remove EMBERTON III [LE] if that entry appears.
- Keep the speaker powered on and place it near the source for the later re-pairing step.
Run the reset
- Turn on the Emberton III.
- Press and hold the speaker’s Bluetooth button for seven seconds.
- Keep holding until the indicator flashes quickly and the speaker restarts.
- Release the button after the restart begins and wait for the speaker to finish booting.
The seven-second hold is the documented reset trigger in Marshall’s factory-reset guide. A short press or an ordinary pairing-mode hold is not the same operation. If you release early, you may only change pairing state rather than restore the original settings.
What the reset changes
The reset restores original user settings and clears the speaker’s stored Bluetooth relationships. Firmware updates remain installed, but every source must be set up again. If you skip removal of the old source entries, the operating system may immediately reuse stale records and make the reset appear ineffective. Because the reset is disruptive, document which sources you use and add them back one at a time.
Pair again after the reset
- Wait until the speaker has restarted.
- Hold the Bluetooth button until the LED pulses blue slowly.
- Enable Bluetooth on one source only for the first test.
- Select EMBERTON III from the discovered-device list.
- Play audio, then reconnect your other source if you need the two-device capability.
Adding sources one at a time makes it clear whether the reset solved the original issue or whether a particular phone, tablet or computer is contributing to it. Once the first source works, add the second and confirm that pausing the active device allows the other to play.

Check the source, not only the speaker
Try the Emberton III with a different Bluetooth-capable phone, tablet or computer. If it pairs elsewhere, the original source’s saved Bluetooth data, operating-system settings or radio environment is the next place to troubleshoot. If no source can discover the speaker while it is visibly in pairing mode, repeat the reset procedure and verify the LED behavior.
Separate pairing from playback
A successful “connected” status proves only that a Bluetooth link exists. Confirm that the source’s audio output is routed to the Emberton III, that its volume is not muted, and that another connected device is not currently playing. These checks address silent output without erasing settings again.

Escalate for service when the documented steps do not restore operation
If the speaker will not power on, never reaches the documented slow blue pairing pulse, or fails with multiple independent sources after a reset and firmware check, use Marshall’s support hub for warranty and repair options. The manual also contains product and spare-part information. Do not assume that a routine pairing failure requires replacement; Marshall’s troubleshooting path puts source checks, pairing mode, interference checks, firmware and reset ahead of service.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Searching before pairing mode: the speaker must show the slow blue pulse, not merely be powered on.
- Choosing the wrong listing: select EMBERTON III; remove both standard and [LE] entries when doing a complete cleanup.
- Resetting too soon: a reset deletes user settings and requires every source to be configured again.
- Ignoring the second connected device: multipoint can leave a newly connected source silent while another source is playing.
- Calling every interruption a pairing failure: distance, walls, doors and nearby electronics are dropout checks, not discovery steps.
- Using an old firmware number: let the Marshall Bluetooth app identify available updates for your speaker.
A compact troubleshooting checklist
- Speaker powered on.
- Source Bluetooth enabled.
- Bluetooth button held until the LED pulses blue slowly.
- EMBERTON III selected from the source’s device list.
- Old EMBERTON III and, if present, EMBERTON III [LE] records removed before re-pairing.
- Other connected device paused when the speaker appears connected but silent.
- Speaker and source moved closer, with walls and doors removed from the path.
- Microwave ovens, wireless network adapters and fluorescent lights moved away during dropout testing.
- Marshall Bluetooth app checked for firmware instructions.
- Seven-second Bluetooth-button reset used only after the less disruptive checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Emberton III not appear in Bluetooth settings?
Turn on the speaker, hold its Bluetooth button until the LED pulses blue slowly, confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the phone, tablet or computer, and search again. Powering on alone does not place it in pairing mode.
Why does Emberton III say connected but produce no sound?
The speaker can connect to two audio devices. Check which devices show it as connected, pause playback on the device currently using it, and select Emberton III as the active audio output on the source you want to use.

Remove both entries when performing a complete cleanup, especially before a factory reset. If only one source is affected, start by removing the entries on that source rather than deleting every saved device.
How do I stop Emberton III Bluetooth dropouts?
Move the speaker and source closer, remove walls and doors from the path, and move away from microwave ovens, wireless network adapters and fluorescent lights. Pairing failure and dropouts require different first steps.
How long do I hold the Bluetooth button for a factory reset?
With the speaker on, hold the Bluetooth button for seven seconds until the indicator flashes quickly and the speaker restarts. Remove saved Emberton III entries first. The reset clears user settings but does not remove firmware updates.
What if the speaker still will not pair after resetting?
Check the Marshall Bluetooth app for firmware instructions, test with another Bluetooth-capable source, and verify that the speaker reaches the slow blue pairing pulse. If it fails with multiple sources, use Marshall’s warranty and repair resources.

The Bottom Line
Start with the slow blue pairing pulse, the correct EMBERTON III listing and a source with Bluetooth enabled. Forget stale entries when necessary, check multipoint playback before assuming the speaker is silent, and treat dropouts as a distance, obstacle or interference problem. Use the Marshall Bluetooth app for firmware guidance, then reserve the seven-second factory reset for persistent failures because it deletes user settings and requires setup again.
