One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchMost Bluetooth pairing failures are solved without replacing the headphones: charge them, turn on Bluetooth, put the headphones into pairing mode (not merely powered on), remove stale or competing connections, and pair again while the devices are close together. If that fails, test the headphones with another phone or computer. The result tells you whether to troubleshoot the original host or the headphones themselves.
Use the sequence below in order. It starts with reversible checks and reserves a factory reset for the exact headphone model’s documented procedure.

What “pairing” requires
Pairing is the initial exchange that saves a headphone’s Bluetooth identity on a phone, tablet or computer. A headset can be switched on and still be invisible because it is already connected elsewhere or is not advertising in discovery mode. The host device must have Bluetooth enabled, the headphones must have enough charge, and both radios must be within practical range.
- Power: Charge the headphones or place them in their charging case. A low battery can prevent discovery even when an indicator light still works.
- Discovery: Activate the model’s pairing mode. This is normally a long press, a Bluetooth button, or a case button; the exact control is model-specific.
- Availability: The host must be scanning from its Bluetooth settings screen.
- Exclusivity: A headphone that automatically reconnects to another phone or computer may reject a new pairing attempt.
- Radio conditions: Keep the devices close and retry away from obvious sources of wireless interference.
Before you start: a two-minute checklist
Have the exact headphone model name available. The model number on the headband, earbud case, box or Bluetooth name matters because pairing and reset controls differ. Also note which host you are using, whether the headphones worked previously, and whether another phone or computer is nearby. These details prevent you from applying instructions for a similar-looking product.

- Open the host’s Bluetooth settings rather than relying only on a quick-settings shortcut.
- Have the headphone manual or the manufacturer’s current support page ready for pairing-mode and reset instructions.
No special app, cable or replacement product is required for the normal sequence. Buy an adapter only if a computer genuinely lacks compatible Bluetooth or its adapter is proven defective; a new headset does not correct an ordinary stale-pairing problem.
Do this first: the complete pairing sequence
1. Charge and power-cycle the headphones
Connect the headphones to power until they have a useful charge, then turn them off. Wait several seconds and turn them on again. If they use a charging case, verify that both earbuds are seated correctly and that the case itself has charge. Do not assume that a lit status LED means the battery can complete pairing.
Check that the charging contacts are clean and that each earbud is actually recognized by its case. If only one earbud powers up, the set may not enter its normal discovery state. Resolve that model-specific charging indication first rather than repeatedly scanning from the phone.

2. Enable Bluetooth on the host
Open the phone, tablet or computer’s Bluetooth controls and make sure Bluetooth is on. Leave that screen open while putting the headphones into discovery mode so the available-device list can refresh immediately. If Bluetooth is missing entirely, grayed out, or will not stay enabled, that is a host-side problem; test another accessory and use the host manufacturer’s support process.
3. Enter the headphones’ pairing mode
Follow the manual or official support page for the exact model. Pairing mode is different from normal power-on mode. A dedicated Bluetooth button, a long press of the power button, or a button on a charging case may be required. Look for a rapidly flashing indicator or an audible pairing message.
Do not copy a button combination from a different model. For example, Bose QuietComfort instructions use the Bluetooth control and an indicator, while Sony’s WF-1000XM4 procedure changes depending on whether it is the first pairing or a subsequent device. Sony says the WF-1000XM4 pairing attempt is canceled if it is not completed within five minutes. Those directions apply to that model, not to Bluetooth headphones generally.
If the headphones leave pairing mode before you select them, repeat the exact procedure and start the host’s scan immediately. A slow, steady light often indicates ordinary power or an existing connection rather than active discovery; trust the model’s documented light or voice prompt.
4. Move the devices close together
Place the headphones within a short distance of the host, ideally beside it. Sony’s general troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends moving the headphone and source closer when connection fails. Once pairing succeeds, you can test normal operating distance.
Keep both devices away from large obstructions and crowded wireless equipment for the initial exchange. If the headphones pair only when they are extremely close, complete setup there, then move them gradually to determine whether the problem is range or interference rather than saved-device data.
5. Select the headphones from the host’s list
Start the scan and tap or click the headphone name when it appears. If a PIN is requested, use the code in the model’s manual; many modern headphones complete this step automatically. If the name never appears, return to step 3 and confirm that the indicator shows discovery mode rather than ordinary operation.

Several names can look similar when multiple units are nearby. Identify the correct model and, for earbuds, select the single product entry rather than an unrelated left- or right-earbud entry unless the manufacturer specifically instructs otherwise. Wait for a connected or paired status before closing the settings page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. Remove a saved but unusable entry
A previously saved record can become stale after a firmware update, reset, or interrupted connection. Delete the headphone from the host’s Bluetooth list, then put the headphones back into pairing mode and add them as a new device. “Forget,” “Remove device” and “Unpair” are common labels for this action.
Remove only the affected headphone first. If you erase every Bluetooth accessory from the host, you create extra work without improving diagnosis. After forgetting the entry, turn Bluetooth off and on or restart the host, then perform a fresh scan; do not select the old record while the headphones are still in normal operating mode.
7. Disconnect other phones and computers
Check nearby devices that have previously used the headphones. They may have connected automatically as soon as the headphones were turned on. Disconnect or unpair the headphones on that device, then retry from the intended host. This is especially important when multipoint or automatic reconnection is enabled.
If you cannot find the other device, temporarily switch its Bluetooth off or move it out of range. A successful connection to the wrong host can make the headphones appear unavailable even though the headphones themselves are working.

8. Restart the host device
Restart the phone, tablet or computer after removing the old entry. A restart reloads Bluetooth services and clears a scan that has become stuck. Turn the headphones off and on once more before beginning a fresh scan.
Do not repeatedly toggle Bluetooth every few seconds while the headphones are still connecting elsewhere. Complete one clean cycle: disconnect competing hosts, restart, enter pairing mode, scan, and select the device.
9. Reduce interference
Retry away from crowded wireless equipment and large obstructions. Keep the phone and headphones together during the initial exchange. If they pair only when very close, continue testing in that position before investigating range or hardware problems.
Remove the phone from a crowded bag or desk drawer and avoid testing behind a computer tower or other enclosure. These are simple diagnostic changes, not a guarantee that the headphones have a permanent range defect.

10. Try a second host
Pair the headphones with another phone or computer. A successful second pairing points toward a configuration, driver, update, or Bluetooth-service issue on the original host. Failure with multiple hosts—especially if the headphones cannot enter discovery mode—points toward the headphone, its case, or its stored pairing data.

Use a host whose Bluetooth is known to work with another accessory. Record the result: “visible and pairs,” “visible but will not connect,” or “never visible.” That distinction is more useful to support than simply reporting that Bluetooth is broken.
Platform-specific instructions
iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and leave the page open.
- Put the charged headphones into their model’s discovery mode.
- Tap the headphone name under available devices.
- If the name is already listed but will not connect, tap the information button, choose Forget This Device, confirm, and repeat the pairing process.
- Unpair the headphones from other phones or computers before trying again.
Apple’s guidance also recommends keeping the accessory nearby and charged or connected to power. If the headphones pair with other devices but not the iPhone or iPad, remove their saved entries from those other devices first. If Bluetooth is unavailable or no accessories connect even after a known-good headphone works elsewhere, contact Apple support.
An iPhone or iPad may show an accessory under saved devices while it is not currently discoverable. Tapping that old name repeatedly will not force pairing; forget it, put the headphones into the documented mode, and select the newly advertised entry.

- Open the system’s Bluetooth settings. On many devices this is Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, but manufacturers use different labels.
- Choose Pair new device (or the equivalent scan command).
- Put the headphones into discovery mode and select them when they appear.
- For an old entry, open its saved-device controls and choose Forget, then scan again.
Google’s Android guidance notes that menu wording and availability vary by manufacturer, software version and hardware; some referenced controls require Android 15 or later. If the headphones are listed but immediately disconnect, remove the saved entry and check whether another device has taken the active connection.
Android’s quick settings tile may expose Bluetooth without showing the complete scan or saved-device controls. Use the full Settings screen when you need to forget an entry, inspect connection status, or choose “Pair new device.” If several unrelated accessories fail, install available system updates and follow the phone maker’s support steps rather than assuming the headphones are defective.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices (Windows 10).
- Turn Bluetooth on and choose Add device, then select Bluetooth.
- Put the headphones in pairing mode and select their name.
- If they appear but will not connect, open the device’s menu, choose Remove device, restart Windows, and add them again.
- In Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter if the problem continues.
Microsoft says that when Bluetooth appears in Device Manager but pairing or connection fails, Windows may have a configuration, driver or device-level communication problem. Install pending Windows updates, then check the manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver and confirm that Bluetooth-related services have not been disabled. Test another Bluetooth accessory to determine whether the fault affects Windows generally or only these headphones.
Windows can retain duplicate entries under Bluetooth and audio devices. Remove the obsolete headphone entries, restart, and add the headphones once. If the adapter has a warning icon in Device Manager, capture that status before changing drivers. Do not uninstall the adapter without a recovery path such as the computer maker’s driver package or a wired input device.
How to interpret what you see
| What happens | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Headphones never appear in the scan | They are not in discovery mode, are connected elsewhere, have insufficient charge, or are out of range. | Charge, disconnect other devices, re-enter model-specific pairing mode, and scan nearby. |
| They appear, but selection fails | Stale host record, competing connection, or a temporary Bluetooth-service fault. | Forget/remove the entry, restart both devices, and pair again. |
| Pairing succeeds, then immediately drops | Another host reclaimed the connection, battery is low, or the host has a driver/service issue. | Disable Bluetooth on other nearby hosts, charge the headphones, and test a second host. |
| They pair with another phone but not the original host | Original host configuration, software, driver, or device-level problem. | Update the host, rerun its Bluetooth troubleshooter, and remove old pairings. |
| They fail with several hosts | Headphone pairing memory, firmware, case, battery, or radio hardware. | Use the exact model’s reset instructions, then contact the headphone manufacturer if failure remains. |
| Only one earbud appears or plays | Case charging, earbud seating, or model-specific synchronization issue. | Charge both pieces, follow the model’s re-synchronization instructions, then pair the set again. |
Clear stored pairings and reset safely
Many headphones remember several hosts. Clearing that list can resolve a corrupted or full pairing history, but the command and button sequence differ by model. Some products provide a “clear Bluetooth list” action; others require initialization.
Sony describes initialization as a return to factory settings that deletes all Bluetooth pairing information. Bose likewise publishes model-specific procedures for clearing stored Bluetooth devices. A reset may also remove custom settings, so record any equalizer or control preferences first. Never hold random buttons based on instructions for another product. Find the current support page for the exact model and follow its timing, LED pattern and post-reset pairing steps.
After initialization, every previously paired host must be set up again. Keep other hosts’ Bluetooth disabled during that first post-reset pairing so an old device does not immediately reclaim the connection. If the official procedure does not produce the expected indicator, stop rather than repeating an unverified combination.

When Windows or Android still refuses to connect
Windows driver and service checks
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Device Manager and verify that the Bluetooth adapter is present without a warning icon.
- Use the adapter manufacturer’s current Windows 10/11 driver when Windows reports a driver problem.
- Run the Windows 11 Bluetooth troubleshooter through Get Help.
- Remove duplicate headphone entries under Bluetooth and audio devices, then add the headphones again.
Microsoft’s description is useful diagnostically: Bluetooth can appear in Device Manager while a configuration, driver or device-level issue still prevents communication. If another Bluetooth accessory also fails, concentrate on Windows, the adapter, its driver, or related services. If only these headphones fail and they work on another host, keep the Windows changes focused on the stale device record and driver rather than replacing the headset.

Restart the device, forget the headphone entry, and use the current system Bluetooth screen to pair again. Because Android menus vary, follow the labels on the device rather than a screenshot from a different version. If several accessories fail while Bluetooth is enabled, install available system updates and use the phone maker’s support process.
Some Android instructions cited by Google apply only to Android 15 and later. Do not treat a missing menu item on an older phone as proof that the headphones are incompatible; use that phone’s equivalent saved-device and scan controls.
Signs of a headphone-side fault
Escalate to the headphone manufacturer when the headset cannot show a pairing indicator after charging, cannot be discovered by multiple known-good hosts, or fails immediately after a model-specific initialization. A damaged charging case, failed battery, stuck control, or radio fault can look like a software pairing problem. Note the model, firmware if shown, indicator behavior, and which hosts you tested; those details help support avoid repeating basic steps.
A replacement adapter is relevant only when the original computer lacks compatible Bluetooth or its adapter is demonstrably defective. New headphones, replacement batteries, or repair tools do not solve a generic pairing failure without evidence of a hardware or compatibility fault. The normal troubleshooting path has no required purchase cost: use the equipment you already own, the official instructions, and a second host if one is available.
Questions readers commonly ask
Why are my headphones on but not showing up?
Power-on mode is not necessarily discovery mode. Enter the exact model’s pairing mode, disconnect devices that may have auto-connected, charge the headphones, and scan with the host nearby.
Should I forget the headphones before trying again?
Yes, when the headphones are listed as saved but selection fails or they connect and immediately drop. Forget or remove that entry, restart the host, and pair from discovery mode. Do not remove every Bluetooth accessory unless support directs you to.
Can another phone prevent pairing?
Yes. A nearby phone or computer can reconnect automatically and make the headphones unavailable to the intended host. Turn Bluetooth off on that device or disconnect the headphones there before retrying.
Will a factory reset always fix pairing?
No. Resetting can clear damaged or full pairing memory, but it cannot repair a failed battery, case, radio or host adapter. Use only the exact model’s documented initialization procedure because it deletes saved pairings and may erase personal settings.
What if the headphones pair with my phone but not my Windows PC?
The headphones are probably functional. Remove the Windows entry, restart, add the device again, run the Windows 11 Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter if applicable, and check the adapter, driver, updates and Bluetooth services.
Best Value
What if they fail with both my phone and computer?
Confirm charging and pairing mode, then test one more known-good host if possible. Failure across multiple hosts points to the headphones, case, stored pairing data or firmware. Follow the model-specific reset instructions and contact the manufacturer if the fault remains.
Do I need to buy a Bluetooth transmitter?
Only if the host lacks compatible Bluetooth or its built-in adapter is demonstrably defective. A transmitter does not cure stale pairings, an occupied connection, an uncharged headset or a headphone that never enters discovery mode.
How long should I keep trying pairing mode?
Use the model’s documented timing. Sony’s WF-1000XM4 instructions, for example, say pairing mode is canceled after five minutes. If a different model gives no timing, repeat the procedure and begin scanning immediately rather than assuming another product’s timeout applies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my Bluetooth headphones powered on but invisible?
They may not be in discovery mode, may have auto-connected to another device, or may need charging. Put them into the exact model’s pairing mode, disconnect competing hosts, and scan nearby.
Should I reset headphones that will not pair?
Only after charging, forgetting the old entry, restarting both devices and testing another host. Use the manufacturer’s exact initialization procedure because a reset deletes saved pairing information.
How can I tell whether Windows or the headphones are at fault?
Try another Bluetooth accessory on Windows and try the headphones on another phone or computer. If the headphones work elsewhere, investigate Windows settings, drivers, services or updates; if they fail everywhere, contact the headphone manufacturer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do I need to buy anything to fix a pairing problem?
Usually no. Charging, model-specific pairing mode, removing stale entries, disconnecting other hosts and restarting are free. An adapter is relevant only when the computer lacks compatible Bluetooth or its adapter is defective.
Why do my headphones connect and then disconnect?
Another paired phone or computer may reclaim them, the battery may be low, or the original host may have a driver or service issue. Disable Bluetooth on competing hosts, charge the headphones and test a second host.
Are Android Bluetooth menus the same on every phone?
No. Labels and controls vary by manufacturer, software version and hardware. Google’s guide notes that some referenced controls require Android 15 or later, so use the equivalent options shown on your device.
The Bottom Line
Start with charge, Bluetooth enabled, close range and the exact model’s discovery mode. Then forget stale entries, disconnect other hosts, restart and test a second device. Reset only with official model-specific instructions. If the headphones fail with multiple known-good hosts, document the symptoms and escalate to the manufacturer; buying a replacement is not the first troubleshooting step.
