How to Fix Bluetooth Earbuds That Won’t Connect to an Android Tablet

Most Bluetooth earbud connection failures are fixed without replacing anything: charge the earbuds and case, keep them close to the tablet, turn Bluetooth on, place the earbuds in pairing mode, and add them from the tablet’s Bluetooth settings. If the earbuds were paired before but will not reconnect, forget the saved entry, restart the tablet, and pair again. Fast Pair is optional; manual pairing works when the pop-up does not appear.

Start with the right diagnosis

“Won’t connect” can describe several different situations. The fix depends on whether the tablet can see the earbuds, whether the earbuds are already saved, and whether another device has claimed the connection.

The earbuds do not appear in the Bluetooth list Charge them, move them close to the tablet, and put them into pairing mode using the earbud maker’s instructions.
The earbuds appear under saved or paired devices but show as disconnected Turn Bluetooth on and tap the saved earbud name to reconnect.
A Fast Pair notification never appears Do not assume incompatibility. Open Bluetooth settings and pair manually.
The tablet finds the earbuds but pairing fails repeatedly Forget the saved entry, restart the tablet, re-enter pairing mode, and add the earbuds as a new device.
The earbuds connect briefly, then drop out Check charge, firmware, distance, and possible 2.4 GHz interference. These checks are specifically recommended for Pixel Buds; other models may require their own support steps.
The earbuds never appear after all basic checks Verify compatibility and model-specific troubleshooting with both the tablet and earbud manufacturers before concluding that the hardware is defective.

Pairing and reconnecting are different

Pairing is the first relationship between the tablet and the earbuds. The earbuds must be discoverable, usually by entering pairing mode, and the tablet then saves the relationship. Reconnecting uses that saved relationship: the earbuds are already listed, so you select them instead of adding a new device.

A saved device can remain in the paired list even when it is powered off, out of range, or connected to something else. Its presence in the list does not prove that it is currently connected. Android normally shows a connected state after the link succeeds, while an available or saved-but-disconnected state means another step is still needed.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

1. Check power, distance, and Bluetooth

Begin with reversible checks before deleting settings or resetting hardware.

  • Charge both earbuds. If they use a charging case, charge the case as well and make sure each earbud is seated correctly so its contacts can charge.
  • Keep the open case or earbuds close to the tablet while pairing. A short distance removes a weak-signal variable.
  • Turn the tablet’s Bluetooth on. If it is already on, switch it off, wait briefly, and switch it on again.
  • Make sure the earbuds are not simply out of power. An earbud with a flat battery may not advertise itself or may disappear during pairing.
  • Temporarily move away from other Bluetooth sources if the earbuds are trying to connect to a different phone, computer, or tablet.

These checks are the starting point in Google’s Pixel Buds connectivity guidance, and they are sensible first checks for any Bluetooth earbuds. They do not establish that every earbud model behaves identically, so use the earbud maker’s instructions for indicator lights, charging contacts, and power controls.

2. Put the earbuds into pairing mode

Turning on the earbuds is not always enough. Pairing mode makes them discoverable to a new host. The exact button, touch gesture, or case procedure varies by model, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than applying a timing from another set of earbuds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When pairing mode is active, the case or earbuds may flash an indicator or produce an audio prompt. If the earbuds were recently connected to another device, disconnect or disable Bluetooth on that device first; otherwise they may immediately reconnect there and stop advertising to the tablet.

3. Add the earbuds from Android settings

Pixel Tablet path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Connected devices.
  3. Open Connection preferences, then tap Bluetooth.
  4. Choose Pair new device.
  5. Put the earbuds in pairing mode and wait for their name to appear.
  6. Tap the earbud name and accept any confirmation shown by Android.

The Pixel Tablet guide describes this path for Android 14 and later. A different Android tablet may use slightly different labels or place Bluetooth under a different settings category.

Other Android tablets

Open the tablet’s Settings app and look for Connected devices, Connections, or Bluetooth. Select an option such as Pair new device. Some versions show an Available devices list that refreshes automatically; if the earbuds do not appear, use a refresh control if one is provided, then confirm that pairing mode is still active.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

If the menu does not match these labels, consult the tablet maker’s current help page. Android’s general instructions note that some steps depend on Android 15 or later and on supporting hardware, so a path shown on one tablet cannot be assumed to exist on another.

4. Use Fast Pair only when it is available

Fast Pair can display a notification when a supported accessory is close to an Android device, but it is an optional convenience rather than a requirement for Bluetooth audio.

For the Pixel Tablet’s Fast Pair flow, Google lists Android 6.0 or higher, Bluetooth enabled, and Location enabled as prerequisites. If a supported accessory triggers a notification, follow the on-screen pairing prompt. Fast Pair availability and labels can vary with the Android release, tablet hardware, and accessory.

No notification does not prove that the earbuds are incompatible. Open the Bluetooth settings described above and pair manually. Manual pairing is the fallback Google documents when the Fast Pair prompt is absent.

5. Reconnect earbuds that are already paired

If the earbud name is already listed, do not add a second entry immediately. Turn on Bluetooth, make sure the earbuds are powered and nearby, and tap the saved name. Android should change the state to Connected when the link is established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If tapping the entry does nothing, check whether the earbuds are connected to another nearby source. Disable Bluetooth on that source or put the earbuds back into pairing mode according to their instructions. A saved tablet entry can remain intact while another device is using the earbuds.

6. Forget the old entry and pair again

A saved Bluetooth record can become stale after a failed connection, a tablet update, or a change on the earbud side. Removing that record forces a new negotiation.

  1. Open the tablet’s Bluetooth settings.
  2. Tap the gear, information icon, or settings control beside the earbud name.
  3. Choose Forget, Unpair, or the equivalent label, then confirm.
  4. Turn Bluetooth off and on again if the tablet still shows the old entry.
  5. Restart the tablet.
  6. Place the earbuds in pairing mode again.
  7. Return to Pair new device and select the earbuds as a new device.

Google’s Android guidance describes forgetting or unpairing as the way to remove the saved relationship; paired devices remain paired until you explicitly unpair them. Restarting before the second attempt is useful when the first retry does not discover the earbuds.

7. Reset only with instructions for the exact earbud model

A reset can clear earbud-side settings, but reset controls are not standardized. Button duration, case position, and whether the earbuds must be inserted differ by model. Applying a procedure from another brand can leave the earbuds powered off, erase useful settings, or simply do nothing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Pixel Buds, Google documents a model-specific flow in which the buds are seated in the open case and the pairing button is held for three seconds to enter pairing mode. The same support material gives longer reset procedures for particular Pixel Buds configurations. Those timings should not be treated as universal instructions for other earbuds.

Use the earbud maker’s support page or manual to identify whether its procedure is called reset, factory reset, or clear pairing data. After a reset, repeat the tablet-side process: restart if needed, open Bluetooth settings, put the earbuds into pairing mode, and add them as a new device.

8. Reduce interference and check firmware

For Pixel Buds that connect unreliably, Google recommends checking for current firmware and moving away from nearby devices that can interfere in the 2.4 GHz band. Examples include Wi-Fi routers, wireless speakers, and microwave ovens. Try the pairing test in a different room or with those devices temporarily farther away.

This is model-specific support advice, not a guarantee that interference is the cause on every Android tablet. Still, it is a useful isolation test when the earbuds appear, connect, and then drop out. If the earbud maker provides a firmware update tool or app, follow its current instructions and keep the earbuds charged during the update. Do not interrupt an update unless the manufacturer tells you how to recover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Check compatibility without guessing

There is no universal compatibility matrix for every Android tablet and every earbud model. Bluetooth audio is broadly supported, but individual accessories can depend on Android version, supported profiles, companion software, or a model-specific reset process.

If the earbuds never appear after they are charged, close to the tablet, and correctly placed in pairing mode, check both manufacturers’ compatibility and troubleshooting documentation. Confirm the tablet’s Android version, the exact earbud model (including generation), and whether the maker lists that combination as supported. A missing Fast Pair notification alone is not evidence of incompatibility because manual pairing can still work.

Use this decision sequence when the first attempt fails

  1. Not visible: charge the earbuds and case, move them close, disable Bluetooth on other nearby hosts, and re-enter pairing mode.
  2. Visible but cannot be added: forget any old entry, restart the tablet, and try manual pairing again.
  3. Saved but disconnected: tap the saved name with Bluetooth on, then check whether another device has connected to the earbuds.
  4. Connects then drops: test at close range, move away from 2.4 GHz sources, and check model-specific firmware guidance.
  5. Still absent: follow the exact earbud reset procedure, then verify compatibility with both manufacturers.

Change one variable at a time. For example, do not reset the earbuds, change Android settings, and move to another room simultaneously; otherwise you will not know which action solved the problem or introduced a new one.

Menu and Android-version differences

Android settings are not identical across tablet manufacturers or releases. One tablet may call the area Connected devices, while another uses Connections or places Bluetooth directly in the main Settings screen. The location of Pair new device, the refresh control, and the forget command can also differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Pixel Tablet instructions cited above describe steps for Android 14 and later, while Google’s general Android guidance notes that some features depend on Android 15 or later and compatible hardware. Treat the labels on your own tablet as authoritative. If an option is missing, use the tablet maker’s help for that exact model and Android release rather than installing an unrelated pairing utility.

When troubleshooting points to a hardware or support issue

Consider contacting support for the tablet or earbuds when all of the following are true: the earbuds are charged, they are definitely in pairing mode, Bluetooth is enabled, the devices are close together, old pairings have been removed, and a restart plus a model-correct reset has not made them discoverable.

Before contacting support, record the tablet model, Android version, exact earbud model and generation, whether the earbuds appear on another compatible device, and the step at which the process fails. This information helps support distinguish a tablet Bluetooth problem from an earbud battery, charging-case, firmware, or radio problem.

If the earbuds pair successfully with another device but never appear on the tablet, focus on the tablet maker’s compatibility and Bluetooth troubleshooting. If they never appear anywhere after charging and the documented reset, focus on the earbud maker or the charging hardware. Neither outcome by itself proves a universal incompatibility.

Should you replace the earbuds?

Replacement is a last resort, not the first fix for a missing Fast Pair pop-up or a stale saved connection. If you eventually compare another set, verify three things before buying: compatibility with the tablet’s Android version, whether the accessory supports the pairing method you intend to use, and whether the manufacturer publishes clear reset and support instructions.

Choose based on documented compatibility and support rather than an assumption that a new brand will solve a settings problem. Keep the original earbuds’ model information until the connection issue is resolved or support confirms a hardware failure.

Final checklist

  • Earbuds and charging case have charge.
  • Earbuds are close to the tablet.
  • Bluetooth is enabled and has been toggled once.
  • Other nearby devices are not holding the earbud connection.
  • Earbuds are in their manufacturer-defined pairing mode.
  • Fast Pair prerequisites are met when using Fast Pair: supported accessory, Android 6.0 or higher, Bluetooth on, and Location on.
  • Manual pairing has been tried through the tablet’s Bluetooth settings.
  • A stale saved entry has been forgotten and the tablet restarted.
  • Any reset used matches the exact earbud model.
  • Firmware, interference, Android-version, and compatibility checks have been considered.
