How to fix Bluetooth earbuds that keep disconnecting or dropping audio

Most Bluetooth-earbud dropouts come from a weak or obstructed radio link, interference, another device competing for the connection, or a stale pairing or software state. The fastest way to find the cause is to play audio stored on your phone or computer with the earbuds nearby, then test range, competing connections, power, pairing, and updates in that order. If the earbuds still cut out with several compatible source devices after a clean re-pair and current software, the manufacturer should assess them for service.

First determine whether Bluetooth or the audio source is failing

A “disconnect” and an audio interruption are not always the same event. Watch the source device’s Bluetooth settings while the sound stops. If the earbuds disappear, show “not connected,” or immediately reconnect, the Bluetooth link itself is breaking. If they remain connected while only one app goes silent, investigate that app, its network connection, or the file being played.

What you observe Check to perform What the result tells you
Bluetooth status changes to disconnected Play a downloaded song or video with the source close to you. A failure with local audio points to the Bluetooth link, pairing state, power, interference, or hardware.
Bluetooth stays connected but streaming pauses Play a downloaded file and try a second app. If local playback is clean, examine the original app, network path, or streaming service before changing Bluetooth settings.
Only one earbud cuts out Check charge and charging contacts for both earbuds, then test after a full charge. An individual bud, contact, or model-specific synchronization problem becomes more likely.
Dropouts occur only in one place Repeat the same audio in an open, quiet location. The location may have radio interference, obstructions, or unusually crowded wireless traffic.

Apple’s support procedure recommends comparing streaming with audio stored on the source device while the source is within a couple of metres. Its April 2, 2026 support article explains that if headphones maintain their connection without distortion during that test, the cause of interruptions in other situations should be investigated outside the basic Bluetooth link. This comparison is a diagnostic, not a guarantee that every streaming problem is caused by the network.

Run each comparison long enough to reproduce the problem, rather than judging it from a single clean minute. Use the same downloaded track, similar volume, and the same source whenever possible. Write down whether the sound pauses, becomes distorted, switches to the other earbud, or causes a visible Bluetooth disconnect. Those details prevent a normal buffering pause from being confused with a radio failure.

Why earbuds drop audio

Distance and physical obstruction

Bluetooth works best when the phone, tablet, or computer is close to the earbuds with a clear path between them. A wall, metal object, a laptop bag, or your own body can weaken that path. Sony’s WF-1000XM5 guidance specifically lists walls, metal, body obstruction, and crowded trains or stations as circumstances in which sound may skip. These conditions are possibilities, not proof that one particular object is responsible.

A phone in a back pocket or backpack may have a less favorable path than a phone held in the same hand. Do not change several variables at once: first move the source closer, then repeat with the source in its usual position. If the close-range test is stable but normal carrying is not, range or body blocking is more likely than a failed pairing record.

Radio congestion and interference

Wi-Fi equipment, nearby Bluetooth devices, other wireless communications, and an operating microwave can coincide with degraded audio. Samsung names Wi-Fi routers and running microwaves in its Galaxy Buds troubleshooting guidance. Move away from the suspected source and repeat the same track; a change in behavior is useful evidence, even though it does not identify a single culprit.

Busy stations, offices, classrooms, and homes with many active wireless accessories can produce a different result from an open room. Treat the quiet-location test as a comparison, not a promise that you must permanently avoid Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices. Keeping the source closer or changing position may be enough.

Multipoint and secondary devices

Multipoint lets earbuds remain connected to two sources, such as a phone and a laptop. A watch, tablet, second phone, or computer can also compete for attention. Sony warns that simultaneous two-device multipoint may make skipping more likely, while Bose troubleshooting describes interruptions associated with secondary devices. A temporary single-device test is the cleanest way to check this variable.

Disconnecting an extra device is different from deleting its pairing. For diagnosis, turn off its Bluetooth or disconnect the earbuds in that device’s menu. If the audio becomes stable, reconnect devices one at a time and test after each connection. That identifies whether multipoint switching or one particular secondary source is involved.

Pairing, power, and software state

A damaged or incomplete pairing record can produce repeated reconnects even when the radio environment is good. Low charge, dirty charging contacts, an outdated source operating system, or earbud firmware can create similar symptoms. The exact reset and update process varies by model, so do not apply a button sequence intended for a different product.

One bud can also be at a different charge level from the other even when the case reports a charge percentage. If only one side cuts out, check that bud’s contact and charging indication before assuming the whole Bluetooth link is failing.

A complete troubleshooting sequence

Perform the tests in order and change one major variable at a time. That leaves you with a useful diagnosis instead of several simultaneous changes whose effects cannot be separated.

  1. Reproduce the fault with local audio

Download a song, podcast episode, or video to the source device. Turn off streaming for this test, keep the source within a couple of metres of the earbuds, and play the file for several minutes. Try a second local file if the first one behaves normally. If local playback remains clear while streaming fails, concentrate first on the original app, its network connection, or its download quality. If local playback also cuts out, continue through the Bluetooth checks below.

Test more than one app when possible. A single app can pause because of its own network or playback state while the Bluetooth connection remains healthy. Conversely, a dropout that occurs with two local files and more than one app is stronger evidence of a connection, power, or hardware issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Shorten the distance and remove obstacles

Keep the source in the same room and close to your head rather than in a back pocket, backpack, or another room. Remove obvious barriers between the devices. Repeat the local-audio test while standing still, then while walking normally. A dropout that appears only at greater distance or around a wall indicates a range or obstruction sensitivity; it does not necessarily mean the earbuds are defective.

  3. Repeat in a quiet radio environment

Leave crowded transit areas, move away from active microwaves and large wireless equipment, and test away from a dense cluster of phones, computers, and Bluetooth accessories. Keep the audio and volume settings the same. If the earbuds work in the quiet location but not the original one, treat the result as environmental evidence. You may need to keep the source closer or change where you use the earbuds rather than replace them.

  4. Remove competing connections

Disconnect the earbuds from every extra source except the one being tested. Pause or turn off Bluetooth on a watch, tablet, laptop, second phone, or other nearby device. If the manufacturer’s app has a multipoint control, disable it temporarily. Forgetting the extra device is unnecessary for this test; a simple disconnect is enough. If the dropouts stop, reconnect devices one at a time to identify which normal connection causes the interruption.

  5. Restart both ends

Place the earbuds in their case and close it, then restart them using the manufacturer’s instructions. Restart the phone, tablet, or computer as well. After both have completed their restart, connect only the test source and replay local audio. A restart clears transient radio and audio-service states without deleting your saved pairings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  6. Forget the pairing and pair cleanly

Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings, select the earbuds, and choose the option labeled Forget, Unpair, or the equivalent. Put the earbuds into their official pairing mode and pair them again as if they were new. Apple’s troubleshooting flow includes unpairing, restarting the source, and pairing again. Use the exact procedure for your earbud model; a reset combination from another model can leave the earbuds in an unexpected state.

After pairing, test before restoring multipoint or reconnecting every saved device. Otherwise an old secondary connection can reintroduce the symptom and make a successful re-pair appear ineffective.

  7. Verify charge and charging contacts

Confirm that both earbuds and the case show charge. If either bud is not charging reliably, inspect the contacts for dirt or residue and ensure each bud is seated correctly. Samsung’s Galaxy Buds guidance recommends charging for at least 30 minutes and checking the contacts when connection problems persist. Do not assume the case’s percentage means both earbuds have the same charge.

  8. Install current software

Check the phone, tablet, or computer for operating-system updates. Then use the earbud maker’s official app or instructions to check for firmware updates. Update methods, menus, and restart requirements differ by model. Keep the earbuds in their case or connected to power exactly as the maker specifies during an update, and retest local audio after it completes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  9. Compare another source and another headset

Pair the earbuds with a second compatible source device, if one is available. Then connect a different Bluetooth headset to the original source. Keep the test conditions close—same room, same local file, and one active connection. Bose recommends this type of comparison as a diagnostic. The result shows which side the symptom follows, but it does not by itself prove a hardware defect.

If the earbuds fail on two compatible sources while another headset works on the original source, note that pattern for support. If only the original phone or computer fails, concentrate on that device’s operating system, Bluetooth settings, or hardware instead of resetting the earbuds repeatedly.

Use the results to choose the next action

Comparison If the symptom changes Practical interpretation
Downloaded audio versus streaming Downloaded audio is clear; streaming cuts out. Investigate the app, network path, or stream first. Bluetooth is not yet shown to be the cause.
Close, unobstructed location versus distant or obstructed location Only the distant or obstructed test fails. Range, walls, metal, or body position is influencing the radio link.
One active source versus multipoint or several sources Single-device use is stable. Connection switching or a secondary device is implicated; keep multipoint off or reconnect devices selectively.
Original source versus another compatible source The earbuds fail only with the original source. Concentrate on that source’s Bluetooth settings, operating system, or hardware.
Earbuds versus another headset on the same source Another headset works normally. The issue follows the earbuds more closely, although a model-specific compatibility problem remains possible.
Before versus after clean pairing and updates The problem disappears after re-pairing or updating. The earlier pairing or software state was a likely contributor; keep the working configuration and monitor it.

No single comparison proves a defective component. For example, earbuds that work with a second phone may still have a compatibility issue with the first phone, and a quiet-room success may simply mean the original location is unusually congested. Use the pattern to choose the next test, not to assign blame prematurely.

Manufacturer-specific details worth checking

Apple sources and wireless headphones

Apple’s April 2, 2026 support article puts the stored-audio, close-range comparison near the start of its process. It also directs users to unpair the headphones, restart the source device, and pair again when interruptions continue. The labels in iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and other source systems can differ, so follow the Bluetooth menu shown on the device you are actually using.

Samsung Galaxy Buds

Samsung’s US Galaxy Buds troubleshooting page is model-specific where it discusses charging, contacts, and case behavior. Give the earbuds at least 30 minutes of charging when charge is uncertain, check that both buds touch the case contacts, and use the Galaxy Buds app or Samsung’s instructions for updates and re-pairing. If one or both buds still cannot connect after those steps, Samsung says service may be needed.

Sony WF-1000XM5

Sony’s WF-1000XM5 Help Guide identifies frequent skipping as more likely in conditions such as walls, metal, body obstruction, crowded stations, nearby Bluetooth devices, and other wireless communications. It also cautions that simultaneous two-device multipoint can make skipping more likely. Test with multipoint disabled before changing other settings.

Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen)

Bose troubleshooting for intermittent audio highlights interruptions involving a secondary device and suggests connecting another pair of headphones to the audio device as a diagnostic comparison. The menu names and reset process depend on the Bose model, so use its official instructions rather than a generic reset sequence.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When to stop troubleshooting and request service

Contact the earbud manufacturer for model-specific support when dropouts continue with downloaded audio in a quiet, close-range test, after both ends have been restarted, after a clean re-pair, and after available operating-system and firmware updates. Escalation is especially appropriate when the symptom occurs with more than one compatible source or when one or both earbuds cannot connect at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before contacting support, record the earbud model, source-device models and operating-system versions, whether the failure affects one or both buds, whether Bluetooth shows a disconnection, and which comparison changed the result. Note whether multipoint was enabled and whether the problem appeared only in a particular location. This information lets support skip generic steps and focus on the component or compatibility path that the tests implicate.

Do not repeatedly apply factory-reset combinations while troubleshooting. A reset can erase pairings and settings without addressing interference or an app problem, and the correct sequence is different across models. Use a reset only when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it or support directs you to do so.

Do not treat an accessory as the universal fix

A new charging cable, replacement ear tips, Bluetooth adapter, or replacement earbuds may be appropriate after a diagnosis, but none is an evidence-backed solution for every dropout. A cable cannot correct radio interference, ear tips do not repair pairing records, and an adapter can introduce its own compatibility questions. Resolve whether the symptom follows the stream, environment, source, or earbuds before spending money.

Official manufacturer procedures are diagnostic guidance rather than controlled tests proving that one step fixes every model. No reliable prevalence figure establishes how often earbuds disconnect, so claims that a particular remedy works for a stated percentage of users would be misleading. The sequence above is designed to isolate the cause and identify when professional service is the sensible next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my Bluetooth earbuds keep disconnecting but still show as connected?

If Bluetooth remains connected while sound stops, test a downloaded file and a second app. Clean local playback points toward the original app, its network path, or streaming service rather than a broken Bluetooth link. If local files also fail, continue with range, interference, multipoint, pairing, charge, and update checks.

Can Wi-Fi or a microwave make earbuds cut out?

They can coincide with degraded audio. Samsung specifically lists Wi-Fi routers and running microwaves, while Sony lists nearby wireless communications and crowded locations. Move away, repeat the same local track, and compare with a quiet location; the change is evidence of an environmental factor, not proof of one exact culprit.

Should I turn off multipoint to stop Bluetooth skipping?

Temporarily, yes. Disconnect watches, tablets, laptops, second phones, and other sources, or disable multipoint in the maker’s app. Sony warns that simultaneous two-device multipoint may increase skipping, and Bose describes interruptions involving secondary devices. Reconnect sources one at a time after testing.

How close should my phone be during a dropout test?

Keep the source nearby, within a couple of metres, in the same room with as few obstacles as possible. Avoid a back pocket, bag, wall, or metal barrier during the first test. If close-range audio is stable but normal carrying is not, range or body obstruction is likely contributing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to forget my earbuds before pairing them again?

For a clean re-pair, use the source device’s Forget or Unpair command, then place the earbuds in their official pairing mode and pair them again. Restart the source as well. Do not use a reset-button sequence from another model; follow the exact instructions for your earbuds.

Why does only one earbud keep cutting out?

Check that bud’s charge and charging contact first. Both earbuds may not have the same charge even when the case displays a percentage. Charge for at least 30 minutes when uncertain, verify that each bud is seated on its contacts, and then retest before assuming the radio link or both earbuds are defective.

What updates should I install?

Check the phone, tablet, or computer for operating-system updates, then use the earbud maker’s official app or instructions for firmware updates. Update menus and power requirements vary by model. Follow the maker’s procedure and retest downloaded audio after the update.

When should I ask the manufacturer for service?

Escalate when downloaded audio still drops in a quiet, close-range test after restarting both ends, cleanly re-pairing, and installing available updates. Service is especially sensible when the failure occurs with multiple compatible source devices or one or both earbuds cannot connect at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with downloaded audio close to the source, then test obstacles, interference, secondary connections, restarts, a clean pairing, charge, and updates one at a time. Compare another source or headset before concluding that the earbuds are faulty. If the same dropout persists across compatible sources with current software, contact the manufacturer for model-specific service.
