Most MOMENTUM 5 Bluetooth problems can be corrected without replacing the headphones. Start by turning the headset on manually, keeping the source within about 10 meters with a clear line of sight, and removing the old Bluetooth record before pairing again. For intermittent dropouts in busy radio environments, disable HiRes or Lossless audio in Smart Control Plus. If switching between two devices is the problem, remember that MOMENTUM 5 multipoint changes automatically according to playback, notifications, or calls; manual Windows switching is done through the phone app.
Work through the least-destructive fixes first: power and range checks, a fresh pairing, codec and interference changes, firmware updating, a normal reset, and finally a factory reset. The sequence matters because a factory reset erases stored settings while a normal reset does not.

What each Bluetooth symptom usually means
Different symptoms point to different fixes. A phone that cannot find the headphones needs a pairing-record or pairing-mode correction. Audio that cuts out after a successful connection is more often caused by range, obstructions, radio congestion, or a demanding codec. Audio that jumps to a laptop or phone is usually normal multipoint behavior rather than a failed Bluetooth link.

| Symptom | Most useful first check | What to do next | Cost and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| The MOMENTUM 5 does not appear in Bluetooth settings | Confirm the headphones are on and in pairing mode | Delete the old MOMENTUM 5 entry on the source, then pair again | Free and reversible |
| Connection drops or sound stutters | Move the source within typical 10-meter, free-line-of-sight range | Turn off HiRes or Lossless audio in Smart Control Plus; update firmware if it continues | Free; settings can be restored |
| Audio changes to another device | Check which paired device is playing, notifying, or receiving a call | Use Smart Control Plus on a phone when you need to choose the Windows device manually | Free; forgetting a device is reversible by pairing again |
| Nothing changes after software fixes | Perform the documented reset sequence | Use factory defaults only after updating firmware; contact support if the fault remains | Reset is free; factory defaults erase configuration |
| Only one computer or phone fails | Test a second source at close range | Repair or update the affected source’s Bluetooth stack before blaming the headset | Usually free source-side checks |
MOMENTUM 5 uses Bluetooth 5.4 and supports two-device multipoint. Those capabilities explain both its flexibility and some apparently unexpected switching. A reliable diagnosis starts by changing one variable at a time: distance, source, codec setting, or stored pairing record.
Before troubleshooting: make the test fair
Charge the headset enough to complete a firmware update and a sustained playback test. Keep the phone or computer awake, disable automatic source switching on the source if that option exists, and note whether the problem affects music, calls, or both. A dropout that occurs only during calls may involve the source’s hands-free profile, while a failure in every mode points more broadly to range, pairing, firmware, or hardware.
For a clean baseline, test one source at a time in the same room, with the source within a few meters of the headphones. Temporarily pause nearby Bluetooth accessories and move away from dense Wi-Fi equipment, USB 3 hubs, wireless game controllers, and crowded public spaces. Restore your normal setup only after the baseline is stable.

Check power first
MOMENTUM 5 does not turn on automatically in the same way as MOMENTUM 4. Press the power control and verify that the headset is actually switched on before diagnosing Bluetooth. A headset that is off can look like a pairing failure or a dead connection. If the indicator or voice prompt does not respond, charge it and try the power control again before changing phone settings.
Stay inside the practical Bluetooth range
The instruction manual gives a typical free-line-of-sight transmission range of up to 10 meters. Walls, furniture, a body between the phone and headset, and metal objects can reduce that distance. Put the source on the same side of your body as the headset and test in the same room before changing settings.
When the headphones leave range, the manual says sound quality deteriorates progressively, followed by the voice prompt “Lost connection” and a complete break. MOMENTUM 5 should reconnect automatically after you return to range, provided Bluetooth remains enabled and the source has not connected to another device. If it does not reconnect, unlock the source, open its Bluetooth menu, and select MOMENTUM 5 again rather than immediately deleting every record.
Test the environment, not just the headphones
Busy offices, transit stations, gyms, airports, and homes with many active Bluetooth or Wi-Fi devices can create radio congestion. If the headset works normally in a quiet room but cuts out in a crowded location, treat interference as the leading suspect rather than immediately resetting it. Compare the same track at the same volume in a quiet room and the problem location; this simple A/B test is more useful than changing several settings at once.
Separate a headset fault from a source fault
Pair the MOMENTUM 5 with a second phone or computer and keep both tests close to the headphones. If only one source drops, restart or update that source, remove its old Bluetooth record, and check whether another Bluetooth accessory is competing for audio. If both sources fail in the same place and at the same distance after a fresh pairing, continue with the codec, firmware, and reset steps below.
How to fix a MOMENTUM 5 pairing failure
Pairing works only when both sides are discoverable. A stale entry saved by the phone or computer can prevent a clean handshake, so remove that record before trying again.

- Turn on the headphones. Do not assume they woke automatically.
- Put the MOMENTUM 5 into pairing mode. For a device you are adding, hold the power button for about five seconds until the pairing prompt is heard or the headset is shown as discoverable.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the source and remove, forget, or delete the existing MOMENTUM 5 entry. The wording varies by operating system; remove every old MOMENTUM 5 record if more than one is listed.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again on the source if the old entry remains visible, then start a fresh device search.
- Select MOMENTUM 5 from the newly discovered-device list and complete pairing. Keep the source close to the headset during this process.
- Play a short test track and make a call to verify both media and call profiles.
Do not begin by pairing a second device while the first source still contains a corrupted record. The old record must be deleted on the source, not merely hidden from view. If the source asks for a PIN or shows several similarly named entries, cancel the attempt, remove the records, and start discovery again rather than guessing at a code.
If the second device will not pair
MOMENTUM 5 supports two paired devices. Put the headset into pairing mode again by holding the power button for five seconds, then search from the second phone, tablet, or computer. If two records already exist and the new source is refused, forget an unused record on one of the sources and repeat the process. Pair the devices in the order you expect to use them, then test a notification and a music track on each.
Pairing a second device does not mean both devices play simultaneously. Multipoint maintains two connections, but the active audio path follows playback, notifications, or calls. Stop media on the first source before judging the second pairing as unsuccessful.
How to stop intermittent dropouts
Disable HiRes or Lossless audio in a crowded place
Sennheiser’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends turning off HiRes or Lossless audio in Smart Control Plus when you are in a crowded environment. Open the app, select the MOMENTUM 5, find the audio-quality or codec setting, and switch HiRes or Lossless off. This lowers radio and data pressure and is a targeted interference test, not a guarantee that every dropout will disappear.
Retest in the same location after the change. If the connection remains unstable in a quiet room at close range, interference is less likely to be the only cause. Restore the higher-quality setting later in a quiet environment if the connection remains reliable there.
Separate range problems from source problems
Keep one source connected, place it within a few meters of the headset, and pause other Bluetooth accessories temporarily. If dropouts stop, add the other accessories back one at a time. This identifies whether the failure follows distance, a particular source, or the surrounding radio environment. Keep the source out of a bag or a rear pocket during the test, because your body can block the path even when the measured distance is short.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCheck the source’s Bluetooth profile and codec
A standard Bluetooth source can still play audio, but codec options differ. If you need aptX and the source does not provide it, Sennheiser’s BTD 700 Bluetooth adapter is an optional compatibility solution that pairs with MOMENTUM 5 and enables aptX. It is not a universal dropout cure: it cannot correct a damaged headset, severe interference, an obstructed path, or a failing computer Bluetooth stack.
Compare the cost and reversibility before buying anything. Changing the app codec setting is free and reversible. Buying a BTD 700 adds hardware cost and another connection point, but can be useful for a desktop, television, or other source that lacks aptX. Confirm that the source has the adapter’s required connection method and verify current listing, regional availability, and any affiliate eligibility before purchase.
Why does Bluetooth keep switching to the wrong device?
With two devices paired, MOMENTUM 5 automatically changes the active connection according to which device is playing audio or has notifications or calls. A laptop can therefore take the headset when a video starts, while a phone can take it when a call arrives. This behavior is the expected multipoint rule, not necessarily a disconnection. The same handoff can happen when a silent-looking notification activates the phone’s Bluetooth audio profile.

Stop an unwanted handoff
- Pause media on the device you do not want to use.
- Dismiss or silence nonessential notifications on that device while listening.
- End calls fully; a device that still holds an active call profile can retain priority.
- For a permanent change, forget the unused device on the headset’s source or pair only the device you need during the session.
- When testing, leave only one source paired so an automatic handoff cannot be mistaken for a dropout.
Manually choose a Windows device
Sennheiser’s documented manual-switching method uses Smart Control Plus on a phone. Open the app while both devices are paired, select MOMENTUM 5, and use its connection-management control to choose the desired source. Windows Bluetooth settings alone may not provide the same manual multipoint control; changing the default playback device in Windows does not always force the headset to abandon an active phone connection.
If the app cannot see the headphones, first restore the phone’s Bluetooth connection and keep the app updated. Do not factory-reset merely because Windows shows the wrong output; check which source is actively playing or handling a call first.
Update firmware before a full reset
The instruction manual recommends keeping firmware current for best performance. Connect MOMENTUM 5 to Smart Control Plus, allow the app to identify the headset, and install the latest firmware it offers. Keep the headphones powered, the phone nearby, and the app open until the update completes.
Test pairing, playback, and multipoint after the update. Updating is reversible only through a later firmware release, so do it before erasing settings. Do not interrupt power or Bluetooth during installation. If the app cannot complete an update, stabilize the phone connection, charge the headset, and retry before moving to factory defaults.
Reset MOMENTUM 5 in the correct order
There are two different reset levels. Use the normal reset first; reserve factory defaults for persistent software problems.
Recommended Free Tools
| Action | How to perform it | What it changes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal reset | Hold the specified button combination for 20 seconds | Restarts the headset while preserving pairing settings | The headset is unresponsive or a temporary Bluetooth state is stuck |
| Delete pairing list | In Smart Control Plus, remove the stored Bluetooth pairing list | Clears saved device records without necessarily erasing every app setting | Old or duplicate records prevent new pairing |
| Factory default settings | Use the Smart Control Plus “Factory default settings” function | Returns the headset to its initial software state and removes stored configuration | Firmware is current and pairing or switching still fails |
Because the normal reset preserves pairing settings, it is the least disruptive restart. Deleting the pairing list is more targeted when records are corrupt. Factory defaults are the least reversible software step: plan to pair every source again and reapply preferences afterward.
Recommended recovery sequence
- Check power, range, and the source’s Bluetooth state.
- Forget the old MOMENTUM 5 record and pair again.
- Disable HiRes or Lossless audio if the environment is crowded.
- Install the latest firmware through Smart Control Plus.
- Perform the 20-second normal reset if the headset remains unstable.
- Delete the app’s pairing list if stored records appear corrupt.
- Use “Factory default settings” only after the previous steps fail, then pair from scratch.
- Contact Sennheiser/Sonova Consumer Hearing support if the fault survives the factory reset.
Battery, adapter, and service decisions
Do not confuse battery limits with Bluetooth failure
Sennheiser quotes up to 57 hours of Bluetooth music playback with ANC enabled under its stated iPhone and mid-volume test condition. Actual runtime varies with volume, codec, calls, ANC use, temperature, and battery age. Charge the headset before troubleshooting so a low battery does not interrupt pairing or updates. A shorter runtime by itself does not prove a Bluetooth fault.
When a source adapter is worthwhile
The optional BTD 700 makes sense when a desktop, television, or other source lacks aptX and you specifically need that codec. Verify that the source supports the adapter’s connection method. Buy it as a source-compatibility accessory, not as a promise of immunity from interference or range loss. Its price is separate from the free software troubleshooting steps and varies by seller and region.
When hardware service is appropriate
If the documented software sequence fails on multiple sources at close range, the problem may be hardware or a source-side Bluetooth defect. Record which sources were tested, whether the failure occurs after a factory reset, and whether the “Lost connection” prompt appears. Give those details to Sennheiser/Sonova Consumer Hearing support instead of repeatedly resetting the headset.

The manual identifies the replaceable battery as the BA 500. It also states that availability is limited to the European Union and selected countries, and that replacement requires a PH0 Phillips screwdriver. Do not open the headset unless you can obtain the correct battery for your region and are comfortable with the procedure; otherwise use authorized service. Battery purchase and labor costs depend on region, and the BA 500 is a maintenance option rather than a Bluetooth fix.

- Keep MOMENTUM 5 firmware current through Smart Control Plus.
- Keep the primary source within the typical 10-meter, unobstructed range.
- Remove obsolete Bluetooth records rather than accumulating duplicate MOMENTUM 5 entries.
- Turn off HiRes or Lossless audio in crowded radio environments.
- Remember that two-device multipoint reacts to playback, notifications, and calls.
- Use the phone app for deliberate Windows-device switching.
- Perform a normal reset before a factory reset, and update firmware before either one.
- Escalate to support when the same failure appears on multiple sources after factory defaults.
Frequently asked questions
Why won’t my MOMENTUM 5 pair even though Bluetooth is on?
Bluetooth being enabled on the phone is not enough. Turn on the headphones, hold the power button for about five seconds to enter pairing mode, forget every old MOMENTUM 5 record on the phone, and search again. Keep the devices close together while pairing.
Why do my headphones disconnect only in public places?
That pattern points to radio congestion or a blocked signal path. Stay within a few meters, turn off HiRes or Lossless audio in Smart Control Plus, and compare performance in a quiet room. If failures continue at close range in quiet conditions, update firmware and follow the reset sequence.
Will returning within range reconnect MOMENTUM 5 automatically?
The manual says reconnection should occur after you return within range. The typical free-line-of-sight range is up to 10 meters, but walls and other obstructions reduce it. Reconnection can also be delayed if the source has connected to another device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can MOMENTUM 5 connect to two devices at once?
Yes. It supports two-device multipoint. Audio switches automatically when one device plays audio or has notifications or calls. It is not simultaneous two-source playback, and the active device can change without a Bluetooth failure.
How do I stop my laptop from taking over the headphones?
Pause the laptop’s media, suppress unnecessary notifications, and end any lingering call session. For deliberate Windows switching, use Smart Control Plus on a phone. If you need a single-source session, forget the other device temporarily.
Should I reset before updating firmware?
No. Connect the headset to Smart Control Plus and install the latest firmware first. The manual recommends current firmware for best performance. Use a normal reset afterward if the state remains unstable, and reserve factory defaults for persistent failures.
Is the BTD 700 guaranteed to stop dropouts?
No. Sennheiser positions it as an adapter that pairs with MOMENTUM 5 and enables aptX when the source lacks it. It cannot eliminate severe interference, range loss, a defective headset, or a failing computer Bluetooth stack.
When should I contact Sennheiser or Sonova support?
Escalate after checking power and range, rebuilding the pairing record, disabling HiRes or Lossless in crowded conditions, updating firmware, and completing the documented reset sequence. Tell support which sources failed, the test distance, whether a factory reset changed anything, and whether you heard “Lost connection.”

The Bottom Line
For MOMENTUM 5 Bluetooth problems, start with power, range, and a clean pairing record. Disable HiRes or Lossless audio when radio congestion is likely, and treat two-device switching as expected multipoint behavior. Update firmware before resetting; use the 20-second normal reset before factory defaults. The BTD 700, BA 500 battery, and paid service are conditional options, not universal cures. If the same fault remains after the documented sequence on more than one source, contact Sennheiser/Sonova Consumer Hearing support.
