How to Fix Bluetooth Connection and Pairing Problems With Wireless Headphones

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Most Bluetooth headphone failures have a short, reversible cause: the headphones are not in pairing mode, the battery is too low, an old pairing record is stuck, the source is too far away, or the device is connected but the wrong audio output is selected. Charge the headphones, place them beside the phone or computer, remove the saved pairing, and pair them again. On Windows, also select the headphones as the output device and check the Bluetooth adapter and updates.

Work through the checks below in order. They start with changes that cannot erase settings, then move to forgetting a device and finally to a model-specific reset or hardware diagnosis.

First identify what “not working” means

Bluetooth has several separate states, and each needs a different fix. A headphone name can remain saved in a device’s Bluetooth list without an active radio connection. A device can show as connected while the operating system sends sound to its speakers. Audio can also connect successfully and then cut out because the wireless link is weak or interfered with.

Symptom Most useful first checks
Headphones do not appear in the Bluetooth list Charge them, switch them on, explicitly enter pairing mode, keep them close, and confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the source.
Headphones appear but will not connect Forget or remove the saved entry, put the headphones back into pairing mode, and add them again.
Status says connected but there is no sound Select the headphones as the active audio output and raise the volume on both devices.
Sound cuts out or becomes intermittent Test stored audio nearby, remove obstructions, and move away from crowded wireless activity and other possible interference.
Several Bluetooth devices fail on one PC Check whether the computer has usable Bluetooth hardware, update its adapter driver, install operating-system updates, and restart.

Do these five checks before changing settings

1. Charge the headphones and their case

Connect the headphones to power until they have a useful charge. If they use a charging case, charge the case as well and make sure both earpieces are seated correctly. Microsoft Support notes that some Bluetooth devices do not enter pairing mode or maintain a connection when the battery is low. A low battery can therefore look like a pairing, range, or software fault.

2. Turn the headphones fully on

Remove them from the case if the model powers on that way, or use the power control described in the model’s manual. Watch for the normal indicator light or tone. If the headphones are already connected to another phone, tablet, television, or computer, disconnect that device or switch its Bluetooth off temporarily; many models will not accept a new connection while actively connected elsewhere.

3. Enter pairing mode deliberately

Opening a case or pressing the power button is not always enough. Use the model’s official pairing procedure and wait for the pairing indicator. A saved device name in the Bluetooth menu does not prove that the headphones are currently advertising themselves for a new connection.

4. Put the source nearby

Keep the headphones beside the phone or computer while pairing. Remove thick walls, bags, or metal objects between them. Distance and obstructions are especially important during the first connection, when you are trying to distinguish a discovery problem from an interference problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the source

Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings rather than relying only on a quick-settings icon. Turn Bluetooth off and back on once if the device appears unresponsive. Leave the headphones in pairing mode while you open the list and look for their name.

Pair again after removing a stale connection

When a headphone entry is visible but refuses to connect, the stored pairing credentials may no longer match. Removing the entry and creating a fresh pairing is reversible and is recommended in Microsoft and Apple troubleshooting guidance.

  • SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail
  1. Open Bluetooth settings on the source. Find the headphones under saved, paired, or known devices.
  2. Choose the removal command. The label may be Forget, Forget This Device, Remove device, or similar.
  3. Remove the source from the headphone side if the model offers that control. Some headphones have a stored-device list that can be cleared; follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model.
  4. Restart the headphones. Power them off and on, then put them into pairing mode again.
  5. Add them as a new device. Select the headphone name when it appears and complete any PIN or confirmation prompt.
  6. Test with a short audio clip. Use a local recording or downloaded song before diagnosing streaming, network, or app problems.

If the old entry reappears without offering a fresh connection, remove it again, restart the source device, and repeat the add process while the headphones are visibly in pairing mode.

When Windows says “connected” but you hear nothing

Windows can maintain a Bluetooth connection while sending audio to built-in speakers, a monitor, a dock, or another headset. Output selection is therefore a separate check from pairing.

Select the headphones as the output

  1. Open the Windows sound controls and display the list of available output devices.
  2. Select the connected headphones, not the computer speakers or a monitor.
  3. Play a known-good audio file and raise the Windows volume.
  4. Check the headphone’s own volume controls and mute state.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 use different layouts and labels that can change with updates, so follow the output-device control currently shown on your system. Microsoft’s Windows guidance also recommends cycling Bluetooth off and on, removing and re-adding the device, restarting the PC, checking Windows Update, and updating the Bluetooth adapter driver.

Check the Bluetooth audio profile

For higher-quality stereo playback, Microsoft says the Bluetooth device should support the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP). A device that is connected only through a call-oriented profile may sound narrow or behave differently when an application opens the microphone. Verify the headphone’s supported profiles in its documentation and close applications that may be taking exclusive control of the audio path while you test.

Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter

Windows 11 includes the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for Bluetooth troubleshooting, and follow the diagnostic prompts. Windows 10 presents troubleshooting through different Settings pages. The tool can identify a disabled radio, a driver problem, or a service issue, but it cannot correct an incompatible or physically damaged headphone.

Update the adapter and Windows

Install pending Windows updates, then check the computer manufacturer’s or adapter manufacturer’s driver updates for the Bluetooth hardware. Restart after an installation. If the adapter does not appear in Device Manager, is marked with an error, or repeatedly disappears, investigate the computer’s Bluetooth hardware before repeatedly deleting headphone pairings.

Fix headphones that keep disconnecting or cutting out

Separate streaming problems from Bluetooth problems

Apple recommends playing audio stored on the device, with the source within a couple of metres of the headphones. If stored audio plays cleanly but an online stream breaks up, investigate the network, app, or streaming service. If stored audio also cuts out, concentrate on the Bluetooth link, power, distance, and interference.

Reduce range and obstruction variables

  • Keep the source close to the headphones during the test.
  • Remove bags, thick walls, and other obstructions between them.
  • Try the same test in an open room and then in the location where the failure normally occurs.
  • Keep the source on your body or a nearby surface rather than buried in a pocket or backpack with metal objects.

Move away from possible interference

Test in another location away from dense Wi‑Fi activity, poorly shielded cables, microwaves, and nearby wireless speakers. These are troubleshooting checks, not proof that a particular appliance caused the fault; the goal is to see whether the link becomes stable when the radio environment changes.

Check for competing connections

Turn Bluetooth off on devices that may automatically reconnect to the headphones. A laptop, tablet, television, or second phone can take the connection back just as you begin playback. After removing those competitors, pair the headphones with only the source you are testing.

Use a cross-test to locate the failing side

A second source and a second Bluetooth audio device can quickly show whether the problem follows the headphones or the original phone or computer. Charge the equipment first so a low battery does not produce a misleading result.

  • What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)
  1. Pair the headphones with a different phone or computer in the same nearby location.
  2. Pair another Bluetooth speaker or headset with the original source.
  3. Play stored audio for several minutes on each combination.
  4. Record which combinations discover, connect, produce sound, and remain stable.
  • If the headphones fail with multiple sources while another audio device works on the original source, the headphone side becomes more suspect.
  • If several Bluetooth audio devices fail with one source, investigate that source’s Bluetooth settings, hardware, or drivers.
  • If both combinations work, the original failure was likely a stale pairing, output selection, competing connection, or temporary interference.

This is a diagnostic method, not a guaranteed manufacturer diagnosis. A model can have separate faults in its radio, battery, controls, or audio path, so use the result to choose the next check rather than to assign a definitive cause.

Reset only with the headphone manufacturer’s procedure

There is no universal reset button sequence. A reset can erase the stored device list, custom settings, or other data. Use the exact instructions for the model and revision you own.

What a reset may change

  • Saved phones, computers, and tablets may be deleted.
  • Equalizer, touch-control, language, or other custom settings may return to defaults.
  • You may need to pair every device again.

Why generic button instructions are risky

Controls differ even within one manufacturer’s range. Bose QuietComfort guidance describes clearing the stored Bluetooth device list, while Sony directs owners to model-specific reset or initialization instructions. Those procedures should not be copied to another model. Look up the exact model name and follow its official support page or printed manual.

After a reset

  1. Charge the headphones and case.
  2. Complete the manufacturer’s reset or initialization procedure.
  3. Restart the phone or computer.
  4. Remove any old headphone entry still shown on the source.
  5. Enter pairing mode and add the headphones as a new device.
  6. Test stored audio before changing advanced sound settings.

Phone and tablet considerations

iPhone and iPad

Use the Bluetooth settings to forget the headphones, then pair them again while they are in pairing mode. If disconnections continue, Apple recommends testing stored audio with the source close to the headphones and away from possible interference. Exact menu wording can vary by iOS or iPadOS release, but the sequence remains: forget, restart if needed, pair again, then test locally stored audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android devices

Android menu names and flows vary by manufacturer and operating-system version. Use the device maker’s current instructions for Bluetooth settings, forgetting a device, and resetting network or Bluetooth settings. Do not assume that a menu path from another Android phone applies to yours. The same physical checks still matter: charge the headphones, enter pairing mode, keep them nearby, remove stale pairings, and test with stored audio.

When a USB Bluetooth adapter makes sense on a PC

A USB Bluetooth adapter is a conditional solution, not a universal cure. Consider one only after checking that the PC actually supports Bluetooth and that its built-in adapter is missing, disabled, malfunctioning, or confirmed incompatible. Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes checking Bluetooth support and adapter drivers before replacing or adding hardware.

  • Confirm the adapter supports your Windows edition and has a current driver.
  • Check that the headphone’s Bluetooth profiles, including A2DP for stereo audio, are supported.
  • Disable or remove a failed internal adapter if the PC manufacturer’s instructions require it.
  • Install the adapter’s driver, restart Windows, and repeat the forget-and-pair process.

An adapter will not fix a headphone that is uncharged, not in pairing mode, already connected elsewhere, or failing because of radio interference. Avoid generic “Bluetooth booster” devices and third-party driver utilities unless a specific, documented compatibility problem calls for them.

Common mistakes that waste time

  • Confusing a saved entry with a connection: A name in the paired list is only a record; check the active connection and output device.
  • Pairing while the battery is nearly empty: Low power can prevent pairing mode or cause immediate dropouts.
  • Holding a random button combination: A reset sequence from another model can erase settings or do nothing.
  • Testing only with streaming audio: Network buffering can imitate a Bluetooth fault; use stored audio to isolate the link.
  • Changing many variables at once: Keep the source nearby, test one change, and note whether discovery, connection, output, or stability changed.
  • Buying hardware first: A PC adapter is justified only after the computer’s Bluetooth hardware or driver is shown to be the problem.

A practical decision path

  1. Not discoverable: charge, power on, enter pairing mode, enable Bluetooth, and move the devices close together.
  2. Listed but unable to connect: forget or remove the saved entry on the source, restart both sides, and pair again.
  3. Connected with no sound: select the headphones as the output, check both volume controls, and verify a suitable audio profile.
  4. Audio cuts out: play stored audio nearby, remove obstructions, move away from possible interference, and prevent another device from reconnecting.
  5. Windows-only trouble: cycle Bluetooth, run the Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter on Windows 11, install Windows and adapter updates, and restart.
  6. Failure across several sources: follow the model-specific reset procedure and contact the manufacturer if the fault remains.
  7. Several Bluetooth devices fail on one PC: diagnose the PC adapter or driver; consider a compatible USB adapter only after confirming a hardware need.

When to seek manufacturer or repair support

Contact the headphone manufacturer when the model will not enter pairing mode after a full charge, fails with multiple known-good sources, or remains unusable after the official reset procedure. Provide the exact model, operating-system versions, what the indicator does, and the results of the cross-test. For a PC, document whether Bluetooth appears in Device Manager, whether the adapter has an error, and whether another Bluetooth device connects.
