Bluetooth audio problems usually have a fix that does not involve replacing the headphones. Start by charging the headset, bringing it close to the source, testing downloaded audio, and removing and pairing the device again. Then isolate whether the trouble follows streaming, radio interference, a Windows, Apple, or Samsung setting, a codec such as LDAC, or one computer’s Bluetooth adapter.
Use the symptom and test results below to choose the shortest path. A dropout, delay, distortion, pairing failure, and connected-with-no-sound condition can share causes, but they are not the same fault. Official support guidance from Apple, Samsung, and Microsoft supports a reversible, test-first approach.

Identify the symptom before changing settings
Write down what happens and when it happens. A useful test changes one condition at a time, so you can tell whether the fault follows the audio source, the room, the operating system, or the headset.

Run this reversible baseline sequence
Complete these steps in order, stopping when the behavior changes. Each step removes a common variable without erasing more settings than necessary.
- Charge both sides. Charge the headphones or earbuds and, where applicable, the charging case. A low battery can prevent pairing mode or make a connection unstable. Microsoft specifically lists battery level as a check for Windows pairing and connection failures.
- Power-cycle the equipment. Turn the headphones off and on. Restart the phone, tablet, or computer. A restart clears a temporary Bluetooth service or audio-route state without changing your saved files.
- Bring the devices together. Place the source within a short, unobstructed distance of the headset. Keep the source and headset in the same room and avoid putting a phone in a bag or behind your body during the test.
- Verify pairing mode. Put the headset into its documented pairing mode rather than merely turning it on. If it is already connected to another phone or computer, disconnect that source or disable its Bluetooth temporarily.
- Select the headset for audio. A device can show as connected for calls or control while another output remains selected for media. Open the source’s sound controls and explicitly choose the Bluetooth headset.
- Play a known-good local file. Use a downloaded song or video for several minutes. Do not change the room, distance, or volume while testing.
- Repeat after moving locations. If the local file is stable, test in the original location and then in a quiet area. A change that follows the location is evidence for environmental or radio conditions rather than a definite headset failure.
Separate Bluetooth from streaming problems
Streaming adds a network path that local playback does not. Apple advises testing content stored on the device while keeping the source nearby; Samsung likewise recommends downloading music when online playback is unstable. A practical comparison is:
- Download one song, podcast episode, or video to the source.
- Turn off the app’s streaming activity or use the downloaded item in airplane mode with Bluetooth re-enabled, if the device permits that combination.
- Play the local file for at least several minutes at the same distance and volume used during the failure.
- Play the same or comparable content from a stream.
If local playback remains clear while streaming cuts out, investigate network congestion, the streaming app, and the listening location as well as Bluetooth range. This is an isolation test, not proof that the Bluetooth radio is fault-free: a marginal Bluetooth link can still fail under a different timing or data pattern.

Remove range and radio interference
Bluetooth performance can change when the path between source and headset is blocked or when nearby equipment is active. Apple lists walls and floors, crowded places, Wi-Fi activity, poorly shielded or bare cables, microwaves, and wireless speakers as possible contributors. Samsung and Sennheiser provide similar environmental checks.
Make a clean close-range test
- Place the source within arm’s reach of the headset.
- Keep the devices on the same side of your body and remove bags, drawers, and metal obstacles from between them.
- Test in a room without a microwave operating and away from wireless speakers, busy routers, and dense public Wi-Fi.
- Move away from exposed or poorly shielded cables and from crowded areas where many radios are active.
Then restore your normal position one variable at a time. If the audio fails only after you add distance, a wall, or a particular location, the environment is implicated. That does not establish a precise maximum range; walls, body position, antenna design, and local radio traffic all differ.

Microsoft’s instructions apply to both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Use the section that matches the symptom, and restart after driver or system changes.

When Bluetooth says connected but there is no sound
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under the output device, select the Bluetooth headset instead of the computer speakers, monitor, or another device.
- If sound is still absent or unstable, open the headset’s output properties and try the two-channel, 16-bit, 48 kHz format documented by Microsoft.
- Remove the headset from Bluetooth devices, add it again, and test a local file.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait about 10 seconds, turn it back on, and reconnect.
- Install the current Bluetooth driver supplied for the computer and check Windows Update. Restart Windows after updating.
For higher-quality stereo streaming, Microsoft also says to check that the Bluetooth device supports the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP). A device can remain connected for another profile while not delivering the expected media audio.

When Windows cannot pair or keeps losing the connection
- Confirm the headset is powered on, charged, visible, and actually in pairing mode.
- Keep it within short range of the PC and temporarily disconnect it from other sources.
- In Settings > Bluetooth & devices, remove the old entry, then choose Add device and pair again.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and back on, install pending Windows updates, and restart the computer.
- Update the PC’s Bluetooth driver. If the adapter is missing in Windows or driver checks consistently implicate it, note whether another Bluetooth headset works on the same PC and whether this headset works on another source.

Apple devices: re-pair after the playback and environment tests
Apple’s guidance, published April 2, 2026, starts with the same isolation checks: use stored audio, keep the iPhone, iPad, or other source close to the headphones, and move away from walls, floors, crowded places, heavy Wi-Fi activity, microwaves, wireless speakers, and poorly shielded cables.

LDAC stuttering: change the codec only when it fits the symptom
Codec changes are a targeted experiment, not a universal first fix. In its guidance updated August 17, 2026, Sennheiser Hearing addresses LDAC stuttering and disconnection by recommending that users avoid 2.4 GHz interference, turn off phone Bluetooth power-saving and audio-compression modes where those controls exist, and try AAC, SBC, or another codec supported by both devices.
- Confirm that the symptom is specifically LDAC stuttering or disconnection and that both the source and headset expose codec controls.
- Move away from routers and other busy 2.4 GHz equipment.
- Disable Bluetooth power-saving or audio-compression options on the phone if the manufacturer provides them.
- Manually select AAC, SBC, or another mutually supported codec.
- Retest the same local file at the same distance before judging the change.
Codec availability and menu locations differ by phone, operating system, and headset. A codec switch cannot compensate for an uncharged headset, a blocked radio path, a missing Windows driver, or an output device that is not selected. The vendor’s article is available at Troubleshooting LDAC stuttering, disconnection.
Decide whether the computer adapter is the likely fault
Use cross-device testing before buying hardware. If several Bluetooth headsets fail on one Windows computer while the same headsets work on a phone or another computer, the PC adapter, driver, or Windows installation becomes more plausible. If one headset fails everywhere, the headset, its battery, or its pairing state is more suspect. If only streaming fails, keep investigating the network and app path.
Recommended Free Tools
A USB Bluetooth adapter is therefore a conditional replacement or workaround when Windows cannot see its built-in adapter, the adapter’s driver remains problematic, or testing points specifically to that computer. It is not a general cure for every pair of stuttering headphones. Install the adapter’s current driver, disable conflicting unused Bluetooth hardware if the manufacturer instructs you to, pair the headset again, and repeat the local-file and close-range tests.
Use the test results to choose the next action
| Result | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Local audio is clear; streams fail | Check network conditions and the streaming app while keeping Bluetooth distance and interference controlled |
| Failure disappears at close range or in another room | Reduce obstructions and radio congestion in the normal listening location |
| Only one Windows PC has the problem | Verify output selection, A2DP support, format, driver, Windows updates, and the PC adapter |
| Several headsets fail on that PC | Prioritize the Bluetooth adapter and driver rather than replacing every headset |
| One headset fails on every source | Repeat charging, power-cycle, and re-pairing; persistent failure points more strongly to the headset or its battery |
| Changing from LDAC to a supported alternative stabilizes playback | Keep the stable codec in high-interference locations and verify that both devices support it |
What not to conclude too quickly
- A dropout alone does not prove the headphones are defective; range, obstructions, nearby radios, battery level, pairing state, operating-system settings, drivers, and streaming conditions can all contribute.
- A stable downloaded file does not prove Bluetooth is perfect. It only removes much of the streaming path for that comparison.
- A codec with a higher quality label does not guarantee lower delay or fewer dropouts on every device. The official guidance here provides no universal latency guarantee.
- A USB adapter is not automatically an upgrade. Use one after the computer’s adapter or driver has become the leading suspect.
Keep the final working configuration simple: a charged headset, a current source device, a correctly selected output, a short unobstructed path, and a codec supported by both ends when codec controls are relevant. If the failure remains after those checks and follows the headset across multiple sources, consult the headset maker’s service or warranty process rather than repeating the same software toggles.
