BD-Live needs an internet connection and may need player permission, an account, or storage. BONUSVIEW is usually on-disc picture-in-picture or secondary audio and is controlled from the disc’s playback menu. An ordinary menu extra may need neither. Once you know the feature type, check the matching setting before replacing hardware.
Identify the feature before troubleshooting
Blu-ray packaging often calls every extra a “bonus feature,” but the player handles different extras in different ways. Start the disc and read the feature description on the case, menu, or insert. Look for the terms below.

| Feature | What it does | Internet needed? | Possible storage need | Where to control it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BD-Live | Downloads or accesses publisher-provided online material linked to the disc | Yes; some content may also require an account | Some players use internal memory; others require compatible external storage | Player network/BD-Live settings and the disc’s own instructions |
| BONUSVIEW | On-disc secondary video, picture-in-picture commentary, or secondary audio | Normally no | Normally no separate card | Secondary-video or secondary-audio controls during playback |
| Ordinary disc extra | Menus, trailers, deleted scenes, commentaries, or other files already on the disc | No, unless the disc explicitly identifies an online component | No special storage | The disc’s main menu or extras menu |
Panasonic describes BD-Live as internet-based bonus content and BONUSVIEW as functions such as picture-in-picture and secondary audio. Those definitions matter: adding an SD card will not repair a network permission problem, and changing a secondary-audio setting will not make an offline BD-Live service connect.

Use this troubleshooting order
- Read the disc instructions. Note the exact name of the failed item and whether it says BD-Live, online, picture-in-picture, secondary audio, or another term.
- Match the feature to the table above. Do not assume that every special feature needs internet access.
- Apply the feature-specific checks. For BD-Live, check the network, permission, account instructions, and—only where the model calls for it—storage. For BONUSVIEW, use the secondary video or audio controls while the movie is playing.
- Test the disc itself. Try another Blu-ray with a similar feature, or try the same disc in another compatible player if available.
- Rule out player-wide problems. Check region and format compatibility, restart the player, review parental controls and output settings, and inspect the disc for damage or dirt.
- Check firmware for the exact model. Use the manufacturer’s support page and follow that model’s update procedure; menu names and supported versions differ.
This order separates a failed online service from a disc-reading problem and prevents you from changing unrelated settings first.

Fix BD-Live features that will not load
1. Confirm that the player is actually online
Open the player’s network menu and run its connection test, if one is provided. A player can show a connected Ethernet or Wi-Fi link while still failing internet access, DNS resolution, or the publisher’s service. Confirm that the test reports internet access, not merely a local network connection.
If the player has recently moved networks, re-enter the Wi-Fi password or reconnect the Ethernet cable. Restart the network equipment and the player, then insert the disc again. BD-Live content is retrieved while the disc is running, so a connection established only after the title was launched may require you to exit to the main menu and start the feature again.
2. Allow BD-Live network access
Some players include a separate BD-Live permission even when ordinary network services work. LG’s Blu-ray settings documentation describes options that allow BD-Live access, partially allow it, or block it. Open the network or BD-Live section in your player’s settings and choose the least restrictive option that matches your security requirements.
The exact label is model-specific. It may appear as BD-Live Internet Access, BD Internet Connection, or a similarly named setting. If you cannot find it, search the manual for “BD-Live” rather than relying on a menu path from another model.
3. Follow account or title-specific instructions
Panasonic notes that some BD-Live material may require an account. Read the disc’s on-screen instructions and case insert for registration steps, activation codes, or publisher terms. A player can be correctly connected and permitted to access BD-Live while a particular feature remains unavailable because the required account has not been created.
Availability can also depend on the title and publisher. If one disc’s BD-Live item fails but other online functions work, do not assume the player is defective; continue with the single-title tests later in this guide.

4. Check storage only when your model uses it
BD-Live implementations differ. Some players use internal memory; some use an external card or other designated storage. Panasonic’s DMP-BD80 manual describes an SD card for BD-Live data and warns when the card lacks enough free space. Sony likewise documents a distinction between internal and external memory on some models.
Do not insert an SD card as a general-purpose fix. First check the exact player manual for the supported card type, capacity, formatting requirements, and insertion slot. If the manual says the player uses a card, remove unnecessary BD-Live data or provide a compatible card with sufficient free space. A card that works in a camera is not automatically supported by a Blu-ray player.
5. Clear conflicting BD-Live data when the model supports it
Sony’s disc-playback troubleshooting includes a model-specific option that is easy to miss: on an affected BD-Live disc, allowing BD internet access may not solve the problem. The documented alternative is to switch BD internet access off and delete stored BD-Live data, then try the disc again. Treat this as a targeted troubleshooting branch, not a universal default.
Deleting stored data can remove downloaded material or saved information for other discs. Read the warning on screen and record any account details you may need before clearing it. If your player has no BD-Live data-management option, do not substitute a random factory reset; use the model’s manual or support instructions.
Get BONUSVIEW picture-in-picture and secondary audio working
1. Start the main feature first
BONUSVIEW controls usually become available only after the movie or primary program is playing. Start the main title, then press the remote’s disc playback or pop-up menu button. Look for entries such as Secondary Video, Picture-in-Picture, Secondary Audio, or an icon showing two video windows.

Panasonic’s manual gives an example of selecting secondary video from the playback menu. Your player may use a different button, and some discs place the control in the title’s own menu. Follow the disc’s on-screen directions when they conflict with a generic remote-control guide.

2. Enable the correct stream
Choose the secondary video stream to display the commentary window or other picture-in-picture material. If the feature includes commentary, trivia, or an alternate soundtrack, enable secondary audio separately. Selecting secondary video alone may leave the extra window silent; selecting secondary audio alone may produce commentary without a visible picture.
Return the setting to Off if the main program becomes silent or the picture changes unexpectedly. Some discs mix the secondary track with the primary soundtrack only when the player’s secondary-audio option is enabled.
3. Do not treat BONUSVIEW as BD-Live
BONUSVIEW content is generally stored on the disc, so an internet connection and online account are not normally required. Conversely, adding storage or changing BD-Live permissions will not reveal a secondary-video option that is hidden because the wrong menu is open, the title does not include that stream, or the player does not support the relevant profile.
An older manual can explain the concept without describing every modern model. Panasonic’s DMP-BD80 manual is circa 2009 and its button names and capabilities are model-specific; use it as an example of the feature, not as a universal procedure.
When the extra is an ordinary disc menu item
Trailers, deleted scenes, still galleries, and commentaries that are already listed in the disc’s extras menu usually do not use BD-Live or BONUSVIEW. If one of these items will not start:
- Return to the disc’s top menu and launch the item again rather than using a resume point.
- Check whether the disc asks you to choose a language, subtitle, or playback format before starting.
- Try the item after disabling parental restrictions temporarily, if you know the current parental-control code.
- Check the player’s output resolution if the menu appears blank or the screen reports an unsupported signal.
- Test another item on the same disc. If every extra fails, suspect compatibility, disc damage, or a player problem rather than one corrupt menu entry.
Rule out compatibility, region, and general playback faults
Disc format and region
Verify that the player supports the disc format and region marking. Panasonic identifies region incompatibility as a possible reason a DVD or Blu-ray will not play. A disc that loads its opening screen but refuses a particular title or menu can still be affected by a format or region mismatch.

Do not infer compatibility from the fact that another disc works. Compare the failed title’s region code, BD-ROM format, and any 3D or special-profile requirement with the specifications for your exact player.
Try a controlled comparison
Use one comparable disc that you know contains working extras. The results narrow the cause:
| Result | Most useful interpretation |
|---|---|
| Several discs fail in the same way | Investigate the player’s network permission, firmware, output, parental controls, or hardware. |
| Only one title fails, while other discs work | Investigate that title’s region, publisher service, stored data, account requirement, or disc condition. |
| The same title works in another compatible player | The original player’s settings, firmware, storage, or compatibility are the leading suspects. |
| The title fails in multiple compatible players | Contact the disc publisher or manufacturer; a title-specific or disc-specific fault is more likely. |
Inspect the disc and restart the player
Hold the disc by its edge, inspect the data side under a light, and remove fingerprints with a soft, lint-free cloth using straight strokes from the center outward. Do not use abrasive materials or circular scrubbing. Reinsert the disc and perform a full power cycle: stop playback, turn the player off, unplug it briefly, reconnect it, and try the title again.
Review parental controls and output settings
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance includes parental-control and output checks. A restricted feature may require the player’s parental-control code, while a menu or bonus video may fail to display if the connected television or receiver cannot accept the selected resolution. Temporarily choose a standard supported output listed in the player and television manuals, then test the feature again.
Change only one setting at a time and note the original value. That makes it possible to restore a working configuration if the output change does not help.
Check firmware for the exact player model
Firmware updates can improve playback compatibility and correct bugs in network or disc handling. Sony advises keeping system software current for compatibility, and LG provides a menu option to check for a firmware update. The procedure, supported file format, and latest version vary by model and country.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Find the complete model number on the player’s front panel, rear label, or system-information screen.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model and region.
- Read the update notes for network, BD-Live, disc, or playback fixes.
- Use the documented network or USB update method; do not install firmware intended for a similar-looking model.
- Leave the player powered and connected until the update reports completion.
If the player cannot access the update server, use the manufacturer’s official offline procedure only when the model supports it. A failed or interrupted update can create a larger fault than the original bonus-feature problem.
Symptom-to-action checklist
| What you see | Next action |
|---|---|
| “Connect to the internet” or a blank BD-Live page | Run the player’s network test, allow BD-Live access, and follow any account instructions. |
| BD-Live starts but reports insufficient space | Check whether the exact model uses internal memory or a compatible external card; free space as directed by its manual. |
| Picture-in-picture option is missing | Start the main title, open the playback/pop-up menu, and confirm that the disc actually includes secondary video. |
| Commentary is available but silent | Enable secondary audio as well as the secondary-video stream, if the disc requires both. |
| Only one disc’s extras fail | Check region and format, inspect the disc, test it in another player, and consider a title-specific service or account issue. |
| Every disc or menu behaves abnormally | Power-cycle the player, review parental and output settings, and check model-specific firmware. |
When to contact the publisher or player manufacturer
Escalate after you have identified the feature, tested the relevant settings, and compared another disc or player where possible. Contact the disc publisher for a title-specific BD-Live account or service problem. Contact the player manufacturer when multiple discs fail, the network test fails despite a working connection, the player cannot retain settings, or firmware installation produces an error.
Provide useful diagnostic details:
- Exact disc title, edition, and region marking
- Exact player model and country or region
- The named feature: BD-Live, BONUSVIEW, secondary audio/video, or menu extra
- The on-screen error message and the step where it appears
- Whether another disc works and whether the title works in another player
- Network connection type, if BD-Live is involved
- Firmware version and any storage device type and capacity used
This information helps support distinguish a title service issue from a player configuration or compatibility problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat accessory, if any, is relevant?
The only physical accessory supported by the documented guidance is a compatible SD card for BD-Live storage, and only when the exact player/disc combination requires external storage. Confirm the model’s card type, capacity limit, and formatting instructions before buying one. An SD card is not a general fix for BONUSVIEW, ordinary menu extras, network permissions, region mismatches, or damaged discs.
Bottom line
Start by naming the failed feature. For BD-Live, restore internet access, permit BD-Live traffic, complete any account step, and check model-specific storage or stored-data controls. For BONUSVIEW, play the main title and enable secondary video or audio from the disc/player playback menu. For ordinary extras, focus on disc compatibility, region, parental controls, output, disc condition, and firmware. If only one title still fails after those checks, the remaining cause may be specific to that disc or publisher service rather than a universal player fault.
