If a website’s WebGL canvas appears blank in a screenshot, the drawing buffer may have been cleared after the browser displayed it. If you control the page, request preserveDrawingBuffer: true when the WebGL context is first created, then check performance on target devices. If you control the renderer, synchronous capture during rendering is another option. For an OffscreenCanvas that uses transferToImageBitmap(), preservation does not prevent the transfer from leaving a blank bitmap.
Why is my WebGL canvas screenshot blank?
WebGL drawing buffers are not preserved by default. The Khronos WebGL Specification says that after the browser composites the drawing buffer, it is cleared to its default values unless preservation was requested. A later read or export can therefore get no rendered pixels, even though the 3D content appeared on screen.

With preservation disabled, using the WebGL context as an image source after rendering returns has undefined behavior. The specification names readPixels, toDataURL, drawImage, and ImageBitmap creation among the affected operations. This is a buffer-lifecycle issue, not necessarily a failure to render the scene.
How do I check that the screenshot is capturing the WebGL canvas?
Before changing WebGL code, verify that the visible 3D content really comes from a WebGL canvas and that the capture targets it. Another layer, an overlay, or an iframe can make it appear that the canvas itself is blank. This is a diagnostic check, not a guarantee about any particular browser automation tool.

How do I fix the drawing buffer when I control the page?
Request preservation when creating the context
Find the first call that creates the WebGL context and include preserveDrawingBuffer: true in its options. For example:

Check the performance trade-off
Preservation can make later reads or exports possible, but it is not free on every platform. Khronos warns that it “can cause significant performance loss on some platforms.” Test the result and rendering performance on the devices you support before keeping the setting enabled.
Can I capture the canvas without preserving the drawing buffer?
If you own the rendering code and want to avoid keeping the buffer around, perform the read or export synchronously as part of the render operation, before returning from that function. The WebGL specification describes synchronous readPixels or toDataURL in the rendering function as an alternative; WebGL Fundamentals’ WebGL Tips also demonstrates canvas export with toBlob.

The important distinction is timing: a later screenshot or export may run after compositing has cleared an unpreserved buffer. A capture performed within the rendering path can read the pixels before that later stage. An application-owned framebuffer and readback workflow is another approach when the renderer needs more control over when pixels are retained and exported.
What changes with OffscreenCanvas and transferToImageBitmap()?
Check whether the rendering code calls transferToImageBitmap(). The method transfers the current bitmap and replaces it with a new blank bitmap. The WHATWG HTML Standard explicitly says that when an OffscreenCanvas rendering context is WebGL, preserveDrawingBuffer has no effect on this transfer. If the screenshot is taken from the canvas after the transfer, the blank bitmap is expected; adjust when or what your application captures rather than relying on preservation to change the transfer behavior.

What if I do not control the website?
You cannot change the site’s WebGL context-creation options. Try capturing through the screenshot tool’s supported browser capture path after the page has completed the desired draw. Browser automation behavior, flags, and timing vary by tool and version; there is no universal setting established here that fixes every WebGL screenshot.

WebGL screenshot troubleshooting checklist
- The screenshot is blank but the page shows the scene: confirm the capture targets the WebGL canvas and is not obscured by another layer, iframe, or overlay.
- You control context creation: set
preserveDrawingBuffer: trueon the initialwebglorwebgl2context call. Changing the options afterward does not alter the existing context. - Performance drops after enabling preservation: test on the devices that matter, since Khronos warns of significant performance loss on some platforms. If that cost is unacceptable, consider a synchronous read or export during rendering.
- The page uses OffscreenCanvas: look for
transferToImageBitmap(). The call leaves a blank replacement bitmap, and preservation does not change that behavior. - You do not control the site: try the screenshot tool’s supported capture path after the desired draw, but treat timing and automation behavior as tool- and version-specific.
