Start with Steam’s file check, then repair the software layers that old games expect: Windows and graphics drivers, legacy runtimes, display settings, and audio devices. If you use Linux or a Steam Deck, test the game with a different Proton compatibility tool. Work through one change at a time so you know which fix helped and can undo changes that did not.
Identify the failure before changing anything
“Won’t run” describes several different faults. A black or blank display usually points to an incompatible video mode, damaged shader data, a driver profile, or a game that starts on the wrong GPU. A crash immediately after “Preparing to Launch” is more often a missing runtime, blocked executable, corrupt download, overlay conflict, or compatibility problem. Sound that disappears while the picture works requires a separate audio investigation.

Write down the exact symptom, when it occurs, and whether the same build worked before. That record prevents a graphics change from being mistaken for an audio fix and gives support staff reproducible information.
Confirm the platform and the game’s original assumptions
Open the game’s Steam store page and read its operating-system and hardware requirements. A title built for an older version of Windows may depend on graphics APIs, audio components, screen resolutions, or processor behavior that a current system no longer provides exactly. Meeting today’s hardware requirements does not guarantee that those legacy assumptions are compatible.

Windows desktop and laptop
On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, the game can launch on the lower-power adapter while the monitor or driver expects the high-performance GPU. In Windows graphics settings, add the game executable and choose the high-performance GPU, then restart the game. Vendor control-panel profiles can also override the operating-system choice; reset an unusual per-game profile before testing again.
Linux and Steam Deck
Steam Play can run some Windows-only games, but support is title-specific. In the game’s Properties, use the Compatibility section to select a different installed Steam Play/Proton tool, or let Steam choose one if that is the title’s documented path. Check current title-specific compatibility reports for known launch arguments, cut-scene issues, controller problems, or audio limitations. A fix for one Proton version is not evidence that every version will work.
Repair the Steam installation first
Verify downloaded files
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game, choose Properties, and open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch the game without changing anything else.
Steam compares local checksums with its server manifest and reacquires files that are missing or corrupted. A few local configuration files can legitimately fail verification, so a report of a small number of files being reacquired is not automatically a new failure. Verification repairs the download; it does not supply a missing Windows runtime, correct an incompatible display mode, or make a title compatible with every Proton build.

Close the game and Steam completely, restart the computer, and run the check again. If the same files are reacquired on every launch, a security program may be quarantining them, the drive may have an error, or a cloud-synchronization process may be replacing the files. Check the security program’s quarantine and exclusions for the game’s folder, and test the drive only after protecting save files.

Update Windows and the graphics foundation
Install current system and GPU updates
Apply pending Windows updates, then install the current driver for the installed graphics adapter. Reboot after each update so the new driver and runtime services are actually loaded. If a normal driver update leaves the same crash or black screen, use the vendor installer’s clean-install option where available. A clean installation removes old DLLs and per-game profiles that can conflict with a classic title.
Check the display path
- Disconnect a second monitor or unusual adapter temporarily.
- Try a different cable or input if the monitor reports no signal outside the game.
- Set the desktop to a standard resolution and refresh rate before launching an old title.
- Disable a forced HDR, stereoscopic, or custom scaling mode for the test.
- On a dual-GPU laptop, confirm that the game is assigned to the high-performance GPU.
These tests separate a game-rendering failure from a monitor, cable, or adapter failure. Restore your normal multi-monitor and display settings after identifying the cause.
Install the legacy components classic games expect
Many older games do not bundle every shared component they need. Valve’s Steam common-redistributable documentation notes that “Many games and applications require shared components to be installed on the user’s machine before they can successfully run.” Depending on the title, the required package may be different from the one used by a modern game.
Common prerequisites
- Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables, including the architecture required by the game.
- .NET Framework components used by launchers, configuration tools, or copy-protection-era utilities.
- DirectX 9-era components, even when a newer DirectX version is installed.
- OpenAL for games that use that audio API.
- XNA Framework for titles built with Microsoft XNA.
- PhysX for games that use the legacy PhysX runtime.
Look in the game’s installation folder for a bundled _CommonRedist directory or an installer supplied by the publisher, and run only the package the title requires. Installing a newer, unrelated runtime does not replace an older component automatically. Restart Windows after a runtime repair and test before adding launch options.

Remove software interference without making permanent changes
Close overlays and resource-heavy applications for one controlled launch. Disable the Steam Overlay for the game, and temporarily close recording tools, performance monitors, chat overlays, RGB utilities, and browser windows that consume substantial GPU memory. Re-enable them one by one after the game is stable.
Security software and permissions
Check the security product’s quarantine and event history if the executable disappears, launches and immediately closes, or reports an access error. Add a narrowly scoped exclusion for the game executable or installation folder only when you trust the files and understand the security trade-off. Do not disable protection indefinitely.
Running Steam or the game as administrator can reveal a permissions problem, but treat it as a diagnostic test rather than a permanent fix. If elevation changes the result, inspect folder permissions, controlled-folder-access events, and the game’s attempt to write its configuration or save directory.

Try a reversible display mode
- Start the game and wait through its normal launch period once; some old titles take longer while creating configuration files.
- If the display is black, press
Alt+Enterto switch between fullscreen and windowed mode. - If that works, use the game’s video menu to choose a standard resolution and refresh rate, apply it, and restart.
- If the game never reaches a menu, use Steam’s launch-options field to force a documented windowed or safe-video mode for that title.
Fullscreen settings saved by an old monitor can produce a black window even when rendering is functioning. Once a safe mode works, remove the temporary option and set the desired mode inside the game.

Clear a damaged shader cache
Some games or drivers keep compiled shaders that become invalid after a driver update or a graphics-setting change. Exit Steam and the game, then use the game’s documented cache-reset procedure or remove only the title-specific shader-cache data. Do not delete saves or the entire Steam library. Steam or the game will rebuild the cache on the next launch, which can take longer than usual.
Reset driver profiles
Restore the graphics driver’s per-game profile to its defaults. Forced anti-aliasing, frame caps, compatibility overrides, or color modes created for another game can prevent a classic renderer from displaying correctly. Test at default settings before adding a single desired adjustment.

Steam launch options are useful when a title’s saved video configuration prevents it from reaching its menu. Open the game’s Properties, stay on the General tab, and enter one option in Launch Options. Change one item at a time and record the result.

- Back up or note the existing launch options.
- Try the game’s documented auto-configuration option, such as
-autoconfigfor supported Valve/Source titles. - If the title supports multiple DirectX levels, test the compatible level documented for that game, rather than guessing from its release year.
- Try a windowed option when fullscreen is blank, then set the final mode in the game menu.
- Remove every temporary option after identifying the setting that works.
Options are engine-specific. A command accepted by one Source game may be ignored or harmful in another engine. If an option causes a new crash, delete it from the same field and verify the game’s files again.
Restore audio when the game runs silently
Check per-app volume and the selected output
- Launch the game and leave it running.
- Open the Windows Volume Mixer and confirm that the game is not muted and its slider is raised.
- In Windows sound settings, select the speakers, headset, HDMI display, or other device you actually want to hear.
- Test that device with another application, then return to the game.
Windows can remember a separate output and volume level for each executable. A game can therefore be audible in its own mixer channel while the physical speakers remain silent because audio is being sent to a disconnected monitor or headset.
Test speaker, headset, USB, and surround configurations
Temporarily disconnect USB audio devices and test the motherboard audio or a directly connected headset. Steam’s sound troubleshooting guidance identifies USB devices, onboard sound, drivers, and surround setup as possible sources of interference. In the device properties, test stereo output before selecting 5.1 or 7.1. Some classic games output only a stereo signal or fail when a surround endpoint advertises a format they do not understand.
Install the current driver for the selected audio device, reboot, and test again. If sound returns only after changing the default device, keep the game’s output device fixed while troubleshooting other applications.
Separate an audio failure from a game failure
- If the game’s menus and video work but Windows’ mixer shows activity on the wrong device, fix the output selection.
- If no mixer activity appears, check the game’s master-volume and music/effects sliders, then repair its files.
- If only one scene or video is silent, the title may use a missing legacy codec or a damaged media file; consult the publisher’s title-specific support notes.
- If every application is silent, stop troubleshooting the game and repair the Windows audio device or driver first.
Use a disciplined Linux and Steam Deck path
- Confirm on the Steam store page whether the title has native Linux support or is intended to use Steam Play.
- In the game’s Properties, open Compatibility and enable the title-specific Steam Play/Proton tool recommended by current compatibility reports.
- If the current tool fails, test another installed Proton version, changing only that variable.
- Launch once after each change and record whether the failure is a black screen, crash, controller issue, or missing audio.
- Remove custom launch options that were copied from a different title before asking for help.
Proton can change the effective graphics and audio path, so a Windows fix may not apply on a Deck. Conversely, a title may work with one Proton build and fail after an update. Keep the working tool selected until a newer version is confirmed for that game.
Escalate with evidence when the checklist fails
Contact the publisher or Steam support with a reproducible report instead of “it crashes.” Capcom’s troubleshooting guidance, updated July 22, 2026, explains that games can fail under particular environment and hardware combinations and asks for details that speed investigation.
Include this diagnostic bundle
- Exact game name, edition, installed build, and the date the problem began.
- Windows, Linux distribution, or SteamOS version.
- CPU, GPU, installed VRAM, system RAM, and whether the computer has dual GPUs.
- Graphics and audio driver versions.
- Monitor model, resolution, refresh rate, connection type, and any adapter or dock.
- Security software and overlays running during the failed launch.
- The exact reproduction steps, including whether verification completed successfully.
- A copy of
DxDiag.txton Windows, the game’s configuration files, and anyCrashReportfiles the title creates. - Screenshots or a short video showing the black screen, error message, or audio setting.
Do not email passwords, license keys, or unrelated personal files. Preserve saves before reinstalling, deleting configuration folders, or switching compatibility tools.
