Black screens between product demo clips in OBS usually mean the media source has ended or gone inactive while no other visible source is covering the scene. Check the clip’s end behavior, source visibility and restart settings, and whether OBS unloads the file when it is inactive. Then rehearse the complete sequence before going live.
Find where the black screen appears
First determine whether the gap is visible in OBS’s own output preview/program view or only in YouTube playback. If it is already black in OBS, troubleshoot the media source, source visibility, scene contents and transitions. If OBS shows the intended picture but YouTube does not, this symptom alone does not identify the cause: the available OBS documentation does not establish a YouTube ingest or player-side explanation.

“Show nothing when playback ends”
In the clip’s Media Source properties, check Show nothing when playback ends. OBS documents this option as On by default; when enabled, it hides the source after the file completes. If nothing else is visible beneath it, the scene can appear empty or black. Decide what should appear after the clip: a holding image, the next demo, a presenter camera, or a deliberate transition.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Source visibility and restart behavior
Check the source’s eye icon in the Sources list and confirm it is visible when the clip should play. OBS says Restart playback when source becomes active restarts the file when the source is in the current scene and visible; its documented default is On. Leave restart enabled if each entry should begin at the start. If a clip should continue from its current position instead, use a setting consistent with that intent and test it. Source order also matters: an item above another can cover it. The OBS Studio Overview Guide explains source visibility and ordering.
“Close file when inactive”
Check whether Close file when inactive is enabled. OBS documents that it unloads a hidden or off-scene media file to free memory. When the source becomes active again, OBS warns there may be a short period when it is not showing while the file reloads. If the black interval happens as a scene returns, compare a rehearsal with this option off.

Choose a playback setup that fits the show
| Setup | Best fit | Verify | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate Media Sources, optionally arranged in scenes | Demos need distinct overlays, layouts or operator-controlled transitions | Restart-on-activation, show-nothing-at-end, close-file-when-inactive and source visibility | More control per clip, but more sources and scene setup |
| VLC Video playlist | A straightforward ordered sequence of local clips | Playlist order, loop, shuffle and visibility behavior; VLC installation and matching architecture | Centralizes the playlist, with less per-clip scene and layout control |
OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and controls such as looping and shuffling. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Choose separate sources when individual clips need their own layouts or manual transitions, and a playlist when the sequence is simple. These options are documented in OBS Media Sources.

OBS includes Cut and Fade transitions and supports other transition types. In Studio Mode, you can prepare a scene before transitioning it to the live scene. Choose a transition and duration that suit the show, then inspect the actual output: a transition can make a gap less abrupt, but it does not correct a source that fails to play or a scene with nothing visible.

- Open the scene collection and check that each clip, background and overlay is in the intended scene and source order.
- Review each Media Source’s end, restart and inactive-file settings; confirm visibility where playback should begin.
- Set the intended scene transition, then rehearse the exact clip order, scene changes and ending.
- Watch OBS’s output through every clip boundary. Note whether black appears at the end of a file, when a source becomes active, or when a scene returns.
- Run a controlled test before the live show. OBS recommends testing scenes, settings and stream smoothness before a first live stream; see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
If a clip does not restart after a fast hide/show
A GitHub report filed July 29, 2024 described a media source that did not reliably restart when hidden and shown immediately after playback ended, in OBS 30.2.0 on Windows 11. The reporter said waiting at least one second avoided that reproduction. This is a version- and setup-specific report, not a universal timing rule or confirmation that the issue applies to current OBS releases. If your sequence toggles a source immediately at a clip boundary, test that exact sequence; a brief delay is a diagnostic to try, not a guaranteed fix. See OBS issue #11040.
