How to Fix Black Bars, Keyboard Overlap, and Split-Screen Problems on Foldables and Unusual Aspect Ratios

Black bars, cropped split-screen windows, and a keyboard that hides the text field usually come from Android running an app in a compatibility window—not from a damaged display. Start with the app’s per-app aspect-ratio setting, then force a fresh window-state change by rotating, folding, or leaving and re-entering split-screen. If the problem remains, test the divider position and keyboard behavior separately. The exact menu names depend on the phone maker, Android release, app, and keyboard.

Why unusual aspect ratios cause these problems

Most Android apps are built around assumptions made for conventional phone displays. A foldable, tablet-sized inner screen, cover display, or tall-and-narrow phone can have a very different width, height, and aspect ratio. Android Developers describes the resulting black-bar behavior as letterboxing: the system preserves the shape an app expects instead of stretching it across a window it was not designed to handle.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Three app restrictions are the main triggers:

  • Fixed orientation: the app insists on portrait or landscape even when the device is held differently.
  • Fixed aspect ratio: the app declares a preferred shape and does not adapt to the available window.
  • Non-resizable activity: the app does not support being resized for split-screen or other multi-window layouts.

Android can place such an app in size compatibility mode. The app receives a window with the dimensions it expects, while the rest of the display is filled with bars or unused space. Rotation, folding or unfolding, and switching between full-screen and split-screen are configuration changes that can activate or refresh this mode.

That distinction matters when troubleshooting. A black strip that appears only around one older app is usually a compatibility decision. A black strip visible in the launcher, every app, and the recovery screen points to a broader display or software problem and needs a different diagnosis.

Identify the exact symptom before changing settings

What you see Most likely explanation First test
Black bars around one app on the inner foldable display The app has fixed orientation, fixed aspect ratio, or is non-resizable Open that app’s per-app display or aspect-ratio setting
The app fills the screen until you rotate or unfold the phone A configuration change triggered size compatibility handling Leave the app, change the window state once more, and relaunch it
Split-screen is cropped after rotation The app or system has not redrawn for the new window dimensions Move the divider, exit split-screen, then enter it again
The keyboard covers a button or text field only in split-screen The available window became too short for the app’s layout or IME behavior Test another divider position and orientation before changing keyboard settings
Every app has incorrect scaling or persistent bars A system display, density, or launcher issue rather than one app’s compatibility mode Check another app and the home screen, then restart the phone

Also note whether the keyboard is the phone’s built-in input method or a third-party keyboard. Android’s window-inset behavior can be exposed differently by each keyboard, so a menu path that exists on one device may not exist on another.

1. Change the app’s per-app aspect-ratio setting

On supported large-screen devices, Android 14 QPR1 introduced a user-facing configuration menu for changing how an individual app uses the display. Manufacturers can expose the control under different names, but the choices commonly describe Full screen, App default, and a Compatibility or similarly named mode.

Because phone makers place this control in different locations, use the Settings search field for terms such as aspect ratio, full screen apps, app display, or screen compatibility. A typical path is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open the display, apps, or special-app-access area supplied by your manufacturer.
  3. Select the affected app from the list of installed apps.
  4. Open its display, aspect-ratio, or full-screen control.
  5. Try Full screen first if you want the app to use the entire panel.
  6. If the layout becomes stretched, clipped, or unusable, return to App default or Compatibility.
  7. Close the app completely and launch it again.

These options are overrides, not a guarantee that the app has become adaptive. A full-screen override can reveal controls that were previously outside the app’s expected bounds, and an app with hard-coded portrait measurements may still look wrong. The safest choice is the one that keeps text, buttons, and touch targets usable.

Availability varies by device and Android build. Not seeing an aspect-ratio menu does not mean you missed a step; the manufacturer may not expose the control, the phone may not meet the large-screen conditions for it, or the app may already be treated as resizable.

2. Use letterbox positioning and redraw controls

Some Android builds provide controls for where a letterboxed app sits on the display or for restarting its layout. Android 13 added user education around positioning a letterboxed app and including it in split-screen. If you see a letterbox handle, position selector, Restart, Redraw, or similar action, apply it and then relaunch the app.

  • Use positioning controls when a bar or hinge area blocks an important part of the app.
  • Use a restart or redraw action when the app still shows its old dimensions after a rotation or fold.
  • After applying the control, remove the app from Recents if the old layout remains cached, then open it again.

These controls change the window arrangement; they do not rewrite the app’s layout. If the app refuses to resize, compatibility bars may remain even after repositioning.

3. Force a clean window-state change

When an app is stuck with the wrong dimensions, deliberately trigger a configuration change. Android documents rotation, folding or unfolding, and transitions between full-screen and split-screen as events that can invoke size-compatibility handling.

  1. Save any work in the app.
  2. Rotate the phone once, wait for the interface to settle, and rotate back.
  3. On a foldable, close and reopen the device, or move the app from the cover display to the inner display.
  4. Enter split-screen, move the divider slightly, and then return to full-screen.
  5. Open the app again and check whether the bars, crop, or keyboard position changed.

If the app is still rendering the old size, swipe it away from Recents and relaunch it after the transition. Do not repeatedly rotate while an app is saving data; some older apps do not handle rapid configuration changes safely.

4. Repair split-screen cropping

Split-screen gives each activity a smaller and often differently shaped window. An app that looks correct full-screen can be cropped when the divider reduces its width or height, particularly if it is non-resizable.

When the crop appears immediately

Move the divider toward the center and then back toward the position you want. This forces the system to send a new size to both activities. If the app remains cropped, leave split-screen, open the app by itself, and try the per-app aspect-ratio choice before entering split-screen again.

When the crop appears only after rotation

Exit split-screen before rotating whenever possible. After rotation, reopen the two apps in split-screen and adjust the divider once. The sequence gives each app a clean window measurement instead of asking it to transform an already constrained layout.

When one app refuses to share the screen

A non-resizable activity may be excluded from split-screen or placed in a compatibility window. Android’s user guidance can offer a way to position a letterboxed app or include it in split-screen, but the control is device-dependent. If no such option appears, the app itself may not support multi-window operation.

5. Stop the keyboard from covering fields and controls

A keyboard overlap is usually a window-size problem first. In split-screen, opening the keyboard removes part of an already short window. If the app does not correctly respond to the reduced area or keyboard insets, the IME can cover the focused field, buttons, or the submit control.

Use layout changes before keyboard menus

  1. Tap the affected field and note whether the app scrolls it into view.
  2. Move the split-screen divider to give the app more vertical space.
  3. Rotate the phone and test the same field in the other orientation.
  4. Close and reopen split-screen, then focus the field again.
  5. Repeat with the keyboard hidden and shown to determine whether the app redraws correctly.

If the field is visible after these changes, the issue is tied to the available window configuration rather than a permanently misplaced keyboard.

Check the input method without assuming a universal path

Keyboard menus differ between manufacturers and keyboard apps. Look for options described as floating mode, one-handed mode, keyboard height, or navigation-bar behavior only after testing the window itself. A floating or unusually tall keyboard can reduce the usable area further, while a compact mode may expose more of the app. The exact setting and menu path must be taken from the specific phone and keyboard combination; Android does not provide one universal keyboard menu that applies everywhere.

If one keyboard works and another does not, record which input method was active when the overlap occurred. That comparison separates an app’s window-inset bug from an IME-specific layout problem.

6. Understand Android version behavior

Android 13

Android 13 added user education and controls around letterboxed-app positioning and using such apps in split-screen. The controls may be surfaced through system prompts or manufacturer-specific menus rather than one identical Settings page.

Android 14 QPR1

Android 14 QPR1 introduced a configuration menu that lets users change an app’s aspect ratio on supported large-screen devices. This is the most useful first-line override when an app is letterboxed, but support depends on the device build and the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android 16

Android 16 changes compatibility behavior on devices whose smallest-width resource is at least 600dp. On those large-screen devices, the system ignores orientation, aspect-ratio, and resizability restrictions in the documented cases, with limitations for apps targeting API level 36. That can make some previously letterboxed apps fill more of the display, but it can also expose layout bugs in apps that were never designed for a broad window.

Platform and manufacturer controls

AOSP exposes device-level configuration for the maximum aspect ratio used when letterboxing fixed-orientation apps and for whether split-screen aspect ratio is the default for non-resizable apps. Those are platform or OEM decisions, not normal user settings. Changing them generally requires a managed build, engineering access, or manufacturer support; they are not a practical fix for an individual phone owner.

7. Use ADB overrides only as diagnostic tests

Android documents temporary, package-specific compatibility overrides that can change how an app uses available split-screen space and can suppress letterboxing for testing. These overrides are intended for development and troubleshooting, not as a guaranteed consumer fix.

  • They apply to a specific package, so selecting the wrong package has no effect on the app you meant to test.
  • They may reset after a reboot, app update, or removal of the override.
  • They can expose clipped controls, incorrect touch coordinates, or unusable text because the app still has a fixed layout.
  • They do not replace an app update that adds proper adaptive, resizable-window support.

Use the exact command syntax and package name from the Android Developers compatibility-override documentation for your Android release. Avoid copying a command intended for another release or device image, and return the app to its default compatibility behavior if the override makes the layout worse.

8. Decide whether the app or the phone is at fault

Use this checklist after trying the safe settings:

  • Only one app is affected: inspect its aspect-ratio setting and check whether it supports resizing.
  • Several older apps show bars on the same display: the panel’s unusual aspect ratio is exposing common compatibility limits.
  • The issue follows the fold or rotation: perform a clean window-state transition and relaunch.
  • The issue occurs only with one keyboard: compare the system input method with the alternate keyboard and note its mode or height.
  • The issue affects the launcher and every app: restart the phone and review system display settings rather than changing one app’s compatibility mode.
  • The app is essential and still unusable: contact its developer with the phone model, Android version, display state, orientation, split-screen divider position, and whether the keyboard was visible.

Whether an app is resizable, whether the device exposes per-app controls, whether the failure starts after a configuration change, which IME is active, and which API level the app targets are the most useful facts to record. They let support reproduce the actual window conditions instead of treating “black bars” or “keyboard overlap” as a generic display fault.

What not to buy for this problem

External accessories do not change an app’s declared orientation, aspect ratio, resizability, or keyboard-inset handling. A Bluetooth keyboard, USB-C adapter, stand, case, or screen protector may be useful for other reasons, but none directly fixes compatibility letterboxing or a split-screen redraw failure. Solve the window configuration first.

When the correct fix is an app update

System overrides can improve a particular session, but robust behavior requires the app to support adaptive layouts, resizable activities, current window-inset handling, and multi-window transitions. If full-screen mode consistently clips content, the app’s layout is not prepared for that window. Keep the temporary setting that gives the least disruptive result, report the exact reproduction steps, and check for an update that targets a recent Android API level.

A practical order of operations

  1. Confirm whether the problem affects one app or the whole system.
  2. Search Settings for that app’s aspect-ratio or full-screen control.
  3. Try Full screen, App default, and Compatibility one at a time, relaunching after each change.
  4. Use any available letterbox-position or redraw control.
  5. Rotate, fold or unfold, and leave and re-enter split-screen to force a clean window change.
  6. For keyboard overlap, adjust the divider and orientation before changing IME settings.
  7. Reserve ADB compatibility overrides for controlled testing.
  8. If the app remains broken, treat missing adaptive support as the limiting factor and report it with precise device and window details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are black bars proof that my foldable screen is defective?

Usually no. If the bars appear only around a particular app while the launcher and other apps use the panel normally, Android is probably letterboxing that app to preserve its expected shape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did an app change size after I opened or closed the phone?

Folding and unfolding are configuration changes. Android can recalculate size-compatibility behavior during that transition, so the app may need a redraw or relaunch.

Can I force every app to use the entire display?

Not reliably. A supported Android 14 QPR1 per-app override can change an individual app’s aspect ratio, but device support varies and forcing a fixed-layout app full-screen can produce clipping or stretched controls.

Why does the keyboard work in full-screen but cover the field in split-screen?

Split-screen leaves less usable height, and the app or keyboard may not handle the resulting insets correctly. Divider position, orientation, app resizability, and the active input method all affect the result.

Will an ADB compatibility override permanently fix the app?

No. Android documents these as temporary, package-specific testing controls. They can be reset and may reveal new layout defects; proper adaptive support must come from the app.
