How to Fix Black Bars and Cut-Off Content on a Non-Standard Aspect-Ratio Screen

Black bars are usually the correct result of preserving an image’s shape on a differently shaped screen; cut-off edges usually mean overscan or zoom. Fix the problem in this order: select the display’s native or recommended resolution and refresh rate, choose a pixel-accurate picture-size mode on the TV or monitor, set GPU scaling to preserve aspect ratio, then correct HDMI scaling or the source device if the frame is still cropped. Stretching can remove bars, but it changes geometry; cropping hides content.

First identify which problem you have

The same screen can show either black bars or missing content, and the remedies are opposite. Black bars generally mean the complete source frame is being fitted without changing its proportions. Cut-off taskbars, menu edges, subtitles, or video borders mean part of the frame is outside the visible area.

What you see Most likely behavior What the display is doing
Bars on the left and right Underscan, pillarboxing, or aspect-ratio-preserving scaling A narrower source, such as 4:3, is shown on a wider panel without distortion.
Bars above and below Underscan, letterboxing, or aspect-ratio-preserving scaling A wide or cinematic source is fitted inside a shorter panel.
Desktop corners, taskbar, subtitles, or menus disappear Overscan or zoom The TV enlarges the picture so its margins extend beyond the panel.
Image is centered with unused space on every side No scaling or 1:1 mapping The original raster is displayed at its source size instead of being enlarged.
Everything fills the panel but circles look oval or people look wide Full-panel stretching The image is expanded independently in each direction and its proportions change.

Apple describes underscan as pillarboxing or letterboxing, with bars at the sides or above and below, while overscan hides margins beyond the screen as if the picture were zoomed in. Microsoft uses similar terminology for scaling that preserves the source aspect ratio. These are not automatically faults: a 4:3 program on a widescreen panel can correctly have vertical bars.

Why aspect ratio creates bars

Aspect ratio is the relationship between an image’s width and height. A source can be 4:3, 16:9, 16:10, 21:9, or another shape, while the physical panel has its own fixed shape. If the source and panel do not match, there are only three ways to fill every pixel:

  • Preserve proportions and show the whole frame: scale until one dimension reaches the panel limit, leaving bars in the other dimension.
  • Stretch to fill: expand width and height independently. This removes bars but distorts text, circles, faces, and game geometry.
  • Crop or zoom: enlarge until the panel is filled and discard the parts that no longer fit. This removes bars by hiding content.

For documents, desktop work, retro games, and video where the original composition matters, preserving proportions is normally the safest choice. Use stretching only when geometric distortion is unimportant, and use cropping only when losing the outer frame is acceptable.

Use this safe fix order

Changing settings in the wrong layer can make the symptom harder to diagnose. Work from the source mode outward: computer or console resolution, display picture controls, GPU scaling, then source-device and cable checks.

1. Record and select the panel’s native mode

Open the computer or console display settings and note the mode identified as native or recommended. Select that resolution and the refresh rate supported by the panel. A non-native source mode can trigger scaling and borders before the TV or monitor has a chance to apply its own fit setting.

  • Confirm that the selected width and height match the panel’s advertised native resolution.
  • Use the intended refresh rate rather than an unsupported or improvised combination.
  • After applying the mode, check a desktop with visible edges and a test window, not only a full-screen video.

If the native mode is unavailable, unstable, or causes repeated signal loss, leave the resolution at a stable supported setting and continue with the display and GPU checks. Do not assume a new cable will correct an incorrect aspect-ratio choice.

2. Change the active input’s picture-size control

Open the TV or monitor’s picture menu while the affected HDMI or DisplayPort input is selected. Manufacturers use different labels, so look for Screen Fit, Just Scan, 1:1, Original, Computer mode, Screen Fill, Aspect Ratio, or Format.

For a computer, choose the option that displays every source pixel or disables overscan. A fit, original, or computer mode should expose the desktop edges instead of zooming them beyond the bezel. If the menu offers separate settings for each input, repeat the change on the input actually carrying the computer, console, or set-top-box signal.

LG documents bars, zoom, and cropped edges as consequences of aspect-ratio or picture-size settings. If the TV has an explicit overscan toggle, turn it off for the PC input. A setting that works for a broadcast channel may not be appropriate for an HDMI computer signal.

3. Decide whether bars are preferable to distortion

If the image now fits but bars remain, the display is probably preserving the source geometry. Keep that mode when you need the complete frame and accurate proportions. Stretch-to-fill removes the bars by filling the panel, but Microsoft describes this mode as expanding horizontally and vertically as much as possible while maintaining the aspect ratio only in the preserving mode; a true full-panel stretch can change shapes.

Priority Choose Result
Accurate geometry Preserve aspect ratio, fit, original, or 1:1 Complete image with bars when the shapes differ.
Maximum visible area Crop or zoom No bars, but outer content is hidden.
Edge-to-edge fill regardless of shape Full panel or stretch No bars, but proportions may be wrong.
Pixel-for-pixel sharpness No scaling or 1:1 Sharp source pixels with unused panel area when resolutions differ.

4. Set GPU scaling deliberately

If the TV or monitor is set correctly but the computer still shows borders or distortion, use the graphics control panel’s scaling options. The labels describe the behavior more reliably than the brand-specific menu layout.

NVIDIA graphics

Choose Aspect ratio when the image should expand as far as possible without changing its proportions. Choose No scaling to center the original image at its source size; this can leave a black border on all sides. Avoid a fill option when accurate geometry is required.

NVIDIA notes that many TVs and HDTVs overscan by enlarging the video image to hide possible edge artifacts. For a PC source, its desktop-size guidance says display controls that turn off overscan provide the best result. Therefore, first use the TV’s pixel-accurate mode, then use the GPU’s size controls only if the desktop still extends beyond the panel.

AMD graphics

AMD exposes three relevant choices: Preserve aspect ratio, Full panel, and Center. Preserve aspect ratio fits a non-native image without changing its shape. Full panel expands the current image to the monitor’s full size and can stretch it. Center applies no scaling and centers the image, which may leave borders.

AMD requires a digital connection such as HDMI, DVI, or DisplayPort for GPU Scaling. If the controls are missing, verify that the display is connected digitally and that the graphics driver recognizes it as an active display.

5. Correct persistent HDMI overscan or underscan

Use the GPU’s size controls when a digital TV input remains slightly too large or too small after the TV’s picture-size mode is corrected. AMD calls this control HDMI Scaling; it adjusts the image when it does not fit the display. Move it gradually until all four desktop edges are visible, and stop once the border is correct.

Do not use HDMI scaling to compensate for the wrong source resolution. A small adjustment can correct a TV’s remaining overscan, but it cannot turn a mismatched aspect ratio into a geometrically accurate full-screen image.

6. Adjust underscan on macOS

With the TV selected in macOS, open System Settings > Displays and move the Underscan control if it is available. This is useful when the entire Mac desktop is visible but does not reach the panel edges, or when the TV and Mac disagree about the usable image area.

If macOS does not show an Underscan control, use the TV’s picture-size setting instead, or try another Mac resolution supported by the display. The absence of the slider does not prove that the TV is correctly configured; the display’s own fit control may be the only available adjustment.

7. Fix the output of a console or set-top box

A television change cannot always repair cropping created by the source device. LG warns that a set-top box can send a zoomed or incorrectly formatted signal, in which case its output format or scaling must be changed. Open the console or box’s video settings and choose an output mode appropriate to the panel, then retest with its system menus.

Keep a 4:3 source in its original shape when possible. On a widescreen TV, vertical bars on the left and right are the expected way to show the complete 4:3 frame. Removing those bars requires either stretching the 4:3 image or cropping its top and bottom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Check the cable only when the mode is unavailable or unstable

A cable is relevant when the desired resolution and refresh combination cannot be selected, the signal drops out, or the display repeatedly renegotiates the mode. Replace it with a certified HDMI cable matched to the required resolution and refresh rate. A cable does not fix a TV that is simply zoomed, overscanning, stretching, or using the wrong aspect-ratio mode.

How to choose the right scaling mode

Use the following decision framework instead of changing several controls at once:

  1. Are any desktop or video edges missing? Disable zoom or overscan in the display’s active-input picture menu. If the frame remains cropped, adjust the source device or GPU size control.
  2. Are all edges visible but bars remain? Check the source and panel shapes. If they differ, preserve aspect ratio unless you deliberately accept distortion or cropping.
  3. Are circles, text, or faces visibly distorted? Replace Full panel or stretch with Preserve aspect ratio, Aspect ratio, Fit, Original, or 1:1.
  4. Is the image sharp but surrounded by unused space? No scaling or Center is active. Keep it for pixel accuracy, or select aspect-ratio scaling to use more of the panel without distortion.
  5. Is the desired resolution or refresh rate missing? Check the digital connection and cable capability, then confirm that the GPU and display both support the mode.

Common scenarios and the correct remedy

4:3 content on a 16:9 monitor

Vertical bars are expected when the complete 4:3 frame is preserved. Select aspect-ratio-preserving scaling. Stretching makes the picture wider than intended; zooming removes some of the top and bottom.

16:9 video on an ultrawide panel

A 16:9 frame may have bars on both sides because the ultrawide panel is wider. Keep those bars for an undistorted picture. A full-panel mode fills more width only by stretching, while a crop mode sacrifices the top and bottom or side composition depending on the implementation.

A laptop connected to a living-room TV

Use the laptop’s native or recommended output, then select the TV’s Computer, Just Scan, Screen Fit, Original, or equivalent pixel-accurate mode. If the desktop edges remain hidden, disable overscan in the TV menu and use GPU size controls only for the remaining mismatch.

A console menu is cut off but the computer is correct

Because each input can retain separate picture settings, first verify the TV mode for the console’s input. If that is correct, change the console’s output format or scaling. Do not change the computer’s GPU settings to solve a problem generated by the console.

A video has bars even after every setting is correct

The bars may be part of the source’s composition. Cinematic material can include letterboxing, and a 4:3 program can include pillarboxing on a widescreen display. Removing source-intended bars necessarily means cropping or stretching; it is not a hidden resolution defect.

What can make the problem worse

  • Forcing an arbitrary resolution: This can add another scaling step and reduce text sharpness.
  • Using Full panel as a universal fix: It fills the display but can make proportions visibly wrong.
  • Zooming to hide bars: It also hides subtitles, taskbars, menu edges, or other frame content.
  • Changing the TV and GPU simultaneously: Two compensating adjustments can create a new border or make later diagnosis impossible. Change one layer, test, and record the result.
  • Replacing a cable first: A new cable cannot correct an incorrect picture-size or aspect-ratio setting when the existing connection already carries the selected mode reliably.
  • Assuming every input shares settings: TVs often store picture-size choices per input, so check the active source.

A repeatable test after each change

  1. Display a desktop or system menu with a visible top edge, bottom edge, and side edges.
  2. Confirm that the taskbar, menu bar, window borders, and any corner indicators are fully visible.
  3. Open content with a known circular shape or square grid to detect stretching.
  4. Check small text for softness that can indicate unnecessary scaling.
  5. Record the selected source resolution, refresh rate, TV picture mode, GPU scaling mode, and any HDMI Scaling value before moving to another layer.

If the complete frame is visible, geometry is proportional, and the chosen resolution is stable, the remaining bars are normally the mathematically correct consequence of fitting one aspect ratio inside another. If edges are still missing, return to the active input’s overscan or zoom setting, then the source device and GPU size controls.

When to leave the bars in place

Bars are the least damaging option when the alternatives are distortion or lost content. They preserve the source’s proportions, keep subtitles and interface edges visible, and avoid enlarging pixels unnecessarily. Remove them only when you have consciously chosen stretched geometry or cropped composition for a particular game, presentation, or video.
