BitLocker error 0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect.” In Microsoft’s documented BitLocker enablement case, the operating-system disk does not have a separate active system partition. Check the disk layout before changing encryption. If that partition is missing or unusable, use the BitLocker preparation method for your Windows release, then restart. If the partition is already present, investigate BitLocker logs, policy, and the exact operation that failed instead of repeating a partition change.
The same hexadecimal code is also used by Windows Setup and Windows Update, where corrupted files, permissions, or configuration can be responsible. The correct fix therefore depends on whether the message appeared while enabling BitLocker, shrinking a volume, running manage-bde, unlocking a drive, installing Windows, or applying updates.

What 0x80070057 means in a BitLocker message
Microsoft displays the failure as “ERROR: An error occurred (code 0x80070057) The parameter is incorrect.” Microsoft’s BitLocker support article, updated February 12, 2026, identifies a specific cause for the enablement scenario: This problem occurs if you don’t have a separate active system partition on the operating system drive.
That partition stores boot files separately from the encrypted Windows volume. Its exact size, file system, and boot status depend on the Windows version and firmware configuration. A disk can appear to contain a small reserved or system partition yet still fail if the partition is not usable as the system or boot partition required by that release.

Do not assume every 0x80070057 message has this cause. Windows reuses the code in setup, update, servicing, and partition operations. Identify the failed action first, then follow the branch below.
Start by recording the failed operation
Write down the exact wizard page, command, or management action that produced the message. This prevents applying a risky partition procedure to an update problem.
- Enable BitLocker: the separate active system-partition issue is the documented BitLocker case.
- Shrink a partition: a damaged or corrupt System Reserved partition has been associated with this message in a Microsoft Q&A response, but that is a hypothesis to verify, not a universal diagnosis.
manage-bde: record the complete command, target volume, and output. A command parameter, policy restriction, or volume state may be involved.- Unlock or resume protection: note whether the volume is the operating-system drive, a fixed data drive, or removable media.
- Windows Setup: treat it as a setup and disk-layout investigation, not automatically as a BitLocker repair.
- Windows Update: use the update-failure workflow unless BitLocker logs show that encryption is the operation that failed.
Also record the Windows edition and build, whether the device uses local administration or an organization-managed policy, and whether the disk is configured for the boot mode expected by that Windows installation.
Check the system disk before changing anything
Open Disk Management
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Press
Win + Xand choose Disk Management. - Locate the disk containing the
Windowsfolder. Do not rely only on the drive letter; drive letters can change in recovery or setup environments. - Map every partition on that disk, including the Windows volume and any small system, reserved, EFI, or recovery partitions.
The Microsoft-specific failure occurs when the operating-system disk lacks a separate active system partition. Verify that a separate partition exists and is marked as the system or boot partition required by the installed Windows release. On systems where an active flag is used, confirm that the appropriate partition is active; on newer firmware layouts, the boot requirement may be represented differently. Do not force an “active” flag simply because the word appears in an older procedure.

Protect your recovery information
Before resizing or recreating partitions, make sure you can access the BitLocker recovery key and that important files are backed up. A restart may be required, and an altered boot layout can trigger recovery. A USB device can store a recovery key, but having one is not itself a repair for 0x80070057.
Do not delete a small partition by appearance
System, EFI, recovery, and manufacturer partitions can look similar in Disk Management. Deleting or formatting the wrong one can make Windows unbootable or remove recovery tools. If the layout is unclear, stop and collect a screenshot or partition map for the device administrator or Microsoft support rather than guessing.
Repair the system partition for the installed Windows version
When the layout confirms that the separate system partition is missing or unusable, use the BitLocker setup wizard or Microsoft’s drive-preparation method for the specific Windows release. The procedure varies by operating system and by whether the machine uses a modern firmware partition layout or an older BIOS-style layout.
Use the BitLocker wizard when it offers preparation
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption, or open Settings and search for Manage BitLocker.
- Choose Turn on BitLocker for the operating-system drive.
- If Windows offers to prepare the drive or create the required system partition, allow that operation to complete.
- Follow the prompts to choose an unlock method and save the recovery key in an approved location.
- Restart when prompted. The partition change is not complete until the restart finishes.
If the wizard reports that it cannot prepare the drive, cancel rather than repeatedly shrinking or deleting partitions. Capture the exact message and continue with the diagnostic steps below.

Understand the legacy bdehdcfg example
Microsoft documents an older server or Server Core example using:
bdehdcfg -target c: shrink -newdriveletter s: -size 300
This example shrinks the operating-system volume and creates a 300-MB system partition, then requires a restart. It is a version-specific illustration, not a universal command for current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations. Do not copy it blindly: the correct partition type, size, drive-letter handling, and boot configuration depend on the Windows release and firmware mode. Run a preparation command only when it is documented for that release and you have verified the target volume.
Restart and verify
- Restart after the preparation tool or wizard says to do so.
- Return to Disk Management and confirm that the separate system or boot partition is present and usable.
- Retry BitLocker from the same administrative context that originally failed.
- If the retry produces 0x80070057 again, stop making layout changes and inspect the logs and policies instead.
If the partition is present, inspect BitLocker diagnostics
Review Event Viewer
- Press
Win + R, entereventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Expand Applications and Services Logs.
- Open Microsoft > Windows and review BitLocker-related channels around the failure time.
- Look for entries that identify the volume, operation, policy, or component that rejected a parameter.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also refers to BitLocker API tracing when it is enabled. If tracing is available in your environment, collect the relevant entries rather than enabling or changing tracing casually on a production device.

Check management and policy controls
A local BitLocker wizard can be constrained by policy from Local Group Policy, Intune, Configuration Manager, or another administrator-controlled system. Check whether encryption method, startup authentication, recovery-key escrow, removable-media rules, or operating-system-drive requirements are being enforced. A policy conflict can make a valid disk layout fail even when the partition is present.

Verify WinRE and boot configuration
BitLocker workflows can depend on the Windows Recovery Environment and the boot files being available in the expected location. Confirm that WinRE is configured as required by your Windows release and that the machine boots from the intended system partition. If the device is organization-managed, have the administrator verify the policy and escrow status before changing local settings.
When the error appears while shrinking a partition
A Microsoft Q&A response links 0x80070057 during a shrink operation with a damaged or corrupt System Reserved partition. Treat that association as a lead, not proof. First capture the partition map and identify which volume Disk Management is trying to shrink.
- Check that the target volume is the Windows volume and that it has sufficient free space.
- Confirm that the system or reserved partition is separate and readable.
- Review Event Viewer for disk, BitLocker, and storage errors at the same timestamp.
- Do not delete, format, or move a reserved or recovery partition merely to make the shrink operation complete.
- If the partition appears damaged, use the Windows-version-appropriate recovery or repair procedure, preferably with a current backup and an administrator who can restore the boot configuration.
If the shrink request came from the BitLocker wizard, retry through the wizard after repair. If it came from Disk Management for an unrelated storage task, troubleshoot it as a partition-management failure rather than assuming encryption is at fault.

The hexadecimal code alone does not identify which manage-bde parameter was rejected; the command text and event record are needed to distinguish syntax, policy, volume-state, and boot-layout problems.
Separate BitLocker problems from Windows Setup and Update failures
Windows Setup
If the message appeared while installing Windows, identify the disk and partition selected by Setup and review the setup logs. The code is reused for incorrect configuration and file or permission problems. Follow the setup-specific Microsoft workflow and do not run a BitLocker partition command unless Setup or BitLocker diagnostics specifically identify a missing system partition.
Windows Update
If the failure occurred during an update, use the Windows Update troubleshooter where applicable, verify permissions and configuration, and apply Microsoft’s recommended SFC/DISM or servicing repairs for that update scenario. Reset update components only after confirming that the update context is the source of the code. A BitLocker partition repair will not correct a generic update-file or permission failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOther Windows components
For an error raised by a different installer or service, capture that component’s logs and command line. The shared code is a parameter error, not a diagnosis that identifies one universal repair.
Compare the available repair paths
| Repair path | Best fit | What it changes | Main risks and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| BitLocker wizard preparation | Supported desktop workflow when BitLocker reports that preparation is required | Uses Windows’ version-appropriate preparation and then requests a restart | Confirm the correct operating-system volume, save the recovery key, and verify the resulting system partition |
| Documented command-line preparation | A Windows release whose Microsoft instructions specify a drive-preparation command | May shrink the OS volume and create a separate system partition; the documented legacy example creates 300 MB | Version and firmware dependent; do not reuse the legacy example blindly; backup and restart are required |
| Administrator-managed remediation | Devices controlled by Local Policy, Intune, Configuration Manager, or another management system | Aligns encryption, recovery, boot, and compliance settings with organizational policy | Local changes may be overwritten or blocked; provide logs, build, partition map, and policy details to the administrator |
| Setup or Update workflow | 0x80070057 reported during Windows installation or updating | Repairs the relevant files, permissions, configuration, or update components | Do not alter BitLocker partitions unless those logs identify a BitLocker boot-layout failure |
What to collect before escalation
Escalate when the separate system partition is present, the version-appropriate preparation fails, or logs point to a policy or boot issue you cannot change safely. Include:
- The exact wizard step or complete
manage-bdecommand. - Windows edition, version, and build.
- A partition map showing the operating-system disk and system, reserved, EFI, and recovery partitions.
- Current BitLocker protection and conversion status.
- Event Viewer entries from the failure time, including BitLocker-related channels.
- Whether the device is managed by local policy, Intune, Configuration Manager, or another administrator.
- Whether the machine uses the expected boot mode and whether a restart changed the message.
Provide this evidence to Microsoft support or the device administrator instead of deleting partitions or repeatedly retrying encryption.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Identify the operation that produced 0x80070057.
- If it was BitLocker enablement, inspect the operating-system disk for a separate system or boot partition.
- If the partition is missing or unusable, use the Windows-version-appropriate BitLocker preparation workflow and restart.
- If the partition exists, inspect Event Viewer, BitLocker tracing where enabled, WinRE, and management policy.
- If the error came from shrinking, Setup, Update, or another component, follow that component’s workflow instead of applying a generic BitLocker repair.
- Collect the command, build, partition map, status, logs, and policy details before escalation.
