Most problems that appear after changing an Android launcher come from a mismatch between the launcher and Android’s default-app setting, notification permission, background limits, widgets, or the phone maker’s power-management rules. Fix them in a controlled order: confirm the default Home app, restore notification and badge permissions, measure battery use, choose an appropriate background mode, update and restart, then isolate widgets and other add-ons. If the new launcher remains unstable, switch back to the system launcher before uninstalling it.
Why a launcher change can affect battery, notifications, and stability
A launcher is more than an icon grid. Android starts it when you press Home, uses it for the app drawer and widgets, and may connect it to gesture navigation, notification badges, accessibility services, live wallpapers, icon packs, and automation tools. Replacing it changes several relationships at once.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Default-app routing: Android must know which app handles the Home action. If the setting is incomplete, Home, Recents, lock-screen unlock, or gestures can behave inconsistently.
- Notification permission: On Android 13 and later, apps use an opt-in notification model. A launcher or companion app cannot post notifications until you grant the runtime permission, and each notification channel can still be disabled separately.
- Background policy: Android balances delivery reliability against battery life. A launcher, widget, or companion process that is restricted may stop refreshing, scheduling work, or receiving background updates.
- OEM power management: Phone makers add battery optimization, unrestricted-data, special-access, and auto-start controls. These can override what the standard Android settings suggest.
- Extensions: Widgets, live wallpapers, icon packs, accessibility add-ons, and automation integrations run alongside the launcher. One incompatible extension can look like a launcher crash or unusually high battery use.
There is no authoritative general statistic showing how often a launcher switch causes these symptoms. Treat the timing as a useful clue, not proof that the launcher alone is defective.

Record what is actually failing
Before changing several controls, write down the phone model, Android version, launcher version, when the problem began, and whether it happens on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both. Note whether the battery falls while the phone is idle, whether only one app’s notifications are missing, and how often the launcher crashes. This baseline lets you tell whether a change helped.

Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage (the wording varies by phone) and inspect the launcher and the apps whose widgets or notifications are affected. Google recommends using the device’s battery diagnostics, leaving Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled, and reviewing per-app background use. After a system update, initial setup, or reset, Android may optimize apps for a while, so temporary extra drain during that period is not conclusive.
| Symptom | Most relevant layer | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Battery falls quickly while idle | Background work, widgets, live wallpaper, or OEM power rules | Battery-usage screen, then remove extensions and review the launcher’s Battery setting |
| One app’s alerts disappeared | Runtime permission, notification channel, or background restriction | Settings > Notifications > App notifications for that app |
| Badge count is stale but alerts arrive | Launcher badge setting or notification-service state | Enable badges, mark applicable messages read, then restart |
| Home or gestures fail | Default Home app or OEM navigation compatibility | Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app |
| Launcher freezes or crashes | Outdated code, widget, integration, or another installed app | Install updates, restart, remove add-ons, and test in safe mode |
Confirm the default launcher and navigation path
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app. Some phones call this Default home app or place it under Choose default apps.
- Select the launcher you intend to use. If the new launcher is the one you are testing, select it explicitly rather than relying on a one-time Home prompt.
- Press Home, open Recents, lock and unlock the phone, and test the configured navigation gestures or buttons. Repeat each action several times.
- If gestures, Recents, or the Home animation fail on the phone maker’s software, select the system launcher temporarily. Some MI-series devices restrict full-screen gestures with third-party launchers; in that case the system launcher is a compatibility test, not evidence that every third-party launcher is broken.
If the system launcher works normally, keep it selected while you troubleshoot the other launcher. That prevents a faulty Home handler from making the phone difficult to use and gives you a reliable comparison.
Restore missing notifications and badge counts
Grant Android 13 or newer notification permission
Android 13 changed notifications from the previous opt-out model to an opt-in model. The Android Open Source Project describes it this way: “Notifications in Android 13 use an opt-in model, which is a change from previous Android versions, which use an opt-out model.” Apps using this model request the POST_NOTIFICATIONS runtime permission.
On Android 13 or later, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, choose the affected app, and turn on Allow notifications. If the launcher itself has a notification or badge companion, check that app as well. A permission prompt can appear only after the app requests it, so opening the app once after installation may be necessary.
Check notification channels, not only the master switch
In the same App notifications screen, open the individual notification categories or channels. A channel such as messages, reminders, or background service alerts can be disabled even when the app-wide switch is on. Restore the channel’s alert, sound, vibration, and lock-screen options according to your needs. Do not enable every channel indiscriminately if you only need a specific type of alert.

Enable the launcher’s badge option
Open the launcher’s own settings and turn on notification badges, dots, or unread counts. Badge behavior depends on the launcher and on the notification data supplied by the underlying app; it is not a universal Android guarantee. For mail, chat, or task apps that clear badges when items are read, mark the relevant messages read and refresh the app.
Restart when badges are stale
If alerts arrive but the icon count remains old, restart the phone after correcting permissions and badge settings. A reboot reinitializes Android’s notification service and can restore updated badge information when the service stopped supplying it to the launcher.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAllow enough background access for delivery
When notifications arrive only after opening an app, inspect that app’s background and battery settings as well as the launcher’s. A restricted process may not receive background delivery promptly. Change one app at a time, test for several hours, and watch the battery-usage screen so that improved reliability does not hide a new drain problem.
Measure and reduce battery drain
Use the battery screen before changing controls
Open the launcher’s App info > Battery page, or select it from Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Look at foreground and background activity, compare it with the screen-on time, and check whether a widget provider, wallpaper, or companion service ranks higher than the launcher. A launcher that is high only during setup may settle after Android finishes optimization; a launcher that stays high while the phone is idle needs isolation.
Keep Adaptive Battery and standard battery optimization enabled unless a specific test requires otherwise. Changing several apps to unrestricted access at once makes the result impossible to interpret and can create unnecessary drain.

Choose the least permissive background mode that still works
| Android battery mode | What it does | When to test it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimized | Android manages background activity and uses it as the default. | Start here for the launcher and affected apps. | Some widgets or delayed notifications may refresh less aggressively. |
| Unrestricted | Allows the app to perform background work without the normal optimization limits. | Test for a launcher or app whose widgets or notifications stop while optimized. | Android warns that it may consume more battery. |
| Restricted | Limits background work and can stop alarms, jobs, or other delivery. | Use only for apps that do not need timely background activity. | Widgets, scheduled work, and notifications can fail. |
To change the setting, open Settings > Apps > [launcher or affected app] > Battery. Select Optimized first. If a reproducible notification or widget failure remains, test Unrestricted for that one app and monitor battery use. Avoid Restricted for software that needs alarms, jobs, widgets, or background notification delivery.

Standard Android settings may not be the final authority. Motorola’s per-app controls, for example, include permissions, unrestricted data, battery optimization, and other special app access. Other manufacturers expose equivalent controls under names such as auto-start, background activity, sleeping apps, or adaptive power saving. Open the launcher’s App info page and inspect every battery, data, permission, and special-access section your phone provides.
Allow unrestricted data if the launcher or its companion must update over mobile data and your data-saver policy blocks it. Conversely, leave unrestricted data off when the launcher has no network-dependent feature and you are trying to minimize traffic. Make one change, observe the battery graph, and revert it if it does not solve the symptom.
Remove high-churn extensions
Temporarily remove third-party widgets, live wallpapers, icon packs, accessibility add-ons, and automation integrations. Use a static wallpaper and the system launcher for a comparison period. If idle drain drops, add components back one at a time until the increase returns. The last component restored is a stronger suspect than the launcher label itself.
Stop launcher crashes and freezes
Update before deeper changes
Install pending Android system updates and launcher updates from the phone’s normal update mechanisms. Reboot after installation and retest Home, Recents, the app drawer, widgets, and lock/unlock. Updates can change gesture APIs, notification behavior, and OEM compatibility, so a current launcher and current system are the most meaningful combination to test.

Separate the launcher from its add-ons
Set a static wallpaper, remove nonessential widgets, disable icon packs and accessibility integrations, and pause automation rules. Then use the launcher with only its built-in features. A crash that disappears in this minimal configuration points to an extension or integration. Re-enable one item at a time; do not restore the entire set simultaneously.
Use safe mode to identify another installed app
Start the phone in safe mode using the procedure supplied for your model. Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. Motorola identifies it as a way to determine whether an installed app is responsible for crashes, reboots, or fast drain. Test the launcher and basic navigation there:
- If the problem disappears in safe mode, a downloaded app, widget provider, wallpaper, accessibility service, or automation tool is likely involved. Exit safe mode and disable or uninstall candidates one by one.
- If the problem remains in safe mode with the system launcher, the cause may be the operating system, an OEM component, or hardware rather than the downloaded launcher.
- If only the third-party launcher fails while the system launcher remains stable, keep the system launcher selected and contact the launcher vendor with the crash frequency, Android version, and device model.
Retest after every single change
Use the same Home, Recents, lock/unlock, widget, and notification checks after each change. A controlled sequence prevents a permission fix from being mistaken for an update fix and makes it possible to undo the change that introduced a new problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Switch back to the system launcher and uninstall cleanly
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app and choose the phone’s system launcher.
- Press Home, open Recents, test gestures or navigation buttons, and lock and unlock the device. Confirm that the system launcher remains selected after a restart.
- Open Settings > Apps > [third-party launcher]. If it has device-administrator access, open the relevant security or special-access screen and disable that access first.
- In the launcher’s App info page, open Open by default or the equivalent menu and clear its defaults if that option is available.
- Uninstall the launcher only after the system launcher is working. If Android will not allow removal, repeat the device-administrator and default-app checks, then follow the phone maker’s uninstall instructions.
Uninstalling before changing the Home app can leave Android waiting for a handler that no longer exists or can make the next Home press open an unexpected chooser. Reverting first preserves a usable navigation path.

Account for Android and OEM differences
Android version changes
Notification permission behavior described above applies to Android 13 and later. Earlier versions use the older notification model, but individual app channels and OEM battery controls can still suppress alerts. Always use the labels shown on your phone rather than assuming a menu path from another Android version.
Best Value
Gesture and navigation restrictions
Some OEM skins expose full-screen gestures only to their own launcher or implement third-party gesture support differently. If selecting the system launcher restores gestures, decide whether reliable navigation is more important than a particular launcher feature. You can continue testing the third-party launcher with button navigation if the phone offers that option.
Power-management overlays
Battery optimization, sleeping-app lists, auto-start, data saver, and special app access may be separate controls. Check both the launcher and the affected notification or widget app. A notification can fail because the messaging app is restricted even when the launcher is unrestricted; a widget can fail for the opposite reason.
Post-update and post-reset optimization
Google notes that battery behavior can be temporarily worse after an update or initial setup while Android optimizes applications. Keep the phone connected to power when practical, allow the optimization period to complete, and continue measuring rather than making every app unrestricted immediately.
How to evaluate another launcher without repeating the problem
When choosing a replacement, evaluate the interactions that caused trouble rather than judging only appearance.
| Evaluation area | Questions to ask | Practical test |
|---|---|---|
| Battery and background behavior | Does the launcher expose battery diagnostics or clearly document background needs? | Check idle battery use and background activity with only built-in features enabled. |
| Notification badges | Does it support dots or counts, and does it respect Android 13+ permissions and channels? | Send a test alert, read it, and verify that the badge clears without opening unrelated apps. |
| OEM navigation | Are Home, Recents, lock/unlock, and full-screen gestures supported on your phone’s software? | Repeat navigation tests after a restart, not only immediately after installation. |
| Widgets and accessibility | Do your essential widgets, live wallpapers, icon packs, and accessibility tools work together? | Add each extension separately and observe crashes and battery use. |
| Updates and support | Does the vendor maintain the launcher for your Android version and provide a clear crash-report path? | Check the update history and support instructions before making it your default. |
Install and test one launcher at a time. Keep the system launcher available as a known-good fallback until notifications, battery behavior, navigation, and widgets all pass your normal daily routine.
When to escalate to support or battery service
Contact the launcher vendor or phone manufacturer after you have recorded the model, Android version, launcher version, battery-usage screen, crash frequency, notification symptoms, and safe-mode result. State whether the system launcher changes the behavior and list the specific settings you tested.
Consider repair or battery service only when rapid drain continues with the system launcher, with downloaded extensions removed, and after software diagnostics and background settings have been ruled out. A new charger or power bank does not correct a launcher permission, notification-channel, or background-policy problem.
