If your Galaxy A36 or A56 suddenly loses charge or feels hot after an update, first verify the software build and give Samsung’s optimization process several days. An operating-system upgrade can temporarily increase background work while the phone relearns your usage pattern. Persistent drain, heat while idle, shutdowns, or a failed battery diagnostic point to an app, radio condition, charging accessory, or hardware problem that needs targeted troubleshooting.
“One UI 9.0” is not confirmed for these models in the firmware information available here. The Galaxy A56 record lists Android 16 releases and a One UI 8.5 feature release dated May 19, 2026, followed by a security release dated September 16, 2026. Rollout names and availability vary by model, country, and carrier, so check the exact build shown on your phone before applying advice.

1. Confirm what actually installed
Do not diagnose a battery problem from the name shown in a notification or online post. Samsung can use different One UI labels, build numbers, and release dates for different variants. A feature update may also be followed by a separate security update, making the phone appear to have changed twice.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings > About phone > Software information.
- Record the One UI version, Android version, Build number, and Android security patch level.
- Open Settings > Software update and select Download and install to check for a newer build.
- Write down the date the update finished and when the drain or heat began.
The listed Galaxy A56 firmware record verifies Android 16 releases and One UI 8.5 on May 19, 2026, plus a security release on September 16, 2026. It does not verify a One UI 9.0 release for the A56, and the available information does not verify One UI 9.0 for the A36. If your phone displays a different label, use the build number and security patch level when contacting Samsung or your carrier.

2. Decide whether the drain is temporary optimization
After an operating-system upgrade, the phone may rebuild indexes, optimize applications, restore data, and learn a new battery-use pattern. Samsung describes battery optimization as a process that learns usage after initial use following a purchase or OS upgrade. During this period, extra activity and warmth can be noticeable, especially while the phone is charging or restoring a large backup.
- Restart the phone once after the update has completed.
- Open both the Galaxy Store and Google Play Store, then install pending app updates.
- Use the phone normally for several days rather than repeatedly changing settings.
- Check Settings > Battery once or twice a day and note whether drain is trending down.
There is no verified universal percentage for “normal” post-update loss and no published temperature threshold that can be applied to every A36 or A56. A short-lived increase that steadily improves is different from a phone that remains hot and loses charge at the same rate after the optimization period.
3. Find the process consuming the battery
Changing many settings at once hides the cause. Start with the battery-use list so you can distinguish an individual app from system-wide activity.
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review the daily graph and the list of apps and services using power.
- Compare a day of ordinary use with a period when the phone was mostly idle.
- Tap an unusually high app or service to inspect its foreground and background activity.
When one app is responsible
If a recently installed or updated app is disproportionately high, update it first. If the problem began immediately after that app was installed, clear its cache using the app’s own settings or temporarily uninstall it. Reinstall only after confirming that battery life and temperature improve. Samsung notes that some third-party apps can raise both battery consumption and temperature.
When no single app dominates
System-wide drain is more likely when several apps show ordinary use but the phone loses charge while the screen is off. Check reception, location services, synchronization, and charging conditions before assuming the battery itself has failed. Record whether the problem occurs on Wi-Fi, on mobile data, or in both situations; that comparison can reveal a radio or coverage issue.
4. Limit background activity without breaking notifications
Samsung’s background-usage controls can stop nonessential apps from waking repeatedly. They are useful after you have identified the likely consumers, but aggressive restrictions can delay notifications, alarms, navigation updates, or messages.
- Open Settings > Device care > Battery > Background usage limits.
- Place infrequently used, nonessential apps in Sleeping apps.
- Use Deep sleeping apps for apps that do not need to run or notify you in the background.
- Review Never sleeping apps and add only apps that must deliver timely notifications or perform continuous work.
Samsung’s developer documentation describes a policy in which unused, battery-consuming apps may enter sleeping mode after about three days and deep sleeping after about 16 days. Those intervals are policy descriptions, not guarantees, and Samsung may change them. Sleeping and deep sleeping limit background jobs and can delay notifications.
Apps that should usually stay out of deep sleep
- Messaging and calling apps for which immediate alerts matter.
- Alarm, calendar, or reminder apps that must run scheduled tasks.
- Navigation, safety, health, or wearable companion apps you actively rely on.
- Work-management apps that must synchronize during the day.
Keep the exception list short. If every app is marked as never sleeping, the control cannot reduce background drain.

5. Reduce display and radio load
The screen and wireless radios can consume more energy than any individual background app, particularly in poor coverage or at high brightness.
- Lower brightness or enable adaptive brightness, then shorten Screen timeout.
- Turn off Always On Display if you do not need it.
- Select a standard refresh rate when your model exposes that choice; a higher refresh rate uses more power during screen-on use.
- Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/location, and mobile hotspot when they are not needed.
- In weak-signal areas, move to a location with better reception or use Wi-Fi calling if your carrier and plan support it. A phone that repeatedly searches for service can drain faster than one with a stable signal.
Apply one change at a time and observe the battery graph. For example, if idle drain is high only on mobile data in a low-signal building, reducing screen brightness will not address the main cause.
6. Separate idle drain from screen-on drain
The pattern of loss is more informative than a single battery percentage. Use the comparisons below over a similar several-hour period.

7. Check charging conditions and overheating safely
A warm phone can be normal during fast charging or heavy work, but unusually high heat requires you to stop the activity that is producing it. Samsung warns that incompatible or damaged charging equipment can cause heat or damage.
- Stop gaming, recording video, navigation, hotspot use, and other intensive tasks while charging.
- Unplug the phone if it becomes unusually hot and let it cool in a ventilated place.
- Remove a thick case temporarily and keep the phone out of direct sunlight, a hot car, or a covered bed or sofa.
- Inspect the USB-C port for lint, moisture, bent contacts, or other debris. Do not force a tool into the port.
- Replace frayed, crushed, loose, or non-standard charging accessories with a Samsung-approved charger and cable suitable for the phone.
- Try charging again after the phone has cooled, without heavy use.
Do not continue charging a device that is swelling, smoking, giving off a burning smell, or repeatedly shutting down from heat. Disconnect it if safe to do so, avoid pressing on the battery or opening the phone, and arrange authorized service.
8. Use Samsung Members diagnostics
Samsung provides a built-in battery check that is more useful than guessing from how warm the case feels.
- Open Samsung Members.
- Tap Get help.
- Choose Interactive checks.
- Select Battery and follow the on-screen test.
Save the result and note the conditions under which the phone was tested. A poor result, continuing abnormal heat, repeated shutdowns, or rapid drain after the software and accessory checks is a reason to contact an authorized Samsung service center. Service availability and partner names vary by region.
9. Test whether a recent app is involved
Comparing normal operation with a minimal software environment can isolate an app without immediately erasing the phone. Android’s Safe Mode label and entry method can vary by model and software build; use the power-menu instructions shown on your A36 or A56 rather than relying on a different Galaxy model’s shortcut.

In Safe Mode, observe idle temperature and battery behavior long enough to reproduce the problem. If the phone is substantially cooler and loses less charge, remove or update recently added apps in normal mode, one at a time. If the same drain occurs in Safe Mode, an ordinary downloaded app is less likely to be the cause; investigate signal, charging, system software, or hardware instead.
10. Should you wipe the cache?
A cache wipe is not the first step for a phone that has just updated. Start with a restart, app updates, Battery usage inspection, and background controls. If a particular app misbehaves, clear that app’s cache from its app settings before considering broader recovery actions.
Clearing the system cache, where supported by the model and build, is intended to remove temporary system files and should not be treated as a guaranteed battery repair. Menu labels and recovery-key combinations can change, and using the wrong recovery option can erase data. Read the exact on-screen wording carefully: choose only a cache-clearing option, never a data-wipe option, unless you have deliberately decided to reset the phone and have a verified backup.

11. When a factory reset is justified
A factory reset is a last-resort software step, not a routine response to a few days of post-update drain. It removes accounts, photos, downloaded apps, messages, and local files from the phone. Before using it:
- Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and other files you cannot replace.
- Confirm that you know the Google and Samsung account credentials required after reset.
- Record important settings and export data from apps that do not synchronize automatically.
- Make sure the phone is charged and connected to a reliable network for setup.
Reset only after the optimization period, app investigation, background limits, radio/display checks, and charging-accessory test have failed. After the reset, set up the phone without restoring every app immediately. Use it long enough to establish whether battery life is normal, then reinstall apps in small groups. If heat and drain return after a clean setup, a downloaded app or hardware issue is more likely than leftover user data.
12. Escalate immediately for battery or thermal danger
Stop troubleshooting at home and seek authorized service if any of these occur:
- Visible swelling, a lifting back cover, smoke, a burning smell, or liquid damage.
- Repeated thermal shutdowns or a phone that becomes very hot while idle.
- A poor result in Samsung Members’ battery diagnostic.
- Rapid drain that continues after several days, app isolation, and testing with approved charging equipment.
- Charging that repeatedly stops, disconnects, or heats the connector.
Do not puncture, squeeze, freeze, or open the battery. Keep a damaged phone away from flammable materials and follow local battery-service and recycling instructions.

13. A practical decision path
- Verify the build. Confirm the One UI, Android, build, and security-patch entries in About phone.
- Allow optimization. Restart, update apps, and monitor for several days.
- Identify the consumer. Use Settings > Battery before changing many controls.
- Restrict selectively. Sleep nonessential apps while preserving notification-critical exceptions.
- Reduce avoidable load. Adjust brightness, refresh rate, Always On Display, radios, and hotspot use.
- Check charging. Cool the phone, inspect the port, remove the case temporarily, and use approved accessories.
- Isolate software. Compare Wi-Fi and mobile data, idle and screen-on use, and normal mode with Safe Mode or after removing a recent app.
- Diagnose and escalate. Run Samsung Members’ battery check and arrange service for persistent heat, poor results, shutdowns, or physical damage.
