If your Nothing Phone (3) began losing charge faster immediately after a system update, first treat it as possible post-update optimization rather than proof of a failed battery. Nothing says power use can temporarily rise while the system integrates and optimizes the new software. Its recommended routine is to restart the phone with the screen off, charge it for a full night, use it normally for 2–3 days, and monitor Settings > Battery > Battery usage during that period.
That window is guidance, not a guarantee. A single app, weak signal, 5G, cold conditions, high-load use, background radios, beta software, or a genuine fault can produce similar symptoms. The steps below separate those possibilities and show when to contact Nothing.

Before changing settings, note four things: when the update finished, the exact Nothing OS build, whether the phone is on stable or beta software, and whether the loss occurs during active use, while idle, or both. Write down the battery percentage and the time before each comparison. A statement such as “lost 18% overnight with the screen off from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.” is more useful than “the battery is terrible.” Note whether the phone was on Wi‑Fi, mobile data or 5G, whether Bluetooth or location services were active, and whether it was inside a case. Do not compare a day of navigation, gaming or video with a day spent mostly idle.

- Connect it to a suitable charger and leave it charging overnight.
- Use it normally for the next 2–3 days, rather than repeatedly rebooting or changing many settings.
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage at intervals and record which apps or system components are consuming power.
Nothing’s post-update instruction is specifically for increased consumption after a system update. It does not state that every case will resolve on this schedule. If drain is severe, the phone becomes inexplicably hot, or the pattern continues after the observation period, move to the diagnostic and escalation steps instead of waiting indefinitely.
Read Battery usage before changing anything
The Battery usage screen is the most useful first diagnostic because it connects the percentage loss with a consumer. Compare the listed items with what you actually did during the same period.
What to look for
- One app dominates: an app may be running background work, syncing repeatedly, or failing to sleep.
- Screen use dominates: the result may simply reflect a long, bright display session, video, navigation, or gaming.
- Broad system or radio use: look for a pattern that matches weak Wi‑Fi or mobile coverage, 5G, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, or other network searches.
- Idle loss: if the phone loses a large amount while the screen is off and use is minimal, record the time interval and the leading consumers. Idle drain is more informative than comparing two unrelated days of active use.
Take a screenshot or write down the top entries, their percentages, and the time range shown. Recheck after the same type of day; comparing a gaming day with a light-use day can make normal workload differences look like a software fault.
Look for a repeatable pattern rather than a single ranking. A navigation app may legitimately appear high after a long journey, while an unfamiliar app that remains at the top during an idle test deserves closer attention. If the screen is the largest consumer, brightness, display-on time and video may explain the result. If several radios and system processes are elevated together, reception or post-update background work may be involved.
If one app is unusually high
Update that app through its normal app-store route, restart the phone, and check Battery usage again. Nothing’s system guidance recommends keeping the phone on the latest system version and provides app troubleshooting for apps that stop unexpectedly. It does not specifically establish clearing an app’s cache or uninstalling it as a general cure for post-update battery drain, so do not treat either action as a proven fix. If the app remains the clear outlier, document its name, version, and usage before contacting the app developer or Nothing.
Do not immediately disable every background permission. A blanket change can break notifications, location sharing, wearable connections or security functions while hiding the original cause. Change one app or setting at a time, then observe it under comparable conditions.
Give the update time to finish its work
Immediately after an update, Android may re-index files, optimize applications, and recalibrate adaptive systems. Google gives a general estimate of 24–48 hours for temporary drain after a major Android update. Nothing’s Phone (3)-specific guidance is longer—2–3 days of normal use—so use that as the primary expectation for this model. Neither figure is a promise that persistent drain is normal.

During this period, avoid judging the phone from a brief percentage change or from a single overnight result. Keep your usage reasonably typical, leave the phone’s normal radios enabled unless you are deliberately testing one condition, and revisit Battery usage after comparable intervals. A temporary warm period immediately after installation can fit the same optimization phase; warmth that is unexplained, repeated during idle use or getting worse requires a different response.
Do not repeatedly factory-reset the phone during this window. A reset removes data and may force another round of app setup and synchronization, making comparisons harder. Preserve screenshots and notes first. If Nothing support later recommends a reset, follow its backup and step-by-step instructions.
Test signal and network conditions one variable at a time
Nothing says weak Wi‑Fi or SIM reception can increase transmit and receive power. It also notes that 5G can consume more because 4G remains active at the same time. A phone that behaves normally on a strong signal but drains rapidly in a weak-signal location may be spending energy maintaining connectivity rather than failing because of the update.
A practical network comparison
- Record the battery level and Battery usage at the start of a normal test period.
- Repeat similar use in a location with strong Wi‑Fi or mobile reception.
- If practical, temporarily compare a lower preferred network mode with 5G. The relevant path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Preferred network type.
- Keep the test period and workload similar, then compare idle and active loss.
For an idle comparison, leave the phone in the same place with the screen off for a defined interval. For an active comparison, repeat the same kind of browsing, calling or streaming. A change that appears only in a basement, rural area or crowded venue points toward reception. A change that follows the phone everywhere, including strong Wi‑Fi, deserves broader troubleshooting.

Do not disable connectivity that you need for calls, messages, location services, safety features, or work. The purpose is to identify whether reception is a contributor, not to create an unusable setup.
Check temperature, workload and background activity
Cold conditions
Nothing says battery use can rise in low temperatures and return toward normal when the phone warms to a normal operating environment. If the drain occurred outdoors or in a cold room, repeat the comparison at a moderate temperature before blaming the update. Avoid trying to heat the device aggressively; let it return gradually to a normal environment.
Gaming, video and other sustained loads
Gaming and video keep the display, processor and graphics hardware busy for long periods. They can increase both consumption and temperature even when the software is healthy. Compare like with like: a video session against another video session, or a similar game session against another game session. Navigation, hotspot use, camera recording and downloading large files can also combine screen, processor and radio activity, so record them when explaining a high-use day.

Background apps and radios
Nothing lists background apps and radios—including Wi‑Fi, GPS, NFC and Bluetooth searching for networks or signals—as possible contributors to heat. Use Battery usage to identify an active culprit instead of turning off every service indiscriminately. If a service is required for a watch, tracker, car connection, location feature or security function, disabling it may solve the symptom by removing the function you bought the phone to perform.
Check whether the phone is repeatedly searching for a network, reconnecting to a Bluetooth accessory or syncing an account. If Battery usage names a particular app, update it and observe again. If no individual app stands out and the loss occurs mainly in poor reception or while the phone is warm, the surrounding conditions may be more important than a single application.
Use the correct software channel and build information
Record the complete build string shown in the phone’s software information and identify whether the device is running stable software or a beta. Do not infer a build-specific bug without that information. Rollouts can vary by region, so two Phone (3) owners may not be testing the same package even if they updated on the same day.
Nothing describes the OS 5.0 Open Beta as pre-release software that may affect stability, battery life and performance. Its current OS page lists Metroid-V4.1-260814-1733 as the Phone (3) stable build required for joining that beta; enrollment rules and availability can vary by region and can change. If you are on a beta, temporary warmth or higher consumption is a documented possibility, and you should back up important data before participating. Beta observations should not be presented as proof that the stable channel has the same behavior.
For ordinary system updates, check Settings > System > System update. Nothing says updates can fix software issues and optimize performance. Its OTA guidance calls for a good network, sufficient free storage, at least 40% battery charge, and avoiding activity that interrupts installation. The 40% figure is an installation condition, not a battery-health measurement. If an OTA installation is interrupted, restart the phone and follow the official update process; do not sideload firmware or attempt a downgrade unless Nothing provides a build-specific procedure.

Nothing describes 0–35°C as the general suitable environment range for phone use. Avoid prolonged heavy use in hotter surroundings. If the phone heats while charging or operating:
- Stop gaming, video recording and other sustained workloads.
- Move to a moderate-temperature location.
- Remove the case if it is trapping heat.
- Leave the screen off for a while.
- Use the official charger recommended by Nothing for charging guidance.
- Do not continue using the phone while it is charging; ongoing processor load can add heat.
Do not put a wet tissue or other moisture against the device. If the phone remains inexplicably hot after heavy use has stopped, or heat returns during ordinary idle use, contact Nothing customer service or a designated repair center. A compatible USB‑C charger can support the overnight charging routine, but it is not a software fix and should not be advertised as improving battery health or correcting update-related drain.

Decide whether the pattern is temporary or persistent

These are practical comparison axes, not a validated diagnostic test. Update timing alone cannot prove that the update caused a defect. The strongest case for an update-related problem is a repeatable change across similar workloads and locations, with no single app or network condition explaining it.
Prepare a useful support report
When the recovery window has passed—or sooner if heat is unexplained—give Nothing enough detail to distinguish a normal workload from a fault. Include:
- Phone model and region.
- Exact Nothing OS build and whether it is stable or beta.
- Date and approximate time the update completed.
- Battery percentage at the start and end of a measured interval.
- Whether the loss occurred with the screen on, screen off, or both.
- Battery usage screenshots showing the leading consumers.
- Network conditions, including Wi‑Fi strength, 5G use and whether the behavior changes in another location.
- Ambient conditions, case use, charging setup and any unusual heat.
- Steps already attempted and whether the phone improved for any period.
Nothing directs users with persistent unexplained heating to customer service or a designated repair center. Severe drain that remains after 2–3 days also warrants contact rather than endless setting changes. Follow the support team’s official instructions for logs, backup, repair or reset; do not erase the phone before preserving the information they request.

Nothing Community includes individual Phone (3) posts describing heat and battery-life changes around updates. Users have phrased questions such as “Any one feeling this battery drain issue?” and “Any fixes or settings changes that helped reduce the heating?” Those posts show how owners describe symptoms, but they are anecdotal: they do not establish how widespread a problem is or prove that a particular build caused it.
Android Central reported reduced heating and battery drain in certain scenarios after a Phone (3) OS 3.5 update. That report concerns that specific release and cannot establish what a different build will do on your device. There is no published Phone (3)-specific statistic in the official material that quantifies post-update drain across the model.
A concise decision path
- Identify the context: record update date, build, software channel, idle versus active drain and temperature.
- Inspect the evidence: use Settings > Battery > Battery usage and identify whether one app, the screen, radios or broad system activity dominates.
- Run Nothing’s routine: restart with the screen off, charge overnight and use normally for 2–3 days.

Should I switch off 5G to fix the drain?
Use it as a controlled test, not a universal fix. Nothing says 5G can use more power because 4G remains active. Compare similar use with another preferred network type at Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Preferred network type, while preserving connectivity you need.
Is battery drain on the OS 5.0 Open Beta expected?
Nothing describes the Open Beta as pre-release software that may affect stability, battery life and performance. Back up important data, record the beta build and compare behavior with the beta’s documented expectations; do not assume stable-channel users have the same issue.
Can clearing an app cache fix post-update battery drain?

Nothing states a general suitable environment range of 0–35°C. Move the phone to a moderate-temperature location, stop heavy use, remove a heat-trapping case and leave the screen off if it becomes hot.
Should I buy a different charger?
Nothing recommends its official charger in heating guidance and overnight charging in its post-update routine. A compatible USB-C charger can support charging, but no charger is established as a fix for software-caused drain or as a way to improve battery health.
When should I contact Nothing?
