That is guidance, not a guarantee that severe drain is harmless. While you monitor it, check Battery usage, review background-app settings, and use Safe mode to test whether a downloaded app is involved.
1. Give the phone time, but monitor the drain
Motorola says to use the device for 3–5 days after a software update to get optimal battery life. This is Motorola Support US guidance; the page does not give a publication date or promise that every phone will recover within that period. If the drain is extreme, disruptive, or accompanied by erratic charging or shutdowns, continue with the checks below rather than assuming it is normal. Motorola’s charging troubleshooting checklist.

2. Find what is using the battery
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Look for unusually high use by an app, the display, a connection, or another feature. Tap an entry to see any available management options.
- If you do not see that exact path, search Settings for “Battery.” Some models or software versions label the screen Usage details, and a full-device usage view may be optional.
Identify the likely source before changing settings; broadly disabling features can interfere with notifications or normal use. Motorola’s instructions and model variations are described in its battery-life guidance.

Keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled if your phone offers those controls. On supported models, Motorola’s Manage background apps settings include Smart use, Always allow, and Don’t allow. Restrict an app selectively: doing so can delay its updates, syncing, or notifications until you open it. Keep calling, messaging, health, safety, and other time-sensitive apps allowed when you rely on them.

Older Android or Motorola software may use a different path, such as Apps & notifications > Special app access > Battery optimization. Menu names and availability vary, so use Settings search or the user guide for your exact model. Motorola battery-life settings.
4. Use Safe mode to check for a downloaded app
- Start Safe mode using the button procedure supported by your Motorola model; the exact steps can vary.
- Use the phone and observe whether the fast drain changes. Safe mode disables downloaded apps and widgets, so treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent way to use the phone.
- Restart normally. If battery life improves in Safe mode, remove recently downloaded apps one at a time and check the result after each removal.

5. Reduce avoidable power use while you test
- Lower screen brightness and shorten the screen timeout.
- Use Wi-Fi when available; turn off Bluetooth or GPS when you are not using them.
- Use Battery Saver when charge is low.
- Consider whether power-intensive activities such as video recording or playback, photography, music, or live wallpapers coincide with the drain.
Turning off sync indiscriminately is not a neutral fix: it can delay notifications and updates. Change it only if you understand that trade-off. Motorola’s battery-life tips cover these general power-saving measures.

6. Check battery condition if readings or charging seem abnormal
On supported phones, open Device Help > Learn about my device > Hardware test > Battery to view the available battery information, including current power, condition, temperature, and charging status. Availability and labels may differ by model. Motorola also describes battery calibration for inconsistent battery-level readings, quick discharge, erratic charging, or sudden shutdowns and reboots. Follow the instructions for your exact model; calibration is not established as a guaranteed fix for ordinary post-update drain. 7. Decide whether to adjust, wait, or contact support

Motorola recommends using the charger and cable supplied with the device and notes that charging method and temperature affect charging performance. Its guidance does not establish that buying a generic charger fixes battery drain after an update.
