Start by matching your PC with the current Steam listing for Backrooms: Impending Doom, then identify whether the problem is a failure before the game window, a crash during startup, or low frame rates after you get in. The English listing specifies Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, a GTX 1060 3 GB or Radeon RX 580, DirectX 12, and 5 GB of available storage. It targets 1080p on Low at 60 FPS and strongly recommends an SSD. Those are store requirements and a target, not a guarantee that every PC at the minimum will launch or maintain 60 FPS.
First, identify which problem you actually have
“Crashes,” “low FPS,” and “won’t launch” require different evidence. Do not start by changing a dozen settings: you will not know which change mattered, and you may make a reversible performance issue harder to diagnose.

| What you see | Useful description | First comparison |
|---|---|---|
| No game window appears | Steam shows the game as running briefly, or nothing visibly happens | Operating system, CPU, GPU, graphics API capability, memory, and free storage versus the current Steam listing |
| Window appears, then closes | The game reaches a logo, menu, or loading screen before exiting | Record the exact point of failure and any message; then re-check the requirements and contact the developer if general checks do not help |
| Game runs but feels slow | Low or unstable frame rate, usually after entering the game | Test reduced resolution and video quality one change at a time |
A PC that is at or close to minimum requirements can still have performance or launch problems. Steam Support explicitly advises comparing your machine with the store requirements rather than treating the minimum as a promise of stable operation.
Check the current Steam requirements before changing anything
Backrooms: Impending Doom is listed as a single-player early-access game. The English Steam listing gives the following minimum configuration and target:

| Item | English Steam listing | How to use it in triage |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and meets the listed version requirement. |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | Compare the exact CPU model, not just the brand or advertised clock speed. |
| Graphics card | NVIDIA GTX 1060 3 GB or AMD Radeon RX 580 | Check the exact GPU model and its dedicated video memory. |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | Verify that the system and GPU support the API named on the current listing. |
| Storage | 5 GB available | Check free space on the drive where Steam installs the game. |
| Performance target | 1080p, Low settings, 60 FPS target | Treat this as the store’s stated target, not an independent benchmark or guarantee. |
| Drive type | SSD strongly recommended | Use this as a storage recommendation; it is not documented as a crash or FPS cure. |
Localized Steam results have shown conflicting values for memory and DirectX. One Japanese result reports a different memory figure and DirectX 11, while other notes also differ from the English result. Do not combine those variants into a single “official” specification. Open the current store page in your region and use the values displayed there, especially for memory and graphics API.
How to collect your PC’s baseline
- Press
Windowsand typeSystem Information. Open the result and note the Windows edition, system type, processor, and installed physical memory. - Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. Select Performance, then GPU, and record the model and dedicated GPU memory. If your PC has more than one GPU, note which one is active when the game is started. - In File Explorer, right-click the drive used by Steam and choose Properties. Record available space; the listing requires 5 GB available, so leave additional headroom for Windows and other applications rather than filling the drive to its limit.
- Check the current Steam page again for its memory and DirectX entries. Keep a screenshot or written copy with the date, because early-access listings and localized pages can change.
If any core item is below the current requirement, treat that as the first explanation to investigate. If everything is at or just above the requirement, that still does not establish that the game should launch reliably; Steam cautions that systems at or near the requirements may experience launch or performance issues.
If Backrooms: Impending Doom will not launch
Keep this path diagnostic. The available evidence does not establish a title-specific launch option, driver version, Windows setting, file-integrity procedure, or known-issues workaround for this game. Avoid presenting a generic PC tweak as a verified repair.

1. Classify the failure precisely
- Immediate failure: Steam changes to “Running” and then returns to “Play” without a visible window.
- Early startup crash: a window or logo appears and closes before the menu.
- Loading crash: the game reaches a menu or loading screen and exits when entering a scene.
- Error message: Windows or the game displays text, a code, or a missing-component notice.
Write down the exact wording, the time it occurs, and whether the result changes after a second attempt. “It crashes” is not enough for a support request because each timing pattern points to a different diagnostic path.

2. Compare the machine with the listing
Use the baseline procedure above and compare every item, including the graphics API and free space. A graphics card that resembles the listed model but has less dedicated memory is not an exact match. Likewise, a 64-bit-capable processor does not by itself prove that the installed Windows edition meets the listing.
3. Make only reversible observations
Close other applications that visibly consume CPU, memory, or GPU resources and try the same launch once more, noting what changed. This is an observation, not a game-specific fix. Do not delete files, edit the registry, add launch parameters, or replace Windows components based solely on generic advice; no such remedy is established for this title in the available material.
4. Preserve the evidence
- Exact Steam display name and the date you checked the requirements.
- Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit.
- CPU model, GPU model and dedicated memory, installed memory, and free storage.
- Where the failure occurs: before a window, at a logo, in a menu, or while loading.
- Exact error text, with a screenshot if possible.
- Whether the result is consistent or intermittent.
If those general checks do not resolve the failure, Steam Support recommends contacting the developer. Include the evidence above rather than reporting only that the game “doesn’t work.” The available sources do not identify a verified developer-owned known-issues page, so use the current support contact linked from the game’s Steam presence and follow its requested format.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the game crashes after it starts
A crash after a logo or menu is different from a failure to create a window. Record the last visible screen, whether the crash happens at the same action each time, and whether an error appears. Then re-check the requirements, because a machine near the minimum can still have launch or performance problems even when the game opens.

Do not describe a graphics-setting change as a crash fix unless the crash actually stops and remains stopped after repeated launches. The available information supports settings changes as a way to test frame rate, not as a confirmed remedy for crashes. If the crash persists after the baseline checks, send the developer the timing, message, hardware comparison, and reproduction steps.
How to test low FPS without losing track of the cause
Steam Support states that changing video options can increase FPS, while also saying it does not support manual changes to a game’s video options. Use the following as a controlled, reversible experiment rather than a promised Backrooms: Impending Doom fix.
1. Establish a repeatable starting point
Choose the same location or menu each time you compare settings. Note the resolution, quality preset, approximate frame-rate behavior, and whether the problem is constant or appears only during particular scenes. No independent benchmark or title-specific FPS measurement was identified, so do not turn the Steam target into a measured result.
2. Lower resolution first
- Open the game’s video or graphics settings.
- Reduce the display resolution from your current value and apply it.
- Repeat the same movement or scene and compare the behavior.
- Restore the original value if there is no meaningful change.
A change in resolution that improves smoothness indicates that rendering load is relevant; it does not prove which internal option is responsible.

- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
3. Reduce overall video quality
- Return to the graphics menu and lower the overall quality setting, if the game provides a preset.
- Apply the change and repeat the same comparison.
- Change only one additional option at a time if you need more information.
- Keep a short record of each setting and the observed result so you can undo changes.
The source material does not identify a particular option as unusually expensive in this game. Therefore, do not claim that shadows, textures, effects, or another named setting is the known cause unless the developer publishes that information.
4. Interpret the result
| Observation | What it supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Lower resolution helps | Rendering load is contributing to the observed slowdown | That the game will hold 60 FPS everywhere |
| Lower quality helps | One or more quality settings are affecting the workload | Which individual option is responsible |
| No setting change helps | The cause may not be adjustable through the tested video options | A specific driver, Windows, or game-file cause |
| Performance varies by scene | The workload changes with what is being rendered | A title-wide average FPS value |
Because the listing’s 60 FPS figure is a 1080p/Low target, compare like with like when you describe your result. Say “the game is below the listed 1080p Low target on my system” rather than claiming that the target is guaranteed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage and the SSD recommendation
The listing requires 5 GB of available storage and strongly recommends an SSD. If the game is installed on a mechanical hard drive, an SSD is a reasonable storage upgrade to consider, particularly if you already need faster general storage. However, the listing does not say that an SSD resolves crashes or guarantees a higher frame rate. Treat it as a recommendation aligned with installation and loading behavior, not as a proven repair.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check compatibility before buying an internal SSD
- Confirm whether your PC has a free 2.5-inch bay, an M.2 slot, or another compatible mounting position.
- Check the connector and interface supported by the motherboard or laptop.
- Verify physical clearance, especially in a laptop or compact desktop.
- Confirm that the drive will have enough capacity after reserving space for Windows, applications, and the game.
- Back up important files before moving or reinstalling a game.
These checks prevent an incompatible purchase; they do not establish that storage is the cause of your particular crash or FPS issue.

When to stop troubleshooting locally
Contact the developer when the game still fails after you have compared the current requirements, documented the symptom timing, and tested only reversible video changes for an FPS problem. Steam’s support guidance points users to the developer when its general advice does not solve a launch issue.
Send a concise report containing:
- Your Windows edition and 64-bit status.
- CPU, GPU, dedicated GPU memory, installed memory, and the drive’s free space.
- The current Steam requirement values you used, including any memory or DirectX discrepancy you saw between localized pages.
- The exact failure stage and error text.
- Steps that reproduce the problem.
- For low FPS, the resolution and quality settings tested and the observed change, without inventing an average FPS number.
- Whether the game is installed on an SSD or hard drive.
This gives the developer actionable context and makes clear which observations are yours rather than claims about a universal fix.
Claims to avoid when advising other players
- Do not call the English 1080p/Low/60 FPS entry a benchmark or promise.
- Do not silently merge the English and Japanese Steam requirement variants; re-check the current listing.
- Do not say an SSD is a guaranteed cure for crashing or low FPS.
- Do not present a generic video-setting change as a verified title-specific repair.
- Do not invent a driver version, launch command, file-integrity remedy, or Windows setting as developer-endorsed when none is documented here.
- Do not infer a crash cause from a PC merely meeting the minimum requirements.
A compact decision path
- Does the game fail before a window? Compare Windows, CPU, GPU, API, memory, and storage with the current Steam listing and record any message.
- Does it close during startup or loading? Record the exact stage and reproduce it once or twice without making unrelated system changes.
- Does it run but have low FPS? Lower resolution, then overall quality, changing one setting at a time and comparing the same scene.
- Is the PC on a hard drive? Treat an SSD as an optional upgrade supported by the listing’s recommendation, not as a guaranteed fix.
- Still failing? Contact the developer with the complete hardware and symptom record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does meeting the minimum requirements guarantee that Backrooms: Impending Doom will launch?
No. Steam Support says a machine at or near the listed requirements may still experience performance or launch issues.
Should I use DirectX 11 or DirectX 12?
The English Steam listing names DirectX 12, while a Japanese result reports DirectX 11 and different memory information. Check the current listing for your region instead of combining the localized variants.
Will installing the game on an SSD fix crashes?
An SSD is strongly recommended on the listing, but the listing does not document it as a cure for crashes or a guaranteed FPS increase.
What should I send the developer?
Send your Windows version and 64-bit status, CPU, GPU and dedicated memory, installed memory, free storage, exact failure stage or error text, reproduction steps, and the video settings tested for an FPS problem.
