If audio shifts out of sync after a cut or rearrangement, first check whether the mismatch stays about the same or grows over time. A steady offset usually points to clips or tracks moving independently; align the affected material to a shared event, then adjust ripple behavior or track Sync Lock so later edits move the intended tracks together. If the error increases over time, investigate recording latency and sample-rate settings instead: a fixed shift cannot correct a difference in playback speed.
First identify what kind of sync problem you have
Before shifting anything, save a recoverable copy of the project or sequence. In Audacity, Duplicate places a copy on a new track at the same timeline position; Undo can reverse recent edits in the current session. In other editors, use the equivalent duplicate or save-as option.

Compare a clear event near the beginning of the affected material with another one later. A clap, plosive consonant, slate, or visible mouth movement can serve as a reference. Check around cut points too, because a problem limited to particular edits may come from track selection or ripple scope rather than the whole recording.

- About the same offset throughout: suspect a clip or track that moved independently. Re-align the affected section against a known shared event.
- The offset grows over time: suspect different recording or playback speeds, including a sample-rate mismatch. Moving the whole clip by one amount will not fix progressive drift.
- Only some joins are wrong: inspect the affected edit boundaries and which tracks were selected, linked, locked, or included in the operation.
These patterns help narrow the cause, but do not prove it. Confirm against the project, source media, and the controls available in your editor version.

Understand what the edit did to the timeline
A non-ripple deletion removes the selected material but leaves later material where it was, creating a gap. A ripple deletion closes the gap by moving later material earlier. The important detail is how widely the ripple applies: an operation on one track can change its timing relative to other tracks, while an all-track operation can preserve their alignment.
Audacity: choose whether to leave a gap or close it
Audacity’s Basic audio editing guide describes “Leave a gap” as keeping other material in place, preserving timing across tracks. “Close gap (ripple)” moves later audio back. If you want to close the gap across all tracks, the manual documents Ctrl+DEL (or Ctrl+BACKSPACE) for ripple deletion across every track; Shift+DEL closes the gap per track, which can cause tracks to move out of alignment with each other. Confirm shortcuts in your installed version.

The first deletion prompts for a behavior, and that choice becomes the default; you can change it in preferences. Check the selected tracks and the intended scope before making a run of edits.
Premiere Pro: use Sync Lock for tracks that should follow edits
In Premiere Pro, Sync Lock controls whether tracks not directly included in an operation move with timeline insertions, ripple deletes, or ripple trims. Adobe’s Sync Lock guidance explains that tracks directly included in the edit shift regardless of Sync Lock; other tracks shift only when Sync Lock is enabled.

- Closed ear design provides comfort and outstanding reduction of external noises
- 9.8 foot cord ends in gold plated plug and it is not detachable; 1/4 inch adapter included
- Folds up for storage or travel in provided soft case
- Frequency Response: 10 Hertz to 20 kilohertz
Enable Sync Lock on the audio and video tracks that should follow the edit, and inspect the track-level icons before editing. Track locking is a separate choice: locking a track prevents changes to it, while Sync Lock determines whether an otherwise editable track follows ripple-type changes. Adobe’s guidance was updated January 21, 2026; exact interface details can vary by Premiere release and region.
For other editors, check the operation’s scope
Do not assume that “ripple delete” affects every track in every application. Check the editor’s current manual for track selection, sync-lock or track-lock behavior, and whether ripple operations affect one track, selected tracks, or all tracks.

Re-align material that has already shifted
Find a reliable shared event and zoom in around it. Move only the affected clip or segment until the event lines up, rather than shifting the entire project by guesswork. In Audacity, clips can be dragged by their headers, and waveform spikes can help locate a clap or knock, as described in its editing guide. Preview before editing and use a precise selection when trimming or splitting.

In Premiere Pro, you can manually drag clips into place. For separately recorded clips, the Timeline Synchronize command can align by Clip Start, Clip End, Timecode, Clip Marker, or an audio track channel where applicable. See Adobe’s Synchronize clips in the Timeline panel guidance, updated October 20, 2025. When audio and video were recorded separately, use a shared reference such as timecode, a clap or marker, or a suitable audio channel; manual alignment is another option.

After aligning one point, inspect and listen at another point farther along. If the alignment is correct at the first point but wrong later, return to the drift diagnosis instead of continuing to shift the clip.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the sync error grows over time, investigate recording and sample rates
A constant recording delay and progressive drift are different problems. Audacity’s recording troubleshooting FAQ says Audacity applies recording-latency correction automatically because computer overdubs are not recorded at the exact instant the performer responds; further adjustment may be needed. Latency correction addresses a delay, not a continuing speed difference.
The same FAQ warns that sample-rate mismatches between Audacity, the operating system, and the sound device can make tracks play and record at different speeds. Check the source track rate, project rate, and device or OS settings. Match rates as needed, and resample existing tracks to the project rate when required. Keep an untouched copy before changing settings or resampling originals.
Verify the fix before exporting
- Play from before the first affected cut through the end of the relevant section.
- Listen around every edited join, and compare clear sync references near the beginning and end of a long recording.
- Where video is involved, watch a visible cue such as mouth movement as well as listening.
- If one join remains wrong, correct that region rather than shifting the whole track.
- Check the rendered or exported playback as well as the timeline preview when the result is being delivered.
If the mismatch changes across the recording, revisit sample-rate or speed causes; if it remains constant, check for an independently moved clip or a ripple operation with the wrong scope.
