Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the audio and picture drift farther apart the longer you watch a YouTube playlist, first check whether it happens with one video or across several, then compare another browser or device. A mismatch that repeats at the same point in one upload is likely in the video itself; a problem limited to one playback setup is more likely local. YouTube does not publish a universal one-step fix for progressive sync drift, so the reliable approach is to isolate the source in order.
First, identify what kind of delay you have
“Audio out of sync” can describe two different problems. In ordinary playlist playback, sync drift means the sound and picture stop matching within the video. In a live broadcast, latency means you are behind the event; that is not necessarily an audio/video sync error.

- Constant offset: The sound is already early or late when playback begins and stays about that way.
- Progressive drift: Playback starts in sync, but the mismatch grows over time.
- One-upload problem: One video is out of sync at the same point across devices, while other videos play normally.
- Playback-setup problem: Several videos are affected on one browser or device, but not on another.
- Buffering or stutter: Picture or sound pauses, jumps, or degrades as well as appearing out of sync.
These patterns are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular cause. YouTube’s public guidance covers general playback troubleshooting, upload-track mismatch, and live latency, but does not identify a universal cause or guaranteed fix for drift during long viewing.

1. Pause, resume, or reload once
Pause and resume, or reload the video once, then check whether sync returns. Note whether it starts wrong or drifts gradually, whether the sound leads or trails, and whether the same thing happens on every video. This is a quick diagnostic, not a YouTube-prescribed cure for progressive drift.

2. Restart and update the playback setup
- Close and reopen the YouTube app or browser. If the problem continues, restart the device.
- Install available updates for the browser, YouTube app, and device software.
- On desktop, close unused tabs and temporarily disable extensions. To check whether an extension is involved, test in an incognito window with extensions disabled; YouTube’s video-error guidance recommends this kind of extension check, including for ad blockers.
- Play the same video in another supported browser or on another device.
If another browser or device plays the same section correctly, focus on the original playback setup. That comparison does not by itself identify a specific extension, driver, or device component as the cause. YouTube’s video-error troubleshooting steps include restarting, updating, checking extensions, and trying other playback options.
3. Check the connection and playback quality if video also stutters
If the stream buffers or playback is uneven, try another connection and lower the playback quality temporarily. YouTube lists these approximate sustained speeds for playback: 20 Mbps for 4K, 5 Mbps for 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 1.1 Mbps for 480p, and 0.7 Mbps for 360p. They are recommendations for those playback resolutions—not guarantees against audio/video drift. You can also open Stats for Nerds to inspect playback information. See YouTube’s connection and playback-quality guidance.

4. Test browser rendering only when there is a rendering symptom
If the issue is confined to one browser, compare another browser first. For a visual symptom such as a green picture with audible sound, YouTube suggests turning off hardware acceleration in Chrome and updating graphics drivers. Treat this as a reversible rendering-path test, not a general sync remedy: the guidance addresses the green-screen symptom, not progressive drift. Restore the setting if playback gets worse. YouTube’s green-screen troubleshooting guidance covers this case.
When the upload itself is out of sync
Play the same upload at the same timestamp on another browser or device. If the mismatch repeats at that point across setups, a local playback fix is unlikely to help. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance says the audio and video track durations should match and recommends correcting the tracks in editing software before upload. Report the timestamp to the uploader or look for another upload rather than repeatedly changing settings on your device. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting page covers track-duration problems.

If you mean a live YouTube broadcast
Being behind a live event is different from hearing audio that fails to match the picture. YouTube explains that lower latency leaves the player with less read-ahead buffer, which can increase buffering; network congestion can also delay a stream even when the connection can sustain its average bitrate. Viewers generally cannot change the creator’s encoder-latency setting. For background, see YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance.
For creators, test with representative audio and motion, check stream health, and monitor audio/video quality. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom for live streaming; that is a creator-side upload recommendation, not a viewer download target. Its live encoder settings and bitrate guidance explains the streaming setup.
