A steady gap usually calls for a one-time audio timing adjustment; growing drift points to sample-rate, device-clock or recording-timing issues. Also separate a local OBS recording uploaded later from a prerecorded file played through OBS into YouTube Live: the troubleshooting path differs, and YouTube’s published encoder guidance is for live streams, not a documented special fix for ordinary uploaded videos.
Identify which YouTube workflow you mean
- Record, then upload: OBS saves a local video file that you later upload to YouTube as a regular video. Start by checking the local file; the YouTube live-encoder guide does not establish that YouTube automatically repairs or causes sync errors in uploaded recordings.
- Play a recording through OBS into YouTube Live: A media file is played into OBS and sent through a live encoder workflow. Test that path separately, using representative audio and movement; YouTube recommends testing live encoder settings before a broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide does not establish a universal fix for prerecorded material sent as a live stream.
Do not assume the platform is responsible until you compare the local output with what YouTube plays back.

Determine whether the mismatch is fixed or progressive
Compare a clear event near the beginning and end
Use a visible action paired with a distinct sound, such as a clap or a spoken consonant. Check the same kind of event near the start and near the end. Note whether the audio leads the picture or trails it, and whether the gap changes. This is a practical diagnostic, not a source-specified timing threshold.

- The gap gets larger or smaller: Treat it as drift. A one-time offset may align one moment while leaving the rest wrong, so check clocks, sample rates and recording performance.
Compare the local recording with YouTube playback
Play the saved file locally and compare the same events with the YouTube version. If the local recording is already out of sync, focus on OBS capture and recording. If it is aligned locally but differs on YouTube, keep the file and comparison as evidence and test the delivery path. For a live encoder workflow, run a representative private test before relying on it publicly.

Fix a constant audio offset
For future OBS output
Once you know whether sound leads or trails, adjust the timing of the relevant audio source in OBS and make a short test recording. OBS control labels can vary by version and setup; confirm the correct source and control in your installed version rather than applying an unverified number. The third-party diagnostic distinguishes a fixed offset from progressive drift and recommends correcting the relevant source timing for a steady mismatch. Read the diagnostic explanation.
For a file that already exists
Shift the audio track in a video editor, then check the beginning, middle and end before exporting. Adjust only the amount needed to bring a clear sound into alignment with its visible event. Do not use a fixed shift as a cure for a gap that changes over time.

Investigate audio that drifts over time
- Match sample rates. Check the selected sample rate in OBS and the rates used by the audio devices. Align them, then record a fresh test. Sample-rate mismatch is one possible cause to investigate, not a guaranteed explanation.
- Consider independent device clocks. If separate USB audio devices provide audio sources, their clocks may drift relative to one another. For a setup where that is relevant, routing sources through a common audio interface is one possible approach, not a required or guaranteed fix. - Inspect OBS statistics. Look for skipped or missed frames while recording. If OBS reports performance trouble, reduce scene complexity or other system load and retest. OBS’s performance guidance discusses simplifying scenes and limiting a game’s frame rate to reduce rendering and encoding load; missed frames do not prove that every sync problem is performance-related. - Repeat the beginning-to-end comparison. Record a fresh sample and check whether the gap still changes. Avoid compensating for drift with a single offset.
Choose a recording container that suits recovery and editing
OBS recommends MKV for recordings because an interrupted recording is less likely to corrupt the entire file. If you need MP4, OBS offers File → Remux Recordings and automatic remuxing. The OBS formats guide also describes fragmented MP4 or MOV as possible options for compatible upload and common editing workflows. Container conversion changes the file workflow; it is not established as a repair for a fixed offset or progressive drift.

Troubleshoot by symptom
