To fix audio out of sync in a YouTube stream running on Linode, first find where the mismatch begins: in the capture or encoder, on a relay or transcode stage, during YouTube ingestion, or only in viewer playback. Compare the encoder output and a local recording with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and the stream as viewers receive it. Then correct the stage where the fault first appears; Linode is not necessarily the cause.
Find where the audio and video stop matching
Before changing settings, establish the signal path. For example, OBS might encode on a local computer and send the stream through a Linode relay, encoding might happen on the Linode instance, or Linode might host another part of the setup. The appropriate fix depends on that architecture; no Linode-specific cause or server setting is established here.

Compare the same event at each stage
- Make a short test. Include a clear visual event paired with a sharp sound, such as a hand clap. This is a diagnostic technique, not proof of any particular cause.
- Check the encoder output. Watch and listen to the encoder’s own output, and inspect a local archive or recording if available.
- Check YouTube’s preview. Compare the same event in the Live Control Room preview.
- Check viewer playback. If possible, compare playback on more than one device and network.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder’s appearance and sound, encoder errors and CPU load, the local archive, and the outbound connection. If the local output is already out of sync, investigate sources and encoding first. If it is clean but the YouTube preview is not, inspect ingestion and any relay or transcode stage. If the issue affects only some viewers, compare their devices and networks before changing encoder settings. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide outlines these checks.
Record what the mismatch does
For each comparison, note whether audio leads or lags video, whether the offset stays roughly constant or changes over time, and which stages or viewers show it. A steady offset points to a different investigation than a mismatch that grows or appears only on certain playback paths. Do not pick a correction until you know which pattern you have.

Inspect the encoder and its audio sources
If the mismatch is present in the encoder output or local archive, check the path feeding the encoder before changing YouTube settings.
- Confirm the encoder software is current and that the intended audio and video sources are routed into it.
- Review encoder errors and CPU load while reproducing the problem.
- Listen to and watch the encoder output, then compare it with the local archive. A problem already present there directs attention to the sources, routing, processing, or encoder configuration.
If you use OBS Studio and the offset is consistent, OBS exposes a per-source audio sync offset. Select the affected source and measure the mismatch before changing that control. The OBS API documentation establishes that the setting exists; it does not provide the correct value for your stream. Apply an offset only after determining whether audio leads or lags and by how much. OBS Studio’s source API reference documents the control.

Use YouTube’s stream-health messages as evidence
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the health indicator and its timestamped messages. YouTube’s error guide covers incorrect stream formats and audio configuration issues, including codec and configuration requirements for the cited ingestion setup. Compare any reported error with the encoder’s actual settings, then make the correction that addresses that message. A format or audio warning does not, by itself, prove that sample rate caused an audio/video sync fault. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.

Check the route from your encoder to YouTube
If the encoder output is synchronized but the problem appears later, examine the connection and each relay or transcode stage in the path. In particular, identify whether Linode is forwarding an already-encoded stream or changing it; do not apply a server-side encoding fix unless that server actually encodes or transforms the stream.
- Run an outbound upload test from the system that sends the stream to YouTube.
- Check that the stream’s total bitrate fits the available upload capacity, accounting for other traffic sharing the connection.
- Test with a representative stream and monitor it throughout transmission.
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and notes that shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to the streamer. Its streaming tips and live-streaming tips provide guidance on testing, bandwidth, and monitoring.

Test the complete chain before the next live event
Run a pre-event test using representative motion and audio, and check the encoder output, any local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and viewer playback. Keep monitoring audio and video during transmission. If you change a setting, repeat the comparisons: a change that improves one stage can expose a problem farther downstream. YouTube recommends pre-event testing, checking the preview, ensuring sufficient upload bandwidth, and monitoring the stream.
