How to Fix Audio Drifting Out of Sync in an Always-On YouTube Podcast Stream

If your YouTube podcast stream starts in sync but the audio gradually slips ahead of or behind the video, a fixed audio-delay setting is unlikely to solve the underlying problem. First find out whether the drift is in OBS’s recording, the actual YouTube stream, monitoring only, or an uploaded archive; then check sample rates, independent device clocks, and OBS performance. A steady gap is a different fault from one that grows over time.

First locate where the drift happens

Do not assume YouTube is responsible just because viewers notice the problem there. Compare the OBS output with what the audience actually hears and sees, and check again after the stream has run long enough for the reported symptom to appear. There is no single standard test duration: make the test sustained enough to reproduce the onset you observe.

  1. Make or inspect an OBS recording. Check audio and video near the beginning, then later in the recording. This helps determine whether the fault is already present in OBS’s output.
  2. Check the audience-facing YouTube stream or archive. Compare the same moments against the OBS output. If only local monitoring sounds wrong, do not treat that as proof the stream itself is out of sync.
  3. Classify the change over time. Note whether the gap stays about the same or grows as the stream runs.

Keep the comparison consistent: use the same spoken words or other clear audio cues at the beginning and later point, and compare them with visible action such as a mouth movement. Monitoring, recording, live playback, and archive playback are distinct paths; a fault in one does not establish a fault in all of them.

Identify a fixed offset or progressive drift

What you observe What it suggests What to investigate
The audio is early or late by roughly the same amount throughout. A stable latency or fixed offset. Measure the gap and adjust sync in the relevant source or output path.
The audio begins in sync, then the gap increases over time. An accumulating timing problem; a constant offset alone will not correct it. Check sample-rate alignment, device clocks, and output timing.
Only OBS monitoring sounds delayed or increasingly wrong. A monitoring-path issue is possible; stream or recording output may differ. Check the actual recording or audience-facing output before changing program sync.
The source and live stream appear fine, but an uploaded video or archive is out of sync. An upload or file-specific issue may be involved. Compare the source file and YouTube playback; check whether audio and video track durations match.

A measured, fixed offset can be corrected with a fixed sync adjustment in the path where it occurs. Do not keep changing a static delay to chase a gap that continues to grow. Offset values recommended for a particular capture device are not universal settings; use a value measured on your own setup.

Check OBS and device sample rates

Compare OBS’s audio sample-rate setting with the configured rate for each audio device in the signal path. YouTube Live’s configuration guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended audio sample rates and flags mismatched rates between primary and backup streams. These checks are useful, but a mismatch is not proof that every progressive-drift problem has the same cause.

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Audio and note the selected sample rate.
  2. Check the audio device or interface configuration in the operating system or the device’s own control software.
  3. Align OBS and the devices to a rate supported by the setup, such as 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, rather than leaving one part of the chain at a different rate.
  4. If you use primary and backup feeds, make sure their audio rates match.
  5. Run another sustained test and compare early and later points in the output.

Changing the rate may require closing and reopening an application or restarting a device before the new configuration takes effect. Follow the device maker’s instructions for its controls; labels and steps vary. YouTube’s audio-rate recommendations are live-stream configuration guidance, not a guarantee that changing this setting alone will cure drift.

Investigate separate device clocks

When audio comes from separate USB, capture, or other audio devices, each device may rely on its own clock. Two devices can display the same nominal sample rate yet still fail to run in precisely the same timing relationship over a long session. If your tests point to drift between independent devices, try consolidating the relevant audio sources through one suitable audio interface or common routing path. This is setup-dependent, not a guaranteed fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only consider buying or changing hardware after the software and output checks point to independent clock domains. Any interface must have the inputs, connection type, and routing your sources require. There is no single interface model or input count that suits every podcast setup.

Separate monitoring from the stream output

Listen to or inspect the actual OBS recording and audience-facing stream, not only headphones fed by OBS monitoring. An OBS forum discussion describes a scenario in which monitoring follows a device clock while other output follows OBS’s clock, with the monitor buffer expanding rather than being resampled. That is one contributor’s explanation of a reported monitoring problem, not an official universal diagnosis.

If monitoring alone is wrong, test the monitor path separately: mute or reroute the affected monitor source, then reset monitoring and compare again. Treat these as scenario-specific workarounds, not universal fixes. Avoid changing the program output delay unless the recording or audience-facing stream has the same fault.

Check OBS Stats and network symptoms

Open OBS’s View > Stats window while streaming and check for missed or skipped frames and dropped frames. OBS explains that dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate, causing video frames to be dropped. This is a network or encoding-performance diagnostic path; it does not, by itself, establish that audio clocks are drifting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If OBS reports dropped frames, follow OBS’s network troubleshooting guidance and investigate whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.
  • Lowering bitrate or changing network conditions may address connection-related frame drops, but it does not necessarily fix a clock-timing problem.
  • If frame indicators are healthy but the audio gap grows, continue investigating rates, devices, and output timing rather than diagnosing drift from the network alone.

Handle an archive or upload separately

If the live output is in sync but an uploaded video or archive is not, compare the original source file with YouTube playback. Check whether the audio and video track durations match. YouTube Help recommends this check for uploaded videos whose audio and video are out of sync, and lists AAC-LC and 44.1 or 48 kHz among upload audio settings. This upload guidance is not a general live-encoder repair.
