How to Fix Audio Drift on a 24/7 YouTube Radio Livestream

First find out whether the audio/video gap is constant or grows over time, and whether it is already present in the encoder’s local output or appears only in YouTube playback. Those patterns point to different causes; there is no universal OBS setting or FFmpeg flag that fixes every 24/7 stream. Measure at multiple points, check YouTube’s timestamped stream-health messages and your encoder diagnostics, then change one thing at a time and retest for a representative duration.

Identify the kind of sync problem

“Audio drift” can describe several different symptoms. Before changing settings, record what happens at a known starting point and at later points in the broadcast.

  • Fixed offset: Audio leads or lags by roughly the same amount at the start and later. Investigate a start-time or processing delay in the chain.
  • Growing offset: The gap becomes larger over time. Investigate continuing timing differences, timestamps, resampling, or clocks used by separate audio and video sources. A one-time delay cannot establish a rate correction.
  • Intermittent sync changes: The gap changes suddenly or sync breaks around interruptions. Compare the change with encoder logs and timestamped YouTube health messages.
  • Playback-specific delay: The local encoded output appears synchronized, but YouTube playback does not. Check the delivered stream and compare playback on another device or player before changing the source.

For a stream with visible content, use the same visible event and its sound as a reference at each check. If the channel mostly displays a static image, use any synchronized visual cues available, or inspect the local encoded stream and playback statistics. Note whether audio leads or lags and estimate the gap; the direction matters when assessing a change.

Compare the local output with YouTube playback

Listen to or watch the encoder’s local output and the YouTube stream. If the local output is already progressively out of sync, focus first on source timing, encoder timestamps, or clocks shared by different devices. If the apparent problem is only in YouTube playback, inspect the stream sent to YouTube, its Live Control Room health messages, and another playback device or player before changing the source. Viewer buffering and playback can make a live presentation appear different from the encoded source, so verify where the symptom first appears rather than assuming either side is responsible.

Read the available diagnostics

FFplay synchronization statistics

FFplay’s -stats output includes the current stream position, duration, codec parameters, and audio/video synchronization drift. Record the reported drift near the start and at later points. It is diagnostic information, not an automatic correction.

YouTube Live Control Room health messages

YouTube says, “The Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check for errors in the stream that you’re sending to YouTube.” Review the timestamped errors and their severity, then compare their times with when sync changes. Fix reported ingestion errors before judging the results of later tests. See YouTube’s live streaming error guidance.

OBS dropped frames and connection state

If you use OBS, check its dropped-frame counter, connection indicator, and logs. OBS explains that an increasing dropped-frame count with a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; OBS drops video frames to avoid buffering. That evidence merits investigating the network and configured bitrate, but network trouble should not be assumed to explain every case of progressive audio drift. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.

Check YouTube’s ingestion settings

Use YouTube’s current Live Control Room recommendations for the stream format and resolution you selected. Its live-stream error guidance specifies the following delivery settings:

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA) | USB audio adapter; no drivers needed; for Windows & Mac; 3.5mm headphone & mic jacks; usb to 3.5mm jack audio adapter
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
  • Video codec: H.264.
  • Audio codec: AAC or MP3.
  • One audio stream, with no more than two audio channels (mono or stereo).
  • Audio sample rate: 44.1 kHz.
  • Recommended audio stream bitrate: 128 Kbps.
  • Keyframes every two seconds, with an interval no longer than four seconds.

These are ingestion recommendations, not a diagnosis or guaranteed cure for a mismatch between source clocks. Confirm the applicable settings in YouTube’s live-stream error guidance before changing an encoder.

Choose a correction from the evidence

If the offset stays approximately constant

A measured constant delay may justify a constant delay adjustment in the component where that delay is introduced. First locate that component in the chain and preserve the existing configuration so you can compare the result. Do not treat a single measurement as evidence that a rate correction is needed.

If the gap grows over time

Investigate ongoing timing and clock behavior, timestamp continuity, resampling, and the relationship among audio and video sources. FFmpeg documents audio filters such as aresample, but the right behavior depends on the installed FFmpeg version and the specific source chain. Consult the FFmpeg filter documentation, validate any filter’s behavior and side effects, and test before applying it to a live output. Do not paste in a generic command or apply a constant offset just because the audio is out of sync.

If it appears only in YouTube playback

Check the sent stream, Live Control Room health messages, and a second player or device. Keep the local and delivered observations separate: a problem present only in playback does not, by itself, establish that the source or encoder needs a delay adjustment.

Retest long enough to catch slow drift

  1. Save or note the current encoder and source configuration.
  2. Record the audio/video gap and whether audio leads or lags near the start, then at later intervals.
  3. Compare local output with actual YouTube playback at those points.
  4. Note FFplay drift, OBS dropped-frame counts and connection state if applicable, and the times of YouTube health messages.
  5. Make one evidence-based change, then repeat the same observations on the actual YouTube stream.
  6. Continue for a duration representative of the broadcast. A short successful check cannot establish that a 24/7 stream will remain synchronized over a full operating cycle.

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Applying a fixed delay to a growing gap: A constant offset does not address a timing difference that accumulates. Measure at more than one point first.
  • Changing several settings together: If the result changes, you will not know which adjustment mattered. Preserve the configuration and test one change at a time.
  • Treating YouTube’s ingest values as a drift fix: Codec, sample-rate, bitrate, and keyframe recommendations support proper ingestion; they do not identify a separate clock or timestamp mismatch.
  • Blaming network instability without matching evidence: OBS’s dropped-frame indicators are useful evidence about the connection and configured bitrate, not proof that every gradual sync problem is network-caused.
  • Buying hardware before finding the fault: The available diagnostic steps rely on software and stream telemetry; no particular sync generator, capture card, USB interface, or monitoring device is established as necessary.
