First determine whether audio drift is in the YouTube stream itself or only in your local monitoring. Those are different problems, and changing an encoder sync offset will not necessarily fix a mismatch that grows over time. Compare the actual live output with headphones or speakers, measure any offset at the start and after a known interval, then check audio settings and connection health before changing the setup.
Find out where the drift is happening
Check the stream viewers receive on YouTube and compare it with your local monitoring path, such as OBS monitoring through headphones or speakers. A monitoring device can behave differently from the outgoing stream. An OBS community discussion describes monitor-only delay accumulation associated with a physical device clock, but that is a troubleshooting hypothesis—not proof of the cause in your setup. Read the OBS community discussion.

- If the YouTube output stays synchronized but local monitoring drifts, investigate the monitoring route and device rather than immediately changing the stream timing.
- If viewers hear drift in the live output, check whether a saved replay shows the same problem. Note the offset near the beginning and again after a measured interval.
- Keep the playback path and measurement method consistent. A single observed delay does not tell you whether the offset is constant or increasing.
A nearly constant offset and one that grows over time are distinct symptoms. A fixed sync adjustment may address a steady offset, but it is not a demonstrated fix for accumulating drift. The available documentation does not establish one universal correction for every encoder, audio source, and device combination.

Review YouTube Live’s stream health or configuration information for audio warnings. YouTube’s documentation identifies audio configuration issues and recommends audio sample rates of 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. It also sets out supported audio codecs and channel-count constraints. YouTube LiveStreams API documentation and YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance describe these requirements.

- Check the audio source or playback device settings.
- Check the audio settings your encoder is actually sending, including codec, sample rate, and channel count.
- Compare those values with YouTube’s stream health information and any reported configuration issue.
- If you use primary and backup streams, verify that their audio codec, sample rate, and channels match.
- Correct a mismatch if you find one, then observe the stream again. Do not change every setting to a new value without first identifying a discrepancy; preserve the existing configuration and logs before editing a continuous stream.
Separate audio drift from dropped frames or connection problems
In OBS, check dropped-frame and connection indicators independently of the audio timing. OBS says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. That can impair delivery, but a dropped-frame warning alone does not establish the cause of audio drift. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guidance.
If OBS reports dropped frames, follow its network and bitrate troubleshooting guidance and see whether delivery stabilizes. Then reassess audio/video synchronization separately. Avoid treating a connection warning as proof that an audio sync control is the answer.

Do not switch protocols just to chase gradual drift
End-to-end latency and accumulating audio/video desynchronization are not the same thing. YouTube explains that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than continuously like RTMP, and it documents protocol-specific setup requirements. That explains a latency trade-off; it does not establish that switching to HLS fixes gradual drift. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Local headphones or speakers drift, but the YouTube stream remains synchronized | Investigate the monitoring route and physical device; compare monitoring with the outgoing stream. | The monitor-only explanation discussed in the OBS forum is a hypothesis, not a confirmed cause for your setup. |
| The live stream and replay both show an offset that grows over time | Record the offset at the start and after a known interval; compare source, encoder, and YouTube audio settings. | No single universal correction or guaranteed setting is established for this symptom. |
| YouTube reports an audio configuration issue | Compare codec, sample rate, and channel count at the source and encoder with YouTube’s guidance; check primary and backup stream consistency. | A setting should not be changed blindly when no mismatch is reported. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or unstable connection | Use OBS’s connection and bitrate troubleshooting, then assess synchronization separately. | Dropped frames alone do not prove why audio and video are drifting. |
| The stream has noticeable delivery delay, but no measured growing offset | Distinguish end-to-end latency from synchronization; consult YouTube’s protocol setup requirements before changing ingest. | Switching to HLS is not established as a drift fix. |
If the problem persists, record the encoder, audio source, monitoring route, stream protocol, and the measured offsets over a stated interval. Those details help a technician identify which part of the signal path needs attention. The title alone does not establish that you need an audio interface, capture card, replacement computer, or other hardware.
