Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Most AR-glasses display failures come from the host video path, an unsuitable cable or adapter, an audio-output setting, or content protection—not from a dead display panel. Work through the checks in this order: confirm that the source can output DisplayPort video over USB-C, reseat or replace the cable with one rated for DP video, test the glasses on another compatible device, then isolate display-position, app, firmware and audio settings. The exact controls differ by model, so use your glasses’ manual for button names and menus.
Start by identifying exactly what fails
Describe the symptom before changing settings. The startup logo, the host’s desktop, a single protected app and audio are separate checkpoints. Knowing which checkpoint fails prevents you from replacing a cable when the source port cannot send video, or changing audio protocols when the host is muted.

| What you observe | Most useful first check | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| No startup logo after connection | Confirm host video capability, then reseat the cable and try a known-compatible host | The fault is likely in the host port, cable, adapter path or glasses hardware |
| Logo appears, but the desktop is black or out of view | Check display positioning and whether the problem affects every app | Anchor/position settings or app restrictions may be involved |
| Picture cuts in and out or shimmers continuously | Remove adapters, reseat both ends and test another DP-capable host | An unstable connection or compatibility issue is more likely than a simple volume setting |
| Picture works but there is no sound | Select the glasses as the host’s output and check mute and volume | Audio routing or the glasses’ audio protocol is the first suspect |
| Only one streaming or protected app is black | Test the home screen and another app | DRM/HDCP may be blocking that app’s external-display output |
Confirm that the host can send video
A USB-C-shaped socket is not automatically a display output. The phone, tablet, laptop, handheld or other source must support DisplayPort video over USB-C, commonly called DP Alt Mode. Some manufacturers use terms such as “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “Alt DP over USB-C” or “Thunderbolt 4” in their specifications. If the specification does not state video output, ask the device maker rather than assuming that charging or data support is enough.
Compatibility is model-specific. Two laptops with identical-looking USB-C ports can have different capabilities, and a phone may support video only through one connector or only with a particular operating-system version. Official guidance from XREAL and RayNeo warns that DP output is not supported by every device and varies by manufacturer and model.

Check the source specifications
- Find the exact model number of the phone, computer or console, not just its product family.
- Read the manufacturer’s port specification or support page for “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “DP Alt Mode,” “Alt DP over USB-C” or “Thunderbolt 4.”
- If the documentation is silent, contact the device manufacturer or test with a source that explicitly supports USB-C display output.
- On a computer, unlock the operating system and approve any prompt asking to authorize an external monitor or display accessory.
- If the source has multiple USB-C ports, test the one identified for video, Thunderbolt or display output; another port may provide only charging and data.
Do not treat a successful charge as proof of video support. Power can pass through a port that has no display signal.
Reseat the connection and isolate the physical path
Turn the glasses and source off if the model’s manual recommends it, then disconnect the cable at both ends. Inspect the plugs and sockets for bent contacts, debris, looseness or strain. Reconnect firmly so each plug is fully inserted; a partially seated USB-C connector can provide power while losing a high-speed video lane.
Use the correct cable
For a replacement, choose a cable whose specifications explicitly support DisplayPort video transmission. “USB-C cable,” “charging cable” or a high wattage rating alone does not establish video capability. Use the supplied cable for the glasses when it is available and undamaged. Avoid sharply bending a short glasses cable at the connector, because repeated strain can create an intermittent fault.

- Disconnect docks, hubs, splitters and unnecessary monitors temporarily.
- Test a different USB-C port on the same host when the specifications identify more than one suitable port.
- Connect the glasses directly instead of through an extension cable.
- If an adapter is unavoidable, verify that it supports the signal direction, the glasses model and any required power input.
Run a cross-device test
Connect the glasses and the same cable to a second device known to support DP video. If the glasses show their logo or desktop there, the original source, port or adapter path becomes the stronger suspect. If there is still no logo after repeated reconnections on a known-compatible source, the glasses or cable may require service. This test is more informative than repeatedly restarting one unverified host.

Fix a black screen step by step
When there is no logo at all
Return to the host check and cable test. Confirm that the source is unlocked and has allowed an external display. Reseat the glasses connector, try the supplied or DP-rated cable, and test another compatible port or host. A persistent display warning on a source that is documented to support DP output can indicate a damaged cable, adapter or glasses connector.
When the logo appears but the image seems missing
The panel may be working but positioned outside your field of view. Some glasses place the virtual screen in an Anchor mode that preserves its location in space. On XREAL models, the official black-screen guidance says to long-press the X button to recenter; button behavior is model-specific, so consult your own manual before copying that action. Move your head and check whether the image is offset rather than absent.
Also check the source’s display settings. A computer may be set to show the desktop only on another monitor, mirror the wrong display, or disable the external screen after sleep. Reopen the display panel, select mirror or extend as appropriate, and make sure brightness is not set to its minimum. These menu labels vary by operating system.

When only one app is black
Open the host home screen or another ordinary app. If those appear in the glasses, the hardware and link are delivering an image. Some video and financial apps use digital-rights-management (DRM) or HDCP restrictions that block playback on external displays. Reconnect and reopen the app, then check its help information for external-monitor limitations. Do not infer a failed panel from a single protected app when other content works.

When an HDMI-only source is involved
An HDMI source cannot normally drive USB-C display glasses with a passive cable. Manufacturer guidance identifies an HDMI-to-USB-C adapter path for some sources, but adapters are directional and model-dependent. The adapter may need its own power input and must handle the glasses’ signaling requirements. Confirm compatibility for the exact source, glasses and adapter together; there is no universal HDMI accessory that is established to work with every brand, console or television.
Stop persistent flicker without confusing it with update behavior
Flicker has no single cross-brand diagnosis. First perform reversible connection checks: reseat both connectors, inspect for looseness, use a cable rated for DP video, try another compatible USB-C port or host, and remove hubs or adapters. Record whether the flicker affects the entire image, starts when the cable moves, or appears only in one app. Those observations help support staff distinguish a link problem from software or panel behavior.
Separate a firmware-update flicker from a viewing fault
RayNeo’s official firmware updater states that the display may briefly flicker after the glasses connect to the computer during that update workflow. It describes this short event as normal and instructs users not to disconnect the glasses while an upgrade is in progress. Do not generalize that notice to ordinary viewing or to another manufacturer’s glasses.
During an update, use only the maker’s updater for the exact model, keep the connection stable and follow its completion message. If an update repeatedly fails, retry the documented connection procedure rather than unplugging during the transfer. Do not install an unofficial firmware file or attempt an arbitrary downgrade; an incorrect image can leave the glasses unusable.

When flicker continues during normal use
- Test the glasses on a known-good DP-capable host with a known-good cable.
- If possible, test without an adapter, dock or second monitor.
- Check whether gently touching the connector changes the symptom; stop using a cable that is loose or damaged.
- Install only firmware offered for the exact model and region through the manufacturer’s support process.
- If flicker remains on more than one compatible host, stop troubleshooting by substitution and contact official support.
Restore sound when the picture works
Check the host’s output first
On a computer or phone, open the system audio controls and explicitly select the glasses as the output device. Unmute the host, raise its volume and check the application’s own volume slider. Some systems keep speakers, Bluetooth headphones or a monitor selected even after a display accessory is connected. Play a local system sound or a different app to determine whether the problem is global or limited to one program.
Check the glasses’ physical mute and volume controls as well. A muted glasses state can persist independently of the host’s volume. The exact button sequence differs by model; use the manual for your pair.
Understand UAC and DP audio modes
Some XREAL One-series guidance describes two audio paths: USB Audio Class (UAC) and DP audio. UAC is generally compatible with devices that support USB-C DP output and is usually the default. HDMI-output sources and some gaming setups may require DP mode instead. Open the glasses’ settings app or menu, identify the current protocol and change it only when the default path is incompatible.
The same guidance warns that switching protocols repeatedly can affect display performance. Change the setting once, reconnect if instructed, and test audio before making another change. The menu and available protocols are specific to that product family; do not assume another brand uses the same labels.

Use the symptom split
When the picture is stable but sound is absent, audio routing and protocol are more useful checks than replacing a cable that is already carrying video. When both picture and sound fail, return to the host’s DP capability, the cable and any adapter path. This is a troubleshooting distinction, not proof that a particular component has failed.
Use software and permissions checks carefully
- Restart the host after changing display or audio output, especially if the glasses were connected while the host was asleep.
- Install operating-system updates only when they are supported by the host manufacturer and do not interrupt an in-progress glasses firmware update.
- Check display permissions or external-monitor authorization prompts; denying the request can leave the glasses powered but blank.
- Use the manufacturer’s official firmware utility for the exact glasses model. Verify the model name before starting because closely related versions can use different firmware.
- Keep the glasses connected directly and avoid moving the cable until the updater reports completion.
Firmware, compatibility lists and support menus change over time. If a current utility or manual gives a different button sequence from the one described here, follow the model-specific instructions.
A practical 10-minute diagnostic sequence
Follow this order so each test answers a different question:
- Identify the symptom: note whether there is no logo, a logo with a misplaced image, app-specific black video, flicker or missing audio.
- Verify the source: confirm DP over USB-C, DP Alt Mode or an equivalent video specification for the exact host model.
- Reconnect: unplug both ends, inspect them, and firmly reconnect the supplied or DP-rated cable.
- Remove complexity: bypass docks, hubs, extensions and extra monitors.
- Test another port: use a port documented for video output, if the host has one.
- Test another host: use a known DP-capable device and observe whether the startup logo appears.
- Recenter: if the logo appears, use the glasses’ documented recenter or Anchor control and check the host’s display mode.
- Test another app: if only one app is black, investigate DRM/HDCP restrictions rather than assuming hardware failure.
- Route audio: select the glasses as output, unmute both devices and check the documented UAC/DP setting if necessary.
- Escalate: if the symptom survives the cross-device test, use official firmware and support channels instead of opening the glasses.
Know when the evidence points to support or warranty service
Contact the manufacturer when the glasses show no logo on a known DP-capable host with a suitable cable, when a display warning persists despite verified host support, when the problem remains across multiple hosts, or when flicker continues after connection checks. Regional support pages may direct unresolved cases to aftersales service, and warranty terms differ by model and country.
Prepare the information support will need:
- Exact glasses model, host model and operating-system version
- Cable and adapter details, including whether the cable is rated for DP video
- Whether the glasses show a startup logo
- Which hosts, ports and apps were tested
- Whether the fault affects picture, sound or both
- A short video showing the flicker or black-screen behavior, if safe to record
Do not open the glasses, force a firmware downgrade or continue using a visibly damaged connector while a warranty claim is possible. Manufacturer support hubs provide the applicable firmware, warranty and contact instructions for each model.
Quick Recap
Prevent repeat failures
- Label the host ports that support video so a charging-only port is not mistaken for a display port.
- Keep a DP-video-capable cable with the glasses and avoid substituting an unknown charging cable.
- Support the cable near the connector instead of letting the glasses hang from it.
- Disconnect through the host’s normal display workflow when the operating system provides one.
- Update firmware only through the official utility for the exact model.
- When buying an HDMI adapter, verify direction, power, source output, glasses compatibility and manufacturer approval as a single set of requirements.
