How to Fix Apple Watch Haptics That Aren’t Working

If your Apple Watch has stopped tapping for notifications, start on the watch at Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and choose Default or Prominent, not Off. Then check the affected app’s notification settings in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and make sure the watch is snug enough for its back to maintain skin contact. Silent Mode can mute sounds while leaving haptic notifications available. If those checks are correct and expected taps are still absent, Apple says the watch may need service.

First, identify which haptic feedback is missing

“Haptics” can mean several different vibrations on an Apple Watch. The setting that controls a tap for a message, call, reminder or other alert is Alert Haptics. The Digital Crown has a separate feedback setting, and taps generated while navigating watchOS are controlled by System Haptics. Changing one category does not repair another.

What you no longer feel Relevant control Where to check
Wrist taps for notifications and alerts Alert Haptics Apple Watch: Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics
Clicks or vibration while rotating the Digital Crown Crown Haptics Apple Watch: Settings > Sounds & Haptics
Feedback from system interactions System Haptics Apple Watch: Settings > Sounds & Haptics

Apple’s user guide describes these as separate controls, so a missing notification tap should be diagnosed as an alert-haptic problem rather than a Crown Haptics problem. Apple’s Apple Watch user guide explains the distinction.

Turn alert haptics back on

The most common setting error is that Alert Haptics has been changed to Off. Restore it directly on the watch:

  1. Open the Settings app on the Apple Watch.
  2. Tap Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Tap Haptics.
  4. Select Default or Prominent.

Default provides the normal alert tap. Prominent adds an extra tap that pre-announces some other haptic alerts; it does not enable a different class of notification. Leave the setting on Prominent while troubleshooting if normal taps are difficult to notice, then switch to Default if you prefer the less noticeable pattern. Apple documents these choices in its support instructions for changing audio and notification settings: Apple Support: Change the audio and notification settings on your Apple Watch.

After changing the setting, wait for an alert that you know should reach the watch. Do not use the Digital Crown’s feedback as the test, because Crown Haptics are independent of notification taps.

Check the notification and haptic settings for the affected app

A watch-wide haptic setting cannot produce a tap for an alert that the watch is not receiving. If only messages, calls, calendar events or one other category is affected, inspect that app’s settings on the paired iPhone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
  2. Tap My Watch.
  3. Open Sounds & Haptics and review the settings for the app or alert type involved.

The exact controls and their location can vary by app and software version. Some apps mirror iPhone notification choices; others expose additional choices in their own section of the Watch app. Make sure the alert is enabled for the watch rather than delivered only to the iPhone, and confirm that the affected app is allowed to send notifications on the iPhone.

This check matters when one alert type is silent but other notifications still tap normally. If every alert is silent, return to the watch-wide Haptics setting before changing a single app.

Make sure the watch is making reliable skin contact

Apple says the back of the watch needs skin contact for the best haptic results and recommends a snug but comfortable fit. A loose band can let the watch move away from your wrist, making a light tap difficult to feel even when the software setting is correct.

  • Wear the watch with the back of the case resting against your skin.
  • Tighten the band enough to prevent the case from shifting, without making it uncomfortable or restricting circulation.
  • Recheck the fit after changing clothes, exercising or moving the watch to a different wrist.
  • Clean and dry the contact area and the back of the watch if moisture or debris is preventing a stable fit.

A different compatible band is an optional fit solution only when the current band cannot hold the watch securely. It cannot repair a Haptics setting that is Off or a failed haptic component, and compatibility depends on the exact Apple Watch case size.

If the watch also locks unexpectedly or behaves as though it has been removed from your wrist, treat that as an additional contact clue. Apple’s guidance on unexpected locking covers wrist detection, fit and skin contact: Apple Support: If your Apple Watch locks unexpectedly.

Do not confuse Silent Mode with disabled haptics

Silent Mode silences sounds. It does not, by itself, turn off haptic notifications; Apple says you can still receive haptic alerts while the watch is silent. Therefore, turning Silent Mode off is not the primary fix for missing taps. Check Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and make sure the value is Default or Prominent.

This distinction explains two common, opposite misunderstandings:

  • If you enabled Silent Mode and expected all vibration to stop, the watch may still tap because haptic alerts remain enabled.
  • If you expected taps while the watch is silent but set Haptics to Off, disabling Silent Mode will restore sound but not the haptic motor; you must change Haptics to Default or Prominent.

Use the symptom to choose the next check

Symptom Most useful check What the result tells you
No notification taps from any app Watch-wide Haptics setting, then fit and skin contact A setting or contact issue is more likely than an individual app configuration.
Only one app or alert category is silent Watch app on iPhone: My Watch, then the affected app’s notification controls The watch may be working while that alert is disabled or routed to the iPhone.
Digital Crown feedback is missing but notifications tap Crown Haptics in Settings > Sounds & Haptics Alert Haptics are functioning; changing the notification setting will not address Crown feedback.
System navigation feedback is missing but alerts work System Haptics in Settings > Sounds & Haptics The problem is interaction feedback, not notification delivery.
Taps are difficult to feel or occur inconsistently Snug, comfortable fit and continuous back-of-watch skin contact Movement between the case and wrist can reduce what you perceive even when haptics are enabled.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

Follow these checks in order so you change one variable at a time and can tell whether the problem is global, app-specific or physical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set Haptics to Default or Prominent. On the watch, open Settings, Sounds & Haptics, Haptics. If Off is selected, choose one of the two enabled modes.
  2. Identify the missing category. Decide whether the absent feedback is a notification tap, Digital Crown response or system-interaction response. Open the corresponding control instead of changing all haptic settings indiscriminately.
  3. Inspect the affected app on the iPhone. In the Watch app, open My Watch and review the app’s notification and sound/haptic options. Confirm the alert is permitted on the watch.
  4. Correct the fit. Place the back of the case directly against your skin and adjust the band so it is snug but comfortable. Keep the watch in that position while waiting for the next expected alert.
  5. Interpret Silent Mode correctly. Leave Silent Mode on if you want a quiet watch; it should not prevent enabled haptic notifications. If you want no taps, change Haptics to Off deliberately rather than relying on Silent Mode.
  6. Check for a related wrist-detection issue. Unexpected locking or other signs that the watch does not consistently detect your wrist point to a contact or fit problem that should be addressed separately.
  7. Escalate if the expected tap is still absent. When the relevant haptic control is enabled, the app’s alert is allowed, and skin contact is reliable, Apple says the watch might need service.

Verify that you are testing a real watch alert

Use an alert that is genuinely enabled for the watch when testing. A notification that is blocked on the iPhone, limited to the phone, or disabled for the specific app cannot trigger a wrist tap. Test one known app at a time rather than sending several alerts together. If messages tap but calendar alerts do not, that pattern points toward the calendar notification controls rather than the watch’s haptic hardware.

After changing a setting, allow time for a normal alert and repeat the test. A single missed notification does not establish that the motor has failed. Note whether the watch produces any tap at all, whether only one category is absent, and whether the result changes when the case is held snugly against the wrist. These observations make Apple’s eventual diagnosis more useful.

Why Prominent can help during diagnosis

Default is the ordinary alert pattern, while Prominent adds an extra tap before some other haptic alerts. If you regularly miss the lighter Default pattern, Prominent gives you a clearer test signal without changing which apps are allowed to notify you. It is an intensity choice, not a replacement for app permissions or a different notification channel. Once you can consistently feel alerts, choose whichever of the two patterns is comfortable.

Fit, bands and wrist detection

The band does not need to be tight enough to leave a mark. The goal is steady contact between the watch back and skin while you move. A band that allows the case to slide can make taps seem intermittent, especially during exercise or when clothing catches the watch. Repositioning the watch and adjusting the existing band is the first step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider another band only if the current one cannot provide that stable, comfortable fit. Check that the replacement is compatible with the exact case size. No band can restore haptics that are switched off, re-enable an app notification, or repair a failed component. If the watch also locks as though it has been removed, mention that symptom because it supports a wrist-contact or detection diagnosis.

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Changing only Silent Mode. Silent Mode affects sound, not the enabled/disabled state of alert haptics.
  • Adjusting Crown Haptics for missing messages. Crown feedback and notification taps are independent.
  • Replacing a band before checking settings. A new band is useful only when the old fit is genuinely unreliable.
  • Assuming every app behaves identically. App controls vary by app and watch software version, so inspect the affected app specifically.
  • Opening the case. Apple’s guidance points to settings, fit checks and service, not user replacement of the haptic motor.

When Apple service is the appropriate next step

Arrange Apple support or service when all of the following are true:

  • Alert Haptics is set to Default or Prominent, or the correct Crown/System Haptics control is enabled for the feedback you are testing.
  • The affected app is configured to deliver its notification to the Apple Watch.
  • The watch back remains in snug, comfortable contact with your skin.
  • The expected feedback is still absent across repeated, legitimate alerts.

Apple’s support guidance says a watch that still fails to provide expected haptic alerts after settings and fit checks may need service. The guidance does not recommend replacing the vibration motor yourself. Avoid opening the case or attempting a motor repair: that can create additional damage and does not address an app-routing or configuration problem.

When contacting Apple, describe exactly what is missing: notification taps, Crown Haptics, System Haptics or all three. Also note whether the problem affects every app or only one, whether the watch locks unexpectedly, which Haptics mode is selected, and whether the case maintains skin contact. Those details separate a notification-setting issue from a broader hardware or detection fault.

Quick reference: the settings that matter

Setting or condition Expected behavior Use it for this problem?
Haptics: Default Normal alert taps Yes, for ordinary notification testing
Haptics: Prominent Normal alert pattern plus an extra pre-announcing tap for some alerts Yes, useful when regular taps are hard to notice
Haptics: Off No alert haptic notifications No, unless you intentionally want taps disabled
Silent Mode Sounds silenced; enabled haptic notifications can still arrive Not a fix for missing haptics
Crown Haptics Feedback from Digital Crown rotation Only when Crown feedback itself is missing
System Haptics Feedback from system interactions Only when interaction feedback itself is missing
Snug skin contact Best chance of feeling the watch’s taps Always verify before service

Using the category-specific control, app-level notification permissions and a reliable fit prevents the most common misdiagnoses. If those conditions are satisfied and the watch still produces no expected feedback, service is the documented next step rather than further random setting changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Apple Watch make sound but not vibrate?

Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics on the watch and select Default or Prominent. Sound volume and alert haptics are separate controls, so changing volume alone will not enable taps.

Does Silent Mode turn off Apple Watch haptics?

No. Silent Mode silences sounds, while enabled haptic notifications can still arrive. If there are no taps, check whether Haptics is set to Off and review the affected app’s notification settings.

Why do only one app’s notifications fail to tap?

The app may be disabled for the watch or configured to alert only on the iPhone. In the iPhone Watch app, open My Watch and review that app’s notification and sound/haptic controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Alert, Crown and System Haptics?

Alert Haptics control wrist taps for notifications. Crown Haptics provide feedback while rotating the Digital Crown. System Haptics cover feedback from watchOS interactions. A setting in one category does not repair another.

Can a loose Apple Watch band cause missed haptic alerts?

Yes. Apple recommends a snug, comfortable fit with the back of the watch touching skin for the best haptic results. Adjust the existing band first; buy another compatible band only if the current one cannot maintain that contact.

Should I turn Silent Mode off to test haptics?

You may leave Silent Mode on while testing because it does not disable haptic notifications. The important test is an expected alert with Haptics set to Default or Prominent.

When should I contact Apple about missing haptics?

Contact Apple when the relevant haptic setting is enabled, the affected app is allowed to notify the watch, and the case maintains skin contact, yet repeated legitimate alerts still produce no expected feedback. Apple says the watch might need service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe to replace the Apple Watch vibration motor myself?

Apple’s support guidance does not recommend a user motor replacement. Do not open the case; seek Apple support or service after completing the settings, notification and fit checks.

The Bottom Line

Set Alert Haptics to Default or Prominent, verify the affected app can notify the watch, and wear the watch snugly against your skin. Silent Mode is not the cause by itself, and Crown or System Haptics are separate controls. If expected taps remain absent after those checks, arrange Apple service instead of opening the watch.
