When Apple TV+ will not play on a smart TV, first determine whether the failure affects one title, the Apple TV app, every streaming service, or the television’s network connection. Try another Apple TV title and another streaming app, run the app’s Video Troubleshooting check when available, pause competing internet use, restart the TV or streaming device, and then update the app and TV software. That order uses reversible checks before account changes or a Smart Hub reset.
Identify what is actually failing
A black screen, spinner, “check your internet connection” message, repeated buffering, and a sign-in error can have different causes. Do not begin by resetting the television. Compare playback in a controlled way so that you know which component needs attention.

Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance also starts by trying another Apple TV title and another streaming app. This comparison is more informative than repeatedly pressing Play on the same failed video. Menus, supported models, and available features vary by manufacturer, model, software version, and country.
Run Apple’s in-app Video Troubleshooting check
On supported smart TVs and streaming devices, Apple provides a network diagnostic inside the Apple TV app. It checks the connection and presents on-screen actions for playback problems. To run it:

- Open the Apple TV app.
- Open the sidebar.
- Choose Settings.
- Select Video Troubleshooting.
- Choose Start, then follow each instruction shown on screen.
The exact feature is not available in every country, region, or device edition. If you do not see Video Troubleshooting, continue with the TV’s own network-status screen and the remaining steps in this guide rather than assuming the app is unsupported.
Apple describes this flow in its Apple TV app connection troubleshooting guide. A completed check does not guarantee uninterrupted playback: it examines the connection at that moment, while congestion or competing use can change conditions later.
Check the connection and reduce competing traffic
Confirm that the TV is online
Open the television’s network settings and verify that it is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection. If the TV reports no internet access, fix that connection before reinstalling or resetting the Apple TV app. A TV can remain connected to Wi-Fi while the internet service behind it is unavailable, so also test another app that requires an online connection.
Pause other internet activity
Apple recommends temporarily pausing heavy or simultaneous internet use when video quality is poor or playback stops. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, video calls, and other streams on the household network, then try the title again. This is a diagnostic step, not a claim that a particular bandwidth number guarantees success.
Interpret Samsung’s reference figures correctly
For Samsung TVs and projectors, Samsung’s undated troubleshooting page lists 25 Mbps for 4K and 5 Mbps for HD as reference figures when Apple TV video will not play or has low quality. These are Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance, not universal Apple TV+ requirements. Available bandwidth can fluctuate, Wi-Fi conditions can vary by room, and several devices may share the connection. Use the figures as context while diagnosing a Samsung setup, not as a promise that a speed test alone will cure buffering.

If another app works only intermittently, or the TV repeatedly reports that it is offline, follow the internet-service or TV manufacturer’s network diagnostics. Avoid buying a new router or replacing the TV solely because one Apple TV title buffers; first establish whether the same network problem affects other services.
Restart the TV or streaming device
A restart clears a temporary app or platform state without deleting your account. Stop playback, turn the smart TV or attached streaming device off, wait for it to finish shutting down, and turn it back on. If the device has a separate power control, use the normal on-screen power command first; only disconnect power when the manufacturer’s instructions allow it and the device will not shut down normally.

After the home screen returns, open Apple TV and test the same title once. Roku’s troubleshooting instructions similarly direct users to check the connection and restart the Roku when the connection is good. If the television itself remains frozen or cannot open other apps after the restart, switch to the manufacturer’s support path instead of repeating app actions.
Update the Apple TV app and television software
Apple TV app updates
Apple says the Apple TV app should generally update automatically on a compatible, internet-connected smart TV, streaming device, or game console. Leave the device connected to the internet and restart it after an update is offered. The app’s update behavior and manual-update menu are controlled by the platform, so there is no single Apple menu path that applies to every television.
TV or device firmware updates
Firmware is separate from the Apple TV app. Open the manufacturer’s settings and look for a software, system, support, or update section, then install an update only when the device has a stable connection and sufficient time to restart. Samsung specifically recommends checking TV firmware when its Apple TV app is not working. On other brands, use the exact instructions for the model; do not assume Samsung’s menu names or reset procedures transfer to another platform.

After updating, perform one fresh playback test. If the app works for other titles but one video still fails, return to the scope comparison rather than treating every failure as a firmware defect.

Samsung’s official troubleshooting page is written for Samsung televisions and projectors, not for all smart TVs. Its sequence includes checking the internet connection and firmware, trying another Apple TV title, trying another streaming app, and considering the connection figures described above.
Use Smart Hub reset only as a last resort
A Smart Hub reset can be part of Samsung’s instructions for certain persistent problems, but it is not a harmless app refresh. Samsung warns that the reset signs you out of apps and requires the TV PIN. Record the sign-in details you will need before choosing it, and use the procedure for your exact model. Do not perform a Smart Hub reset merely because one title is unavailable or because the Video Troubleshooting option is missing.
Read Samsung’s model-specific instructions at Samsung’s Apple TV app troubleshooting page. If the page’s model or menu does not match your television, contact Samsung support rather than improvising a reset sequence.
Roku device steps and compatibility
Roku documents Apple TV playback and sign-in troubleshooting for compatible Roku streaming devices. First check the Roku’s network status. When the connection is good, restart the Roku and try Apple TV again. A network that is fast enough for another device but disconnected on the Roku still needs to be fixed on the Roku itself.

Not every Roku device supports the Apple TV app. Confirm support for the exact model and software edition before assuming that an absent app, sign-in failure, or playback problem is a temporary fault. Roku’s documentation on using Apple TV is at Roku’s Apple TV compatibility and usage page; its error-recovery instructions are at Roku’s Apple TV sign-in and playback troubleshooting page. Region and device availability can affect what you see, so a menu shown in Roku’s documentation may not appear identically in every market.
What to do on other smart-TV platforms
For brands other than Samsung, use the same diagnostic order but the manufacturer’s own menu labels:
- Confirm the TV’s network status and test another streaming app.
- Use Apple TV’s Video Troubleshooting flow if the device provides it.
- Restart the TV or streaming device normally.
- Check for both an Apple TV app update and a TV firmware update.
- Look up the model-specific procedure for reinstalling the app, clearing app data, or resetting a platform hub.
Reinstall and data-clearing options differ substantially. They may remove a local sign-in, downloads, preferences, or parental controls. Read the manufacturer’s warning before confirming one. A factory reset should be reserved for a documented platform problem after less destructive steps have failed; it erases broader TV settings and is not a routine Apple TV+ buffering fix.

When only one movie or episode fails
If other Apple TV titles play normally, note the title, episode, and exact error, then retry later. A single-title failure does not prove that the TV, Wi-Fi, or entire service is down. Verify that the title is available in your country and on your device edition before changing settings. Availability can differ by region and supported model.

The Apple TV app can display Apple TV+ programming alongside channels, rentals, purchases, and third-party services. Apple states that an Apple TV subscription does not include third-party-branded subscription services or content offered for rental or purchase in the app. If a screen asks you to subscribe to another service or pay to rent or buy, that can be a catalog or entitlement distinction rather than a streaming malfunction.

Do not repeatedly sign out, reset the TV, or change network settings to solve a message that is actually describing a separate subscription or transaction.
Choose the right escalation path
Contact Apple for an Apple TV-only failure
If other apps play, the TV is online, a restart and software updates have been completed, and every Apple TV title still fails, use Apple Support for an app-specific issue. Have the TV or streaming-device model, software version, Apple TV app version if shown, title and episode, region, and exact error wording ready. Mention whether the in-app Video Troubleshooting flow was available and what it reported.

If several streaming apps fail, the television cannot maintain its network connection, menus freeze, or the device repeatedly reboots, the manufacturer is the appropriate first escalation. Provide the model number and firmware version, describe which apps were tested, and say whether the TV’s network-status screen reports internet access. This evidence helps support distinguish a platform fault from an Apple TV account or title issue.
Escalate an internet problem to the network provider
If phones, computers, and the TV all lose access or competing use consistently disrupts every service, the internet connection needs attention outside the Apple TV app. Record when the interruptions occur and whether pausing other activity changes playback. Do not present a single speed-test result as proof of a permanent service level.
Would an external streaming device help?
An external device can be reasonable when the built-in TV platform is outdated, no longer receives app updates, or has a persistent app-specific fault. A compatible Roku streaming device is one documented way to run the Apple TV app, but compatibility must be checked for the exact model and region. An external device will not by itself repair a weak internet connection, an Apple account problem, a title-availability restriction, or an Apple service outage. Treat it as a platform workaround, not a guaranteed cure, and test the network and account conditions first.
Final troubleshooting checklist
- Play another Apple TV title.
- Play another streaming app.
- Check the TV or streaming device’s network status.
- Run Apple TV > sidebar > Settings > Video Troubleshooting > Start when that option is present.
- Pause competing internet activity.
- Restart the TV or streaming device.
- Allow the Apple TV app to update and install the manufacturer’s firmware update.
- Use Samsung’s model-specific guidance, Roku’s compatibility and restart guidance, or the equivalent support page for another platform.
- Reserve hub, data, or factory resets for documented persistent faults, noting what will be erased or signed out.
- Escalate to Apple when only Apple TV fails, to the device maker when the platform fails broadly, and to the internet provider when the connection fails across devices.
This sequence isolates the fault before you erase settings or buy hardware, while preserving the distinctions between a title restriction, an Apple TV app problem, a television-platform problem, and an unstable connection.
