Start by isolating the failure: if only one app or title is affected, force-quit that app and check its service or developer; if several apps or devices buffer, troubleshoot the network; if Apple TV itself is unresponsive, restart it; then install any available tvOS update. Reserve a factory reset for persistent problems because it erases accounts and configuration.
This sequence applies to Apple TV 4K symptoms including spinning playback, video that repeatedly pauses, a frozen interface, and apps that close unexpectedly. The correct fix depends on whether the problem follows one app, one title, the Apple TV, or the entire internet connection.
Force-quit the affected app, reopen it, and contact that app’s developer if the behavior continues.
One show or movie fails but other titles play
Try another title, check the provider’s service status, and test the same title on another device.
Several apps buffer or fail
Test the network, pause other internet activity, and restart the router, modem, and Apple TV.
Apple TV is frozen everywhere, including menus
Restart Apple TV with the remote or by disconnecting power for five seconds.
Apple TV and another device fail on the same connection
Investigate the internet service or local network rather than reinstalling one app.
The device is showing an update progress screen
Do not unplug it immediately; follow the update guidance and escalate if the progress has been stalled for more than an hour.
These observations do not prove a root cause, but they prevent an app-specific crash from being treated as a broadband problem or a household network failure from being treated as a bad app.

Check whether the Apple TV app or a third-party app is involved
For playback in the Apple TV app, check Apple’s service status and the third-party provider carrying the content. Try the same playback on a second device using the same connection. If that device also fails, Apple advises contacting your internet service provider. A problem confined to a separate App Store app may need to be reported to that app’s developer. See Apple’s streaming troubleshooting guidance.
Compare one title with every title
A single unavailable movie, episode, or live stream can look like buffering even when your connection is healthy. Play a different title in the same app, then try a different app. If only one program fails on Apple TV and on another device, the provider or that title is the stronger lead. If every title fails only on Apple TV, continue with the device and network checks.
Fix buffering by testing the network
Buffering means Apple TV is not receiving media data fast or consistently enough for uninterrupted playback. A speed-test result from another device is useful, but it does not guarantee that every service, video format, simultaneous stream, or Wi-Fi condition will work.
Apple’s Apple TV app guidance states: “Streaming HD content requires 8 Mbit/s or faster.” That is Apple’s stated threshold for HD streaming in that guidance, not a universal guarantee for every app or household. Several people streaming, downloading, gaming, or backing up at once can reduce the bandwidth available to Apple TV. Temporarily pause those activities and test the stream again.
Do not interpret 8 Mbit/s as a recommended whole-home plan or as proof that a faster subscription eliminates every pause. Wireless interference, provider congestion, a service outage, and the number of simultaneous streams can still matter. The most useful comparison is whether playback improves when other traffic is stopped and whether another device on the same connection has the same symptom.
Restart the complete connection
Stop playback on Apple TV.
Power off or unplug the router and modem (or the single gateway supplied by your provider).
Wait briefly, then power the modem and router back on and allow their connection lights to stabilize.
Restart Apple TV using the procedure in the next section.
Play the same title again before changing additional settings.
Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the router and modem are powered and connected. It also suggests placing Apple TV and the router in the same room where possible, while avoiding direct close placement: do not put Apple TV directly on or within 30 cm of the router. Metal surfaces, cabinets, and other obstructions can weaken the wireless signal. See Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Use placement as a controlled test
Move the Apple TV temporarily to improve its line of connection to the router, without placing the two devices directly together. Retest the same program from the same point in playback. An improvement after moving the device supports a wireless coverage or obstruction problem; no improvement means you should continue checking the service, modem, router, or Apple TV rather than assuming placement is the only cause.
A direct Ethernet connection can separate a Wi-Fi problem from an internet-service problem. Connect a compatible cable from the Apple TV Ethernet port to the router or modem, then retry the stream. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi models do not have an Ethernet port, so identify the exact model before buying a cable. Apple’s setup documentation lists the connection options for Apple TV 4K:
5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)

If playback becomes stable over Ethernet, investigate wireless placement, interference, or coverage. If it still buffers over Ethernet, the issue may be the internet service, provider-side congestion, the streaming service, or another device consuming the connection. Ethernet is a diagnostic step; it does not repair an app crash or guarantee smoother playback in every network.
Run the Apple TV app’s built-in video check
The Apple TV app has a video troubleshooting tool on supported devices and in supported regions:
Open the Apple TV app.
Open the sidebar.
Choose Settings.
Choose Video Troubleshooting.
Select Start and follow the on-screen instructions.
This tool concerns playback in the Apple TV app. It is not a system-wide diagnostic for every third-party app installed on Apple TV 4K. Feature availability can vary by region and device. The official instructions are at Apple’s video troubleshooting page.
If one app hangs while the rest of tvOS responds, force-quit it before restarting the entire Apple TV.
Press the TV button twice quickly on the Siri Remote to open the app switcher.
Move to the affected app.
Swipe up on the clickpad or touch surface to quit it.
Return to the Home Screen and open the app again.
Apple documents this procedure in its force-quit guide. Force-quitting clears the app’s current session; it does not erase the app’s account or guarantee that a defective update or provider outage is fixed. If the same third-party app repeatedly fails while other apps remain normal, Apple directs users toward the app’s developer. Also test another title, because a single unavailable stream can look like an app crash.
Use the two-press shortcut only when the interface still responds. If the app switcher will not open or the Home Screen itself is frozen, skip directly to a system restart. Repeating force-quits will not correct a network failure affecting every app.
Restart Apple TV 4K when the interface is unresponsive
Choose the least disruptive restart method that still works.

Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Restart with the remote
Press and hold the TV button and the Back button until the status light blinks rapidly. On a remote that has a Menu button instead of Back, hold the TV and Menu buttons. Apple lists these remote combinations in its restart instructions.
Power-cycle Apple TV
Disconnect Apple TV from power.
Wait five seconds.
Reconnect it and allow it to boot.
Use this option when the remote and Settings are unavailable. If Apple TV remains unresponsive after restarting, proceed to the reset and support options rather than repeatedly removing power.
Install available tvOS updates safely
Updates can include performance and stability improvements, but a release note mentioning stability does not establish that it will fix a particular home network or app.
If an update is offered, choose Download and Install.
Keep Apple TV connected to power and do not interrupt the installation while it downloads, prepares, applies, and restarts. Apple’s current instructions are at Apple’s software-update guide; version-specific changes are listed in Apple’s tvOS release notes.
When an update appears stuck
If the screen says Preparing Update or Applying Update and the progress bar appears not to move, allow it time to finish. Apple says to contact Apple Support if it has been more than an hour before unplugging or restarting Apple TV in that state. Interrupting an update can create a separate startup problem, so do not treat a stalled-looking bar as permission to remove power immediately.
What to do when only one app keeps crashing
After force-quitting, compare the app with the rest of the system:
Open two or more other streaming apps and play content briefly.
Try a different title in the affected app.
Check whether the app offers an update through the App Store.
Sign out and back in only if the app’s own controls provide that option and you know the account credentials.
Check the provider’s service status and test the same account or title on another device.
If other apps play normally and the failure follows one third-party app, the evidence points toward that app or its service rather than Apple TV’s Wi-Fi hardware. Apple says a separate App Store app issue may need to be handled by the developer; use the support route supplied by that app.
Capture the exact behavior before contacting the developer: whether the app closes, shows a loading wheel, returns an error, or freezes the remote; which title and account were involved; and whether the same title works elsewhere. Those details help the developer distinguish an account, catalog, service, or app-process problem.

When several apps buffer or freeze
Multiple affected apps make a shared dependency more likely: Wi-Fi, the router, the modem, the internet provider, or Apple TV’s connection to the network. Work through these checks in order:
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other streams on the network.
Restart the modem, router, and Apple TV.
Move Apple TV and the router closer together while avoiding direct placement within 30 cm or behind metal obstructions.
Use Ethernet for a model that has an Ethernet port.
Test the same service on another device connected to the same network.
Contact the internet provider if the second device fails as well.
A service outage can affect several apps at once, but local network tests help distinguish that case from a weak wireless link. Do not buy a cable or replace HDMI hardware as a first response to buffering; neither addresses an outage or an app process that is crashing.
When playback stops but menus still work
A stream that pauses while the Home Screen remains responsive is usually approached as a playback or connection problem rather than a complete device freeze. Try another title, then another app. If only the Apple TV app is affected, use its Settings > Video Troubleshooting > Start tool where available. If every service pauses, repeat the network checks and temporarily stop other traffic. If another device on the same connection also fails, involve the internet provider or the affected service.
If the remote cannot navigate, apps will not open, and Settings is inaccessible, use the remote-button restart. If that fails, disconnect power for five seconds and reconnect it. Once the Home Screen returns, install a pending tvOS update before testing the original task again. A frozen interface that recurs across apps after a restart and update is an appropriate reason to contact Apple TV Support before erasing the device.
Use reset only as an escalation
A reset is not a routine buffering remedy. In Settings > System > Reset, Apple TV is restored to factory settings and all data is erased, including accounts and configuration. The Reset and Update option also installs the latest tvOS. You will need to set up Apple TV again and sign in to services afterward.
An Ethernet cable is worth considering only as a controlled test when your Apple TV 4K has an Ethernet port and Wi-Fi is a plausible weak link. It can show whether playback changes on a direct connection. It cannot fix an app that crashes, a provider outage, insufficient service capacity, or a tvOS problem. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi models lack that port, so verify the model before spending money. HDMI replacement is not the primary remedy for buffering, freezing playback, or apps closing unexpectedly.
One app: force-quit it, reopen it, try another title, and use the developer’s support channel if it continues.
One title: test another title and another device; check the content provider’s status.
Several apps: pause other traffic, restart modem/router/Apple TV, improve placement, and test Ethernet if the model supports it.
Several devices on the same network: contact the internet provider or investigate a service outage.
Apple TV unresponsive: restart from Settings, with the remote, or by removing power for five seconds.
Update in progress: leave it connected; if the progress screen has been stalled for more than an hour, contact Apple before interrupting it.
Persistent failure after these steps: consider the data-erasing reset or Apple Support.
Preventing a repeat problem
Keep Apple TV and the router positioned to avoid signal obstructions and direct close placement.
Leave enough connection capacity for other people and devices; the 8 Mbit/s figure is Apple’s HD guidance for the Apple TV app, not a whole-home bandwidth plan.
Install tvOS updates through Settings > System > Software Updates rather than postponing them indefinitely.
Record whether a problem affects one app, one title, or every service before contacting support; that information shortens diagnosis.
Know whether your Apple TV 4K model includes Ethernet before planning a wired test.
When a problem returns, repeat the same title and device comparison instead of changing several variables at once. A controlled retest tells you whether restarting, pausing traffic, moving the box, or switching to Ethernet made a difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Apple TV 4K keep buffering?
First determine whether every app buffers or only one title. Pause other network activity, restart the modem, router, and Apple TV, improve Wi-Fi placement, and test another device on the same connection. Apple cites 8 Mbit/s or faster for HD streaming in its Apple TV app guidance, but that is not a guarantee for every service or household.
5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Why does my Apple TV keep freezing while the menus still work?
Treat it as a playback or connection issue first. Try another title and another app, use the Apple TV app’s Video Troubleshooting tool where available, and repeat the network checks. If the interface itself is frozen, restart Apple TV with the remote or disconnect power for five seconds.
How do I force-quit an app on Apple TV 4K?
Press the TV button twice quickly, select the affected app in the app switcher, and swipe up on the clickpad or touch surface. Reopen the app from the Home Screen.
Why do apps keep crashing on Apple TV?
If only one third-party app crashes, force-quit it, try another title, check its service status, and contact the developer if it continues. If several apps fail, investigate the network, restart Apple TV, and install available tvOS updates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It can help diagnose a weak Wi-Fi connection on models with an Ethernet port. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi models do not have one. A wired connection will not fix an app crash, service outage, or every internet problem.
Should I unplug Apple TV during a stuck update?
No. If Preparing Update or Applying Update has shown no progress for more than an hour, Apple advises contacting Apple Support before unplugging or restarting the device.
Will resetting Apple TV delete my accounts?
Yes. Settings > System > Reset restores factory settings and erases data, including accounts and configuration. Reset and Update also installs the latest tvOS, after which you must set up the Apple TV again.
When should I contact my internet provider?
Test the same stream on another device using the same connection. If that device also fails, or several apps and devices are affected after restarting your equipment, contact the provider or check for a service outage.
Diagnose the scope before buying hardware or erasing the Apple TV. Force-quit one misbehaving app, pause competing network traffic, restart the complete connection, and test Ethernet only on a compatible model. Update tvOS safely, wait out a stalled update for up to an hour before contacting Apple, and reserve Reset for persistent failures because it removes accounts and configuration.
