Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“App not installed” is a generic Android symptom, not a diagnosis. The same dialog can result from a blocked installation source, an Android-version mismatch, Android 15’s target-SDK rule, a conflicting installed copy, or an APK that lacks native libraries for your phone’s processor. Granting “install unknown apps” permission fixes only the first of those problems.
Before changing anything, write down your Android version, the app that opened the APK, where the APK came from, whether the app is already installed, and any complete error text. Then work through the checks below in order. This approach avoids deleting app data or weakening security when the real problem is an incompatible package.

Start with the information that identifies the failure
The wording in the graphical installer is often too general to identify a cause. Record these details before troubleshooting:

- Source app: Note whether you tapped the APK in a browser, a file manager, an email app, or another downloader.
- APK provenance: Keep the publisher or distributor name and the exact file name. Do not continue with a package whose origin you cannot verify.
- Install type: Is this a first installation, or an update to an app already on the phone?
- Complete error details: Save any text beyond “App not installed,” including a code shown by a package installer or ADB.
Those facts determine which branch applies. A permission problem is handled differently from a minimum-OS failure, and neither is fixed by repeatedly tapping Install.

Use the right diagnosis instead of treating every failure as a permission issue
| What may be wrong | Clue | Appropriate action |
|---|---|---|
| Source permission | The app that opened the APK is not allowed to install unknown apps. | Allow that specific source app, then retry. |
| Minimum Android version | The APK requires a newer platform than the phone provides. | Update Android if available or obtain a release whose minSdkVersion supports the phone. |
| Android 15 target-SDK policy | Android 15 rejects an app targeting below SDK 24; ADB may report INSTALL_FAILED_DEPRECATED_SDK_VERSION. |
Get a maintained build from the publisher. Do not try to bypass the platform block for normal use. |
| Signing or package conflict | An app is already installed, but the new APK was signed with a different certificate or represents a conflicting package variant. | Use an update signed by the original developer, or consider removal only after protecting important data. |
| Architecture (ABI) | The APK has no native library matching the phone’s processor architecture; ADB can show INSTALL_FAILED_NO_MATCHING_ABIS. |
Obtain a build containing the device’s ABI or a complete package set intended for the phone. |
| Unknown package or bundle issue | The downloaded file is incomplete, not the format expected by the installer, or lacks companion components. | Return to the trusted distributor and obtain the complete, device-appropriate package. |
There is no reliable published percentage showing how often each cause occurs, so do not assume that one explanation is the most common for your phone.
1. Confirm and grant permission to the app that opened the APK
Android 8.0 and newer
Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later grant unknown-app installation permission to a particular source app. A browser and a file manager are separate sources. If you downloaded the file in a browser but opened it from a file manager, the permission may be needed for the file manager rather than the browser.
- Open Settings.
- Use Settings search for Install unknown apps. On some manufacturer interfaces, the option is under Apps or Special app access.
- Select the app that actually opened the APK.
- Turn on Allow from this source.
- Return to that same source app and open the APK again.
Android’s documentation says this permission can be changed at any time and is intended to protect users from installations outside trusted first-party stores. Allow only the source you need; do not enable unrelated apps. If the installation still fails after the correct source is authorized, permission was not the underlying cause.
Android 7.1.1 and earlier
Older releases use the earlier Unknown sources setting or a one-time approval dialog. Settings labels and paths differ by manufacturer. If that setting appears, enable it only for the installation you intend to perform and turn it off afterward. Do not describe this older global switch as the Android 8.0-and-newer method: newer versions use per-source permission.

2. Check the phone’s Android version against the APK
An APK declares the oldest Android platform it supports through its minimum SDK requirement. The publisher, not the phone, determines that requirement. If the device is below the app’s minimum, Android can reject the package even when the download completed correctly.
- Read the Android version you recorded in Settings.
- Check the publisher’s release notes or download page for the supported Android versions, or ask the publisher which
minSdkVersionthe APK requires. - If the phone is below that minimum, install an available system update or obtain an older, official app release that explicitly supports the device.
- If no compatible release exists, stop rather than using a modified package. A different download cannot make an APK support an operating system it was not built for.
Keep this check separate from Android 15’s target-SDK policy. “Minimum SDK” describes the oldest platform on which the publisher says the app can run; “target SDK” identifies the platform behavior level the app targets. They are different compatibility conditions.
The Android 15 restriction for old target SDKs
Android 15 introduced a specific installation rule: a new installation is blocked when an app’s targetSdkVersion is lower than 24. Android’s documentation identifies the failure as INSTALL_FAILED_DEPRECATED_SDK_VERSION. This is an Android 15 rule, not a restriction that should be generalized to every Android release.
Apps that were already installed before a phone upgraded to Android 15 remain installed according to the platform documentation; the block concerns installing a new copy. For a normal user, the safe remedy is to request a maintained build from the app’s developer or choose a supported alternative. The ADB override described in Android’s testing documentation is a testing mechanism, not a consumer fix, and bypassing the platform’s protection can leave you with an unsupported app.

3. Determine whether an installed copy is blocking the update
A fresh installation and an update follow different rules. Android permits an update only when the new package is signed with a certificate that matches the certificate on the installed version. An APK from an unofficial mirror, a different package variant, or a separate developer account can therefore fail even when its name and icon look identical.
When the app is already installed
- Open the publisher’s official download or support page and obtain an update signed by the same developer as the installed app.
- Compare the package’s intended edition or variant with the one currently installed. A test, regional, or differently signed build may not be an update path for the production build.
- If the publisher confirms that the existing installation must be removed, check first whether the app synchronizes its data or provides an export/backup feature.
Uninstalling can remove local app data. The exact result depends on the app and its backup design, so do not assume that reinstalling will restore drafts, downloads, settings, or offline records. Preserve anything important before removal.
When you are unsure whether the old app is present
Search Settings > Apps for the app name and inspect disabled or work-profile entries if your phone provides them. A similarly named package can also be present for another user profile. If the package is managed by an employer or school, its administrator may control removal and updates.
4. Match the APK to the phone’s processor architecture
Some apps contain native libraries compiled for specific Android application binary interfaces (ABIs). Android documents common ABI directories including armeabi-v7a, arm64-v8a, x86, and x86_64. An APK can support the correct Android release yet still fail because it does not include a library for the phone’s ABI. Conversely, an APK can include the right ABI but require an Android version the phone does not have.

How to check the architecture question
- Find the phone’s CPU ABI in the manufacturer’s specifications or a trusted device-information utility. If the phone is managed, ask its administrator rather than installing an unknown diagnostic app.
- Ask the publisher which ABIs are included in the exact APK. A label such as “arm64” is not interchangeable with every ARM package.
- Use a build that includes the device’s ABI, or obtain the complete package set intended for that device from the trusted distributor.
- Do not extract, rename, or combine native libraries yourself. A package that is not signed and assembled by the publisher may fail verification or contain unsafe code.
When ADB reports INSTALL_FAILED_NO_MATCHING_ABIS, it is identifying an architecture mismatch, not a missing permission. Granting “Allow from this source” will not add a native library to the APK.
5. Use ADB when the graphical installer hides the reason
Android Debug Bridge (ADB) can return a specific package-installer failure where the phone’s graphical dialog shows only “App not installed.” Android’s architecture documentation describes ADB as the easiest way to test an APK and gives INSTALL_FAILED_NO_MATCHING_ABIS as an example. Treat ADB as a diagnostic route, not an all-purpose repair tool.
What you need
- A computer with Google’s Android platform-tools installed.
- A USB cable that supports data transfer and fits both the phone and computer ports; a charge-only cable will not work.
- USB debugging enabled on the phone. The setting’s location and wording vary by manufacturer and Android edition.
- The exact APK file whose provenance you have verified.
Basic diagnostic procedure
- Install or unpack platform-tools on the computer.
- Enable USB debugging, connect the phone, unlock it, and approve the computer’s authorization prompt if one appears.
- Open a terminal in the folder containing the APK and confirm that the device is visible with
adb devices. - Run
adb install path/to/app.apk, replacing the path with the actual file location. - Copy the complete output, including any
INSTALL_FAILED_...code. Do not rely on a shortened screenshot.
Use the returned code to choose the relevant branch: a deprecated target SDK points to the Android 15 policy; no matching ABIs points to native-library architecture; a signature or package error points to an existing installation conflict. If ADB reports another code, give that exact text to the app publisher or device manufacturer. ADB cannot make an APK compatible with a different minimum Android version, signing certificate, or processor architecture.

Security checks before trying another download
Sideload only from a publisher or distributor you can identify and trust. A second copy from an unknown mirror may appear to solve installation while introducing malware, altered permissions, or a package signed by someone other than the developer. Do not install modified or “patched” APKs as a workaround, and do not disable broader platform protections to silence an error.

Verify that the file is complete and matches the publisher’s stated name, version, and architecture. If the distributor supplies several files, ask which complete package is intended for your phone instead of guessing. A missing companion component or an installer format unsupported by the phone can produce a generic failure that permission changes will not solve.
What to do when the checks do not resolve the error
Ask the publisher for a compatible build
Send the publisher your Android version, device model, APK file name and version, whether an older copy is installed, and the full ADB or installer error. Request a build that supports the phone’s minimum Android version and ABI and is signed to update the installed package. This is the appropriate fix when the package itself needs rebuilding.
Ask the device manufacturer or administrator
Work-managed phones, parental controls, regional firmware, and manufacturer security layers can add restrictions not visible in the generic dialog. An administrator may need to approve the source or provide the managed distribution channel. Do not remove a managed app or profile without authorization.

Stop if the source cannot be verified
If you cannot establish who published the APK, what it targets, or whether it is complete, do not keep experimenting with permissions or uninstalling the current app. The safest outcome is to use a trusted store or an official release that clearly supports the device.
A compact decision path
- Permission: Which app opened the file? Grant that app’s source permission only, then retry once.
- Operating system: Does the APK’s documented minimum Android version exceed the phone’s version? If yes, update Android or obtain a compatible release.
- Android 15 policy: Is the phone on Android 15 and does ADB report
INSTALL_FAILED_DEPRECATED_SDK_VERSION? Request a newer target-SDK build. - Existing package: Is this an update? If yes, confirm the signing certificate and package variant. Protect local data before any uninstall.
- Architecture: Does the package include the phone’s ABI? If not, obtain the correct build;
INSTALL_FAILED_NO_MATCHING_ABISconfirms this category. - Specific evidence: If the dialog remains generic, capture the ADB output and give it to the publisher or manufacturer.
The practical distinction is between a setting you can change on the phone and a package the publisher must rebuild or sign correctly. Source permission is a user-side fix. Minimum SDK, target SDK, signing, and ABI failures generally require a different official build or a supported device.
