Start with a restart, install every available Galaxy and app update, then clear the affected app’s cache. If the failure remains, test Safe mode to determine whether a downloaded app is involved. Clear app data, reset One UI Home, or factory-reset the device only when the narrower, reversible steps do not solve the problem—and back up before any reset that can erase data.
First, identify what is actually failing
“An app crashes after a One UI update” can describe several different faults. Before changing settings, record the Galaxy phone or tablet model, its One UI and Android versions, the affected app and app version, the store from which it was installed, the exact error message, and whether one app or several apps fail. Note whether the problem began immediately after the update and whether it occurs on both Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Also note what happens after launch. An app that closes before its first screen, one that freezes after sign-in, and one whose online feature fails are not necessarily the same problem. Record whether the crash is repeatable, whether it happens only after opening a particular document or camera feature, and whether the phone becomes hot or shows a system-wide slowdown. A short screen recording or a written sequence of taps can make an error report much more useful.

Run the low-risk checks first
1. Restart the Galaxy device
Restart the phone or tablet normally, then open the problem app before changing any app data. A restart clears a temporary process or memory condition without removing your settings or files. Test the exact action that used to fail, rather than only checking whether the app icon opens.
2. Install the latest Galaxy software
Open Settings and look for the device’s software-update option. Menu names and locations can differ by model and One UI version. Install an offered update, restart when prompted, and check the app again. Keep the device connected to power if the update is large, and do not interrupt an installation that is already in progress.
Write down the One UI and Android version shown in the software information screen. That version, together with the Galaxy model and region, is important when an app developer or Samsung asks which software is affected. A menu path shown for one release can be different on another release, so describe the labels you actually see instead of forcing a different sequence.
3. Update the app from its original store
Open Google Play, Galaxy Store, or the same third-party store used for the installation and install every available update for the affected app. Updating from the original store keeps the package tied to the device’s supported distribution channel. If the app cannot be found or downloaded in the store on that device, do not assume that sideloading will solve the issue: Samsung says store availability can indicate compatibility, while the exact restriction can depend on the device and region.
Check for updates while signed in to the account that originally installed the app. If an update is listed but will not install, note the wording of the store error, available storage and whether other apps can update. Do not treat an installation failure as proof that the One UI update damaged the phone; it can instead reflect an app requirement, a regional catalog rule or a temporary store problem.
Samsung also warns that “Apps written for an older version of Android may not work on recent devices.” An app that has not been updated for the Android version delivered with your One UI update may therefore remain incompatible even after you restart the device. In that situation, the practical remedy may depend on the developer releasing a compatible build; there is no universal Samsung setting that can make every older app work.
4. Check shared components when several apps crash
If multiple apps fail immediately on launch, include Google Chrome and Android System WebView in your pending-update check. Samsung documented an earlier, specific incident in which WebView-related updates resolved app crashes. That history makes these updates worth checking, but it does not establish WebView as the cause of every current crash report.

After updating those components, restart and test two unrelated apps. If only one app still fails, return to that app’s individual troubleshooting path. If many apps continue to close, capture the pattern and move to Safe mode and Samsung support rather than repeatedly clearing data from every app.
Clear an app’s cache before clearing its data
Cached files can become unusable after a system or app update. Clearing them is the least disruptive reset and normally leaves sign-ins, documents and preferences intact, although an app may take longer to open while it rebuilds its cache. It does not roll the app back to an older version and it does not repair an app that is genuinely incompatible with the new Android release.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps (the label may vary).
- Select the affected app.
- Tap Storage.
- Choose Clear cache.
- Open the app and reproduce the original action.
Use the app for long enough to repeat the original failure. A cache reset that lets the app open once but fails when you access a particular screen should be reported with that detail. If the app offers its own offline downloads, drafts or media cache, check whether those items are still present before moving on.
If the crash continues, Clear data is the next available app-level reset, but it is materially more disruptive. It can sign you out, restore the app’s settings to defaults, remove downloaded content, or delete locally stored information, depending on how that app stores data. Check that important information is synchronized or backed up and that you know the app’s sign-in details before using it. Password-manager entries, two-factor authentication codes, locally saved game progress and unsent drafts may not be recoverable from the app’s server.

- Review the app’s warning, then tap Clear data if you accept the reset.
- Launch the app, sign in again if necessary, and test it before restoring optional settings.
Samsung’s general crash guidance treats cache and data clearing as separate troubleshooting actions. Start with cache; do not clear data simply because the cache button is available. If the app stores critical information only on the device and you cannot verify a backup, pause at the cache step and contact the app developer or Samsung before proceeding.
Use the One UI Home procedure only for launcher crashes
One UI Home is the launcher that provides the home screen and app layout. Samsung’s instructions for a One UI Home crash after the One UI 6.1.1 update are narrower than the procedure for an ordinary app and should not be presented as a universal fix for every One UI version or every app. Use this sequence when the home screen, app drawer or launcher itself repeatedly stops, not merely because another app closes.
Reset app preferences first
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Reset app preferences and confirm.
Samsung says this restores conditions such as notification settings, default apps and permission restrictions. It does not erase existing app data. Because it can change which app opens a link or handles a file, review those defaults when you next use them and reselect a preferred default if needed.

Clear One UI Home cache, then data if necessary
- In Settings > Apps, open One UI Home.
- Tap Storage > Clear cache.
- Restart and test the home screen.
- If the launcher still crashes, return to One UI Home > Storage and choose Clear data.
Clearing One UI Home data is a launcher reset: it restores the home-screen layout and settings, and returns apps and related arrangements to their defaults. Photograph or otherwise record a layout you need to recreate before confirming this step. Widgets, folders, icon positions and other launcher choices may need to be set up again even though the underlying apps and their separate data are not intentionally deleted.

Test Safe mode to isolate a downloaded app
Safe mode starts the Galaxy device with downloaded apps disabled. The exact key combination or power-menu instruction varies by model and software version, so use the Safe mode procedure for your specific Galaxy device rather than applying a sequence from a different model. Some downloaded-app icons may be unavailable while Safe mode is active; that is expected and is part of the test.
- Start the device in Safe mode using the device-specific Samsung instructions.
- Open the same app or perform the same action that normally crashes.
- If the problem disappears, restart normally.
- Uninstall recently installed or recently updated downloaded apps one at a time.
- After each removal, restart or leave Safe mode as required and retest the original symptom.
Prioritize apps added or updated just before the first crash, including launchers, cleaners, security tools, overlays, keyboard replacements and automation utilities. Remove only one candidate at a time so that the test identifies a likely conflict rather than leaving you unsure which change mattered. Keep a note of each removal and result; you can reinstall an app later from its store if it was not the cause.
If the crash occurs in Safe mode as well, downloaded apps may not be the cause. Avoid deleting random apps in that case; continue with the software checks, document the behavior and escalate through Samsung support. Safe mode is an isolation test, not a repair, and a normal-mode improvement does not by itself identify which downloaded app caused the conflict.
Understand compatibility problems after a One UI upgrade
A One UI update also moves the device to a particular Android release and changes system components that apps depend on. An app built for an older Android target may not function on the newer software. This is an application-maintenance problem, not proof that the Galaxy hardware is defective.
- App available and updated: install the current store version, then clear its cache if it still closes.
- App available but no update exists: the developer may not yet support the Android version on the device. Samsung’s support pages do not provide a universal compatibility matrix for every app, model and region, so avoid assuming a guaranteed fix.
- App absent or blocked in the store: Samsung identifies store availability as a useful compatibility clue, but regional catalog rules and device requirements can also affect what appears.
- Only network-dependent features fail: compare Wi-Fi and mobile-data behavior and record the result for the app developer or Samsung support; a launch crash and a connection failure require different diagnosis.
Compatibility is not binary in every case. An app may launch but fail when it requests a permission, opens a particular file type or uses a system interface changed by Android. Describe the first failing action, not just “it is incompatible.” Also distinguish a store listing that says the app is unavailable from an app that was installed previously but is now crashing; those clues can point to different requirements.
Do not infer a universal deadline from one app’s behavior. Regional availability, the Galaxy model, Android version and the developer’s release schedule all matter. If the store offers no compatible version, the app developer is the party that can confirm support; Samsung support can still help determine whether the wider system is behaving normally.

When to reinstall or seek help
After updating, restarting and trying the cache reset, reinstalling the app from its original store can replace damaged application files. Before uninstalling, verify that the app’s important information is synchronized or exported; uninstalling can remove data kept only on the device. If the app is unavailable in the store after removal, you may not be able to reinstall it on that Galaxy device.
Reinstall only after recording the app version, store source and any error message. If the problem returns immediately on a clean installation while other apps work, that is useful evidence of an app-specific defect or compatibility limitation. If several apps fail after reinstalling one of them, stop repeating the cycle and investigate shared components or system behavior instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a persistent crash, send an error report through the Samsung Members app or ask Samsung support for assistance. Include the model, One UI and Android versions, app version, store source, exact message, time the issue began, Safe mode result and the steps already attempted. Add whether the problem occurs on Wi-Fi, mobile data or both, and whether it affects one app or several. Samsung Members is an official channel for reporting unusual behavior rather than guessing at a hidden setting.
Keep the report factual and include a reproducible sequence, such as “open app, tap account, select attachment, app closes.” Avoid claiming that a particular component is responsible unless the test supports it. Support may request logs or additional tests; follow the device-specific instructions they provide.
Keep a factory reset as the last resort
A factory reset is not established as a required remedy for a typical post-update app crash. It removes device data, so use it only after reversible checks and support escalation have failed and after you have verified a complete backup. A reset also takes time to restore accounts, apps and preferences, so it is not a quick substitute for identifying an incompatible app.
- Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator information, documents and app-specific data.
- Confirm that you know the Google and Samsung account credentials needed after setup.
- Check that the backup actually completed and contains the information you need.
- Follow the reset path shown for your exact Galaxy model and software version.
Samsung explicitly warns that a factory reset deletes device data. If the problem began immediately after an update and survives Safe mode, an error report gives Samsung more useful diagnostic information than repeatedly resetting the device. If support does recommend a reset, ask what evidence led to that recommendation and what backup or account-verification steps are required before starting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical decision path
- One app only: restart, update the device and app, verify store availability, clear cache, then weigh the data-loss risk of clearing data or reinstalling.
- Several apps: install all app updates, including Chrome and Android System WebView, restart and test again before resetting individual apps.
- Launcher or home-screen crash after One UI 6.1.1: follow Samsung’s One UI Home sequence—reset app preferences, clear cache, then clear One UI Home data only if required.
- Symptom absent in Safe mode: remove recent downloaded apps one by one until the behavior is isolated.
- Symptom persists in Safe mode or after the supported resets: submit a Samsung Members error report or contact Samsung support.
- Considering a factory reset: treat it as a final measure, complete and verify a backup, and recognize that it erases the device.
No special cable, replacement phone or paid utility is required for this diagnostic sequence. The supported first steps use the Galaxy’s built-in settings, the app’s original store, Safe mode and Samsung Members. Consider a repair provider only when Samsung support identifies a hardware or service issue; a normal post-update app crash does not by itself establish that paid repair is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does an app close as soon as I open it after a One UI update?
Restart the Galaxy device, install all Galaxy and app updates, and clear the app’s cache. If several apps close, also update Google Chrome and Android System WebView. If only one app fails and it remains broken after those steps, it may target an older Android version or have damaged app data.
How do I know whether the app is incompatible with my Galaxy?
Check whether the app is available and installable in the store on that Galaxy, note the Android and One UI versions, and look for an app update. Samsung says apps written for older Android versions may not work on recent devices. Store absence is a clue, not a complete diagnosis, because device and regional rules also affect availability.
Will clearing an app’s cache delete my photos, files or login?
Cache clearing is the lower-risk reset and normally leaves sign-ins, documents and preferences intact, although the app rebuilds temporary files. Clearing data is different: it can sign you out, restore defaults and remove locally stored information. Verify synchronization and backups before clearing data.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShould I clear app data before clearing cache?
No. Start with cache because it is less disruptive. Use clear data only when the cache reset and updates fail, and only after reading the warning and confirming that important local information can be restored.
What does Safe mode tell me?
Safe mode disables downloaded apps. If the crash disappears there, a recently installed or updated downloaded app is a likely cause; remove candidates one at a time and retest. If the crash remains, downloaded apps may not be responsible, so continue system checks and contact Samsung.
Is resetting One UI Home the same as resetting the whole phone?
No. The One UI Home procedure is limited to the launcher. Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1 guidance says to reset app preferences first, then clear One UI Home cache and, if needed, its data. Clearing launcher data resets the home-screen layout and settings, not the entire device, but you should record a layout you want to recreate.
Do I need a factory reset after a One UI update?
Not for a typical app crash based on Samsung’s guidance. Try reversible checks, Safe mode and support escalation first. A factory reset deletes device data, so use it only as a last resort after a verified backup and clear advice for your exact model.
What should I include in a Samsung Members error report?
Include the Galaxy model, One UI and Android versions, affected app and version, installation store, exact error or reproducible steps, when the issue began, whether one or several apps fail, Wi-Fi versus mobile-data behavior, Safe mode results and every step already attempted.
Can reinstalling an app fix a post-update crash?
It can replace damaged application files after you update, restart and clear cache. Confirm that important app data is synchronized first, because uninstalling may remove local information. If the app is no longer available in the store, you might not be able to reinstall it on that device.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the scope first, then use the least disruptive sequence: restart, update Galaxy software and the original app, check Chrome and WebView when several apps crash, clear cache, and test Safe mode. Reserve app-data or One UI Home resets for the matching problem, and treat factory reset as a final, fully backed-up step. Persistent or unusual behavior belongs in a Samsung Members report with complete version and symptom details.
