Then check two separate controls: the phone’s global Location setting and that provider app’s location permission. On Android 12 and later, enable precise location for the provider when you want a current-location widget. If you want a permanent city, select that city in the widget or weather app instead. Finally, compare the widget with the provider app and use that provider’s own refresh or re-add procedure.
Start by identifying the widget provider
Android does not use one universal weather-widget settings screen. A Samsung Weather widget, an AccuWeather widget, Google’s weather display or Pixel At a Glance, and a widget from another downloaded app can all have different controls. The permission that matters is the permission for the app actually supplying the widget.

To identify it, long-press the widget and look for Settings, Widget settings, App info or a provider name. You can also open the widget’s weather app from the app drawer and compare the place shown there with the home-screen widget. Do not change settings in an unrelated weather app: they will not control a widget powered by another provider.

Some Google weather displays are integrated into the launcher, so there may be no obvious standalone weather-widget app. In that case, inspect the Google app and launcher settings rather than installing another weather app and assuming it controls the existing display.

Decide whether the widget should follow you or show one city
“Wrong location” can mean two different configurations:
- Current location: the widget should follow the phone as you travel.
- Selected city: the widget should always show a chosen place, regardless of where the phone is.
For a selected city, open the widget’s own settings or the provider app’s location list and choose the desired city. A current-location permission cannot make a fixed-city widget follow you, and a manually selected city will not change when you move.
Samsung documents that its Weather widget uses the current location by default but also lets you add a location in the widget. Other providers use different labels, so look for Location, Manage locations, Edit locations or a city name rather than assuming the same menu exists everywhere.
A simple test is to write down the city selected in the provider app, then walk through the widget setup again. If the same city remains selected after you expected current location, the widget is configured correctly for a fixed place but not for travel. If the city changes in the app but not on the home screen, continue with the refresh steps below.
Check the weather provider’s app permission
Android controls location at both the device level and the individual-app level. Enabling Location on the phone does not automatically give a weather provider access, and granting the app access does not turn on the phone’s global Location switch.
- Open Settings.
- Open Apps, App info or the equivalent list on your device.
- Select the app that supplies the widget.
- Tap Permissions, then Location.
- Choose an access level that fits the widget. Android may offer Allow all the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or Don’t allow; the exact choices vary by Android version and app.
- For a current-location widget on Android 12 or later, turn on Use precise location when that separate option is available.
Do not grant all-the-time access by default. Use the least access that allows the particular widget to update as intended and matches your privacy preference. A weather app that updates only when opened may work with “while using the app,” while a widget designed to update in the background may document a different requirement. If Android offers “Ask every time,” repeated prompts can prevent a widget from refreshing until you answer, so choose an option you can use consistently.
Google describes approximate location as an area of about 3 square kilometers and precise location as the device’s exact location. Those figures explain permission granularity; they do not promise that a forecast will be calculated for a unique point or that a displayed town name will match your street. Approximate access can therefore be sufficient for a broad city forecast, while precise access is the more appropriate test when the widget is supposed to follow your current position.

After changing permission, open the provider app once. This gives Android and the provider an opportunity to request or use the new setting. Then return to the home screen and allow the widget’s normal update cycle before deciding that the change failed.
Turn on device Location and review Location Accuracy
- Open Settings > Location.
- Turn on Use location. Some manufacturers place this switch under Security and privacy or a similarly named section.
- On supported devices, open Location services or Location Accuracy and review the setting.
With Google Play services on supported devices, Location Accuracy can combine GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points, cellular towers and device sensors. Combining signals can produce a location more quickly or reliably indoors, near tall buildings or where GPS has a poor view of the sky. Available signals and menu names differ by device, Android release and manufacturer.
Location Accuracy is a device-level service; it is separate from the per-app precise-location switch introduced for apps on Android 12. A weather provider can have precise permission while device Location is off, or Location Accuracy can be enabled while the provider has only approximate permission. Both layers need to be appropriate for the result you want.
Location Accuracy is not a promise that every provider will display the nearest street or neighborhood. It describes how Android estimates the device’s position. The weather service may then associate that position with a nearby city, forecast point or other label. Treat the setting as a way to improve the phone’s estimate, not as a guarantee about the wording on the widget.
Check the place inside the provider app
Open the weather app that powers the widget and inspect its complete location view. Look for the active city, a location list or a map-based position. If the app itself has the correct place but the home-screen widget does not, the problem is probably a stale widget state or provider-specific configuration rather than the phone’s location estimate.
If both the app and widget show the same unwanted city, change the selected city or correct the app permission before recreating the widget. If the app names a nearby town, that alone does not prove the phone is mislocated. Forecast services may use a nearby forecast point, and the available evidence does not establish that every locality receives a distinct forecast location. Compare the named place with the provider’s full location details before changing settings.
Compare more than the headline temperature. Check the provider app’s city name, location list and any map or address details. A one-degree difference or a different update time can be a forecast disagreement rather than a location error. If the app and widget identify the same place but show different conditions, focus on refresh timing and provider support instead of repeatedly changing permissions.

Provider-specific fixes
Samsung Weather widget
Samsung’s instructions apply to Samsung’s own Weather widget, not to every Android widget. Long-press the widget, open its widget settings and use the location controls to add or select the city you want. If the widget is set to current location, confirm the Samsung weather app has location permission and that device Location is enabled. Samsung’s support pages can show region-specific wording and layouts, so a menu may not have exactly the same name on every Galaxy model.
If several cities are saved, verify which one is marked active. Adding a city does not necessarily make it the city displayed on the home screen; the widget may still be set to current location or another saved entry. Make the intended selection in the widget itself, then check the result in the Samsung Weather app.
AccuWeather widget
AccuWeather’s FAQ recommends deleting the old widget, adding it again and selecting a location for cases involving its redesigned widget or a widget that will not display correctly. To follow that procedure, long-press the AccuWeather widget, remove it, open the home-screen widget picker, add the AccuWeather widget again and choose the requested location during setup.
The same FAQ also suggests updating the app, reinstalling it or rebooting the phone when the widget remains broken, then contacting AccuWeather support if the issue continues. These are AccuWeather’s recommendations for its app and can change as the app is updated; they are not a universal Android reset procedure. Reinstalling may require you to sign in again or restore saved locations, so try the permission and location-selection checks first.
Google weather display or Pixel At a Glance
Google’s weather display and Pixel At a Glance can be integrated into the launcher rather than installed as a separate widget with an obvious app icon. Check the Google app or the launcher’s own settings and review the Google app’s location permission. On Android 12 or later, check whether precise location is available for that app. Pixel user-community discussions include reports of wrong temperatures and suggestions to review precise permission, but community reports are anecdotal and do not establish a guaranteed fix. If the Google app shows the correct place while At a Glance does not, treat it as a display-refresh or launcher issue and use Google’s current support options rather than changing unrelated weather apps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOther downloaded weather apps
For another provider, use the same order: identify the app, decide between current location and a fixed city, check its permission and then follow its own widget instructions. The wording may differ, and some apps may not offer every permission choice available on another Android version. Do not assume an AccuWeather re-add sequence or Samsung menu applies to a different provider.
Refresh or recreate the widget carefully
Once permissions and the intended city are correct, use reversible refresh steps before clearing data:

- Open the provider app and confirm it can load the intended location and current conditions.
- Return to the home screen and wait for the widget’s normal update cycle, especially after enabling Location or changing permission.
- Long-press the widget and choose Remove or Delete.
- Open the widget picker, select the same provider and add the widget again.
- Choose the current-location option or a fixed city during setup, if prompted.
- If the provider documents an update, install the latest app version and restart the phone.
Removing and re-adding a widget usually changes only the home-screen instance. Clearing app data, changing battery restrictions or reinstalling can sign you out, erase saved cities or reset other preferences, so do those only when the provider specifically recommends them and you are prepared to configure the app again. Android has no verified, universal cache-clearing recipe that fixes every wrong-location widget.
If the widget is missing from the picker, first confirm that the provider app is installed and updated. A reboot or reinstall is appropriate only when that provider recommends it, particularly if reinstalling could remove saved locations or account settings.

Common pitfalls to avoid
- Changing the wrong app: a second weather app cannot control Samsung Weather, Google At a Glance or another provider’s widget.
- Checking only one location layer: the phone’s Location switch and the provider’s app permission are separate controls.
- Confusing precise permission with Location Accuracy: Android 12’s per-app precise option and the device-level accuracy service do different jobs.
- Assuming a nearby town proves failure: the displayed name may represent the provider’s forecast point rather than the exact device address.
- Granting maximum access automatically: all-the-time permission is not a universal requirement and has privacy implications.
- Clearing data too soon: destructive resets can remove saved cities or sign you out when a location selection or widget re-add would have been enough.
Android version, device and privacy qualifications
- Permission screens and labels vary by Android version and manufacturer. Google’s location-permission guidance notes that some Pixel instructions apply only to Android 11 and later.
- Android 12 and later provide a separate per-app precise-location control. Older versions may present different choices.
- Location Accuracy is available only on supported devices and depends on device services, including Google Play services where applicable.
- Samsung’s Weather instructions apply to Samsung’s widget; regional Samsung support pages can use different wording.
- AccuWeather’s widget design and troubleshooting steps may change when the app is redesigned or updated.
- Approximate and precise permissions describe how much location information an app receives. They are not a measurement of forecast resolution or a guarantee that a service will display your exact neighborhood.
When to contact the provider
Contact the widget provider after you have confirmed the intended city, enabled the appropriate device and app settings, checked the provider app itself and completed the provider’s documented refresh steps. Include your phone model, Android version, provider app version, whether the app and widget disagree, and whether the issue occurs only indoors or while travelling. That information helps distinguish a permission problem from a provider-side location or update problem.
There is no accessory, weather instrument or general phone-repair tool that can correct a widget’s selected city or app permission. The practical fixes are configuration changes, provider-specific location selection and, when necessary, recreating or updating the widget.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Android weather widget show a nearby town instead of my exact location?
A nearby town name does not by itself prove that Android located the phone incorrectly. Weather services can associate a device position with a nearby forecast point. Compare the provider app’s full location details with the widget before changing permissions.
Do I need to allow a weather app to access my location all the time?
Not automatically. Android may offer all-the-time, while-in-use, ask-every-time or denied access. Choose the least access that works for that provider and matches your privacy preference; check the provider’s own documented requirement for background updates.

Precise location is a per-app permission available on Android 12 and later. Location Accuracy is a device-level service that can combine GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular and sensor signals on supported devices. They are separate settings and may both matter for a current-location widget.
Best Value
How do I make a widget show one city permanently?
Open the widget’s settings or the provider app’s location list and select the desired city. Samsung documents adding a city in its Weather widget. A fixed-city selection will not change when you travel.
Should I delete and reinstall my weather app first?
No. First verify the provider, city selection, app permission and device Location setting. If the provider recommends it, update, reboot, remove and re-add the widget, or reinstall the app. Reinstallation can remove saved preferences or require another sign-in.
The weather app is correct but the home-screen widget is wrong. What should I do?
Treat that as a stale widget or provider-specific display problem. Confirm the app’s location, wait for an update, then remove and re-add the same provider’s widget. Follow that provider’s documented troubleshooting steps.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does the widget change only after I open the weather app?
Review the provider’s location permission, especially whether it is limited to while-in-use or asks every time. Open the app after changing permission, then check whether the provider documents background updating. Do not grant broader access than you are comfortable with.
Can a phone accessory or weather instrument fix the wrong widget location?
No. This is a software configuration issue. The relevant fixes are Android location settings, the provider app’s permission, a selected city, or provider-specific widget refresh and reinstallation steps.
The Bottom Line
Identify the app behind the widget, decide between current location and a fixed city, then check both device Location and that app’s permission. On Android 12+, review precise location; on supported devices, consider Location Accuracy. If the provider app is correct but the widget is stale, remove and re-add it using the provider’s instructions.
