How to Fix Android Text Messages That Aren’t Sending

Start by identifying which route is failing: ordinary SMS, photo or group MMS, Google Messages RCS chat, one recipient, every recipient, or a recently changed phone, app, or SIM. Then check the matching setting. For most failures, the fix is restoring connectivity, making Google Messages the default app, correcting the recipient or SIM, resetting MMS access-point settings, repairing RCS registration, or asking the carrier to correct service or provisioning.

First, identify what is actually failing

Android messaging uses more than one delivery system. SMS is a plain text message sent through the mobile network. MMS carries photos, videos, or group messages and needs mobile data. RCS chats use Wi-Fi or mobile data and require compatible participants plus support from the device, carrier, and region. A failure in one route does not automatically mean the phone itself is defective.

What fails Most likely route Best first check
Every one-to-one text, including short plain messages SMS or basic phone service Signal, airplane mode, SIM, default app, and carrier plan
Only photos, videos, or group messages MMS Mobile-data connection, APN settings, and group-message configuration
Only conversations marked as chat or RCS RCS RCS status, internet access, and carrier/device eligibility
Only one person Recipient-specific issue Number, country code, and block list
Failure began after changing phones or apps Registration or transition issue iMessage deactivation or old RCS registration
Only one line on a dual-SIM phone SIM routing Selected messaging line and data-SIM assignment

Send one short text to a known working contact after each major change. That test separates a fixed problem from a problem that still needs attention without changing several variables at once.

  1. Check cellular service. Look at the signal indicator and move to an area with reliable reception if it is empty or shows an emergency-only state. Turn airplane mode off. If airplane mode was already off, switch it on briefly, wait, and switch it off to make the phone re-register with the network.
  2. Confirm the active messaging app. Install the latest available update for Google Messages from Google Play. Open Android settings and verify Google Messages is the default SMS app; the path is commonly Settings > Apps > Default apps > SMS app, although wording differs by Android build. Another messaging app can intercept the send action or prevent Google Messages from completing setup.
  3. Reseat or recheck the SIM. Power the phone off, remove the SIM if your model has a removable card, check that it is aligned correctly, and insert it again. For an eSIM, open the SIM settings and confirm that the line is enabled. Do not assume a new physical accessory is required; Google’s general troubleshooting steps begin with service, settings, and SIM checks.
  4. Verify that the plan permits messaging. A suspended account, exhausted prepaid balance, inactive line, or plan that does not include the attempted message type can block sending even when the phone shows signal. Check the account with your carrier. Carrier names, plan rules, and outage information differ by country and are not universal Android settings.
  5. Restart after changes. A restart reloads the default-app assignment, SIM registration, and messaging service. It is useful after an update or SIM change, but it will not correct a carrier-side suspension or an unsupported RCS configuration.

If a plain text still fails to every recipient after these checks, continue with the carrier and account checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling apps. The failure is likely outside the message composer.

When only one person cannot receive your texts

A one-contact failure points away from a general network outage. Open the conversation and inspect the destination number character by character.

  • Confirm the number is current and has no extra digits, punctuation, or missing area code.
  • If you are texting internationally or while traveling, include the complete country code in international format. A number that works locally may fail when saved without the required country prefix.
  • Open the contact and the conversation details to verify that neither the contact nor the number is blocked. Remove the block only if you recognize and trust the recipient.
  • Start a new conversation by entering the number manually instead of selecting an old thread. A stale contact record can preserve an obsolete number or an old RCS identity.

Send a short plain text rather than a photo while testing. If SMS reaches that person but a photo does not, the contact is not the problem; follow the MMS steps below.

Fix photo, video, and group-message failures

Restore the data path for MMS

MMS requires a mobile-data connection even when ordinary texts work. Turn mobile data on and test while disconnected from Wi-Fi, because a phone can have Wi-Fi internet while its cellular data service is disabled or unavailable. If data is restricted for the messaging app, remove that restriction in the app’s mobile-data settings.

Google recommends restoring the carrier’s access-point-name (APN) settings to their defaults when MMS will not send. Menu labels vary, but a common route is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Access Point Names, followed by the menu option to reset APNs to default. Select the APN supplied by the carrier after the reset if more than one appears. Do not copy values from an unrelated carrier or country; APN details are provider-specific.

Check the message itself

  • Try a small image first. A very large attachment, unsupported format, or multiple videos can exceed the carrier’s MMS limits.
  • Send the same image to one recipient. If one-to-one MMS works but a group does not, the issue is group configuration rather than the attachment alone.
  • In Google Messages, check the conversation’s group-messaging setting. When group replies arrive as separate one-to-one threads, the phone may be using a setting that does not send or receive the group as MMS.

Carrier limits and group-MMS behavior vary by plan and region. If APN defaults, mobile data, and the group setting are correct but every MMS fails, ask the carrier whether MMS is enabled on the line.

Repair an RCS chat that will not send

RCS is the chat mode in Google Messages. It travels over Wi-Fi or mobile data rather than the traditional SMS path. Both participants need a supported setup, and availability can depend on the device, Android version, carrier, and country. A phone can therefore send SMS while RCS remains unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the RCS status

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initials.
  3. Choose Messages settings, then RCS chats (the label may appear as Chat features in some versions).
  4. Read the status. A connected or active status indicates that registration completed. A connecting, verifying, or unavailable status identifies the next issue to resolve.

Make sure the phone has working Wi-Fi or mobile data. RCS activation also relies on SMS verification, so the phone must be able to receive the verification message. Google Messages must remain the default texting app while activation is attempted, and the app and Android release must meet the service’s requirements.

Use SMS or MMS fallback deliberately

Google Messages can resend a chat as SMS or MMS when RCS is unavailable, depending on the resend setting. In the RCS settings, look for the option governing automatic resend as text and choose the behavior that matches your preference. A fallback text may lose chat-only features such as read receipts, typing indicators, high-resolution media handling, or Wi-Fi delivery, but it can get a basic message through when RCS cannot connect.

Do not repeatedly toggle RCS without a reason

Turning RCS off and back on can change registration and may remove you from existing group chats, according to Google’s RCS guidance. Check the status and internet connection first. If the status says the carrier has disabled RCS, toggling the switch will not override that restriction; contact the carrier and ask whether RCS is supported and provisioned for your number.

Interpret common RCS outcomes

  • SMS works, RCS does not for every contact: investigate RCS eligibility, status, internet access, and carrier support.
  • RCS works with some people but not another: the other participant may not have RCS enabled or supported. Use the SMS/MMS fallback setting or send a normal text.
  • RCS stopped after a phone or app change: old registration may still be associated with the previous device or app. Follow the transition steps in the next section.

After switching from an iPhone, Android phone, or messaging app

Moving from iPhone

Deactivate iMessage for the phone number that you moved to Android. If the old iPhone is available, turn off iMessage and FaceTime before removing the SIM. If it is not available, use Apple’s number-deregistration process or ask Apple support to remove the number from iMessage. This prevents other Apple users’ messages from continuing to route to Apple’s service instead of arriving as SMS on Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After deactivation, restart the Android phone and ask one iPhone contact to send a new plain text. Existing conversation history may still display an old route, so testing a new message helps distinguish routing from a damaged thread.

Moving between Android devices or messaging apps

RCS registration can remain tied to the previous device or app. Make the new app the default SMS app, complete its RCS setup, and allow time for the number to verify. If the old device is still usable, disable RCS there before activating it on the new phone. If it is unavailable, use the account or deactivation option provided by the messaging service rather than repeatedly switching the setting on the new phone.

Do not erase the old phone until ordinary SMS works on the new one. Keep the old SIM or eSIM information available while checking which line owns the number, especially if the move involved a number transfer.

Check dual-SIM routing

With two active lines, the phone can use one SIM for calls, another for data, and a different default for SMS. A mismatch can make a message appear to fail even though one line has service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs (the exact path depends on the manufacturer).
  2. Identify which line should send the text and confirm that line is enabled.
  3. In the messaging app, choose the intended SIM when the compose screen offers a SIM selector. Set the preferred SMS line if your phone provides that option.
  4. For RCS, verify that the SIM used for calls is configured as the data SIM. Google’s RCS FAQ specifically directs dual-SIM users to check this relationship during troubleshooting.
  5. Temporarily disable the other line only as a controlled test, then send a short SMS. Re-enable it after the test.

If one line sends successfully while the other does not, the problem belongs to that line’s service, plan, or provisioning. Record the line’s number and carrier before contacting support.

Know when the carrier must intervene

Contact the carrier when the phone passes the device checks but messages still fail, or when Google Messages reports that RCS is disabled by the carrier. Ask support to verify all of the following for the affected line:

  • voice and SMS service is active and not suspended;
  • the plan or prepaid balance permits SMS and MMS;
  • MMS is enabled and the carrier’s APN profile is correct;
  • the line is permitted to use RCS in your country and on your plan;
  • there is no current outage, fraud block, roaming restriction, or recent number-porting hold.

Give the carrier a precise symptom: “plain SMS fails to every recipient,” “only MMS fails,” or “RCS status says unavailable.” Mention whether mobile data works, whether another SIM can send from the phone, and whether the problem began after a device change. Those details help support distinguish account provisioning from handset configuration.

Carrier support channels and menu names differ by region, so a universal support number or setting cannot be stated. Use the support method shown in your carrier account or bill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A focused decision path

Use this order when you want the shortest route to a diagnosis:

  1. Send a short plain text to a known working contact. If it fails, perform the signal, airplane-mode, default-app, SIM, and plan checks.
  2. Send the same text to a second contact. If only one fails, correct that contact’s number, country code, or block status.
  3. Send a small photo with mobile data on. If text works but the photo fails, reset APNs to default and check MMS and group settings.
  4. Inspect the conversation label. If it is an RCS chat, open the RCS settings page and read its status before changing anything.
  5. Review recent changes. After an iPhone move, deactivate iMessage. After an app or Android-device move, address old RCS registration.
  6. Review SIM selection. On a dual-SIM phone, align the messaging line, call line, and data SIM as required for the test and for RCS.
  7. Escalate with evidence. If the relevant route still fails, give the carrier the message type, affected recipients, SIM line, and exact RCS status.

What not to do

  • Do not assume that replacing the phone, buying a signal booster, or purchasing a new SIM is a general fix. The supported checks begin with connectivity, app selection, SIM state, message settings, and carrier service.
  • Do not reset APNs with values copied from another provider. A wrong APN can disrupt mobile data as well as MMS.
  • Do not repeatedly toggle RCS while group chats are active. The change can remove you from groups and does not solve a carrier-disabled status.
  • Do not test only with a large video or a complex group. Start with a short SMS, then a small MMS, so each delivery route is isolated.
  • Do not keep resending a message that may contain sensitive information while troubleshooting. Confirm whether it eventually delivered before sending duplicates.

When the problem is resolved

Confirm the repair with three separate tests: a plain SMS to one contact, a small MMS if you use media messaging, and an RCS chat if your carrier and contacts support it. On a dual-SIM phone, repeat the tests with the intended line selected. If only RCS remains unavailable while SMS and MMS work, leave RCS disabled or use the documented SMS/MMS fallback until the carrier confirms support and provisioning.
