If your Android position is wrong or keeps jumping in Google Maps, start with the software checks Google lists: turn off Battery Saver, confirm Location is on and Airplane mode is off, enable Wi‑Fi or mobile data, and test outside or where the phone has a clearer signal. A blue-dot beam that points the wrong way needs compass calibration; a stale, gray, or broadly inaccurate dot needs connectivity, Location Accuracy, and app-permission checks. Restart the phone if the problem remains.
First, identify what the blue dot is telling you
Open Google Maps and tap the location button. Do not judge accuracy only by the dot itself; look at its color and the circle or beam around it.

- Small light-blue circle: Maps has a relatively confident estimate. The phone may still be a few meters away from the actual position, but the estimated area is narrow.
- Large light-blue circle: Your actual position could be anywhere inside that circle. The phone has a location estimate, but confidence is low.
- Gray dot, missing dot, or a dot that does not update: Maps may not be able to determine a current position and may be showing the last location it knew.
- Wide or misdirected blue beam: The position estimate may be usable, but the phone’s directional sensor needs calibration.
- Dot that repeatedly moves between places: Check Battery Saver first, then Location, connectivity, signal conditions, Location Accuracy, and the affected app’s permission.
A location dot is an estimate, not a photograph of your exact position. Buildings, roofs, parking structures, underground areas, and other obstructions can reduce satellite reception. Android can supplement satellite information with nearby Wi‑Fi access points, cellular network signals, and device sensors, so the estimate can change as the signals available to the phone change.

Use this symptom-to-fix guide
| What you see | Most relevant checks | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The dot jumps around on the map | Turn off Battery Saver; then check Location, Airplane mode, Wi‑Fi or mobile data, and signal conditions. | Google Maps specifically lists Battery Saver as the first remedy for this symptom. |
| The dot is gray, absent, or stuck at an earlier place | Turn on Location, turn off Airplane mode, enable Wi‑Fi or mobile data, and move to an area with a clearer GPS or Wi‑Fi signal. | Maps may be showing a last known location when it cannot obtain a current fix. |
| The circle around the dot is very large | Check Location Accuracy, app permission, and the surrounding signal environment. | A large circle means the estimate is uncertain. |
| The dot is near you but the beam points the wrong way | Calibrate the compass by moving the phone in a figure eight. | Compass calibration corrects direction; it does not replace a current location fix. |
| Several apps are inaccurate, including outdoors | Check device-wide Location Accuracy, restart, and seek model-specific manufacturer support if it continues. | One permission setting in one app cannot explain a failure across every app. |
Step 1: Turn off Battery Saver
Google Maps’ exact troubleshooting entry for “Location jumps around on the map” is to turn off Battery Saver mode. Battery-saving behavior can limit or delay location updates, so this is the quickest test when the dot is moving unpredictably.

- Open your phone’s quick settings or the battery settings screen.
- Turn off Battery Saver (the label can vary by device maker).
- Return to Google Maps, tap the location button, and watch whether the dot settles.
If the dot becomes stable, Battery Saver was affecting the updates. You can leave it off while navigation or location-sensitive work is important, then re-enable it later when you no longer need frequent location updates. If the dot still jumps, continue with the checks below rather than assuming the phone has a hardware fault.
Step 2: Verify the phone-wide switches
Make sure Location is on
Android has a device-wide Location switch. If it is off, Maps and other apps cannot obtain a current device location through Android’s location services. Open Settings > Location and turn Location on. On some phones the same control is also available in quick settings.
Turn Airplane mode off
Airplane mode can disable the wireless connections that help Android estimate a position. Open quick settings and confirm that Airplane mode is off. If you intentionally use Airplane mode, turn it off long enough to test Maps again.

Turn on Wi‑Fi or mobile data and test again. Android can use nearby Wi‑Fi access points and cellular network signals in addition to GPS. A network connection is particularly useful indoors or near large buildings, where satellite signals can be obscured. You do not need to connect to a particular Wi‑Fi network for nearby wireless information to be useful, but the phone’s wireless hardware must be available and enabled.
Step 3: Test in a place with a clearer signal
Take the phone outdoors, away from tall buildings, covered parking, and underground spaces, then wait for Maps to update. Indoor rooms, parking structures, and underground locations can weaken or block satellite reception. Even outdoors, a narrow street between tall buildings can produce a less certain estimate than an open area.
Move slowly for a short test rather than driving immediately. Watch whether the uncertainty circle shrinks and whether the dot remains near you. If the location is accurate in an open outdoor area but poor in one building or garage, the environment is the likely limitation. Wi‑Fi and cellular signals may improve the estimate in those places, but they cannot guarantee a precise position in every structure.

Step 4: Check Android’s Location Accuracy setting
Device-wide Location Accuracy is separate from an individual app’s permission. It controls whether Android can combine multiple signal and sensor sources to estimate the device’s position.
Android 12 and later
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Open Location Services.
- Tap Location Accuracy.
- Turn on Improve Location Accuracy.
Android 11 and earlier
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Tap Advanced.
- Open Location Accuracy.
- Turn on Improve Location Accuracy.
Menu names and their exact placement can differ by manufacturer. Search Settings for “Location Accuracy” if the listed path is not identical on your phone.
When enabled and available, Android’s Location Accuracy service combines GPS, nearby Wi‑Fi access points, cellular network signals, and sensor data such as accelerometer, barometer, and gyroscope readings. Google describes this as a way to estimate location “more quickly and accurately,” especially indoors or where GPS is unavailable or obscured. Not every phone has the same radios or sensors, so the available sources and resulting accuracy vary by model.
After changing the setting, return to Maps and tap the location button again. Give the phone a moment to obtain a new estimate; compare the size of the uncertainty circle rather than expecting the dot to snap instantly to a single exact point.
Step 5: Check the affected app’s precise-location permission
An app can have its own approximate-versus-precise choice, especially on Android 12 and later. This is a different control from device-wide Location Accuracy. Location Accuracy can be enabled while an app is still limited to approximate location.

- Approximate location: Android gives the app an area rather than the most exact position it can provide.
- Precise location: Android allows the app to access a more exact location when the phone can determine one.
A mapping or turn-by-turn task generally needs precise access to place the dot and route correctly. If only one app is wrong while other apps locate you normally, inspect that app’s permission first.

Review the permission
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location, then open the app-permission or app-location section shown on your phone.
- Select the affected app.
- Choose the location option that permits use of your location and, on Android 12 and later, enable Use precise location when the task requires it.
Android’s labels vary by version and manufacturer. The important distinction is that an app’s approximate/precise choice is not the same as the phone’s Location Accuracy switch. Check both when a map remains broadly inaccurate.
Step 6: Calibrate the compass when direction is wrong
Compass calibration is for a different symptom: the dot is broadly near you, but the blue beam is wide, rotates unexpectedly, or points in the wrong direction. It does not repair a stale dot, a missing fix, or a large uncertainty circle caused by weak signals.
- Open Google Maps and tap the location button.
- Hold the phone normally and move it through a figure-eight motion several times.
- Stop when the blue beam narrows and points in the direction you are facing.
Maps may display an on-screen calibration prompt. On devices and map imagery that support it, the prompt can include a camera-based calibration option. Availability depends on the phone and the supported map features, so not every device will show the same prompt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAfter calibration, walk a short distance and check the beam again. If the beam is correct but the dot still jumps or sits in the wrong place, return to Battery Saver, connectivity, Location Accuracy, and permission checks; repeating the figure eight will not fix those problems.
Step 7: Restart and reassess
Restart the Android phone or tablet after completing the checks above. A restart gives location services and the affected app a clean start and is part of Google’s Maps troubleshooting guidance.
- Save any work and close the affected app.
- Use the device’s power menu to choose Restart.
- After the phone starts, confirm Location is on, Airplane mode is off, and the needed network connection is available.
- Open Maps outdoors, tap the location button, and compare the dot and uncertainty circle.
Record what changed: whether the dot is gray or blue, the approximate size of the circle, whether the beam is misdirected, and whether the problem occurs in one app or several. Those observations make the next support conversation more useful.

Why Android location can change from one moment to the next
Android does not rely on a single sensor. GPS can provide a strong outdoor reference, while Wi‑Fi access points and cellular towers can help when satellite signals are weak or blocked. Accelerometer, barometer, and gyroscope data can also contribute to the estimate. As the phone moves between rooms, streets, towers, access points, and open sky, the mix of available information changes. Maps may therefore redraw the uncertainty circle or move the dot to a better estimate.
Recommended Free Tools
That behavior is different from a compass error. A compass primarily affects the direction shown by the beam. A stale or gray dot indicates that Maps lacks a current fix, while a large circle indicates uncertainty about position. Match the remedy to the symptom instead of treating every location problem as a calibration problem.
A complete decision path
Use the following order so that the simplest, most likely causes are checked before you escalate:
- Look at the dot: note whether it is gray, surrounded by a large circle, or paired with a wrong-direction beam.
- For jumping: turn off Battery Saver and test Maps again.
- For gray or stale: turn on Location, turn off Airplane mode, enable Wi‑Fi or mobile data, and move outdoors.
- For a large circle: enable Improve Location Accuracy using the Android-version path for your phone.
- For one affected app: review that app’s approximate/precise permission and select precise access when its task needs it.
- For a wrong beam: perform the figure-eight compass calibration.
- After changes: restart the device and test again in an open area.
- If several apps still fail outdoors: contact the device manufacturer’s support service with the model, Android version, symptoms, and the checks already completed.
What not to assume
- Do not treat the dot as exact: the uncertainty circle is an explicit part of Maps’ estimate.
- Do not confuse direction with position: compass calibration changes the beam, not the underlying GPS, Wi‑Fi, or cellular fix.
- Do not change only one control: device-wide Location Accuracy and an app’s precise permission are separate.
- Do not blame hardware immediately: the official troubleshooting steps address settings, permissions, signal conditions, calibration, and restart. They do not establish that a particular antenna, GPS component, accessory, or replacement phone is required.
- Do not expect identical menus: Android version and manufacturer software can change the wording and location of settings.
When to seek manufacturer support
If the location remains wrong across multiple apps after a restart, with Location Accuracy enabled, precise permission granted where needed, Battery Saver disabled, and testing performed outdoors with a clear signal, the reviewed Google guidance does not diagnose a specific hardware failure. Contact the phone or tablet manufacturer’s support channel for model-specific diagnostics rather than replacing a component based only on the map symptom.
When you contact support, provide the model name, Android version, whether the problem affects one app or many, whether the dot is gray or blue, the size of the uncertainty circle, and whether the issue occurs in an open outdoor area. Include which settings you checked and whether compass calibration changed the beam. This separates an app-permission problem from a device-wide location-service problem without guessing at a repair.

Practical examples
The dot jumps while walking downtown
Turn off Battery Saver first. Then confirm Location is on, Airplane mode is off, and Wi‑Fi or mobile data is enabled. Tall buildings can obstruct satellite signals, so test in a more open area. If the circle remains large, enable Improve Location Accuracy and check the app’s precise permission.
Best Value
The gray dot stays at yesterday’s location
A gray or missing dot can represent the last location Maps knew. Turn on Location, disable Airplane mode, enable a network connection, and move outdoors. Wait for a new estimate before judging whether the issue is resolved.
The dot is nearby but the arrow points behind you
This is a direction symptom. Calibrate the compass with a figure eight and check whether the beam narrows. If the dot itself remains in the wrong place, continue with signal, Location Accuracy, and permission checks.
Maps is accurate, but another app is not
Inspect the other app’s location permission. On Android 12 and later, it may have approximate access even though the phone-wide Location Accuracy setting is enabled. Select precise access when that app’s function requires it.
Every app is inaccurate indoors but works outside
The indoor environment may be obscuring GPS. Keep Wi‑Fi or mobile data available and enable Improve Location Accuracy so Android can combine wireless and sensor information. Indoor estimates can still be less certain than outdoor fixes.
Bottom line
For a jumping Android location, disable Battery Saver first. For a gray or stale dot, restore Location, connectivity, and a clearer signal. For a large uncertainty circle, enable Location Accuracy and verify the app’s precise permission. For a wrong-direction beam, calibrate the compass with a figure eight. Restart after the checks, and use manufacturer support only when a device-wide problem persists in open outdoor conditions.
