Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your Android home screen keeps crashing, feels unusually slow, or turns blank, start with the least destructive fixes: restart the phone, install Android and launcher updates, force-stop the launcher, and clear its cache. If the problem remains, use Safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is interfering. Clear launcher data only after accepting that your home-screen layout will reset. A full factory reset is a last resort because it erases the phone.
First, identify what is actually blank
A launcher problem usually means Android is still running but the Home interface is crashing, loading slowly, or failing to draw icons and widgets. You may still hear notifications, unlock the phone, open quick settings, or respond to buttons. A display that is black everywhere, including the lock screen and notification shade, can indicate a broader screen, power, or system problem rather than a launcher failure.

If the phone responds, try a normal restart before changing app data. If it does not respond at all, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for a forced restart for your exact model. Android menu names, launcher names, and Safe mode entry methods differ by manufacturer and software version; Google notes that its general steps can vary by device (Google’s Android app troubleshooting guide).

1. Restart, then install every available update
A restart clears temporary system errors and closes processes that may be consuming memory. It is the safest first action because it does not remove your layout, apps, or personal data.

- After Android starts, test the Home screen for a minute: open and close the app drawer, swipe between pages, and launch one or two apps.
- Open Settings and look for Software update, System update, or a similarly named option. Download and install an available Android update while connected to power and Wi-Fi.
- Open the Play Store, select your profile picture, and choose Manage apps & device to install pending app updates. Some manufacturers also distribute system components or their launcher through a separate store.
Google’s crash guidance recommends restarting, checking for Android updates, and updating the affected app (Android Help). On Samsung phones, One UI Home may be updated through the Play Store or Galaxy Store once the launcher is working again. If the symptoms began immediately after an update, write down the phone model and Android/One UI version; that information helps the manufacturer distinguish a software regression from a hardware or app conflict.
2. Force-stop the launcher and clear its cache
Force-stopping ends the launcher process so Android can start it cleanly. Clearing its cache removes temporary files; it does not normally erase your home-screen arrangement. The exact label can be Home, Launcher, System Launcher, or a manufacturer name.
- Open Settings and choose Apps, Applications, or App management.
- Use the search field or the app list to find the current launcher. On Samsung devices it is called One UI Home.
- Open the app’s information page and tap Force stop, then confirm.
- Return to the Home screen or press the Home button. If it loads, use the phone normally for several minutes.
- If crashes or lag continue, open the same page, choose Storage or Storage & cache, and tap Clear cache. Reopen Home and test again.
Google documents force stop and cache/data controls as standard Android troubleshooting tools, while warning that paths vary by device (Google Android Help). Clearing cache is a lower-risk step than clearing data, but it cannot repair every corrupted setting or incompatible app.
Samsung’s One UI Home path
For a Galaxy phone using One UI Home, Samsung’s documented sequence is Settings → Apps → One UI Home → Storage → Clear cache. Samsung’s support page also discusses a repeated Home Launcher error in the context of a One UI 6.1.1 update. That page is Samsung-specific; it is not evidence that every Android phone or every One UI version has the same defect (Samsung Support).
3. Use Safe mode to test for a downloaded-app conflict
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps while leaving the core Android system available. It is a diagnostic mode, not a permanent repair. If the launcher works normally there, an app you installed or updated is a likely contributor.

- Find the Safe mode procedure for your exact model in the phone maker’s support documentation. The button combination and on-screen steps differ across manufacturers.
- Boot into Safe mode and use the Home screen for several minutes. Open the app drawer, swipe through pages, and try the actions that normally trigger a crash.
- Remember that Safe mode can remove some Home screen widgets temporarily. Google advises taking a screenshot of your layout if you rely on widgets so you can restore them later (Google’s Safe mode instructions).
- If the problem disappears, restart normally. Uninstall or disable recently added or recently updated apps one at a time, restarting and testing between removals.
- If the problem remains in Safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be the cause. Continue with the launcher-data and device-performance checks below, then contact the manufacturer if necessary.
Removing several apps at once makes the result difficult to interpret. Change one variable at a time and note which removal changes the behavior. If an app was responsible, reinstalling it after a factory reset can bring the same fault back.
4. Clear launcher data only after accepting a layout reset
Clearing data is more aggressive than clearing cache. It recreates the launcher’s local settings and can erase the arrangement of icons, folders, widgets, and launcher preferences. Your installed apps and personal files are not the same thing as the launcher’s layout, but you should expect to rebuild the Home screen.

Samsung One UI Home
- Open Settings → Apps → One UI Home → Storage.
- Tap Clear cache first if you have not already done so.
- If the launcher still crashes, choose Clear data and confirm the warning.
- Return to Home and recreate pages, folders, widgets, and preferred wallpaper or grid settings.
Samsung states that clearing One UI Home data resets the home-screen arrangement, settings, and home-screen apps to their defaults (Samsung Support). Other launchers may use different names and may store settings differently, so read the confirmation dialog before accepting. If you cannot remember your layout, photograph each page or use the launcher’s own backup feature before clearing data, if the launcher still opens long enough to provide one.
5. Check whether the whole phone is slow
Launcher lag can be a symptom of wider device pressure rather than a launcher-only defect. Google says Android phones may begin having issues when less than 10% of storage remains free. This is guidance, not a guarantee that every phone below that level will lag, and it is not a launcher-specific threshold (Google Android Help).
- Open Settings → Storage and check the available space. Remove downloads, duplicate videos, or unused apps only after confirming that you no longer need them.
- Close resource-heavy apps that you are not using. Samsung identifies background apps, insufficient memory, outdated software, and temporary system errors as possible causes of Galaxy slowness.
- Restart after freeing space or closing apps, then install pending system and app updates.
- On a Galaxy device with Samsung Members installed, open the app’s diagnostics tools and run the available device checks. The exact tests depend on model and software version (Samsung’s slow or unresponsive Galaxy guide).
If animations, the lock screen, Settings, and multiple apps are all slow, treat the issue as device-wide. A launcher reset alone may not address low storage, memory pressure, an operating-system fault, or failing hardware.

6. When the Home screen is blank but Android still responds
A blank Home screen can mean the launcher process has stopped, its data is corrupted, or the selected Home app is not loading. Use the low-risk sequence rather than repeatedly tapping a blank area:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Pull down the notification shade or open quick settings. If those controls work, the display is active and the problem is more likely limited to the Home interface.
- Restart, then check for system and launcher updates.
- Force-stop the launcher and clear its cache.
- Test in Safe mode to determine whether a downloaded app is involved.
- Only then consider clearing launcher data, after recording your layout.
Do not assume that a single menu path applies to every Android phone. Some devices expose the launcher under Default apps or Home app; others hide it under the full system-app list. If you cannot identify the launcher or the labels do not match, use the manufacturer’s support instructions rather than clearing random system apps.
7. Avoid confusing launcher data clearing with a factory reset
These actions have very different scope:
| Action | What it changes | Risk to your setup | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart | Reloads Android and running processes | Very low; personal data and layout remain | First response to a crash or temporary lag |
| Force stop | Ends the launcher process until Android starts it again | Very low | Launcher is frozen or repeatedly stops |
| Clear cache | Deletes temporary launcher files | Low; layout normally remains | Crashes continue after a restart |
| Clear launcher data | Resets launcher settings, pages, folders, widgets, and default arrangement | High inconvenience; layout must be rebuilt | Launcher data appears corrupted and safer steps failed |
| Factory reset | Erases device data and installed apps and returns Android to setup state | Very high; complete backup and account preparation required | Last resort after support and software isolation |
8. Factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset is not the opening solution for a launcher-only crash. Google states that a factory data reset removes all data from the phone (Google Android Help). That includes locally stored photos, messages, downloads, authenticator data, and app data that is not backed up elsewhere.
Before considering it:
- Back up photos, contacts, messages, documents, and authenticator or banking recovery information.
- Confirm that you know the Google account credentials used on the phone; Android’s theft-protection checks may request them after reset.
- Record the model, Android version, launcher version, and the date the issue began.
- Test Safe mode and remove likely problem apps first. If a downloaded app caused the fault, reinstalling it after the reset can recreate the problem.
- Contact the manufacturer or carrier if the phone is still covered or if the screen, power, or storage appears defective.
Use the reset command under your phone’s Settings → System or equivalent menu only after verifying the backup and the model-specific instructions. If you cannot reach Settings, obtain the manufacturer’s official recovery procedure; button combinations and account-verification behavior vary.

- Confirm scope. If quick settings and notifications work, concentrate on the launcher. If the whole device is black or unresponsive, follow the maker’s broader power and display support steps.
- Restart and update. Test after each change and note whether the failure occurs immediately or only after several minutes.
- Restart the launcher process. Force-stop it, reopen Home, and clear cache if needed.
- Isolate downloaded apps. Safe mode is the most useful test when the problem began after installing or updating an app.
- Reset only launcher data. Do this after recording your layout and understanding the warning.
- Investigate device-wide pressure. Check storage, background apps, updates, and available manufacturer diagnostics.
- Escalate. Give support the model, software versions, timing, symptoms, and test results before considering a factory reset.
Do not perform several destructive actions in succession. If you clear data, reset the phone, and uninstall apps all at once, you lose the clues that identify the cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Most useful next step | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Launcher crashes immediately after boot | Restart, update, force-stop, then clear cache | A temporary process or cache problem may be involved |
| Home screen works in Safe mode but not normally | Remove recent downloaded apps one at a time | An installed app is likely conflicting with Home |
| Home screen is blank but notifications and quick settings work | Identify the launcher, force-stop it, and test cache clearing | The display is active; the failure is probably within the Home interface |
| Every app and animation is slow | Check free storage, background apps, updates, and diagnostics | The issue may be device-wide rather than launcher-specific |
| Launcher remains broken after Safe mode and data clearing | Collect version details and contact the manufacturer | A system defect, incompatible update, or hardware issue needs escalation |
What to tell support if the problem continues
Give the manufacturer or carrier a concise timeline instead of only saying that the phone is broken. Include the exact model, Android and manufacturer-skin version, available storage, whether the problem affects the lock screen or only Home, whether Safe mode changes it, and which steps you tried. Mention any app installed or updated immediately before the first crash. For Samsung, note whether the phone is running the One UI version associated with the documented support case; do not assume that a similar-looking error has the same cause.
Keep the phone connected to power during updates and diagnostics, and avoid repeatedly clearing data while support is collecting logs. A clear record of what changed after each step is more useful than performing every reset at once.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Clearing the wrong app. Remove data only from the identified Home app. Clearing data for Settings, system UI, or another core component can create a different problem.
- Assuming cache and data are interchangeable. Cache is temporary storage; data includes launcher preferences and layout information.
- Blaming storage without checking the number. The 10% guidance applies to overall Android performance, not a guaranteed launcher failure threshold.
- Testing Safe mode incorrectly. A missing widget in Safe mode does not prove that its app is broken. Safe mode itself disables downloaded apps and may hide widgets.
- Reinstalling a suspected app immediately. First test the phone normally for a while. If the same crash returns after reinstalling, report that pattern to support.
- Resetting before backing up. A factory reset cannot be undone, and cloud synchronization may not include every local file or app-specific record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will clearing launcher cache delete my icons and folders?
Normally no. Clearing cache removes temporary files and is lower risk than clearing launcher data. Android labels and behavior vary, so read the confirmation screen before accepting.
What happens if I clear One UI Home data?
Samsung says it resets the home-screen arrangement, settings, and home-screen apps to their defaults. Expect to rebuild pages, folders, widgets, and preferences; this is not the same as erasing the entire phone.
Best Value
Why is my Android home screen blank but notifications still appear?
The display and Android system are likely active while the launcher is failing to draw. Restart, update, identify the Home app, force-stop it, clear its cache, and then test Safe mode.
How do I know whether an installed app is causing the crash?
Boot into Safe mode using your manufacturer’s instructions. Downloaded apps are temporarily disabled. If Home works there, restart normally and remove recent apps one at a time, testing after each removal.
Why did my widgets disappear in Safe mode?
Google notes that Safe mode removes some Home screen widgets. Take a screenshot before testing and restore the widgets after returning to normal mode.
Is less than 10% free storage always the reason for launcher lag?
No. Google says phones may begin having issues below that amount, but it is guidance rather than a guarantee or a launcher-specific limit. Check other causes such as updates, background apps, memory pressure, or hardware.
Should I factory-reset a phone that keeps showing Launcher keeps stopping?
Not first. Restart, update, force-stop and clear cache, test Safe mode, and consider launcher-data clearing with a layout warning. Back up fully and contact the manufacturer before using a factory reset.
What information should I give Samsung or another phone maker?
Provide the exact model, Android and One UI or other skin version, when the issue began, free storage, whether the lock screen and other apps are affected, Safe mode results, and every step that changed the behavior.
The Bottom Line
Restart and update first, then force-stop the launcher and clear its cache. Use Safe mode to identify downloaded-app conflicts, and clear launcher data only when you accept rebuilding the Home screen. If the entire phone is slow, check storage and background activity; Google says problems may begin below 10% free space. Back up before any factory reset, and use the manufacturer’s instructions when menu names or Safe mode steps do not match.
