How to Fix Android Keyboard Issues After Switching From Gboard

If Android suddenly shows a different keyboard, first check whether another installed keyboard is simply selected. Open any text field, bring up the keyboard, touch and hold the Globe key, and choose Gboard. If Gboard is not offered, enable it in Android’s on-screen keyboard settings. For crashes, freezing, or an unresponsive keyboard, restart and update Gboard before clearing its cache, resetting its data, or reinstalling it.

Settings names and paths vary by phone manufacturer, Android release, and language. The instructions below use Google’s current labels; when a label is missing, search the Settings app for On-screen keyboard, virtual keyboard, or Gboard.

Identify what actually changed

“My Android keyboard changed” can describe two different situations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Another keyboard is selected. Gboard is still installed and enabled, but Android is using a different available keyboard. Switching with the Globe key normally fixes this without changing app data.
  • Gboard is unavailable or malfunctioning. It may be disabled, missing from the keyboard switcher, crashing, freezing, or failing to appear when you tap a text field. Those symptoms require settings or app maintenance.

Start with the least disruptive check. Do not clear data or uninstall anything until you know that simply selecting Gboard does not solve the problem.

How do I switch back to Gboard?

This is the quickest solution when another keyboard was selected but Gboard remains installed.

  1. Open an app that has a text field, such as a messaging or notes app.
  2. Tap the field so the keyboard appears.
  3. Touch and hold the Globe key. On some layouts, the key may be beside the space bar or may appear only when more than one keyboard is enabled.
  4. Choose Gboard from the keyboard list.

Android should immediately replace the current keyboard with Gboard. This does not delete the other keyboard, change your phone’s system language, or reset Gboard’s preferences. If Gboard is not listed, continue to the enabling steps instead of repeatedly opening the switcher.

Why is Gboard not showing up?

When Gboard is absent from the keyboard switcher, Google’s documented remedy is to turn it on in the on-screen keyboard settings. The exact route can differ by manufacturer and Android version, so use the closest matching path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open System.
  3. Tap Keyboard.
  4. Choose On-screen keyboard. Some phones call this Virtual keyboard or place it directly under a language or input heading.
  5. Find Gboard and turn its switch on.
  6. Return to a text field, open the Globe-key switcher, and select Gboard.

If you cannot find the menu, use the Settings search box for On-screen keyboard, virtual keyboard, or Gboard. Search is useful because manufacturers reorganize the same Android control under different headings. Google’s troubleshooting instructions describe enabling Gboard from the on-screen keyboard list: Fix problems with Gboard.

If Gboard is not present even in the on-screen keyboard list, check whether the app is installed on the phone before attempting a reinstall. Do not remove your only working keyboard first; the safety step for that situation is covered below.

Fix Gboard crashes, freezing, or no response

Use these actions in order. Each step is more disruptive than the one before it, so stop when typing works normally.

1. Restart the device

Restart Android, unlock the phone, and test Gboard in a text field. A restart is Google’s first-line action for a keyboard that crashes, freezes, or does not respond. It gives the app a clean launch without changing Gboard’s saved preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Update Gboard in Google Play

  1. Open Google Play.
  2. Search for Gboard.
  3. If an Update button is shown, tap it and wait for the installation to finish.
  4. Open a text field and test the keyboard again.

Google lists restarting and updating as initial troubleshooting actions. Current app and Play labels can change, but the operation remains an update of the Gboard app rather than an Android system update.

3. Clear Gboard’s cache

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications on some releases).
  3. Select Gboard. If it is not visible, use the app-list search.
  4. Open Storage and cache.
  5. Tap Clear cache.
  6. Return to a text field and test typing.

Clearing cache removes temporary files used by Gboard. It is different from clearing data or storage and is the safer reset to try first. It does not erase unrelated photos, messages, or other Android app data.

4. Clear data or storage only when necessary

If Gboard still crashes or freezes after its cache is cleared, return to Settings > Apps > Gboard > Storage and cache and choose Clear data or Clear storage, depending on the wording on your phone.

Google says this resets Gboard to its default state. Expect to configure Gboard’s preferences again, including any settings or language choices you had changed inside the keyboard. This action concerns Gboard’s app state; it is not a factory reset and does not wipe your general Android storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Force stop and reopen Gboard

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Gboard.
  2. Tap Force stop and confirm if Android asks.
  3. Open an app with a text field and invoke the keyboard again.

Force stopping closes the currently stuck Gboard process. It does not substitute for enabling Gboard if the app is disabled, and it does not reset your settings by itself.

6. Consider uninstalling updates when the timing points to an update

If the failure began immediately after Gboard updated, the Gboard app-info screen may offer Uninstall updates from its menu. Google’s troubleshooting guidance includes this as an option for update-related problems. The exact control is not available on every phone or installation. If you use it, test the keyboard on the restored version and later install a current update when one is offered and compatible with your device.

Reinstall Gboard without losing access to typing

Reinstallation is a later step, not the first response to a keyboard selection problem. Before uninstalling Gboard, make sure another keyboard is installed and enabled. Google’s warning is explicit:

“Important: if Gboard is your only keyboard app, install a secondary one.”

This matters because removing the only enabled keyboard can leave you without a practical way to enter text for searches, passwords, or setup screens. Install and enable a secondary keyboard first, then verify that the Globe-key switcher can open it.

  1. Open Google Play and install a secondary keyboard if Gboard is your only keyboard app.
  2. Open Android’s Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard (or the equivalent menu) and enable that secondary keyboard.
  3. In Google Play, open Gboard’s app page and uninstall it, if Android presents an uninstall option.
  4. Restart the phone if the system requests it.
  5. Install Gboard again from Google Play.
  6. Return to the on-screen keyboard settings and enable Gboard.
  7. Use the Globe-key switcher in a text field to select Gboard.

Reinstalling can return Gboard to a clean installed state, so plan to review its language and layout settings afterward. If your phone treats Gboard as a preinstalled system app, Play may show an option to uninstall updates rather than remove the app itself; use the option Android actually provides.

Fix the wrong language, layout, or keys

A keyboard that looks “wrong” may be using an unexpected Gboard language or layout rather than being broken. Gboard’s language setting is separate from the language used by Android’s menus and system interface.

Add or select the intended language and layout

  1. Open Gboard’s settings. One route is Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Languages; the labels can vary.
  2. Tap Add keyboard or the equivalent add-language control.
  3. Choose the language you need.
  4. Select the available layout, then confirm with Done.
  5. Return to a text field and test the new layout.

Google’s setup instructions explain that adding a language to Gboard does not change the device’s Android language: Set up Gboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switch languages while typing

With multiple languages enabled, tap or hold the space bar to switch, or use the language-switch key when it is shown. Google’s keyboard-use guide documents these controls: Use your keyboard.

If you keep switching languages accidentally or the keyboard feels unpredictable, remove languages you do not use from Gboard’s Languages list. Google’s troubleshooting guidance suggests keeping one or two active languages for smoother typing. Keep additional languages only when you regularly need them.

A low-risk troubleshooting order

When you are unsure which symptom applies, follow this sequence and test after every action:

  1. Open a text field and hold the Globe key. Select Gboard if it is available.
  2. If Gboard is absent, enable it under the phone’s on-screen keyboard settings.
  3. Restart the phone.
  4. Update Gboard in Google Play.
  5. Clear Gboard’s cache from its app-storage screen.
  6. Force stop Gboard and reopen a text field.
  7. If the fault remains, clear Gboard’s data or storage, understanding that its settings return to defaults.
  8. If the fault started right after an update, consider Uninstall updates when Android offers that control.
  9. Before uninstalling, install and enable a secondary keyboard; then reinstall Gboard from Google Play.
  10. If keys or languages are wrong rather than the app being unresponsive, review Gboard’s language and layout choices.

This order keeps selection and settings checks ahead of resets and reinstallation. It also preserves a usable keyboard during the most disruptive step.

What each reset does—and does not do

Action Gboard effect Other Android data When to use it
Choose Gboard with the Globe key Changes which enabled keyboard receives input Unaffected A different keyboard is merely active
Enable Gboard in on-screen keyboard settings Makes Gboard available to select Unaffected Gboard is missing from the switcher
Restart Reloads the app and system processes Unaffected First response to a crash or freeze
Update from Google Play Installs the offered Gboard version Unaffected The app is outdated or an update is available
Clear cache Deletes temporary cached files Unaffected After restart and update do not help
Clear data or storage Resets Gboard preferences and saved app state to defaults Does not factory-reset the phone Persistent crashes or freezes after clearing cache
Force stop Ends the current Gboard process Unaffected Gboard remains stuck after other low-impact steps
Uninstall and reinstall Removes and installs Gboard again; settings may need to be configured Other apps and files remain Earlier maintenance steps fail, with a secondary keyboard available

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Clearing data when the wrong keyboard is simply selected: selection is fixed with the Globe-key switcher; a data reset is unnecessary.
  • Assuming every Settings path is identical: Android manufacturers and releases use different labels. Search Settings when the documented path is not visible.
  • Uninstalling Gboard before enabling another keyboard: follow Google’s warning and keep a secondary option active first.
  • Confusing Gboard language with Android language: changing a Gboard layout does not translate or change the phone’s system menus.
  • Removing every language to solve a one-language problem: first identify the active layout; reduce the list only when extra languages are causing unwanted switching or confusion.
  • Repeating a failed step without testing: after each change, open a text field and verify whether the specific symptom—wrong selection, missing app, crash, or layout problem—has changed.

When the symptom changes after a fix

A successful step can reveal a second issue. For example, enabling Gboard may make it appear in the switcher but leave an old language selected; clearing Gboard’s data may stop a crash but return the keyboard to its default layout; reinstalling may restore the app while leaving the secondary keyboard selected. Recheck the active keyboard and Gboard’s Languages settings after a reset, then select Gboard explicitly with the Globe key.

If Android still cannot keep any keyboard active after Gboard is enabled, test the secondary keyboard you installed before reinstalling. That separates a Gboard-specific failure from a broader input-setting problem on the phone. The documented Gboard steps above address the app, its enablement, and its saved state; they do not claim that every manufacturer-specific input problem has the same cause.
