Android may stop an APK for several different reasons, and the fix depends on the exact warning. If you see “Allow from this source”, grant the permission to the browser or file manager that supplied the APK, not to Android globally. If you see a Play Protect warning, an unverified-developer message, an Advanced Protection block, a device-certification error, or an organization-policy notice, changing that permission will not solve the problem.
Read the wording on the screen first, identify which app supplied the file, and continue only when you trust both the APK’s source and its publisher. Google warns that apps installed outside Google Play can damage a device, cause data loss, or expose personal information.

Identify the warning before changing a setting
Android uses similar language for unrelated safeguards. The message determines who controls the block and what a safe remedy looks like.

These categories can appear together. For example, granting a browser permission does not override a Play Protect block, an unverified-developer delay, Advanced Protection, device certification, or an administrator rule.

Fix the ordinary “Allow from this source” block
Check the source before enabling anything
Android grants this permission to the application that supplied the package. That might be a browser, an email attachment handler, a cloud-storage client, or a file manager. It is not a single switch that makes every unknown source trusted.
- Look at the app name shown in the installer or permission screen.
- Confirm that you intentionally obtained the APK from the publisher’s trusted official channel.
- Do not continue merely because the file has a familiar name. The permission allows that source app to begin installations; it does not certify the APK.
Enable the source permission from the installer
- Start the APK installation until Android displays “For your security, your phone currently isn’t allowed to install unknown apps from this source” or the equivalent “Allow from this source” prompt.
- Tap Settings on that prompt.
- Find the app identified as the source, such as your browser or file manager.
- Turn on Allow from this source.
- Return to the installer, usually with the back gesture or by selecting the pending installation notification.
- Proceed only if you still trust the source and the app. Android may show an additional security warning or a Play Protect decision after this permission is granted.
On a Pixel, the same control can be reached manually through Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. Select the source app and enable Allow from this source. Google notes that custom Android versions can use different menu names or locations, so a manufacturer’s Settings search for “install unknown apps” may be faster than following the Pixel path exactly.
Turn the permission back off
After the installation, revoke access if the source no longer needs it. Open Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, select the browser or file manager, and switch off Allow from this source. This leaves the installed app in place while preventing that source from starting another unknown-source installation until you deliberately enable it again.
If enabling it does not solve the problem
- Recheck which application supplied the APK. Allowing a file manager does not authorize a browser, and allowing one browser does not authorize another.
- Return to the original installer notification. A second warning may be from Play Protect or developer verification rather than the source permission.
- Use the device’s Settings search for Install unknown apps if the manufacturer moved the control.
- On a managed phone, the organization may have disabled the control entirely.
- If the APK is rejected after the permission is enabled, stop changing security settings and identify the new warning before proceeding.
When Play Protect blocks or warns about the APK
Play Protect is Google’s app-safety scanning system. It can warn about an app, disable it, remove it, or block an installation that it regards as harmful or risky. That scan is separate from the source permission: turning on Allow from this source does not make a Play Protect warning disappear.

What to do at the warning
- Read the app name and the reason shown by Play Protect.
- Cancel the installation if you cannot establish where the APK came from or who publishes it.
- Verify the package and publisher through a trusted official channel operated by the developer. Avoid relying on a reposted download page or an unfamiliar mirror.
- Install only if you understand the warning and have independently established that the file is the intended release.
Google recommends leaving Play Protect enabled. Disabling the scanner to force an install removes a safety layer and does not address developer verification, Advanced Protection, certification, or organization policy. If a developer believes Play Protect incorrectly flagged its app, the developer—not the end user—should use Google’s official appeal process.
When Android says the developer is not verified
An unverified-developer block is a separate identity check. It is not the normal per-source permission and it is not a statement that the app’s content has been declared safe or unsafe. Google’s documented advanced flow includes a one-time settings procedure followed by a 24-hour security delay. After that delay, the user can choose to keep the advanced flow enabled for seven days or indefinitely. The installation still displays a warning.
Use the advanced flow only when you have verified the publisher
- Record the exact developer and app names in the warning.
- Confirm the publisher through its trusted official channel and make sure the APK is the one it intended you to install.
- Follow the on-screen advanced settings instructions. The security delay is intentional; it cannot be replaced by the ordinary Allow from this source switch.
- When the delay expires, choose the limited seven-day option or the indefinite option only if you understand the continuing security trade-off.
- Reconsider the installation if the publisher cannot explain its identity or distribution method.
Ask the publisher to verify
Google recommends verified developers. If you are blocked because the developer identity is unverified, contact the app publisher and request that it complete verification. This is often the cleanest remedy for a legitimate app because it addresses the publisher’s identity rather than asking every user to weaken a device safeguard.

Google’s Android Help describes an initial developer-verification phase beginning in September 2026 for certified Android 8 and newer devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, with participating app stores. Google’s Android Developer Console Help specifies September 30, 2026 for Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Because the two official pages phrase the timing and geography differently, check the current country-specific guidance instead of treating either wording as a universal launch date.

Availability can therefore differ by country, device certification, Android release, and app store. A warning that appears after the rollout may require the publisher’s verification even when the same APK installed elsewhere without that message.
Advanced Protection can block outside-Play installations
Google Advanced Protection is a broader security policy. It blocks new installations from most sources outside Google Play. This is different from Play Protect’s malware scanning and from the per-source permission. If Advanced Protection is active, enabling Allow from this source may have no effect because the higher-level policy still forbids the install.
Review whether Advanced Protection is intentionally enabled on the account or device. If the phone belongs to someone who chose that protection level, the safest route is to obtain the app through an approved store or ask the account owner before changing the policy. Do not describe an Advanced Protection block as an “unknown source permission” problem.

Device certification problems are a separate failure
Device certification is not the same as the Play Protect scanner. A phone can have Play Protect installed while still failing Google’s device-certification requirements. Turning the scanner off will not change an uncertified-device status.

Certification problems are especially relevant on modified, imported, or custom Android builds. Check the exact certification message and consult the device manufacturer or the relevant Google support documentation for that model and software build. The remedy depends on the device’s certification state; the ordinary source toggle cannot repair it.

Work, school, and shared devices can enforce an organization policy that prevents side-loading, blocks particular sources, or hides the installation control. A message such as “Blocked by your administrator” means the administrator, not the local user, owns the decision.
- Do not try to bypass a work or school policy by installing another file manager or changing security settings.
- Give the administrator the app name, publisher, requested version, and business reason for the installation.
- Ask whether an approved managed store or internal distribution channel exists.
- Use a personal, unmanaged device only when the organization’s rules permit that alternative.
Why Android uses a per-source permission
Older descriptions often call this a single “unknown sources” switch, but current Android controls are more granular. Each source app has its own permission under Special app access. This limits which applications can launch package installation and lets you revoke one source without changing the behavior of every other app.

Granting access to the wrong app leaves the original source blocked, while granting access to several apps creates more opportunities for unwanted installations.
A safe decision checklist before you continue
- Identify the exact prompt. “Allow from this source,” Play Protect, developer verification, Advanced Protection, certification, and administrator messages have different owners.
- Identify the source app. The permission belongs to the browser, file manager, or other app that supplied the package.
- Verify the publisher. Use a trusted official channel and confirm that the APK is intended for your device and release.
- Keep Play Protect on. A warning can indicate a harmful or risky app, and Play Protect may disable, remove, or block it.
- Consider the consequences. Google warns that outside-Play downloads can lead to device damage, data loss, or compromise of personal information.
- Respect higher-level controls. Advanced Protection, certification status, and organization policy cannot be solved by repeatedly toggling the source permission.
- Revoke temporary access. Turn off Allow from this source for the source app after the intended installation.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Settings button opens, but no source app appears
Open Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps and inspect the applications listed there. If the app that opened the APK is absent, the manufacturer may use a different menu or the device administrator may prohibit the capability. Search Settings for the exact phrase Install unknown apps, then consult the device maker if the control is still unavailable.
The toggle is on, but the same warning returns
Check whether the APK was opened by a different app than the one you authorized. If the installer now shows Play Protect, developer verification, Advanced Protection, certification, or administrator language, follow that branch instead of changing the source toggle again.
The installation waits for a day
A 24-hour wait is characteristic of the unverified-developer advanced flow. It is a security delay, not a download failure. Confirm the publisher during the waiting period and contact it for verification if possible.

The app installs, then is disabled or removed
That behavior is consistent with a later Play Protect action. Treat it as a safety signal, stop using the app, and verify the publisher and package through trusted official channels. Re-enabling the source permission will not address a Play Protect decision.
The phone is owned by an employer or school
Assume an administrator policy is involved when the message names an administrator or the installation controls are missing. Request approval or an approved distribution method rather than attempting to circumvent management.
The phone uses a custom Android build
Pixel instructions are a supported example, not a universal path. Custom Android versions and manufacturer interfaces can rename, relocate, or remove menu items. Use the device maker’s documentation for the exact software build, and distinguish a custom interface difference from a certification or policy block.
When to stop and seek help
Stop the installation and seek help from the publisher, device manufacturer, Google, or your organization administrator when the warning identifies an unverified developer, an uncertified device, an Advanced Protection policy, or a managed-device restriction. A per-source permission is appropriate only when you can identify the supplying app and independently trust the APK. If the source or publisher cannot be established, leaving the installation blocked is the safer outcome.
