Start by identifying what failed. Android Auto not launching, a wired connection dropping, wireless pairing failing, and calls or music failing after Android Auto opens are different problems with different fixes. Check compatibility first, then work through the connection type and the specific feature.
Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones, so most users do not need to install a separate Android Auto app. The car or aftermarket receiver must also support Android Auto, and the exact support list comes from the vehicle or receiver manufacturer.

Also note when the failure began. An issue that appeared immediately after a phone, Android Auto, Google Play services, or head-unit update is useful information to record for support.

Confirm the requirements for your connection
Wired Android Auto requirements
- An Android phone running Android 9.0 (Pie) or later.
- An active mobile data plan.
- A compatible car or aftermarket receiver.
- A high-quality USB data cable. Google recommends a cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet).
- A car USB port that is designated for Android Auto; many vehicles have USB ports that provide charging but do not support projection.
Android Auto is not available on Android (Go edition) devices. Compatibility is model-specific, so confirm the phone and vehicle combination with their manufacturers rather than assuming that any Android phone or USB-equipped car will work.
Wireless Android Auto requirements
- A phone and vehicle or receiver that both support wireless Android Auto.
- An active data plan.
- A phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi support.
- Wireless projection compatibility; Google states that wireless projection is compatible with Android 11.0 phones.
- Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during initial setup.
Wireless capability is not implied by the presence of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or a USB port. Check the vehicle maker’s compatibility information and the receiver maker’s specifications for the exact model and market.
Prepare the car before testing
Put the car in Park and turn on the infotainment system. Keep the phone unlocked during the first setup if the phone requests permission. Android Auto must be enabled in the car’s infotainment settings; the label and menu location vary by vehicle. If the car has more than one USB socket, use the one identified in the manual for smartphone projection.
Fix a wired connection that stopped working
For a formerly working wired connection, the USB cable is a credible first diagnostic. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says that replacing the USB cable will likely fix some failures, but this recommendation applies to wired Android Auto only; it does not establish a fix for wireless pairing or a single failed feature.
1. Test with a known-good short data cable
- Choose a high-quality USB cable under 1 metre (3 feet). The cable supplied with the phone is a reasonable first test. An independent cable can also be suitable when it supports data and meets USB-IF standards.
- Match the connector at the phone to the connector at the car. A cable that charges the phone is not necessarily capable of reliable data transfer.
- Connect the phone directly to the designated Android Auto USB port. Do not use a USB hub, extension, or intermediary adapter while diagnosing the fault.
- Start the car’s infotainment system, unlock the phone if prompted, and accept the Android Auto permissions.
If Android Auto works with the test cable, replace the original cable. If the same symptom remains, continue with the port and vehicle checks rather than repeatedly buying cables.

2. Check both USB ports
- Inspect the phone and vehicle USB sockets for obvious debris, looseness, or physical damage. Do not force the connector.
- Try the vehicle’s documented Android Auto port if you had been using a charging-only socket.
- Make sure the connector is fully seated at both ends and that movement does not immediately interrupt the connection.
A cable test cannot correct a damaged phone port, a damaged vehicle port, or a head unit that has disabled projection.
3. Verify Android Auto in the infotainment settings
- Open the vehicle’s settings or connectivity menu.
- Look for Android Auto, smartphone projection, or a similar phone-integration setting.
- Make sure the feature is enabled and that the connected phone is allowed.
- Restart the infotainment system, then reconnect the phone.
Menu names differ by vehicle and software version. Use the car manual when the setting is not obvious.

If you use an aftermarket receiver, check its manufacturer’s firmware-support page for the exact model. Install only firmware intended for that receiver and follow its instructions. A receiver update may be necessary when a previously supported phone stops projecting after a software change, but the receiver maker must confirm compatibility and the correct procedure.
Fix wireless Android Auto pairing and reconnection
Wireless Android Auto uses Bluetooth for the initial pairing and Wi-Fi for the projection connection. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on while completing setup, as Google recommends.
1. Confirm wireless support
Check the phone model, Android version, vehicle or receiver model, and market-specific compatibility list. A phone that works with wired Android Auto is not automatically a wireless-compatible phone, and a car that supports Bluetooth calls is not automatically a wireless Android Auto vehicle.

2. Rebuild a stale pairing
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on in the phone’s quick settings or Settings app.
- Restart the phone and restart the car’s infotainment system.
- In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, forget the car’s old pairing.
- In the car’s Bluetooth or phone-management menu, remove the stored phone according to the vehicle manual.
- With Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled, start pairing again from the car’s phone or Android Auto menu.
- Accept the prompts on both screens and leave the phone connected while the car completes setup.
Android and vehicle menu names vary, so do not treat a different label as evidence that the function is missing. Look for options such as Forget, Remove device, Delete phone, or Clear paired phones.

- Keep the phone close enough for the initial Bluetooth exchange.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is on even if the phone is not connected to a home network.
- Make sure Location Services is on during setup.
- Confirm that the phone has an active data plan and supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
If pairing succeeds but Android Auto does not launch, revisit the car’s Android Auto or smartphone-projection setting and restart the infotainment system. If the vehicle does not appear in the compatibility list, contact the vehicle maker rather than trying an unofficial adapter as a guaranteed repair; Google’s guidance does not establish a wireless adapter as a fix for a stopped feature.
When only calls or music fail
A partial failure usually means the Bluetooth profile or the vehicle’s audio support needs attention, not that the entire Android Auto connection is broken.
Music does not play
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the paired vehicle.
- Make sure Media audio is enabled for that vehicle.
- Raise the volume on both the phone and the car, and select the correct infotainment audio source.
- Test a different supported audio app if only one app is silent.
Not every vehicle supports Bluetooth music playback. Check the vehicle manual for supported profiles and source-selection steps.
Calls do not work
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings for the vehicle.
- Make sure Phone audio is enabled.
- Check the call volume on the phone and the vehicle while a call is active.
- Verify that the vehicle’s hands-free calling function is enabled and that the correct phone is selected for calls.
Some vehicles support Bluetooth music but not Bluetooth calling, or the reverse. The vehicle manual is the authority for the car’s supported functions. These checks address Bluetooth call and music profiles; they do not replace the separate troubleshooting paths for voice commands, navigation audio, or app discovery.

Reset the car association when adding or changing vehicles
If Android Auto works in one car but fails in a second car, remove old vehicle associations and set up the affected car again. Google’s Android Auto guide recommends forgetting previously connected cars for this situation.
- Open the Android Auto settings on the phone. Depending on the Android version, Android Auto may be presented as an integrated system setting rather than a standalone app icon.
- Use the option to forget previously connected cars.
- Remove the phone from the vehicle’s stored-phone list using the car manual’s procedure.
- Restart the phone and infotainment system.
- Reconnect using the correct wired or wireless setup and accept the requested permissions.
The exact phone path can change between Android versions, so use the Settings search field for “Android Auto” or “connected cars” if the menu is not visible. Forgetting cars removes stored associations; it does not change the vehicle’s hardware compatibility.
Use updates and a bug report for a reproducible fault
Update the software Google identifies
- Install available Android system updates for the phone.
- Update Android Auto if an update is offered through the phone’s software-update or app-management interface.
- Update Google Play services when an update is available.
- Restart the phone.
- Recreate the failure using the same car, connection type, and steps that normally trigger it.
Record the phone model, Android version, Android Auto version if shown, Google Play services version if shown, vehicle or head-unit model, connection type, the exact symptom, and the date the problem began. This information distinguishes a compatibility issue from a repeatable software fault.
Capture the report without disconnecting
When the fault remains reproducible, follow Google’s Android Auto bug-report procedure. Keep the phone connected to the car while the report is being captured; disconnecting before capture finishes can remove relevant connection information. Submit the report with the diagnostic details above and describe the shortest sequence that reproduces the failure.

When to contact the manufacturer
Contact the vehicle manufacturer when the car is missing from its compatibility information, Android Auto is disabled or unavailable in the infotainment menus, the designated USB port does not detect any compatible phone, or the vehicle’s Bluetooth profiles behave differently from the manual. Contact an aftermarket receiver manufacturer for model-specific firmware and compatibility guidance.

Contact the phone manufacturer when the phone fails with multiple known-compatible cars and cables, the USB connector is physically unreliable, or Android system functions outside the car are also failing. Give support the complete symptom record instead of reporting only that “Android Auto is broken.”
Choosing a replacement wired cable
If your diagnosis points to the cable, compare the options on the factors Google’s guidance makes relevant:
