Most “Android Auto emulator” failures come from using the wrong tool or mixing two connection methods. Google’s Desktop Head Unit (DHU) emulates the car display on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer but uses a real Android phone. An Android Virtual Device (AVD) emulates the phone itself, while a real car has its own cable and infotainment troubleshooting path. Identify which setup you have, then follow only that path.
First identify what you are trying to run
Android Auto development documentation uses “emulator” for the Desktop Head Unit. Android Developers describes it this way: “The Desktop Head Unit (DHU) lets your development machine emulate an Android Auto head unit so that you can run and test Android Auto apps.” The DHU is a computer program that renders the vehicle-style interface; it does not create a virtual Android phone. Your phone supplies the Android Auto app and connects to the computer over USB. See the official definition and supported workflow in Android Developers’ Desktop Head Unit guide.

| What you have | What it emulates | Typical failure | Use this article section |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop Head Unit (DHU) | A car head unit on your development computer | Package will not install, host binary will not start, or the computer cannot discover the phone | DHU installation, phone preparation, Accessory Mode, and ADB tunneling |
| Android Virtual Device (AVD) | An Android phone or tablet inside Android Studio | Virtual device will not boot, graphics are corrupted, or networking fails | AVD troubleshooting section and the Android Emulator documentation |
| Real vehicle display | Nothing is emulated; Android Auto runs in the car | USB connection drops, the car is incompatible, or the infotainment system does not detect the phone | Real-car cable and vehicle checks |
If you are seeing an Android Studio device window, do not install the DHU and do not use its USB commands. If you are looking at a physical dashboard, do not expect DHU package changes to repair the car.
DHU requirements to check before troubleshooting
- A development computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- An Android phone running Android 9 (API level 28) or later.
- Developer mode enabled on the phone.
- Your Android Auto test app installed on the phone.
- Android Auto installed and current on the phone.
- A USB connection between the phone and the development computer.
On phones running Android 10 (API level 29) or later, sign in to Google Play and update Android Auto before the first DHU run. During the first connection, watch the phone’s screen for terms, permissions, or trust prompts; the DHU cannot complete setup until those prompts are accepted.

Install the official Desktop Head Unit package
Install from Android Studio
- Open Android Studio’s SDK Manager.
- Select the SDK Tools tab.
- Select the Android Auto Desktop Head Unit Emulator package.
- Apply the change and wait for the package installation to finish.
The package is placed under SDK_LOCATION/extras/google/auto/. Replace SDK_LOCATION with the SDK directory used by your Android Studio installation. If you cannot find the executable, check that directory rather than searching your project folder or an AVD directory.
Make the executable usable on macOS or Linux
Open a terminal in SDK_LOCATION/extras/google/auto/. If the binary is present but the shell reports that it cannot be executed, grant execute permission:
chmod +x ./desktop-head-unit
Keep the bundled libusb library beside the desktop-head-unit executable. Moving the binary alone to another directory can prevent it from loading its USB support.

Check Linux runtime compatibility
DHU 2.x requires GLIBC 2.32 or later, plus the libc++1 and libc++abi1 runtime libraries. Check the GLIBC version supplied by the host:

If the reported GLIBC is older than 2.32, or either C++ runtime is absent, the DHU is facing a host compatibility problem. Install the matching libraries using your distribution’s package manager or move the test to a supported host; changing Android Auto on the phone will not repair a missing host library. Package names and installation commands differ by Linux distribution, so use that distribution’s current documentation.
Prepare the phone for its first DHU connection
- Confirm that the phone is running Android 9/API 28 or newer.
- Enable Android developer mode and the debugging options required by your development workflow.
- Install the Android Auto app and your test app on the phone.
- If the phone runs Android 10/API 29 or newer, sign in to Google Play and update Android Auto before connecting to DHU for the first time.
- Unlock the phone when you connect it and respond to every Android Auto terms, permission, or trust dialog.
A phone that is locked, waiting for a permission response, or running an outdated Android Auto build can look like a USB-discovery failure even when the cable and DHU installation are correct.
Connect with Accessory Mode (the normal DHU 2.x route)
Accessory Mode uses Android Open Accessory over USB. It is the recommended connection method for DHU 2.x because the DHU scans for a compatible phone directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsmacOS or Linux
- Connect the prepared, unlocked phone to the development computer over USB.
- Open a terminal in
SDK_LOCATION/extras/google/auto/. - Start the DHU with:
./desktop-head-unit --usb

./desktop-head-unit --usb=[DEVICE_ID]
Use the device identifier reported by the DHU’s discovery process; do not replace it with a random serial number.
Windows
- Connect and unlock the phone.
- Open the installed DHU directory.
- Launch
desktop-head-unit.exewith its USB option, for example:
desktop-head-unit.exe --usb
If discovery does not start on Windows, continue to the WinUSB and ADB checks below before changing Android Auto settings.
Use ADB tunneling when Accessory Mode is unavailable
ADB tunneling is an alternative transport. It is particularly useful when Accessory Mode cannot discover the phone or when a Windows USB driver change interferes with ADB. This method has more prerequisites, so check them in order.

- Open Android Auto’s settings on the phone and enable its developer mode.
- From the Android Auto developer menu, choose Start head unit server.
- Verify that Android Auto shows the head unit server’s foreground-service notification. If the notification is not present, the server is not running for the tunnel.
- In Android Auto settings, open Previously connected cars.
- Ensure Add new cars to Android Auto is enabled.
- Connect the phone by USB and leave its screen unlocked.
Forward the DHU port from the computer
On the development computer, run:
adb forward tcp:5277 tcp:5277
Launch the DHU from SDK_LOCATION/extras/google/auto/ using its ADB mode. If you changed the default port, supply the documented DHU --adb host and port options for that port rather than forwarding 5277. The forwarding command alone is not sufficient: the phone-side server, USB connection, unlocked screen, and Android Auto settings must all be ready.

When the computer cannot find the phone
Windows Accessory Mode and WinUSB
Google notes that Windows Accessory Mode may require the phone’s WinUSB driver. Installing WinUSB can interfere with the ADB connection used by other workflows. If the DHU does not discover the phone after the driver change, stop the ADB server and retry:
adb kill-server
Start the DHU again after the command completes. If the conflict remains, switch to ADB tunneling and satisfy every phone-side prerequisite in the preceding section instead of repeatedly reinstalling drivers.
Check ADB tunneling one prerequisite at a time
- The Android Auto head unit server is running and its foreground-service notification is visible.
- Add new cars to Android Auto is enabled under Previously connected cars.
- The USB cable is connected to the development computer, not through an unverified intermediate device.
- The phone screen is unlocked.
adb forward tcp:5277 tcp:5277completed without an error, or the forwarding command uses the non-default port you configured.- Any first-run terms and permissions have been accepted on the phone.
Fix the first failed prerequisite you observe. For example, a successful port-forward command cannot compensate for a stopped head unit server, and a running server cannot compensate for a locked phone.
Diagnose DHU startup and host errors
| Observed symptom | Most likely class of problem | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The DHU package is missing from the computer | SDK package was not installed or the wrong SDK directory is being used | Install Android Auto Desktop Head Unit Emulator from Android Studio’s SDK Tools tab and open SDK_LOCATION/extras/google/auto/. |
| “Permission denied” on macOS or Linux | The binary lacks execute permission | Run chmod +x ./desktop-head-unit in the DHU directory and keep the bundled libusb beside it. |
| Linux reports a missing shared library | libc++1, libc++abi1, or another host dependency is unavailable |
Install the required runtime from the Linux distribution’s package repository. |
| Linux refuses to run the DHU despite installed libraries | GLIBC is older than the DHU 2.x requirement | Confirm with ldd --version; the host needs GLIBC 2.32 or later. |
| DHU starts but no phone appears in Accessory Mode | USB discovery, driver, phone state, or first-run authorization problem | Unlock the phone, accept prompts, review the Windows WinUSB/ADB interaction, then try ADB tunneling. |
| ADB forwarding succeeds but the DHU still cannot connect | Phone-side server or Android Auto setting is incomplete | Start the head unit server, verify its notification, enable Add new cars to Android Auto, reconnect USB, and rerun the forwarding command. |
These symptoms describe separate layers. A host GLIBC failure occurs before phone communication; changing the phone’s Android Auto settings will not address it. Conversely, a clean DHU launch with no discovered device points to transport or phone preparation rather than SDK installation.

If you actually mean an Android Virtual Device
An AVD is a virtual Android device inside Android Studio, not the DHU. Do not apply DHU commands such as --usb, WinUSB installation, or Android Auto head unit server forwarding to an AVD boot, rendering, or network problem.
Use the official Android Emulator troubleshooting guide for the failure you observe. Its documented issue categories include missing libnss3 on ChromeOS, GPU and Vulkan problems, slow emulator operation, and network or DNS failures. Choose the workaround that matches the symptom; these are emulator-specific issues and are not universal fixes for DHU USB discovery.
Separate real-car connection problems from DHU problems
If the Android Auto interface is failing on an actual dashboard, troubleshoot the vehicle connection instead of the DHU. Google’s Android Auto support guidance is at Google Android Auto Help.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use a suitable wired connection
- Use a high-quality USB data cable shorter than one metre.
- Do not connect through a USB hub or extension.
- If Android Auto worked previously and has stopped, replace the cable with another compatible data cable.
Check the phone’s connector type and confirm that the replacement cable supports data, not only charging. This cable advice applies to the phone-to-car connection; it cannot repair a missing DHU package, an old Linux GLIBC, an ADB forwarding error, or a Windows driver conflict.
Check vehicle compatibility and infotainment settings
- Verify that the car or aftermarket receiver supports Android Auto.
- Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system.
- Restart the infotainment system, then reconnect the unlocked phone.
- For an aftermarket receiver, check the manufacturer’s site for firmware updates.
- When setting up a second car, use Android Auto’s option to forget previously connected cars, then establish the new connection again.
A vehicle that never recognizes a known-good phone after these checks may need receiver-specific service; DHU installation changes on the development computer are unrelated.
A fast decision checklist
- Classify the target: DHU on a computer, AVD in Android Studio, or a real car display.
- For DHU, verify installation: SDK Manager → SDK Tools → Android Auto Desktop Head Unit Emulator, then confirm
SDK_LOCATION/extras/google/auto/. - For Linux, verify the host: GLIBC 2.32 or later,
libc++1,libc++abi1, execute permission, and the adjacent bundledlibusb. - For the phone, verify state: Android 9/API 28 or later, developer mode, current Android Auto, Android 10/API 29 phones signed in to Google Play, unlocked screen, and accepted first-run prompts.
- Choose one DHU transport: Accessory Mode with
--usb, or ADB tunneling with the head unit server and port 5277 forwarding. - On Windows, account for drivers: WinUSB may be needed for Accessory Mode and may disrupt ADB; use
adb kill-serveror change to ADB tunneling if discovery fails. - For an AVD, follow the emulator-specific troubleshooting categories instead of DHU USB instructions.
- For a real car, test a short, high-quality data cable without a hub or extension, verify compatibility and settings, restart the infotainment system, and check receiver firmware.
What a successful setup looks like
A correctly installed DHU launches from the SDK’s extras/google/auto/ directory, remains able to load its bundled USB library, and presents the Android Auto head-unit interface on the computer. The phone is an Android 9/API 28-or-newer device with a current Android Auto installation, is unlocked and authorized, and is connected through either Accessory Mode or a fully configured ADB tunnel—not a mixture of both workflows. If your failure occurs before that point, use the layer-specific checks above rather than reinstalling every component.
