Start by identifying which audio is misrouted—media, navigation, calls, or Assistant speech—then check the car’s selected source and its separate volume controls. Confirm that media is playing from a compatible, signed-in Android Auto app. Only after those checks should you troubleshoot Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, USB, the infotainment system, or receiver firmware. The correct fix depends on the audio category, vehicle, receiver, and connection type.
There is no single Android Auto setting that applies to every car. Factory systems and aftermarket receivers use different labels, and a stable connection can still be listening to the wrong source. Use the sequence below to separate a source-selection problem from a connection, compatibility, or receiver fault.

First, identify exactly which sound is in the wrong place
“Android Auto audio” is not one single stream. A car can handle media, turn-by-turn directions, phone calls, and voice responses through different controls or even different speaker channels. Test each category separately before changing settings.
| What you hear | First place to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Music or podcasts come from the phone | Android Auto app selection and the car’s media source | Media must be started from a compatible app exposed in Android Auto, while the receiver must be listening to the Android Auto source. |
| Navigation directions use the wrong volume or speakers | Navigation/voice volume while a direction is being spoken | Some vehicles keep navigation, media, and voice volumes separate. |
| Calls use the phone instead of the car | Active call audio destination and the vehicle’s hands-free connection | Call routing is distinct from media playback. |
| Assistant replies come from the phone | Voice volume, microphone/assistant state, and Android Auto connection | Assistant speech may use a separate voice channel from music. |
| Nothing works reliably | Compatibility, connection, infotainment restart, and receiver firmware | This points to a connection or system problem rather than a simple source-selection error. |
Perform one short test for each category. Start a song, trigger a navigation instruction, place or answer a call safely while parked, and ask the Assistant a question. Note whether the sound is on the phone, silent, too quiet, or coming from an unexpected car speaker. That observation determines the next branch.

Also note whether the behavior is constant or intermittent. A constant phone-only output with Android Auto visibly running usually calls for a source, app, or volume check. Audio that cuts out, reconnects, or disappears along with the Android Auto interface points more strongly to the connection or receiver.
Make sure Android Auto is actually playing the media
For music and podcasts, Google’s Android Auto guidance says compatible media apps can play through the car’s speakers. The app must be installed and signed in on the phone, and it must be available to Android Auto.
- Connect the phone to Android Auto, either by USB or wirelessly.
- On the car display, open the Android Auto app launcher or the recent-apps area. The exact label and location vary by vehicle and receiver.
- Select the compatible music or podcast app from that screen rather than starting playback only from the phone.
- Start a track and verify that the car’s display shows the Android Auto media session.
- Adjust volume with the vehicle’s control while the track is playing.
If the app is missing, check that you are signed in on the phone and that the app supports Android Auto. Do not assume that every audio app, browser tab, or phone notification can be routed through the car in the same way. A phone playing audio outside the Android Auto interface can remain on the handset even though Android Auto itself is connected.
Use one known-compatible app for testing rather than switching among several apps. If that app works through the car, the Android Auto media path is functioning and the missing or phone-only app needs its own compatibility or sign-in check. If no compatible app produces car audio, continue with the receiver source and volume checks.
Check the car’s selected audio source
A connected phone does not always mean the receiver is listening to Android Auto. The infotainment system may still be set to FM radio, a built-in media source, another Bluetooth profile, or a previous device.
- Use the vehicle’s source, media, or audio button.
- Choose the source associated with Android Auto or the connected phone. The wording differs by vehicle.
- Confirm that the Android Auto display is active and that the track or app name appears on the receiver.
- Play audio and raise the volume with the car’s knob or steering-wheel control.
- If the receiver shows Android Auto but the source remains silent, switch to another source briefly, then return to Android Auto and test again.
There is no universal menu path: vehicle manufacturers place source selection and mixing controls in different menus. Use the owner’s manual for the exact labels. Google’s setup guidance likewise directs drivers to the vehicle manual or manufacturer for vehicle-specific controls.
Check the source at the moment the sound is playing. Some receivers remember separate sources for different phone profiles, and a source that looked correct while idle may not be the active one once media, a call, or a navigation prompt starts. Photographing the receiver’s source screen can help support staff understand what the car selected.

In some vehicles, navigation, media, and voice volumes are controlled separately. Raising the music volume will not necessarily raise a spoken direction or Assistant response.
Media volume
Start a song or podcast, then adjust the car’s volume control while the media is audible. If you adjust volume while nothing is playing, some receivers change a default level instead of the active media level.

Navigation volume
Start a route and wait for an instruction. Turn the vehicle volume up during the spoken instruction. If the receiver has a navigation-volume slider, adjust it there. If directions are silent but music works, verify that navigation guidance is not muted in the navigation app before changing connection settings.
Voice or Assistant volume
Ask the Assistant a question and change the volume while it is speaking. Some systems expose a separate voice level. A low voice setting can sound like incorrect routing because music plays normally while responses are barely audible or seem to come from the phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCalls
For a call, check the call-audio destination shown on the phone and the vehicle’s hands-free status. Call audio does not prove that media routing is working, and media playback does not prove that the hands-free profile is connected. Keep the vehicle stationary while testing calls.
Google’s official Android Auto volume guidance states: “In some vehicles, the volumes for navigation, media, and voice may be controlled separately.” Because the controls are vehicle-specific, the owner’s manual is more reliable than a generic online menu path.
Verify the connection type before troubleshooting it
Android Auto can run over USB or wirelessly. The connection path determines which checks are relevant.
Wireless Android Auto
Google says the initial wireless setup uses Bluetooth pairing and recommends leaving Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and Location Services turned on during setup.
Recommended Free Tools
- Park the vehicle and turn on the infotainment system.
- On the phone, enable Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and Location Services.
- Begin pairing from the vehicle’s phone or Android Auto setup screen.
- Accept the pairing and Android Auto prompts on both the phone and the car display.
- After Android Auto loads, select the media app from the car display and test audio.
If wireless Android Auto connects but audio is consistently routed to the phone, first repeat the source and volume checks above. Re-pairing is more appropriate when Android Auto fails to connect, disconnects, or does not appear at all; it is not a guaranteed cure for a stable connection with a wrong source selected.
For a clean test, keep other phones out of the vehicle’s pairing process and use one phone at a time. If the car connects to a different phone, record which phone, Android version, and connection method worked; that comparison gives the manufacturer useful compatibility information without proving that the original phone is defective.
USB Android Auto
When the wired connection is unstable, Google’s troubleshooting guidance suggests a high-quality USB cable shorter than one metre. Treat that as a reliability step for dropouts, failure to connect, or repeated reconnects—not as proof that buying a cable fixes a stable session whose audio is simply assigned to the wrong source.

- Use a known-good, high-quality cable shorter than one metre if the connection is intermittent.
- Unlock the phone and accept any Android Auto permission prompts.
- Wait for the Android Auto interface to appear on the car display before starting media.
If Android Auto stays displayed while the audio is wrong, do not replace the cable as the first response. The cable recommendation addresses an unstable connection; a source or separate-volume setting can misroute a perfectly stable session.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Restart the infotainment system when the connection or interface is abnormal
If Android Auto will not load, repeatedly disconnects, or the receiver displays an outdated audio state, restart the infotainment system. Google lists an infotainment restart among its general Android Auto troubleshooting steps.
- Stop the vehicle safely and switch the ignition or vehicle power off according to the owner’s instructions.
- Allow the infotainment system to shut down fully; some systems remain in standby for a short time.
- Restart the vehicle and wait for the receiver to finish booting.
- Reconnect the phone and test one media app before opening other audio sources.
The exact restart method is vehicle-specific. Do not pull fuses, disconnect the vehicle battery, or perform a factory reset merely because media is on the wrong speaker; those actions can erase settings and are not established as a general Android Auto remedy.
Check compatibility and receiver firmware if Android Auto itself is failing
Google recommends checking Android Auto and vehicle compatibility when the service does not work normally. Compatibility problems are more likely when Android Auto is absent, will not connect, or worked only with one phone or one connection method.
- Confirm that the phone and vehicle or receiver are supported for the Android Auto connection type you are using.
- Check the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions for the correct USB port and pairing sequence.
- If the receiver was installed after the vehicle was built, check the receiver manufacturer’s support site for firmware updates.
- Apply firmware only according to the receiver manufacturer’s procedure and compatibility notes.
- After an update, restart the receiver and test Android Auto with one app.
Firmware troubleshooting applies especially to aftermarket receivers. It does not establish that every wrong-speaker symptom requires an update, and it does not replace checking the selected source or separate volume channels first.
Factory-installed and aftermarket systems also differ in where support lives. For a factory system, the vehicle manufacturer controls the source labels, speaker mixing, and documented restart procedure. For an aftermarket receiver, the receiver maker controls firmware and model-specific Android Auto behavior, while the vehicle maker may still document steering-wheel and speaker controls. Identify the receiver brand and model before contacting either company.
Update Android Auto carefully
A Google Android Auto Help Community response dated March 15, 2021, linked a particular Android 11-era case of sound playing from the phone rather than the car speakers to an update that had been rolled out, and advised updating Android Auto. That is historical, version-specific guidance—not a current universal fix.
If your phone offers an Android Auto update, installing the current version is reasonable when the problem began after an operating-system or app change, or when Android Auto is failing more broadly. Do not infer that an update will correct every routing problem. A stable Android Auto session with the receiver set to the wrong source still needs the vehicle-side correction described earlier.
- Open the phone’s app-update screen.
- Check whether Android Auto or the relevant system component has an available update.
- Read the update requirements and install it over a reliable connection.
- Restart the phone and the infotainment system if the update requests it.
- Reconnect Android Auto and repeat the category-specific audio test.
After updating, test the same app, source, and audio category that originally failed. Changing several settings at once makes it impossible to tell whether the update, a source change, or a volume adjustment solved the symptom.

Use a symptom-based decision path
Music is on the phone, but Android Auto is visible on the car
- Select the music or podcast app from the Android Auto car display.
- Confirm the app is compatible and signed in on the phone.
- Set the receiver’s source to Android Auto or the connected phone.
- Raise media volume while the track is playing.
Music works, but directions or Assistant speech do not
- Trigger a spoken instruction or Assistant response.
- Adjust volume during that speech, not during music playback.
- Check whether navigation or voice is muted in the relevant app.
- Consult the vehicle manual for separate navigation and voice controls.
Calls use the phone, but media uses the car
- Check the active call’s audio destination.
- Verify that the vehicle’s hands-free connection is paired and selected.
- End the call, restart the infotainment system if necessary, and test again while parked.
Android Auto will not connect or keeps dropping
- For wireless setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and Location Services on.
- For USB, use the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable port and a high-quality cable shorter than one metre.
- Restart the infotainment system.
- Check phone and vehicle compatibility.
- For an aftermarket receiver, check firmware with its manufacturer.
Only one phone has the problem
- Record the affected phone model and Android version.
- Compare with a supported phone only while parked and without changing vehicle settings unnecessarily.
- If the second phone works, give the vehicle or receiver manufacturer both sets of device details.
What not to assume
- Do not assume a connected phone automatically means the receiver selected Android Auto as its source.
- Do not assume media, navigation, calls, and Assistant speech share one volume control.
- Do not assume every phone app can send audio through Android Auto.
- Do not buy a cable or Bluetooth accessory solely because the audio is routed incorrectly while the connection is stable.
- Do not treat the 2021 Android 11-era community response as proof that an update fixes current vehicles and phones.
- Do not reset the vehicle or replace a receiver without model-specific evidence.
- Do not use a call test to conclude that music routing works, or a music test to conclude that hands-free calling works.
When to contact the vehicle or receiver manufacturer
Escalate when the vehicle’s manual does not explain the source or volume behavior, Android Auto is compatible but absent from the receiver, the problem persists after a restart and correct source selection, or an aftermarket receiver needs firmware that is not publicly documented. Provide the manufacturer with the phone model and Android version, vehicle year/make/model, receiver model, wired or wireless connection type, the affected audio category, and the exact result of your tests. Those details let support distinguish a media-source setting from a hands-free, compatibility, or firmware fault.
For persistent problems, describe the symptom precisely: for example, “music from a compatible signed-in app plays on the phone while Android Auto is shown on the car display,” rather than simply saying “Android Auto sound is broken.” A model-specific support team can then map the behavior to the correct vehicle control or known compatibility issue.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Android Auto show on the car while music still comes from my phone?
Android Auto may be connected while the receiver is still set to another source, or playback may have started in an app that is not exposed through Android Auto. Select a compatible, signed-in media app on the car display, choose the Android Auto or connected-phone source, and adjust media volume while the track is playing.
Why do navigation prompts have a different volume from music?
Google says some vehicles control navigation, media, and voice volumes separately. Raise the volume during an actual spoken instruction and consult the vehicle manual for the model-specific navigation or voice control.

Will buying a shorter USB cable fix wrong-speaker audio?
Google’s guidance suggests a high-quality cable shorter than one metre when a wired connection is unstable, disconnects, or will not connect. It does not establish that a new cable fixes a stable Android Auto session whose audio is assigned to the wrong source.
Should I turn on Bluetooth for wireless Android Auto?
Yes. Google describes initial wireless setup as Bluetooth pairing and recommends keeping Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and Location Services on during setup. If Android Auto already connects normally, repeat source and volume checks before re-pairing.
Is an Android Auto update always the answer?
No. A March 15, 2021 Google Android Auto Help Community response described an update for a specific Android 11-era phone-audio case. That historical example is not a universal solution for current vehicles. Update when Android Auto is failing broadly or the issue began after a software change, then retest.
Does a factory car and an aftermarket receiver use the same fix?
Not necessarily. Menu labels and restart procedures vary by vehicle, while aftermarket receivers have their own firmware and support sites. Check the owner’s manual first and identify the receiver model when seeking help.

Is there a universal speaker-balance setting for Android Auto?
No universal menu path is established. Vehicle manufacturers place source, mixing, and separate-volume controls in different locations, so use the owner’s manual or manufacturer instructions rather than applying a setting from another model.

Will buying a shorter USB cable fix wrong-speaker audio?
A high-quality cable shorter than one metre is suggested for unstable wired connections, not as a proven fix for a stable session assigned to the wrong source.
Should I turn on Bluetooth for wireless Android Auto?
Yes. Initial wireless setup uses Bluetooth pairing, with Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and Location Services left on during setup.
Is an Android Auto update always the answer?
No. The March 15, 2021 Android 11-era community response was version-specific and is not a universal current fix.
What information should I give support?
Provide the phone and Android version, vehicle and receiver models, wired or wireless connection, affected audio category, app, source, and test results.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the audio category first. For media, use a compatible signed-in app from the Android Auto car display, select the correct vehicle source, and adjust the active media volume. Test navigation, voice, and calls separately because their controls may differ. Troubleshoot Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, USB, restarts, compatibility, firmware, or updates only when the symptoms indicate a connection or system problem. If the issue remains, give the vehicle or receiver manufacturer detailed model, version, connection, and symptom information.
