Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start by identifying what failed: one app missing from the car-screen launcher, Android Auto controls missing on the phone, or the entire phone-to-car connection. Those symptoms have different fixes. Open the affected app on your phone, check whether it is compatible with Android Auto, and then troubleshoot the USB or wireless link. Android Auto is built into supported Android phones for car-display use, so a missing standalone Play Store listing does not usually mean that Android Auto must be reinstalled.
Identify exactly what disappeared
Before changing settings, reproduce the problem and classify it. A single missing icon is usually an app-availability or phone-setting issue; a blank launcher or no connection at all points to pairing, cable, infotainment, or compatibility.

| What you see | Most likely area | First action |
|---|---|---|
| One previously available app is absent from the car launcher | The phone has disabled or put the app to sleep, or the app is not currently Android Auto-compatible | Open the app on the phone, then reopen the Android Auto launcher |
| Android Auto controls or a separate app icon are missing on the phone | Normal Android Auto integration or a phone software issue | Look for Android Auto in phone Settings and remember that it is built into the phone for car-display use |
| The car never starts Android Auto over USB | Cable, USB port, receiver setting, or vehicle compatibility | Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the car and test a short, known-good data cable |
| The car and phone pair but wireless Android Auto will not launch | Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Location Services, or wireless-compatibility setup | Turn on all three phone radios/services and pair through Bluetooth again |
| Android Auto stopped working after previously working | Cable failure, changed phone settings, software update, or infotainment fault | Replace the USB cable if wired, then check phone, receiver, and Google Play services updates |
Menu names differ by phone maker, Android release, vehicle, and region. Use the labels on your device rather than assuming that every phone has the same path.
Understand Android Auto’s app model
Android Auto is integrated into supported Android phones for use on a compatible car display. You do not normally install a separate Android Auto app from Google Play to make the car interface appear. The phone supplies the car-screen experience, while individual apps must implement Android Auto support before they can appear in its launcher.

That distinction explains two common mistakes. First, searching Google Play for an “Android Auto” app and installing an unrelated listing will not restore a missing car connection. Second, an app that works perfectly on the phone may not be approved or designed for the driving interface. Google’s Android Auto app information lists compatible categories and directs users to the app developer for problems limited to a particular app.
Availability can also vary with the Google account and Play Store personalization. An app may be hidden because the installed version, account, region, or developer configuration does not currently expose its Android Auto component. Treat compatibility as a separate check from connection troubleshooting.
Fix one app missing from the car launcher
1. Open the app on the phone
Unlock the phone and launch the missing app normally. Sign in if it requires an account, allow any pending update or permission prompt, and leave the app open briefly. Then reconnect to Android Auto or open the launcher on the car display. This simple step can restore an app that the phone temporarily disabled.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Check automatic disabling and sleep settings
Some phones, particularly Samsung models, can automatically disable unused apps or place them in a sleep state to save battery. Re-enable the app and remove it from any unused-app or sleeping-app list. On a Samsung phone, search Settings for terms such as Automatically disable unused apps, Sleeping apps, or Deep sleeping apps; the exact wording and location vary by One UI and Android version.

Do not disable battery protection for every app indiscriminately. Change the setting for the affected app, test Android Auto, and keep the phone’s normal power-management protections for apps that do not need to run in the car.
3. Confirm the app still supports Android Auto
Check the app’s current Play Store description and the Android Auto-compatible app categories. An update can remove, change, or temporarily disable a car-screen component. If other Android Auto apps remain visible and only one app is affected, contact that app’s developer rather than repeatedly resetting the whole connection.
4. Check account and Play Store availability
Make sure the phone is using the Google account you expect and that the app is installed from the same account’s Play Store. Availability can be personalized by account and region. If the app is unavailable or shows no Android Auto capability for your account, the car launcher cannot add it through a cable or pairing reset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Reconnect and test from the launcher
After changing the app or battery setting, disconnect and reconnect Android Auto. Wait for the car display to finish loading, open the app launcher, and verify whether the icon returns. If every other app works, stop changing vehicle settings; the remaining fault is likely app-specific.

When the entire wired connection fails
Use this sequence for a USB connection that does not start, disconnects repeatedly, or stopped working after months of reliable use.
- Confirm vehicle support. Check the vehicle or receiver documentation for Android Auto compatibility. In the infotainment menus, make sure Android Auto or smartphone integration is enabled. Some systems have a setting that permits charging but blocks data projection.
- Restart the infotainment system. Turn the car off, open and close the driver’s door if the vehicle requires a full shutdown, and restart the receiver according to its manual. A receiver reboot can clear a stalled projection session without changing phone data.
- Check the receiver’s firmware. If you use an aftermarket receiver, consult its manufacturer’s support site for firmware updates and compatibility notes. Do not install firmware intended for a different model.
- Inspect both ends of the path. Look for lint, bent contacts, looseness, or visible damage in the phone connector, cable plugs, and vehicle USB port. If the phone charges but Android Auto does not start, the cable may provide power without reliable data.
- Replace the cable with a known-good data cable. Google recommends a high-quality cable shorter than 1 metre. Use the connector type that matches the phone and car, and avoid USB hubs, extension leads, and adapters where possible. If Android Auto used to work and now fails, Google specifically identifies cable replacement as a potential fix.
- Test another compatible USB port. Some vehicles have separate charging-only and data-capable ports. Use the port marked for smartphone integration or Android Auto in the vehicle manual.
- Reconnect with the phone unlocked. Accept prompts on both screens, allow the requested permissions, and keep the phone connected until the car launcher appears. A locked phone or dismissed permission dialog can make a good cable look faulty.
Do not judge a cable solely by charging speed. Android Auto needs a stable data connection, and an older or damaged lead can continue charging while failing projection.
When wireless Android Auto will not start
Wireless Android Auto has additional prerequisites because initial setup uses Bluetooth and the ongoing projection link also relies on Wi-Fi. Vehicle support is not universal, even when the phone supports wireless Android Auto.
- Verify wireless compatibility on both sides. Check the phone’s Android Auto requirements and the vehicle or receiver manual. A car that supports wired Android Auto may not support the wireless mode.
- Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services. Keep all three enabled during setup. Turning off Wi-Fi after Bluetooth pairing, or denying Location Services, can prevent the setup prompts or stop the session from completing.
- Pair through the vehicle’s Bluetooth menu. Start pairing from the car and select the phone when it appears. Accept the pairing code on both screens, then follow the Android Auto prompts on the phone and car display.
- Keep the phone nearby and awake during first setup. Leave it unlocked long enough to approve permissions and any safety notices. Once setup completes, follow the vehicle’s normal start procedure.
- Remove only the failed pairing and try again. If the car shows an old or duplicate phone entry, delete that entry from the vehicle and the phone’s Bluetooth list, restart both devices, and pair once more. Avoid erasing unrelated Bluetooth devices unless necessary.
- Check the vehicle maker’s instructions. Wireless setup menus and supported model years differ. If the phone pairs for calls but Android Auto never appears, ask the vehicle manufacturer whether the receiver needs a firmware update or whether that trim supports wireless projection.
Check Google Play services before clearing anything
Google Play services supports device connections used by Android Auto. Open the phone’s Play Store and check for an available Google Play services update, or install pending system updates through the phone’s Settings. Also update Android Auto-compatible apps that are failing individually.

Clearing Google Play services data is not a routine first fix. Google warns that deleting its stored data can remove saved device information and may require you to authenticate again or re-enter payment methods. Try updating, restarting, checking permissions, and testing the cable or wireless setup first. If a support technician specifically instructs you to clear data, record the accounts and pairings you may need to restore, then follow the current instructions for your phone model.
Separate phone settings from vehicle compatibility
Android Auto depends on several components working together: the phone’s Android version and permissions, the app’s Android Auto integration, the cable or wireless radios, and the vehicle’s infotainment software. A failure in one layer can mimic a failure in another.
| Layer | What to verify | Evidence that points here |
|---|---|---|
| App | Installed, updated, compatible, not disabled or sleeping | Only one launcher icon is missing while other apps work |
| Phone | Android Auto integration, permissions, Google account, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Location Services | The phone shows prompts or errors before the car does |
| USB path | Short high-quality data cable, ports, no hub or extension | Charging works but projection is intermittent or absent |
| Wireless path | Wireless support, Bluetooth pairing, Wi-Fi and Location Services | Calls pair but Android Auto does not launch wirelessly |
| Vehicle or receiver | Android Auto enabled, correct USB port, firmware, model compatibility | Multiple phones fail in the same car, or the receiver never offers Android Auto |
Testing another compatible phone can help isolate the layer, but interpret the result carefully. If a second phone works, compare Android versions, account settings, cables, and permissions before declaring the original phone defective. If no phone works, focus on the vehicle port, infotainment settings, and receiver firmware.

Document the failure before escalating
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, write down the exact environment. This prevents support from repeating generic resets and helps identify a compatibility boundary.
- Phone make and model, Android version, and recent system-update date.
- Vehicle make, model year, trim, and infotainment or aftermarket receiver model.
- Whether the connection is USB or wireless, including the USB port and cable used.
- Whether the phone charges, Bluetooth calls pair, and any Android Auto prompt or error appears.
- Whether one app is missing or every Android Auto function fails.
- Which settings, cable swaps, re-pairing attempts, updates, and restarts you already completed.
Ask the vehicle manufacturer about compatibility, infotainment settings, and receiver firmware. Ask the individual app developer when one otherwise compatible app remains missing or crashes while the rest of Android Auto works. Include the information above so each support team can test the layer it controls.
Prevent the problem from returning
- Keep Android, Google Play services, Android Auto-compatible apps, and receiver firmware current when updates are offered for your devices.
- Do not let battery-management tools automatically disable apps you use on the car display.
- Keep a short, high-quality data cable in good condition if you use USB; replace it when the connection becomes intermittent rather than relying on charging behavior as a test.
- Use the vehicle’s designated data port and avoid hubs and extensions.
- For wireless use, leave Bluetooth and Wi-Fi available during setup and follow the vehicle maker’s pairing procedure.
- When an app disappears, check the app and phone first instead of resetting every vehicle pairing.
Google’s support index uses the labels “Find an app that is not on the app launcher” and “My Android Auto app isn’t working.” Searching those exact phrases alongside your phone and vehicle models can help you reach the relevant, current instructions; menu wording and compatibility can change with software updates and model year.
