A stretched image can instead come from a full-screen compatibility override or an app layout that was never built for the screen’s aspect ratio. Start with the affected app’s aspect-ratio setting, test changes reversibly, and treat persistent distortion as an app-compatibility problem rather than a damaged screen.
First, identify what is actually being stretched
The location of the bars tells you which problem you are solving. If the entire app appears as a correctly proportioned rectangle with unused space at the left and right, or at the top and bottom, Android is probably letterboxing the app window. The system is keeping the app’s intended proportions instead of enlarging it until it touches every edge. Android documents this as a common result on large displays whose dimensions differ from the standard phones many apps were designed for. See Android’s device compatibility mode documentation.

If only a video has bars inside the app, those bars may belong to the video itself. A 16:9 recording shown on a wider display can have unused space without anything being wrong with the app or phone. Zooming such a video fills more pixels by cropping part of the frame, so do not treat video-only bars as an app defect unless the player’s own zoom or fit controls produce an unexpected result.

Distortion is different from letterboxing. Circles that become ovals, people who look unusually wide, text that is stretched, or a camera preview with the wrong proportions indicates that the app or a compatibility mode is scaling content beyond the layout it was designed to use. Take a screenshot before changing anything; it gives you a useful before-and-after comparison and helps a developer diagnose the issue.

Try the reversible per-app fix
On supported large-screen devices, Android and the device maker may expose an aspect-ratio control for individual apps. The generic Android location is Settings > Apps > Aspect ratio, but manufacturers can rename, move, or omit the menu. Android’s guidance describes several possible choices, including App default, Full screen, Split screen, fixed ratios such as 4:3 or 16:9, and a display-aspect-ratio option. Your phone may show only some of them. The official overview is App orientation, aspect ratio, and resizability.
- Open the display-compatibility menu. In Settings, open Apps and look for Aspect ratio. If Settings has a search field, search for “aspect ratio” or “full screen.” On some models the control is inside an app’s individual settings page or a display-related submenu.
- Select the affected app. Choose the app that shows bars or distortion. If it is not listed, the device does not expose an override for that app, or the feature is unavailable on that Android release or screen.
- Start with App default. This lets the app and Android use the compatibility behavior selected for that build. It is the safest baseline and the setting to restore after an unsuccessful experiment.
- Apply the change and reopen the app. Close the app from the recent-apps screen, then launch it again. A display configuration change may require the window to redraw; Android’s size-compatibility mode can also present a restart control.
- Test Full screen only if you want more usable area. Reopen the app and inspect normal screens, text, images, camera previews, menus, and controls at every edge. If the app is cropped, stretched, or harder to operate, return to App default.
- Try a fixed ratio only when it matches the content. A 16:9 choice can suit an older landscape app, while 4:3 may better match a legacy tablet layout. A fixed ratio is not automatically more accurate; judge the result visually and functionally.
Do not assume that the option with the most filled pixels is the best one. The goal is a usable, correctly proportioned interface, not simply eliminating every bar.
How the available modes differ
| Mode | What it does | Use it when | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| App default | Uses the app’s declared orientation, aspect-ratio, and resizability behavior together with Android’s compatibility handling. | The app already looks proportioned, or you need a reliable baseline. | Whether bars are even, text is readable, and every control is reachable. |
| Full screen | Asks the system to occupy more of the display than the app’s default compatibility window. | You prefer a larger view and accept that an older layout may not adapt. | Oval shapes, cropped edges, hidden buttons, overlapping text, and distorted camera previews. |
| Fixed ratio (for example 4:3 or 16:9) | Constrains the app window to the selected shape rather than the panel’s full shape. | A particular ratio matches the app’s original design or its media. | Black bars may remain; check that the chosen ratio does not cut off navigation or content. |
| Split screen or display aspect ratio | Uses a device-specific window arrangement or ratio policy. | The option is offered by your manufacturer and you need that exact multitasking or display behavior. | Whether the app resizes correctly when the window changes and whether controls remain accessible. |
Why wide screens produce bars or distorted layouts
Many apps were authored around a fixed portrait orientation, a fixed aspect ratio, or a non-resizable window. A tablet, desktop-style window, or foldable inner display can be substantially wider or taller than the phone shape assumed by that app. Android then has to choose between preserving the app’s proportions inside a smaller window and scaling the app to fill a shape it does not understand. The first choice produces letterboxing; the second can expose a poor layout or stretched rendering.

“Letterboxing happens often on large screen devices because the dimensions and aspect ratio of the device display are usually different from those of standard phones, for which most apps are designed.” — Android Developers, Device compatibility mode
Android’s adaptive-app guidance describes the design failure behind visible distortion: “Avoid stretched UI components: Layouts designed for standard, portrait phone screens can fail to accommodate other aspect ratios.” The warning appears in Android’s orientation, aspect-ratio, and resizability guidance. A device-side full-screen switch cannot rewrite an app’s layout rules, so it may reveal the limitation rather than repair it.
On a foldable, opening, closing, or rotating the device changes the available configuration. Android can move the app into a different compatibility mode after that transition. A result that looks correct on the cover screen may therefore show bars on the inner display, and vice versa.

Android version and device limits
Android 14 and later
Android’s compatibility guidance says that Android 14 and higher can provide a settings menu for changing an app’s aspect ratio on large-screen devices that implement the feature. “Can” is important: the manufacturer decides whether the menu appears and which choices it contains. Two devices on the same Android release may therefore expose different controls. A missing menu is not evidence that you overlooked a universal Android switch.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Android 16 and the 600dp threshold
Android 16 (API level 36) generally ignores an app’s orientation, aspect-ratio, and resizability restrictions on displays with a smallest width of at least 600dp when the app targets API level 36. This policy is aimed at tablets, the inner screens of large foldables, and desktop-style windowing. Android documents exceptions for smaller displays and games, and a user can opt in to the app’s default behavior through aspect-ratio settings when that control is available. Developers can temporarily opt out; Android says that opt-out capability will be removed for apps targeting API level 37 or higher on those large displays. Read the details in the Android Open Source Project large-screen compatibility setup guide.
The 600dp rule is a technical display threshold, not a promise that every app will fill every screen without defects. It also does not make a normal narrow phone behave like a tablet. The app’s target API, the physical display configuration, game exemptions, and the manufacturer’s settings all matter.

Troubleshoot by symptom
There is no Aspect ratio menu
- Confirm that you are using a large-screen device or a foldable display where the manufacturer supports per-app compatibility controls.
- Use Settings search for “aspect ratio,” “full screen,” “compatibility,” or “display size.” Labels differ by device maker and Android release.
- Install available system updates and restart the device. An update may add or revise the control, but it cannot be assumed to do so.
- If the menu still does not exist, there is no universal Android command that safely forces every app to fill the panel. Continue with app updates and developer reporting instead of installing unverified “screen fixer” utilities.
Full screen makes the app look worse
Return to App default, force-close the app, and open it again. Check whether the problem is cropping rather than stretching: a button or text line cut off at the edge needs the default window or an app update, not more zoom. Camera previews deserve special attention because a preview can be scaled or clipped even when the rest of the interface appears acceptable.
The setting changes nothing
Some apps render their own surface, lock a particular orientation, or do not respond to the device’s override. Repeat the test after fully closing and reopening the app, then compare a screenshot. If both modes produce the same bars, the app may be intentionally maintaining its ratio or the override may not apply to that app type.
Controls disappear at an edge
Use App default or a fixed ratio that keeps the complete window visible. Rotate the device once to see whether the app has a separate landscape layout. Do not rely on an edge gesture to reach a button that is partly outside the window; that is an app-layout defect.
Best Value
The problem appears only after folding or rotating
Close and reopen the app after the display transition. If the app repeatedly returns to the wrong shape, record which configuration triggers it: cover screen, inner screen, portrait, or landscape. That detail helps distinguish a transition bug from a consistently non-adaptive layout.
Only videos have bars
Look for the player’s own controls such as Fit, Fill, Zoom, or Crop. Fit preserves the complete frame and may leave bars; Fill removes bars by cutting off part of the picture. Choose based on whether preserving the entire image or using the full panel matters more for that video.
When an app update is the real fix
An aspect-ratio override changes how the operating system hosts an app; it does not add responsive constraints, alternate layouts, or larger touch targets to the app package. If the app remains stretched, cropped, or letterboxed after testing App default and the available full-screen or fixed-ratio choices, the developer may need to ship an adaptive update.
Before contacting the developer, gather:
- Device model and whether the affected panel is a tablet, foldable inner display, external display, or phone screen.
- Android version and, if shown, the app’s target or compatibility information.
- App version from the app’s store page or Settings > Apps > the app.
- Screen orientation and configuration when the issue occurs.
- A screenshot or screen recording showing the bars, stretching, cropping, or inaccessible control.
- Which aspect-ratio options you tested and whether reopening the app changed the result.
Send those details through the developer’s support channel or the app-store feedback mechanism. Describe the visible behavior precisely rather than only saying “it does not fill the screen.” A report that identifies a distorted camera preview or a clipped edge button is more actionable than a request to remove all bars.
What not to do
- Do not buy a replacement display, cable, screen protector, or generic repair tool solely because an app has bars. Letterboxing is normally software compatibility behavior, not evidence of panel damage.
- Do not force every app into an arbitrary ratio and assume a filled screen means a correct screen. Scaling can distort images and hide controls.
- Do not crop video automatically. Cropping removes part of the original frame and may hide subtitles, faces, or important action.
- Do not treat an Android 16 large-screen policy as a guarantee for every phone, game, or app. The documented 600dp threshold, target API, exceptions, and opt-out rules determine the result.
A practical decision checklist
- Are the bars around the whole app, or only inside a video? For a video, check the player’s fit and crop controls first.
- Does the app look proportioned inside the bars? If yes, letterboxing is preserving the layout.
- Does your device offer Settings > Apps > Aspect ratio or an equivalent search result? If yes, record the current setting.
- Have you tested App default before Full screen? Keep App default if Full screen introduces distortion, cropping, or unreachable controls.
- Did you close and reopen the app after changing the mode?
- Is the issue tied to a fold, rotation, or a particular display? Record that configuration.
- If no setting works, have you updated the app and sent the developer the model, Android version, app version, and evidence?
The most reliable outcome is the mode that keeps proportions correct and the entire interface usable. On a device that exposes a compatibility override, Full screen is worth testing, but App default remains the recovery setting when the app’s layout cannot adapt. When no override exists or the app still fails, only an app update can address the underlying layout.
