If an Android app crashes, freezes, or feels slow on a Chromebook, restart the Chromebook, check its internet connection, then clear that app’s data and cache. If the same app still fails, contact its developer; Google says the app developer is the best place to go when an app is not working properly. For problems affecting the whole Chromebook, check ChromeOS updates and available storage before considering a device-level reset or recovery.
Fix one Android app first
Use these steps when one app is the main problem. Menu names can vary by ChromeOS version, so follow the labels shown on your device rather than assuming every Chromebook has identical menus.

- Restart the Chromebook. Turn it off and on again, then reopen the app.
- Check the internet connection. Confirm the Chromebook is online, especially if the app needs a connection or the Play Store is not loading.
- Clear the affected app’s data and cache. Open the app settings on your Chromebook, select the problem app, and use the available storage controls to clear its data and cache. Clearing data can remove information saved by that app on the device, so check whether the app syncs or backs up important information before doing so. Google’s Android-app troubleshooting guide recommends this step for apps that will not open, crash, or have another serious problem.
- Check whether the app works with your Chromebook. Some Android apps do not work on some Chromebook models, and an app may behave differently from how it does on an Android phone or tablet. For example, a touch-focused interface may be awkward on a Chromebook without a touchscreen; that difference alone does not establish that it is causing a crash. Google explains app availability and behavior in its Chromebook Android-app guide.
- Contact the app developer if the problem persists. If other apps work but this one still crashes or freezes after the steps above, use the developer’s support contact or app listing to report the issue. Google Play Help identifies the developer as the appropriate support contact for an app that is not working properly.
Check whether the Chromebook supports Android apps
Google Play is available on some Chromebook models, not all of them. To check on the Chromebook, open Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences. If that option is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not support Android apps. See Google’s instructions for installing and using Android apps.

On a school- or work-managed Chromebook, an administrator may prevent users from adding the Play Store or downloading Android apps. If the Play Store option is unavailable on a managed device, ask the organization’s administrator whether Android apps are allowed; changing ordinary app settings will not override an administrator’s policy.

If the Chromebook itself is slow or freezing
When several apps, browser windows, or ChromeOS functions are affected, treat the issue as broader than one Android app. Google’s system troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting, closing apps and browser windows, and removing recently added apps or extensions as appropriate. Work through the update and storage checks below before considering a more disruptive device-level step.
Install available ChromeOS updates
- Open Settings → About ChromeOS.
- Select Check for updates.
- If an update is available, let it install and restart the Chromebook to finish.
Google’s ChromeOS update instructions describe this update flow. If the update controls are managed by a school or workplace, contact its administrator.

Check available storage
Low storage may cause problems using Android apps. Chromebook storage management reports Android storage as well as other storage categories. Google’s storage guide suggests removing items you no longer need, such as downloaded files, unused apps, extra local user accounts, and browsing data or download history. Review files before deleting them, and back up anything you want to keep.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen reset or recovery is—and is not—appropriate
Reset and recovery are device-level escalations for persistent Chromebook-wide problems, not routine fixes for one malfunctioning Android app. If only a single app is broken, complete the app-specific steps and contact its developer before considering device recovery.

Google warns that Chromebook recovery permanently erases everything on the device’s hard drive and recommends backing up files first if possible. Do not start recovery unless you understand that local-data loss and have tried less disruptive troubleshooting. Google’s hardware and system troubleshooting guide covers broader system issues.

Extended updates are not an app-performance fix. Google says eligible Chromebook models released before 2021 may opt in, but that extended-update path removes Android apps and the Play Store, and opting in cannot be reversed. Eligibility is model-specific; check Google’s extended updates information before making any decision about an older Chromebook.
