If Windows Update shows 0x8007045d (sometimes mistyped as “ox8007045d”), first run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then repair Windows’ component store and protected system files with DISM and SFC. If the error remains, check the system disk, isolate startup-software conflicts with a clean restart, and review third-party security software. The Microsoft pages used for these procedures do not define 0x8007045d itself, so treat the code as a symptom and use the stage of failure, logs and storage checks to narrow the cause.

Confirm the code and where the failure occurs

Windows error codes use a zero followed by x: 0x8007045d. The first character is a zero, not the letter “o.” Before changing anything, open Windows Update and record the exact message, take a screenshot, and note whether the failure happens while Windows is downloading an update, installing it, restarting, or attempting to restore a previous update state.

That context matters because Microsoft’s published Windows Update repair guidance is general guidance; the cited Microsoft Support pages do not provide an authoritative definition of error 0x8007045d. It is therefore not accurate to declare that this code always means a failed hard drive, a damaged update cache, or malware. If the same code appears while reading installation media, a USB device, or another storage path, a storage or data-transfer problem is a reasonable troubleshooting hypothesis, not an official meaning of the code.

  • Write down the update’s name or knowledge-base number if Windows displays one.
  • Record whether the computer reaches a restart and then rolls back.
  • Disconnect nonessential USB storage and accessories before retrying, but leave the keyboard, mouse and network connection attached.
  • Do not delete update folders or edit the registry as a first response; the Microsoft procedures below test safer layers first.

Prepare safely before troubleshooting

Back up personal files

Microsoft advises backing up personal files before troubleshooting update problems. Copy documents, photos, browser exports and other irreplaceable data to a separate drive or a trusted cloud location. A backup protects your data if a disk check finds a serious problem or an update rollback leaves Windows unable to start.

Use an administrator account

DISM, System File Checker and disk repair require an elevated Command Prompt. Sign in with an administrator account, or have an administrator approve the elevation prompt. Save open work before commands that may request a restart.

Keep the computer powered and connected

For a laptop, connect the charger. Avoid interrupting DISM, SFC or CHKDSK while they are running. If the update is large, use a stable internet connection and allow Windows enough time to complete a restart.

Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter first

Microsoft describes the troubleshooter as a way to help resolve Windows Update problems. Run it before repairing system files because it checks the update workflow itself and can apply supported corrections automatically.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Follow the recommendations shown by the troubleshooter and allow it to finish.
  5. Restart the computer, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and complete the prompts.
  4. Restart Windows and check for updates again.

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. The troubleshooter can still help with an existing update workflow, but it cannot restore updates that Microsoft no longer publishes for an unsupported installation. If you remain on Windows 10 in 2026, check Microsoft’s supported-upgrade or paid-support options for your edition before treating every failed update as a local repair problem.

Repair the Windows component store and protected files

When the troubleshooter does not clear 0x8007045d, repair the component store with Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), then verify protected system files with System File Checker (SFC). Microsoft’s sequence is important: let DISM finish successfully before starting SFC.

Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. At the administrator prompt, enter exactly:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  3. Press Enter and wait. DISM may pause at a percentage for several minutes; do not close the window or restart while it is working.
  4. Continue only after Windows reports that the operation completed successfully. If DISM reports an error, record the complete text and code rather than guessing at a fix.

Run SFC after DISM succeeds

  1. In the same elevated Command Prompt, type:
    sfc /scannow
  2. Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Microsoft specifically notes the space between sfc and /scannow.
  3. Read the final message. It may say that no integrity violations were found, that corrupt files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. Keep the message for later support.
  4. Restart Windows, return to Windows Update, and retry the update.

DISM repairs the Windows component-store image that system servicing relies on; SFC checks protected operating-system files. Neither command guarantees that every Windows Update failure will be repaired, and neither establishes the meaning of 0x8007045d by itself.

Check the system disk with CHKDSK

If the update still fails, Microsoft’s update guide includes a file-system check. This is particularly useful when Windows reports read/write errors, repeatedly rolls back during installation, or the failure also occurs when opening files. Those symptoms can justify checking storage health, but they do not prove that 0x8007045d has one fixed disk-related cause.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Enter:
    chkdsk /f C:
  3. Press Enter. Because the Windows volume is normally in use, Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y if you are ready to restart.
  4. Close applications and restart when convenient. Let CHKDSK complete; interrupting a disk check can leave the file system in an uncertain state.
  5. After Windows starts, retry Windows Update. If CHKDSK reports unreadable sectors, repeated corrections, or other serious errors, back up immediately and obtain a professional assessment of the drive before repeatedly attempting updates.

Use a clean restart to isolate software conflicts

A clean restart starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It can reveal whether a non-Microsoft service, startup utility, overlay, storage filter or security product is interfering with update installation. A clean restart does not remove applications; it temporarily prevents selected services and startup programs from loading.

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first prevents you from disabling core Windows services.
  3. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. In Task Manager’s Startup apps list, disable enabled nonessential items. Close Task Manager.
  4. Select OK in System Configuration and restart.
  5. Try Windows Update in the clean-start environment. If it succeeds, return to msconfig, restore normal startup, and re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting between groups until the conflicting item is identified.
  6. To return to normal startup without testing further, open msconfig, choose Normal startup on the General tab, select OK, and restart.

Do not leave essential security, networking or hardware services disabled after testing. The purpose of a clean restart is isolation, not permanent operation with a reduced service set.

Review third-party antivirus and security software

Microsoft warns that third-party antivirus or other security software can cause update errors. Security products may inspect downloads, lock files while Windows replaces them, or install filtering drivers that interact with servicing. First check the product vendor’s compatibility guidance for your Windows version and the specific update.

  • Install any update offered by the security-software vendor before attempting the Windows update again.
  • If the vendor documents a supported temporary pause or diagnostic mode, follow that procedure exactly and reconnect protection immediately after the test.
  • Do not uninstall or reinstall security software solely on a guess. Microsoft recommends checking compatibility with the vendor before making that change.
  • Keep another protective layer active where possible; disabling antivirus protection is not a substitute for diagnosing the update failure.

If Windows Update works only when a particular security product is disabled, record the product version, Windows edition and update number, then contact that vendor for a supported configuration rather than repeatedly disabling protection.

Troubleshoot by what you observe

The error appears while downloading

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and try again on a stable connection. If the failure persists, perform DISM and SFC in the documented order. Note whether the code appears only on one network or account; that information helps Microsoft or the device manufacturer distinguish an update-service problem from a local system problem.

The error appears during installation or after a restart

Complete DISM, SFC and the restart before retrying. If Windows rolls back repeatedly, use a clean restart to remove third-party startup conflicts, and review security software compatibility. Preserve the exact rollback message and update number.

The error appears when using removable media or another storage path

Treat a storage or transfer fault as a hypothesis. Try a known-good port or cable, remove unnecessary removable drives, and check the relevant drive’s health and Windows event logs. Run CHKDSK only on the intended volume and back up first. Do not describe the result as the official definition of 0x8007045d; Microsoft’s general update pages do not make that claim.

The error returns after every repair

Confirm that your Windows edition is still supported, especially if it is Windows 10 after October 14, 2025. Gather the screenshot, update number, exact stage, DISM and SFC final messages, CHKDSK result, and any clean-start observation. These details are more useful to support than repeatedly rerunning the same commands.

When manual repair does not restore Windows Update

If the troubleshooter, component-store repair, file verification, disk check and clean-start test do not resolve the problem, use Microsoft’s broader Windows Update recovery and support options for your edition. Keep the collected messages and logs available. A support technician may need the Windows version and build, update identifier, installation stage, restart or rollback behavior, and storage or security-software findings.

Do not promise a guaranteed fix: the code is not defined by the general Microsoft pages cited for these procedures, and different devices can fail at different layers. If the computer also shows file corruption, unexplained read/write errors, repeated blue screens or inability to boot, prioritize data backup and hardware assessment before further update attempts.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
