Office error 0x80070057 means ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER (“the parameter is incorrect”), but it is not an Office-specific diagnosis. The correct fix depends on where it appears: when an Office app opens, during an Office repair or installation, or in Windows Update, backup/restore, or another servicing task. Restart first, then repair Office, reinstall it if necessary, or switch to the Windows servicing procedure when the error is outside Office.
Identify where 0x80070057 appears
The same hexadecimal code can be generated by different Windows components. Before changing anything, note the exact screen, application and action that produced it. This prevents trying to repair Office when the underlying failure is Windows Update or system servicing.

What the code means and why the context matters
Microsoft defines 0x80070057 as ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER: an operation received a parameter it could not accept. The code does not identify one defective file or one universal Office fault. In Windows Update guidance, Microsoft associates this class of failure with corrupted files, insufficient permissions and incorrect system configuration. Those causes can exist in Windows even when an Office program is the visible application.

If one Office program fails while the others work, an Office repair is a sensible first path. If every Office program fails, or the installer itself cannot complete, a deeper suite repair or a clean reinstall is more appropriate. If the message is shown by Windows Update or a restore operation, repairing Office alone may leave the actual cause untouched.
Before you repair
- Save documents and close every Office application, including files left open in the background.
- Restart Windows once and sign back in. A restart clears a pending installation or a locked Office process and is Microsoft’s first step for a Microsoft 365 app that will not start.
- Record whether the installed product is Microsoft 365, a one-time Office edition, Click-to-Run or MSI. The available buttons and repair workflow depend on that installation type.
- Make sure you can sign in with the account that owns or activates the Office installation before uninstalling it.
- For Online Repair or a reinstall, use a reliable internet connection. Keep the computer connected to power if it is a laptop.
Do not start by editing the registry or deleting Office folders manually. Those actions can remove activation information or make a later repair harder, while Microsoft’s supported repair paths are reversible and easier to diagnose.
Step 1: Restart and retry the exact operation
- Close Word, Excel, Outlook and any other Office windows.
- Open Start, select Power, and choose Restart.
- After Windows loads, sign in and open the same Office app or repeat the same repair action that produced 0x80070057.
If the operation now works, a temporary process lock or pending Windows state was the trigger. If the code returns, continue with the branch that matches the failure location rather than repeating restarts indefinitely.
Step 2: Run Office Quick Repair
Quick Repair is the least disruptive Office repair. It checks and replaces local Office components without the full reinstall-style process used by Online Repair. Start here when one app fails or when the error appears while launching Office.

Windows 11 and current Windows 10 Settings
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Installed apps. On some Windows 10 builds, the page is called Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft 365 or the installed Microsoft Office edition.
- Select the three-dot menu (or the entry itself), choose Modify, and approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
- Select Quick Repair, choose Repair, and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Windows, then test the Office app that failed.
Control Panel route
- Open Control Panel and select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft Office or the relevant Microsoft 365 entry.
- Choose Change or Modify.
- Select Quick Repair, confirm Repair, and restart when it completes.
If there is no Modify, Change or repair option, the entry may be an installation type that uses a different maintenance workflow, or the installation may already be damaged. Proceed to Online Repair or the uninstall/reinstall path instead of removing random files.
Step 3: Use Online Repair when Quick Repair fails
Online Repair is deeper than Quick Repair. It requires an internet connection and repairs the entire Office suite, even if only Word or Excel is failing. It can replace more installation components, so expect a longer operation and the possibility that Office applications will be unavailable until it finishes.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features) and select the Office entry.
- Choose Modify. In Control Panel, select the Office entry and choose Change or Modify.
- Select Online Repair, then select Repair.
- Leave the computer connected while the installer downloads and replaces Office components.
- Restart Windows after the repair and test the original application and action.
Online Repair is the right escalation when a single-app failure survives Quick Repair, when several Office apps fail, or when local Office files are suspected. It does not repair Windows Update’s component store; use the Windows servicing track for an error shown outside Office.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 4: Uninstall and reinstall Office
Use a reinstall when Online Repair fails, the Office installer repeatedly reports 0x80070057, or the installed edition cannot expose a working repair option. This is more disruptive than either repair because Office is removed and must be installed again.

- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
Remove the existing installation
- Save all work and close Office applications.
- Run Microsoft’s Office uninstall troubleshooter and follow its prompts to select the Office installation to remove.
- Allow the troubleshooter to finish and restart Windows when it asks you to do so.
The troubleshooter is preferable to manually deleting program directories because it removes the installation through Microsoft’s supported process. If more than one Office edition is listed, select the edition that produced the error and make a note of any separate language or 32-bit/64-bit choice you need to restore.
Install the correct edition again
- Sign in to the Microsoft account or organizational portal associated with your Office license.
- Download the same Microsoft 365 or one-time Office edition that you are entitled to use.
- Run the installer and allow it to complete before opening an Office app.
- Sign in if prompted, let Office finish any updates, restart Windows, and retry the operation that previously generated 0x80070057.
Microsoft notes that its offline installer can bypass some proxy, firewall, antivirus or connection problems that interfere with a normal installation. If the ordinary installer fails at the same point, use the offline option offered for your licensed edition rather than repeatedly launching the same failed setup.
When the error appears in Windows Update or system servicing
If the message is displayed by Windows Update, backup/restore, or another Windows servicing screen, do not assume Office is the cause. Follow the Windows path below. These commands repair Windows components and protected files; they are separate from Office Quick Repair and Online Repair.

- Find Windows Update and select Run (or Run the troubleshooter).
- Apply any recommended correction, restart Windows, and retry Windows Update or the restore operation.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not correct the problem, continue with DISM and System File Checker. Do not close the command window while either scan is running.

Repair the Windows component store with DISM
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- At the elevated prompt, enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. - Wait for DISM to reach completion. The percentage can pause for a while; interrupting it can leave the repair incomplete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that later file checks rely on. A successful completion message means DISM finished its operation, not that every Office problem has been diagnosed.
Run System File Checker after DISM
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent and Windows reports the result.
- Restart Windows and repeat the original Windows Update, restore or servicing operation.
Microsoft’s sequence is DISM first and sfc /scannow second. Running SFC before DISM can leave it without a healthy component source for replacing damaged files.
Choose the next step from the symptom
| Symptom after the previous step | Next action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Only Word, Excel or another single app fails; other Office apps open | Quick Repair, then Online Repair if needed | The failure is localized enough to begin with the least disruptive Office repair |
| Every Office app fails after restart | Online Repair; if it fails, uninstall and reinstall | A whole-suite installation problem is more likely than one damaged app component |
| Modify/Change is unavailable or repair itself returns 0x80070057 | Use Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter, restart, and reinstall the correct edition | The installed maintenance path may be damaged |
| The code appears only in Windows Update or restore | Windows Update troubleshooter, DISM, then SFC | Office repair does not rebuild Windows servicing components |
| The installer fails because of network or security filtering | Try Microsoft’s offline installer for the licensed edition | The offline package can bypass some proxy, firewall, antivirus or connection problems |
Common pitfalls that make the error persist
- Repairing the wrong product entry: A PC can contain an older Office edition alongside Microsoft 365. Select the entry that actually launches the failing app.
- Stopping Online Repair early: It downloads and replaces components. Closing the lid, disconnecting the network or forcing a shutdown can leave Office partially repaired.
- Expecting a single-app repair from Online Repair: Online Repair acts on the entire suite, even when only one program is affected.
- Using Office repair for a Windows Update failure: The error code is shared by multiple Windows operations. Follow the screen that produced it.
- Skipping the restart after a repair or system-file scan: Pending file replacements may not become active until Windows restarts.
- Reinstalling the wrong edition: A different product, account, architecture or license can create a new activation or compatibility problem even if installation succeeds.
- Running commands without elevation: DISM and SFC need an administrator Command Prompt. A non-elevated window can fail before repairing anything.
How to tell whether the repair worked
Use the same test that originally failed rather than relying only on the absence of an error during setup. Open the affected Office app, create or open a test document, and repeat the action that produced 0x80070057. For a Windows Update or restore failure, retry that exact update or restore operation after the restart following SFC.

If one application still fails while the rest work, repeat the documented escalation only once: Quick Repair, then Online Repair. If all Office applications fail after Online Repair, move to uninstall and reinstall. If the failure remains confined to Windows Update or servicing, keep troubleshooting Windows rather than removing Office again.
What is—and is not—known about a guaranteed fix
Microsoft publishes these repair procedures, but it does not publish a success rate for Office error 0x80070057. Because the code represents an invalid parameter in different operations, no single step can be promised to fix every occurrence. The most reliable approach is to match the repair scope to the failing operation: Office repair for an Office launch or installation problem, and DISM/SFC for a Windows servicing problem.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files; it can also reduce CPU, RAM and disk load through settings tweaks, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, warn about risky sites, offer a lightweight potentially unwanted-app scanner, and provide a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category (at least two days) followed by a subscription; it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and results vary.
