Microsoft Store error 0x8007422 is reported when the Store will not open or when app downloads fail. Microsoft has not published a definitive explanation for this exact code, so treat it as a symptom rather than proof of one specific fault. Start with the documented cache reset, then install Windows updates and correct time and region settings. If that does not work, repair or reset the Store app, check its AppX registration in PowerShell, and investigate Windows Update services, policy, firewall, and proxy restrictions.
What error 0x8007422 means
Reports using 0x8007422 describe two main behaviors: Microsoft Store does not launch, or it opens but cannot download or update apps. There is little authoritative documentation defining the code itself, so no single cause can be assigned to every occurrence.

A related Microsoft Q&A report describes Windows asking for Microsoft Update services and returning Error 1058 when a required service could not start. That is useful evidence when your Store failure is accompanied by Error 1058, but it does not prove that every 0x8007422 case is a disabled service. Cache corruption, pending updates, incorrect clock or region data, damaged Store registration, organization policy, and blocked network endpoints can produce similar symptoms.
The safest approach is to move from reversible, user-level actions to progressively more targeted repairs. Do not remove the Store package as a first step: Microsoft’s modern-app guidance says uninstalling Microsoft Store is unsupported.

Choose the least invasive fix first
| Fix | What it changes | Typical privilege | Scope and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
wsreset.exe |
Clears the Microsoft Store cache | Standard user | Current user; highly reversible |
| Repair in Advanced options | Repairs the app without deliberately clearing its data | Usually standard user | Store app; low risk |
| Reset in Advanced options | Reinitializes the app and can clear its local data | Usually standard user | Store app; reversible, but sign-in or preferences may need to be restored |
| AppX registration check and re-registration | Checks whether the Store package is registered for your account and registers an existing package when needed | Non-elevated PowerShell for the documented commands | Current user; targeted |
| Service and network-policy checks | Finds disabled services, organization restrictions, firewall blocks, or proxy failures | Administrator or IT administrator may be required | Can affect the whole device or network; change only settings you control |
Before troubleshooting
- Write down the exact code, whether the Store window opens, and whether the failure affects downloads, updates, Xbox, or Minecraft sign-in.
- Note whether the problem occurs for one Windows account or for every account you can test. AppX registration is user-scoped, while policy and service problems can affect the whole device.
- Save work and close Store windows. The cache reset and app reset should not remove installed Windows applications, but an app reset can clear the Store’s local data.
- If this is a work or school computer, identify the support team before changing services, proxy settings, or policy-related configuration.
- Use an administrator account only when Windows asks for it. The registration command documented below is intended for a non-elevated PowerShell window.
1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
Microsoft Support’s first-line procedure is to reset the Store cache. It does not require you to delete folders manually.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - A blank Command Prompt window appears. Leave it open; do not close it yourself.
- Wait for the window to close. Microsoft says the Store should then open automatically.
- Try the same action that previously failed: launch the Store, download an app, or install an update.
The blank window is normal while the cache is being reset. If it closes and the Store opens, the problem was likely cache-related or temporary. If it remains open for an unusually long time, closes without launching Store, or the code returns, continue with the next steps rather than repeatedly running the command.
2. Install Windows updates and correct time and region
Microsoft Support recommends current Windows updates and accurate time and location settings for Store problems. Store authentication and download services rely on those values, so a wrong clock or region can look like a network or account failure.

- On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install everything offered, including updates that require a restart.
- Restart the PC when prompted, then check Windows Update again. Some updates are delivered in stages and are not fully applied until the restart finishes.
- Open Microsoft Store and repeat the failed download or update.
Check automatic date and time
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11. Windows 10 uses Settings > Time & Language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and, if available, choose Sync now.
- Confirm the displayed time zone matches your location. A large clock difference can prevent secure connections even when the internet otherwise works.
Check region
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Region on Windows 10.
- Set Country or region to the country where the PC is being used, unless an administrator intentionally configured another region.
- Restart Windows after changing the region and test Store again.
Settings labels vary slightly by Windows release. Do not change the region merely to obtain a different catalog; correct the setting to match the device’s actual location.
3. Repair, then reset Microsoft Store
Windows provides app-level repair controls that are safer than removing the Store package.
Repair first
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft Store, select its three-dot menu (or the app entry), and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair. Wait for Windows to finish; the button should indicate completion without deleting the app’s local data.
- Launch Microsoft Store and retry the operation.
Reset if repair did not help
- Return to the same Advanced options page.
- Select Reset and confirm the prompt.
- Open Store again and sign in if Windows asks. Test a small download before attempting a large application or game.
A reset reinitializes the Store and can remove its local settings or cached sign-in state. It does not uninstall Microsoft Store itself. If the buttons are missing or disabled, the device may be managed by policy, or the Windows release may use different labels.
4. Check and restore Store AppX registration
Microsoft Learn documents a check for the Store package and a registration command for a package that exists but is not registered for the current user. Use the commands exactly as shown.

Check whether the package exists
- Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell from the Start menu. Open it normally; do not choose Run as administrator for this check.
- Enter
Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.WindowsStore*and press Enter. - Review the result. A result containing package information means Windows can see a Store package for your account. No result means the package is not available to that account, so the registration command cannot repair it.
Register an existing package for your account
If the package is present but the Store still behaves as though it is not registered, run this command in the same non-elevated PowerShell window:
Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe
Wait for PowerShell to return to the prompt, then restart Windows and test Microsoft Store. This command targets registration for the current user; it is not a device-wide reinstall.
Interpret common outcomes
- The command completes without an error: restart and test Store. Registration repair may resolve a launch failure even when the cache reset did not.
- PowerShell reports that the package cannot be found: do not keep repeating the command. The package is not available in the scope being checked, so move to Windows servicing or administrator support rather than trying to remove and recreate Store manually.
- Access or policy errors appear: the account, device policy, or security configuration may block AppX changes. Contact the administrator on a managed PC.
- The command succeeds but downloads still fail: registration was not the only issue; continue to service, policy, firewall, and proxy checks.
5. Check Windows Update services and Error 1058
If your failure also shows Error 1058, investigate service startup. The related report connects that message with Windows being unable to start a required Microsoft Update service. It is a useful diagnostic clue, not a universal definition of 0x8007422.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Locate Windows Update and any other service named in the error message. Check the Status and Startup type columns.
- If a required service is stopped, open its properties and review whether the startup type is Disabled. Error 1058 commonly appears when Windows is prevented from starting a disabled service.
- On a personal PC that you administer, set the service to a non-disabled startup option appropriate for Windows, apply the change, and use Start if it is available. Restart the PC and test Store.
- On a work or school PC, do not override a disabled setting without approval. An organization may intentionally enforce it through policy.
Do not change unrelated services or use registry cleaners to force a startup state. If Windows refuses to start the service, records another error, or changes revert after reboot, capture the message for your administrator.
6. Check policy, firewall, and proxy restrictions
Microsoft Learn notes that Store download and update failures can result from policy restrictions or blocked firewall and proxy endpoints. This is especially important when Store opens normally but downloads remain at pending, fail immediately, or work on another network.
Managed-device policy
- Ask your organization’s administrator whether Microsoft Store is disabled for the device, user, or network.
- Do not assume a missing Store button or disabled download is a corrupted installation; a policy can deliberately restrict the app.
- If policy is the cause, only the administrator can change it. Re-registering the package locally will not override a device-wide restriction.
Firewall and security gateway
- Confirm that Windows Firewall or the organization’s security gateway is not blocking Microsoft Store and Windows Update traffic.
- Use the organization’s documented allowlist for Store and update endpoints. The required endpoint set can change, so do not invent addresses or copy an unverified list.
- Do not turn off the firewall as a permanent workaround. If a temporary diagnostic test is authorized, restore protection immediately and involve the administrator.
Proxy configuration
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy on Windows 11. Windows 10 uses Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy.
- Check whether a manual proxy is configured. If your organization requires it, leave it enabled and verify that its address, port, and authentication are current.
- If a proxy is enabled accidentally on a personal connection, correct the setting, reconnect to the network, and test Store.
A successful web browser connection does not prove that Store endpoints are reachable through the same path. A proxy can allow ordinary browsing while blocking the services used for app licensing, downloads, or updates.

7. Use the symptom to choose the next branch
Store never opens
Run wsreset.exe, install updates, verify time and region, and use Repair followed by Reset. If the package check shows a Store package, perform the documented registration command. Then inspect service startup and policy. A persistent launch failure after all of those steps points to broader Windows servicing or account restrictions rather than a simple cache issue.
Store opens, but downloads or updates fail
Prioritize Windows Update status, accurate clock and region, and firewall or proxy access. If downloads fail only on a managed network, ask the administrator to review policy and endpoint access. Re-registration can help a damaged app identity, but it will not bypass a blocked network path.
Only one Windows account is affected
Because the documented AppX check and registration repair are user-scoped, run them from the affected account. A device-wide service or policy change is less likely to be the first explanation when another account can use Store normally. Do not delete the affected profile merely to test a theory; preserve its data and involve support if registration repair fails.
Xbox or Minecraft sign-in is also affected
Record that broader symptom for the administrator or Microsoft support. It suggests that the failure may involve account, network, or policy services beyond the Store window itself. Complete the local cache, update, and time checks, but avoid treating a Store re-registration as a complete fix for every sign-in problem.
8. Restoring Store after a Windows update
When the problem began immediately after Windows Update, finish the update cycle first: install all pending updates, restart, and check again. Then run the cache reset and app Repair. If the Store package is present but no longer registered for the affected user, use the documented PowerShell registration command. Finally, check whether the update changed service startup, organization policy, firewall rules, or proxy configuration.
Windows’ modern-app guidance also includes Reset-AppxPackage where appropriate, but availability and syntax can differ by Windows release. Prefer the Settings Reset control unless you are following Microsoft’s instructions for your exact version. Do not remove Microsoft Store to force a reinstall; Microsoft states that removal is unsupported and it can leave you with a harder restoration problem.
When to stop and request administrator or Microsoft support
- The Store package is absent from
Get-AppxPackageand the device does not offer a supported repair path. - Services are disabled by organization policy, or service settings revert after every restart.
- Firewall or proxy access is controlled by a company, school, or internet gateway you cannot administer.
- PowerShell reports repeated deployment, permission, or component-store errors.
- Other built-in Windows apps fail at the same time, indicating a broader Windows servicing problem.
- The exact code changes, or the Store begins failing across multiple user accounts after a system change.
Provide support with the exact 0x8007422 message, whether Store opens, the result of wsreset.exe, the Windows version, the output pattern from Get-AppxPackage, and any Error 1058 or service message. That information is more useful than repeatedly applying unrelated registry edits.

Its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription; results vary, it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and no tool repairs every crash.
The practical restore order
Use the fixes in this order: reset the cache, finish Windows updates, correct automatic time and region, Repair then Reset Microsoft Store, check and re-register the existing AppX package for the affected user, and investigate Error 1058, service startup, policy, firewall, and proxy restrictions. This sequence starts with Microsoft’s least invasive procedures and preserves the Store package while narrowing the cause of the failure.
