If an Xbox game will not install after you bought it, first verify the Microsoft account that made the purchase, then look for the title in My games & apps > Ready to install. If it is missing, determine whether the purchase and the device are compatible. If the game is listed but the download or installation fails, use Xbox Support’s current installation troubleshooting and provide the exact error code instead of guessing at a fix. Windows PCs follow a separate Microsoft Store path.
Start by identifying where the installation fails
The right next step depends on the device and the failure stage. An Xbox console and a Windows PC do not use the same installation workflow, even when both use a Microsoft account and the Microsoft Store. Before changing settings, record four facts:

Xbox console: verify ownership and the library
1. Sign in with the purchasing account
On the console, check the profile that is active. It must be the Microsoft account used to buy the digital game, unless the console is using an approved sharing arrangement that gives another profile access. If a family member or a second account made the purchase, signing in with a different profile can make the title appear unowned even though the console is online.

Microsoft’s digital-download guidance says that most products bought directly from Microsoft, including Xbox games, can be downloaded, installed, or reinstalled. That assumes the purchase is associated with the account being used. Do not buy the game again until the original transaction has been checked.
2. Look in Ready to install
- Open My games & apps on the Xbox console.
- Open the library area and select Ready to install.
- Find the purchased game and select it to begin installation.
Microsoft specifically directs Xbox One users to this location when a purchased game does not appear in the normal game list. A title that is present there is an ownership and library match; the remaining issue is the installation itself. A title that is absent requires account, purchase, or device-availability checks before you troubleshoot a download.
3. Use Order history as a purchase check
If the title is not in Ready to install, review the Microsoft account’s order history to confirm that the transaction completed and to identify which account made it. Order history is a verification step, not a replacement for the Xbox library path. Some Microsoft help pages describe Windows buttons and Store screens; do not copy those Windows-only paths onto an Xbox console.

Check the exact product name, edition, and date. A preorder, bundle, add-on, trial, or consumable is not necessarily the same listing as the full game. If the order is not present on the account you are checking, stop troubleshooting the console until you locate the account that owns it or confirm how the purchase was made.
Confirm that the game is available for this device
Seeing a game in the Microsoft Store on one device does not prove that it can be installed on every device. Microsoft warns that an app or game may be offered on one PC but not another PC or an Xbox. Device and platform eligibility therefore needs its own check.

Questions to answer
- Was the purchase made for Xbox, Windows PC, or a title that supports both platforms?
- Are you trying to install on the same platform named on the product listing?
- Is the console generation supported by that edition?
- Are you looking at a game, an add-on, or a companion application?
A Windows purchase that is not licensed for Xbox will not become an Xbox installation merely because both devices use the same Microsoft account. Conversely, an Xbox listing may not provide a Windows installation. Cross-device rights depend on the particular product listing; do not assume that every digital purchase is cross-platform.
Use the listing and account together
Check the product listing while signed into the purchasing account and compare the listed platform with the device you are using. If the listing offers the game on a PC but not on Xbox, that is an availability limitation rather than a failed console download. If the listing and your order disagree, preserve the order details and ask Microsoft or Xbox Support to reconcile the license.

If an error code is displayed, copy every character, including leading zeroes and letters. A photograph of the screen can prevent transcription mistakes.
Also note whether the game is visible in Ready to install and whether the product listing identifies the console as supported. These details separate a missing entitlement from a failed installation request.

Use Xbox Support’s console installation troubleshooting
For a console game that is correctly purchased, appears to be eligible, and still will not install, Microsoft directs users to Xbox Support’s troubleshooting for game or app installation problems. Use that current support flow rather than applying Windows Store instructions to the console.

Why this article does not prescribe a universal console reset
Microsoft’s accessible guidance supports account, library, and device-availability checks and directs unresolved console problems to Xbox Support. It does not establish one safe sequence of cache clearing, network changes, storage replacement, or factory reset that applies to all Xbox installation failures. A reset can have consequences for local data and settings, so it should not be presented as the default answer without a device-specific diagnosis.
Windows PC: use the Microsoft Store branch

Restart after recent Windows updates
Microsoft notes that a PC that has recently installed Windows updates may need a restart before Store apps install. If the installation began failing immediately after an update, complete the pending restart and then try the Store installation again. This is a Windows-specific instruction; it is not evidence that restarting solves an Xbox console download queue.
Follow Microsoft Store troubleshooting
- Sign in to Microsoft Store with the purchasing account.
- Confirm that the product is listed for the Windows device you are using.
- Restart the PC if Windows updates were recently installed and a restart is pending.
- Run the current Microsoft Store troubleshooting sequence for the installation symptom shown.
- If the Store still refuses the install, preserve the exact message and use Microsoft’s support route for Windows apps and games.

The purchase cannot be found
Start with account identity and order history. Sign out of assumptions: the account currently active on the console or PC may not be the account that paid. Check for a different edition, bundle, preorder, or add-on with a similar name. Until the completed order is tied to the account you are using, reinstall attempts are premature.
The purchase is confirmed but the library is empty
On Xbox, check My games & apps > Ready to install. Then compare the product’s platform and edition with the console. If the order is valid and the game is supported but remains absent, provide those facts to Xbox Support so the entitlement and library issue can be investigated.
The install option is unavailable
An unavailable install control can indicate that the current device is not eligible for that product. Verify whether the listing supports Xbox, Windows, or both, and whether the specific console or PC meets the product’s stated platform requirements. A Store listing on another device is not proof of eligibility here.
The download never begins
Record whether the game is listed in the library and capture any message displayed when you select install. Then use the official support path for the device. The evidence available for this issue does not support guessing that the cause is network congestion, storage capacity, licensing, or a service outage.
The installation stops partway through
Note the percentage or stage at which it stops, the full error text, and whether the title remains in the library afterward. Use Xbox Support’s installation troubleshooting for a console or Microsoft Store support for Windows. Avoid deleting the purchase or buying another copy while the original entitlement is being investigated.
What not to buy or change without a diagnosis
