How to Fix an Xbox Controller That Won’t Connect, Stay Paired, or Respond

If an Xbox controller powers on but will not connect or respond, first work out whether the problem is power, the cable, wireless pairing, the device it is connecting to, or the controller itself. Test it by USB, then troubleshoot the wireless route you use. On a Windows PC, pair it again in Bluetooth settings; on an Xbox console, check for a controller firmware update.

Start by separating power, cable, and connection problems

Check that the controller has power. If your model uses replaceable AA batteries and low power is possible, try fresh batteries. Other configurations use a rechargeable battery pack, so replacing AAs is not a universal fix. Microsoft lists low battery among the possible causes of Bluetooth pairing or connection trouble (Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance).

Next, connect the controller to the console or PC with a USB cable that fits its port. Xbox controllers may have a USB-C or micro-USB port; use the connector that matches your model. Make sure the cable is seated at both ends. If the controller works over USB but not wirelessly, focus on pairing, range, power, or the host device’s wireless settings. If it does not work over USB, try another suitable cable and USB port, and test with another compatible host if one is available. These checks help isolate the cause, but do not by themselves prove the controller is faulty. Microsoft advises trying another cable when troubleshooting controller updates (Microsoft’s controller update troubleshooting video).

Reconnect an Xbox controller to a Windows PC

Windows PCs can connect an Xbox controller through Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, or USB. For Bluetooth, use the controller’s Pair button to put it into pairing mode, then select it from Windows Bluetooth device settings. The exact menu wording can differ between Windows versions. Microsoft’s connection guide covers the available PC connection methods (Connect an Xbox Wireless Controller to a Windows device).

  3. Select the controller: Open Windows Bluetooth device settings and choose the controller from the available devices.
  4. If pairing fails: Move the controller closer to the PC and check its power. Confirm it is still in pairing mode before trying again.

Microsoft lists distance, low battery, pairing mode, and possible driver, service, configuration, or update issues as potential causes of Bluetooth trouble. They are possibilities, not a diagnosis of every connection failure. If Bluetooth remains unreliable, try USB or, if appropriate for your setup, an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Xbox Support has an adapter troubleshooting page, but the available indexed information does not provide detailed steps or establish current adapter availability or compatibility; check those before buying one.

Check for controller firmware updates on an Xbox console

On an Xbox console, open the guide with the Xbox button, then go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories. Select the controller and check its firmware or update option. If an update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish a current firmware version, so use the update option shown on your console rather than relying on a version number from another source.

If an update will not complete, use a suitable USB cable and check that it is firmly connected to both the console and the controller. Make sure the cable connector matches the controller’s USB-C or micro-USB port, and give the update time to finish. Microsoft’s troubleshooting video also recommends disconnecting accessories and retrying. If needed, power cycle the console by holding its front Xbox button for 10 seconds, until it shuts off; restart it and check the update again. The video also suggests trying the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows PC.

Choose a connection method for the job

Connection method Where it applies Useful for
USB cable Xbox console or Windows PC Checking whether the controller works over a wired connection; Microsoft also recommends trying another cable when an update fails.
Bluetooth Windows PC Wireless play without an Xbox Wireless Adapter; pair the controller through Windows Bluetooth settings.
Xbox Wireless Windows PC with a compatible connection method An alternative to Bluetooth; a dedicated Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows may be relevant if Bluetooth is the obstacle. Check current compatibility and availability before buying.

For USB troubleshooting or firmware updates, use a cable with the connector that fits the controller. Microsoft’s guidance identifies both micro-USB and USB-C controller ports, but the available information does not map every model to its port or specify cable data capabilities for each update scenario.

When to consider repair or replacement

If the controller still fails over both wired and wireless connections, repeat the wired check with a known suitable cable, another USB port, and another compatible host where possible. Failure across those checks makes a controller hardware problem more plausible, but the available official guidance does not provide a definitive at-home test that proves the controller has failed.

Before buying a replacement, check support and warranty options. Xbox Support’s troubleshooting result says it can help replace a broken controller if its troubleshooting does not resolve the issue (Xbox controller warranty and replacement support).
