How to Fix an Unstable Frame Rate on a YouTube RTMP Stream From a Pre-Recorded File

If YouTube reports an unstable frame rate while you stream a pre-recorded file, first find where the motion becomes uneven: in the file as played by your streaming app, in the app’s rendering or encoding, or at YouTube’s ingest. Check the source and output settings, inspect local encoder diagnostics, then compare the app preview with YouTube Live Control Room. The warning alone does not identify one cause, so changing bitrate first may miss the problem.

Find where the frame rate becomes unstable

Use the first place you can see or measure the stutter to narrow the fault. A smooth file can still stutter during playback or encoding; a smooth local preview with a YouTube health warning points you toward ingest settings, connection capacity, or the specific warning message.

What you observe What to check next
The file stutters when played in the same streaming application, before you start streaming. Inspect the file’s frame rate and whether it is constant or variable, then check playback and local rendering.
The file plays smoothly, but the streaming application’s preview stutters. Check the app’s rendering-lag, skipped-frame, or encoder-overload counters, if available, and system resource use.
The local preview is smooth, but YouTube reports unstable frame rate or stream-health problems. Check the selected ingest settings, sustainable upload capacity, and the exact YouTube warning.
The warning is unclear or persists after settings checks. Record the warning text, encoder version, source properties, output settings, and local diagnostic counters before seeking software support.

YouTube’s official settings guidance describes supported ingest configurations, but it cannot identify the cadence of your file or what your encoder is doing. Those require checking your own media and application.

Record the source and output settings

Before changing anything, write down the file’s actual frame rate, whether it is constant or variable, and its resolution. In the streaming application, note the configured output frame rate, video codec, bitrate mode, bitrate, and keyframe interval. This gives you a baseline and helps distinguish a source/playback issue from an ingest configuration issue.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  • Check the media properties in a tool that reports the file itself; do not assume its frame rate from the project settings used to create it.
  • Record the encoder’s output settings separately. The file’s cadence and the stream’s configured cadence are not necessarily the same.
  • Do not assume variable-frame-rate media is the cause. Test playback in the exact application you use to stream.

Check playback cadence and local encoding

Test the file in the streaming application

Play the recording through the same application and settings you use for the live stream. Use the local preview to see whether motion is already uneven before YouTube ingest is involved. Where practical, use the source’s native cadence and choose a deliberate, steady output cadence. There is no universal conversion rule for every source/output combination; use the file properties and observed playback rather than guessing.

Inspect encoder and system diagnostics

While the file plays, inspect the streaming application’s own indicators for rendering lag, skipped frames, or encoder overload, if it provides them. Also watch system resource use. If local encoding is falling behind, reduce workload or output demands and test again before raising the bitrate: more bitrate does not fix a playback or encoding bottleneck.

Verify YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest settings

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the bitrate recommendation matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate.

  • 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
  • Set a steady output frame rate that suits the program and source; YouTube’s 60 fps ceiling is a supported maximum, not a guarantee that your file will play or encode smoothly.
  • Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where your encoder offers those controls. Do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second keyframe maximum.
  • Choose the bitrate from the matching YouTube recommendation for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. There is no single bitrate that is correct for every output format.

Separate connection problems from cadence problems

Run a speed test and compare sustainable upload capacity with the bitrate you selected, as YouTube recommends. Choose a quality that your connection can sustain, then observe whether YouTube’s stream-health message changes. The official guidance does not set a universal upload-headroom percentage, so do not rely on a fixed percentage as a guarantee.

If the local preview remains steady but YouTube reports a problem, use the warning text to decide whether the next check is bitrate, ingest configuration, or connection. For an RTMPS connection or encryption issue, consult YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Raising bitrate as the first fix: first establish whether the stutter is already present in local playback or encoding. A higher bitrate does not remedy a local cadence or encoding bottleneck.
  • Treating 60 fps support as a smoothness guarantee: YouTube accepts ingest up to 60 fps, but source playback and encoder performance still matter.
  • Using one bitrate recommendation for every stream: match the recommendation to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  • Changing several settings at once: record the baseline and change one relevant setting at a time so you can tell which change affects the symptom.
  • Ignoring the exact warning: if the symptom appears only at YouTube, the health message and ingest details are more useful than assuming the source file is faulty.

When to escalate

If the checks do not resolve the issue, provide the encoder or software support team with the exact YouTube warning, encoder name and version, source file properties, configured output settings, and local diagnostic counters. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance directs users with third-party software problems to the encoder/software support channel and notes that source quality routed to the encoder can affect stream quality.
